Notion Ink's ICS build for Adam goes beta, adds 3G, GPS

[![][1] ][2]

Last month Adam owners got a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich after Notion Ink [released an Alpha build][3], but if the limited functionality didn't do it for you, how about an improved Beta version? The developers hope that HDMI video, functional GPS, better WiFi and a working compass will keep you happy while they iron out the remaining niggles, like non-functioning camera and microphone. If this sounds a bit more like it, you should be able to get your hands on it over the weekend. Hit the source link below for the deets.

Ford sends out OpenXC beta, vehicle-aware apps should be just around the corner

[![Fords sends out OpenXC beta][1] ][2]

It's six months since Ford partnered with Bug Labs to build [OpenXC][3] and now the system is ready for third-party developers to get involved. Rather than following Renault and others down the [Android route][4], OpenXC is a dedicated platform designed to bring together third-party apps and hardware. It comes with an [Arduino][5]-based interface module that hooks up to the car's own systems, allowing the software to work with sensors, audio interfaces, safety devices and whatever other add-ons an owner might want to rig up. One app, developed by India's HCL Technologies, is already complete: it sends location updates to selected contacts to warn them if a driver is running late for a meeting. (Finally, Arduino gets to do something [_useful_][6].)

BlackBerry Playbook OS 2.0 release confirmed for February 21st

[![][1] ][2]

There's been plenty of [back and forth][3] between the web and RIM lately regarding the debut date of the [next OS release][4] for the PlayBook, and now we've got some hard evidence showing that the software is set to be let loose on February 21st . As you can see in the picture above, PlayBook users will be able to download version 2.0 in the early hours of an unknown time zone next Tuesday. The much anticipated update will finally give the tablet a native email client, improved BlackBerry Bridge functionality and plenty of other goodies. Not only that, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will be rolling out that same day, giving IT professionals the ability to manage all BlackBerry devices from a single interface -- with Android and iOS controls coming in March. The picture to prove it is after the break, and now that we got that settled, we can go back to speculating about [BlackBerry 10][5], right?

Ford and Bug Labs Shipping OpenXC Beta Kits

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

MojoKid writes "OpenXC is an open source connectivity platform developed in tandem by Ford and open source hardware maker Bug Labs. Announced this fall, the platform is designed to allow developers the ability to use Android- and Arduino-based modules to interact with a vehicle's in-car tech, such as vehicle sensors and GPS units. The OpenXC website succinctly describes the platform as 'an API to your car.' Ford announced that OpenXC beta test kits are now shipping to developers worldwide, including U.S. institutions such as MIT and Standford as well as India's HCL Technologies."

CM9 for TouchPad gains access to nightly builds

[![CM9 Alpha 6 for TouchPad gets access to nightly builds][1] ][2]

Happy tidings for TouchPad owners looking for the latest [Android 4.0 action][3]: the Alpha 6 build of CM9 can now tune into nightly broadcasts of fixes and updates, courtesy of Teamwin and Eyeballer. This is an unofficial development branch and users have so far seen mixed results, but the main CyanogenMod crew seems content enough to recommend it -- at least until a new Alpha or Beta build comes along with major improvements like video playback or camera support. It's definitely healthier than holding your breath.

More HTC Endeavor whispers: SLCD display, thin chassis, 32GB and no microSD

[![][1] ][2]

Months of rumors about the HTC Endeavor (aka the One X, [Edge][3], [Ville][4]) have layered up to provide a pretty complete (if not totally reliable) picture of the forthcoming [Tegra 3][5]-powered Android handset. There's room for a few more brush-strokes, however, and one of _MoDaCo_'s tipsters is happy to paint them. We're told the new handset will have a Super LCD display, despite earlier rumors of HTC flirting with AMOLED ([again][6]). This could be no bad thing, judging from the stunning 1280 x 720 panel on the [Rezound][7], but the Endeavor is expected to have a larger 4.7-inch screen and hence a slightly lower pixel density. The thinness of the Endeavor's chassis will reportedly be a major selling point, as will be the 32GB of onboard memory that will come as standard. However, this storage won't be expandable -- the tipster says there's no microSD on the back, just a microSIM slot and an 1800mAh battery that may or may not be removable. Again, the provenance of these reports is unknown, but MoDaCo's reports have so far tallied closely with what we saw in a leaked [Endeavor ROM][8]. Assuming it's all accurate, will it be enough to give HTC the differentiating leg-up it so badly needs? We're not sure, but we do know that more [Beats Audio][9] or a [music streaming service][10] won't cut it.

