Instagram opens signup page for Android port, release date still unknown

[![Image][1] ][2]

It's no secret that one of the most popular apps to ever hit the App Store will [soon be coming][3] to Android, and if you'd prefer to be one of the very first on your block to be notified... well, there's a website for that. Instagram has just opened up a [signup page][4] for Android loyalists, enabling folks to input their email address and await word on the download going live. Sadly, there's no hint on the aforesaid page that gets us any closer to a specific release date, but hey -- it's one less unspecified thing you have to remember, right? Pop that source link if your interest has been piqued.

Huawei Fusion arrives at AT& T, lets you Go prepaid with Gingerbread for $125

[![Image][1] ][2]

Hey, not everyone needs a bunch-of-core [superphone][3] tied down to a two-year contract, so it's always nice to have some solid prepaid options, right? If you shook your head _yes_ to that, you'll be pleased to know that AT&T's just added the Android [Gingerbread][4]-loaded [Huawei][5] Fusion to its GoPhone lineup. The device features a 3.5-inch (320 x 480) display up front, while on back there's a 3.2-megapixel shooter. Other goodies include Bluetooth 2.1, FM radio functionality and support for up to 32GB of storage via MicroSD. If your still nodding your noggin, the Fusion and its (essentially) utilitarian specs can be yours for the keeping, sans contractual commitment, for just $125. You'll find more info at the links below.

US Army debuts app marketplace prototype: iOS first, Android coming soon

[![Image][1] ][2]

The promise of an [Army app store][3] has been bandied about for quite a while now, but it looks like it's slowly becoming a reality. The US Army has today officially announced a prototype of the Army Software Marketplace, a web-based app store that currently includes twelve different training apps that have been approved for Army-wide use. That includes just iOS apps initially, but the Army promises that it will soon include apps for Android devices as well. It's also of course looking to expand considerably beyond those dozen odd apps, noting that the prototype is just "a first step in establishing and exercising new submission and approval processes that will eventually enable Army members, organizations and third-party developers to release applications for Army-wide distribution." And you thought the approval process for some of the current app stores was stringent.

[Thanks, Souheil]

US Mobile Carriers Won't Brick Stolen Phones

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

WheezyJoe writes "NBC News has some disturbing security video of people getting assaulted for their smartphones. Such offenses are on the rise. Police chiefs like D.C.'s Cathy Lanier are asking U.S. mobile carriers to brick phones that are reported stolen, in order to dry up what must be a big underground market for your favorite Android device or iPhone -- but right now the carriers won't do it. Such an approach has had success in Australia and the U.K."

Toshiba AT200 review

[![Toshiba AT200][1] ][2]

This waif of a tablet certainly took its sweet time getting here. We first laid eyes on this lightweight beauty last August and while it still hasn't landed in the US just yet (under the guise of the [Excite 10 LE][3]) we've brought in the international version -- already in stores in the UK -- to test out the hardware, which appears to be identical. On first appearances, it's an attractive sliver of a slab, due to the magnesium alloy body, of which there isn't much. Measuring in at just 7.7mm thick, we're talking [RAZR-scale][4] thinness and a 1.18 pound weigh-in that embarrasses 7-inch devices. Despite this, we still have a 1.2GHz dual-core OMAP processor, running Honeycomb 3.2 on a 10.1 inch touchscreen. But surely, sacrifices _must_ have been made, right? Well, it looks like it's a financial cost that has to be paid. The 16GB version is currently on sale for £399, matching the new iPad in the UK, and likely to arrive in the US at around $530, pricing itself quite a bit above existing, similarly-specced, Android favorites like the [Galaxy Tab 10.1][5]. Are you willing to pay a fair chunk of change extra to skim a few millimeters off your tablet profile? Is it worth it? The full story is right after the break.