Acer Iconia Tab family to be given Ice Cream Sandwich treatment, rolling out to A200 now

[![][1] ][2]

Acer's revealed that it'll be bringing Android's latest and greatest version to its existing tablet family. The update is rolling out ([as promised][3]) on the Iconia Tab A200 now, but version 4.0 will also make an appearance on both its seven inch ([Iconia A100][4]) and 10 inch ([Iconia A500][5]) relatives in April. The update adds all those ICS features, including refreshed widget design and improved multitasking, but leaves the manufacturer's own Android addition -- the [Acer launcher ring][6] -- in tact.

Auraslate opens Android tablets up to developers, welcomes mischief

[![][1] ][2]

[HTC aside][3], not every manufacturer is willing, ready and committed to opening up its device portfolio to the idle hands of [hackers][4]. Which is why Auraslate, a recently launched start-up, is stepping in to fill that void, instituting a sea change in how [devs][5] translate their unsanctioned software concepts into actual end user products. To do this, the humble outfit's offering up 7- and 10-inch [Android tablets][6] that range in price from $139 to $270 and come loaded up with an ARM Cortex A9 CPU, 4GB storage and a Gorilla Glass-coated capacitive touchscreen. Prospective haxxors can choose between two configurations available on the site: an Advance Development Kit which includes a source code disk and a cheaper Novice option. For the money, you'll get that aforementioned hardware, peripherals (usb plug, power adapter), as well as access to Aura's forums and ROM refreshes, although ICS is limited to its top shelf Lifepad 1026. So if you're tired of damning the Man with every OEM-issued, security-patching update and just want to be left to your coding best, it might be wise to bask in this company's glow.

HBO Go rolls out to most Samsung Smart HDTVs -- but not through all providers

[![][1] ][2]

It's been nearly a year since Samsung [first announced HBO Go access would be coming][3] to its Smart TVs, and today the company announced on all forms of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Google+ -- there may be a YouTube video out there somewhere) it's finally available. Most should be familiar with HBO's TV Everywhere offering that opens its archives to users on various internet devices and has already been well received on [iOS, Android][4] and [Roku][5] platforms. The official [HBO Go][6] Twitter account mentions news on the [Xbox 360 client][7] is "coming soon" but for now subscribers can just grab the app and start watching -- with a few caveats.

For reasons not mentioned, the HBO Go app doesn't play nicely with every Smart TV, with access available on all 2010 and 2011 models with the exception of several from last year (listed after the break). Also key to remember is that not every TV provider has given its blessing to allows customers access to HBO Go in the living room, so it seems Comcast, DirecTV and Time Warner customers are still out of luck. If you've got the right combo of service provider and hardware go forth and download from the Samsung Apps marketplace right now, we'll be busy trying to figure out where the old episodes of _Arli$$_ are.

Google files patent app for unlocking devices, says we don't need no stinking slide-to-unlock

[![][1] ][2]

Apple's legal assault on Android has ratcheted up another notch with [Cupertino's newest complaint][3] against Samsung, in which it alleges a bevy of devices infringe upon its slide-to-unlock patent. Help may be on the way, however, as a recent Google patent application shows Mountain View aims to acquire some device-unlocking IP of its own. Titled "Input to Locked Computing Device," the application claims a method for a device unlocking process using one or more user inputs while simultaneously executing a command -- like calling a specific contact or opening an application. Those user inputs can take the form of passcodes, touch and drag, or audio commands. While the application's drawings depict such a system on a phone, it claims an unlocking system for desktops and laptops as well, so it could easily find its way onto a [Chromebook][4] or two. Of course, it's just an application, so there's no telling when, or if, it'll actually become an addition to Android's courtroom arsenal, but feel free to check out the app itself by surfing on over to the source link below.

Barclays releases Pingit mobile payments app, we go hands on

[![Barclays releases Pingit mobile payments app, but you can't use it to buy coffee][1] ][2]

[Barclays Bank][3] has unleashed Pingit, an [iOS][4], [Android][5] and [BlackBerry][6] app that lets you send up to £300 ($470) each day to family, friends or technically-aware muggers. UK mobile number and bank account holders can get started in minutes as long as you've got one of the Barclays-branded [PINSentry tools][7]. You'll be asked to come up with a five digit code that will lock the app to anyone but yourself (or, you know, that mugger) and then you can start spreading your cash around, _baller-style_. We set up our own account in the app and if you're curious about our impressions, you can find out what we thought after the break.

HP's Whitman Slags Android to Pump WebOS

On Wednesday, at a meeting of the company's channel partners in Las Vegas, HP CEO Meg Whitman talked up Open WebOS, the company's newly open sourced mobile operating system. But she also took a moment to stir up a batch of fear, uncertainty, and doubt about Google?s Android. The mobile operating system ?may end up being a closed system with their purchase of Motorola," she said. Whitman also described Android as "remarkably fragmented."

Double Fine Adventure Will Be Available DRM Free For IOS, Android

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

New submitter Garth Smith writes "Tim Schafer has a video update for his crowdsourced project, Double Fine Adventure. Because of the nearly $2 million in funding, the budget is now large enough for language translations, voice acting, music, and more platforms. The XBox and PS3 are absent. I wonder what would the chances of a DRM-free release have been if funding had come from a traditional publisher?"

HP CEO Says Google-Motorola Deal Could Close-Source Android

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

swandives writes "WebOS could be an important player in the long run as an open-source mobile OS, because Android could become closed source with Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility, Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman said during a speech at the HP Global Partner conference in Las Vegas. It may take up to four years for the complete impact of webOS to be felt, Whitman said. HP has said it would release WebOS -- originally developed by Palm for phones and tablets -- to the open-source community. The company bought Palm in 2010 but late last year announced it will not make devices that use the software."

Double Fine Adventure Will Be Available DRM Free For IOS, Android

New submitter Garth Smith writes "Tim Schafer has a video update for his crowdsourced project, Double Fine Adventure. Mozilla offers Gaia UI first look, will reveal Boot to Gecko partners at MWC

[![][1] ][2]

Mozilla surprised us [last summer][3] when it announced plans for its [Boot to Gecko][4] mobile OS. Now, it looks like the project has some industry support, with CTO Brenden Eich tweeting that the company will make a partner announcement at MWC this month. There are no details right now as to who might be involved, but given that developer support is already there (the operating system is based on existing web standards, after all), the hopes are that this could indicate vital operator, or even hardware manufacturer backing. Another encouraging development is the first sighting of the platform's Gaia UI, further suggesting the project might well meet its planned Q2 release target. It doesn't stray too far from the Android / iOS model that we're already familiar with, but give the source link a swipe if you want to see more.

ASUS delays Ice Cream Sandwich for Transformer, aims for 'Feb / March 2012' release

![][1]

Looks like that Google approval's taking a little longer [than expected][2]. ASUS just announced that the Android 4.0 update for its first [Transformer][3] tablet now likely to land between now and next month. We've just inched over the [mid-February deadline][4] last offered up by the company and this new, _vaguer_ release date arrives from ASUS's Singapore arm. The Ice Cream Sandwich-flavored refresh will be sent over-the-air; that is, when it finally arrives on the keyboard-courting slab.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 hits FCC, refuses to reveal all its secrets

[![Acer Iconia Tab A510][1] ][2]

Rumor had it that Acer's latest slate, the [Iconia Tab A510][3] would be hitting the market in April. Well, the [Android 4.0][4]-sporting slab just inched closer to its debut by sauntering through the FCC. This particular model comes loaded with Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS, but there's no 3G or 4G in sight. The ten-inch tablet didn't reveal all its secrets to us in the filing, and the images of its prerequisite dissection have not been posted yet. Still, it's nice to know that this slimmer and [pleasantly plasticy][5] device should be hitting the market soon and serving up a much needed slice of Ice Cream Sandwich. Hit up the source link if you're really into graphs and radiation reports.