SugarSync 3.0 hits the iPad with revamped interface

[![Image][1] ][2]

Cloud storage provider [SugarSync][3] has already rolled out an [updated version][4] of its Android app this month, but it's now already back again with a major new release for iPad users. That comes in the form of the SugarSync 3.0 universal app, but the updates here are all on the iPad side of things, including a completely revamped interface, added gesture support, and generally more effective use of the iPad's added screen real estate. As before, the app itself remains free, but you'll have to pay up if you need more storage than the basic 5GB service provides ($5 a month will buy you 30GB, with plans up to 500GB available).

Angry Birds Space won't land on Windows Phone, Redmond gets no stars

[![][1] ][2]

While no doubt swathes of Android and iOS users have experienced massive productivity slumps since [Angry Birds Space][3] came out this week, Windows Phone owners will be left staring at their spreadsheets. Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer, at Rovio has told _Bloomberg_ that there are no plans to release the latest iteration of the popular time sink on Microsoft's mobile platform. Despite the original game still being the most popular app in the Marketplace, Vesterbacka claims that "...it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application." So, until a [Series 40][4] version is confirmed, you bird slingin' Nokia fans will just have to wait.

Griffin's Helo TC Assault helicopter now on sale, gives you yet another way to annoy co-workers

[![Image][1] ][2]

It was way back at CES when [Griffin's Helo TC Assualt][3] chopper first landed on our radar, and now it's set for retail takeoff. Remember the [original TC][4] we played with last summer? This Airwolf-inspired RC helicopter comes with the same IR flight deck, allowing for motion or touchscreen controls with Android and iOS devices. Aside from its aggressive design, the Assault lives up to its moniker thanks to six plastic missiles which you can "live-fire" toward unsuspecting co-workers. If you're ready to wage war against the likes of desk-mounted [USB Missile Launchers][5], the TC Assault is on sale now for $60 -- though, you'll need to add-in a quartet of AAs on your own. Jump past the break to see how Griffin envisions the chopper serving during deployment, along with a detail-packing press release.

Joystiq: Your mother-in-law is going to love Angry Birds Space

[![Image][1] ][2]

Rovio's furious fowl have fought menacing swine on [traditional][3] battlefields, [foreign][4] fronts and even through seasonal holidays -- outer space was _obviously_ the next logical step. In case you [somehow][5] [haven't][6] [heard][7], [Angry Birds Space][8] sees casual gaming's most perturbed feathered heroes escaping terra firma to, as always, reclaim their stolen eggs. _Joystiq_ describes the title as a tweaked, but familiar affair with a new twist that literally changes the gravity of the situation -- challenging players with inventive stages built around planetoids that divert and redirect the birds' trajectories. Sure, it might not resurrect a dead horse, but the new mechanic, they said, is probably enough to keep your in-laws entertained. Hit the source link below check out Joystiq's full review.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 with Tegra 3, Android 4.0 arriving in the US and Canada for $450

The curious thing about the Acer Iconia Tab A510 is that it's been out in the open for months -- we've even handled it -- but for whatever reason, Acer's never publicly acknowledged it as the successor to last year's A500 .

Bluetooth SIG embraces GNSS Profile 1.0 for GPS data sharing

[![Image][1] ][2]

Hot on the heels of a new Broadcom [system][3] that taps into the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in order to reduce first-lock times, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group has quietly adopted GNSS Profile 1.0 for GPS data sharing. According to _Phone Scoop_, the profile can be used by all devices boasting Bluetooth 2.0 and up, and it'll allow GPS-enabled products to share positioning data with another nearby product over BT. Specifically, "the GNSS profile specification defines the Serial Port Profile (SPP) based transport mechanism and associated service discovery record parameters needed to establish a service level connection between two devices," which should make GPS data sharing as easy as contact sharing of yesteryear. Practical applications? With a plethora of location-based social networking apps already on the market, we're certainly playing the wait-and-see game on this one.

NITDroid now available in alpha form, brings Android 4.0.3 to Nokia N9 (video)

[![Image][1] ][2]

It's hardly the first time we've _seen_ Ice Cream Sandwich [parading around][3] on a phone that shipped with MeeGo, but for those waiting for a proper, (semi) stable release to try it on their own [N9][4], heads-up. _NITDroid_ forum administration e-yes has laid out alpha release numero uno, dubbed Project Mayhem, which brings Android 4.0.3 to one of the most beautiful pieces of handset hardware to ever exist. As for things "expected" to work? Dual-boot operation without reflashing, 3D drivers, multitouch, USB networking, Bluetooth, charging and a whole host of other niceties. There's a demo after the break for the nonbelievers, and those with plenty of time (and wits) can get to cracking down in the source link.

[Thanks, Bikfalvi]

[![Kindle app for Android updated with Send-To-Kindle functionality, lets you sling documents to green little robots everywhere][1] ][2]

Fan of reading, you maverick you? Well if you're rocking an Android device, head on over to the Market [Google Play][3] and hit update on that [Kindle app][4], as the online retailer from the Northwest has some fresh bits waiting for you. New today is access to a bevy of illustrated content -- like children and comic books in addition to graphic novels -- coupled with the debut of [Send-to-Kindle][5] support on Android. We're most excited about the latter as it enables plebes to send documents to their "Send-to-Kindle" email address, only to find said files magically pushed to their device for later perusal. And as an added bonus, a copy's conveniently safeguarded for additional downloads at a later date within Amazon's cloud. Made it this far? Clearly you _love_ reading, so go do some more by clicking in the source below.

Fake Android store spotted in China, includes Apple shop-in-shop

[![Fake Android store spotted in China, includes Apple shop-in-shop][1] ][2]

While we often see [robot-themed booths][3] at events like [MWC][4], we've never come across a Google-certified stand outside the show floors -- and chances are what you see above is _definitely_ not it. This [KIRF][5] Android shop is set up in Zhuhai, China, calling itself a "famous smartphone experience store." That said, if you're looking to pay it a visit for the special Green Army treatment, you may just throw a temper tantrum when you see Apple's own section where an array of legit iPhones and iPads are being showcased. Just be sure to get there before the black and white crew [comes knocking][6]...

HTC One V for Telus goes on the record with Sense 4.0 (video)

[![Image][1] ][2]

Remember the [Legend][3]? That, now ancient, lip-laden Android device has found a rebirth of sorts in the [One V][4] -- HTC's entry-level bid for budget smartphone dominance. Initially unveiled at this past Mobile World Congress, the handset was up for a [hardware hands-on only][3], as its unfinished Ice Cream Sandwich OS wasn't quite ready for primetime. That's all changed now as the gang over at _MobileSyrup_ got to take the diminutive fella, destined for a Telus berth, and its Sense 4.0 UX for a test drive. As you'll see in the video below, the phone moves along briskly and without hesitance despite its lack of a dual-core setup. Even [ImageSense][5], the camera tech announced in Barcelona that allows for simultaneous video and photo capture, runs uninterrupted. We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that this is still an early build. So, when the 3.7-incher finally hits the Canadian operator sometime in the next two months, that Googlefied ride could get even smoother.

AT& T rolls out Android 4.0 to HTC Vivid, other devices getting ICS in the 'coming months'

[![Image][1] ][2]

Be still our beating heart. Just [two weeks ago][3] we heard Android 4.0 -- that upgrade lovingly referred to as [Ice Cream Sandwich][4] -- would be reaching the [HTC Vivid][5] "in the coming weeks." We even saw the update trickle in to select devices last week without any official notice from the mother ship. AT&T's finally ready to open the floodgates and pour the refresh out to the masses. This download in particular includes [Sense 3.6][6], but throws in third-party Beats Audio support -- a feature that until now has only been seen in version 4.0. If you're packing a Vivid, just make sure you're hooked up to WiFi and head to the settings to get your download on. If it doesn't find the update yet, you also have the option to sideload it from your computer.

In the same breath, AT&T also made it known that it's still hard at work readying ICS for several other devices, and we can expect the updates to arrive "in the coming months." There aren't any surprises on the list of candidates: the Motorola Atrix 4G and Atrix 2, Pantech Burst and Element and the LG Nitro are all there, as well as a litany of Samsung devices like the Note, Galaxy S II, Skyrocket, Captivate Glide and Galaxy Tab 8.9. There's no more information yet, so the lucky owners of each one will just have to remain waiting on pins and needles for yet another undetermined number of months. Find the press release underneath.

Google Voice gets an ICS update, brings visual voicemail to the missed call log

[![Image][1] ][2]

To date, it seems that [Mountain View][3] has employed a loose definition of the term "integrated," neglecting to offer such [Google Voice][4] features as a unified messaging inbox, or an option to access voicemails without switching back to the dedicated app. Well we have some good news for those of you that haven't completely abandoned voice-based communication. The latest GV update adds a special topping to that Ice Cream Sandwich (sorry, Gingerbread men), letting you launch visual voicemails directly from your Android call log -- and bringing Voice _integration_ a step closer to actually being integrated. You'll also have the power to slow down a message to jot down a callback number, or speed it up to get to the juicy stuff, like a callback number. Full details are at the source link below, or on your very own ICS handset after a quick trip to [Play][5].

Apple patent app portends gadgets made of glass

[![Image][1] ][2]

Thought all those [shattered screens][3] and iPhone 4 backplates would push Apple towards making mobile devices machined from aluminum like its [laptops][4] and [tablets][5]? Think again, friends, because a newly published patent application from Cupertino indicates the company is considering crafting portable computing devices out of glass. The app claims a "substantially seamless enclosure . . . extruded in its entirety with glass material" so that wireless signals can freely flow to and fro, along with a method for manufacturing such a device. Naturally, this is only an application, and it doesn't say exactly what kind of super-durable glass would make this a desirous design change. So, who knows if we'll ever see an all-glass exterior on an iPhone or iPod, but you can get a more in-depth peek at that potential future at the source link below. You can also get a glance at what'll be Android's new anthem should that glass-filled future come to pass.

Android SDK updated with big improvements to emulator and build system

![Image][1]

We're not sure what anniversary the 17th is but, if we had to guess, we'd say its the x86 anniversary. Google has just released Revision 17 of the [Android SDK][2] and ADT and its packing an array of improvements, most notably to the Lint build system and the emulator. While the new build rules, which check performance and guard against errors, are certainly welcome, it's the emulator that's got the headline grabbing changes. First off is the ability to run [x86][3] system images in a virtualized environment (on Windows and OS X), and at near native speeds no less. There is also added support for webcams and sensors, as well as the experimental ability to control the emulator through a tethered android device. For more details, and to download it yourself, hit up the source link.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 preview (video)

[![Image][1] ][2]

[Mobile World Congress][3], a debutante ball of sorts for the wireless industry, is an oddity; set against a landscape more famous for its modernist accents and marathon nightlife than propensity for forward-facing gadgetry. Yet every year, despite this cultural contrast, mobile's best, brightest and even little known descend upon Barcelona to showcase the incoming tide of next-gen wares. It's a wonder, then, that for all the bombast and spectacle, Samsung, a titan in the cluttered Android field, chose to occupy a sizable swathe of the event's booth real estate with a glut of mid-range and less-than-fresh devices. Save for one _notable_ product.

Without the halo of its still secret unicorn, the [Galaxy S III][4], to power the brand's visibility, the company turned the spotlight on its other flagship -- the [Galaxy Note 10.1][5] -- as more of a rightful successor to its [O.G. Galaxy Tab][6] of the same size, _not_ the recently debuted [Tab 2 (10.1)][7]. Confused? That's understandable, but this broad-screened fella's outing marks a stark transition away from the Note as smartphone, established by its [5.3-inch forebear][8], to a concrete series of [S-Pen][9] equipped products. Its beefier dual-core 1.4GHz CPU and 1GB RAM notwithstanding, this is, for all intents and purposes, more of a gentle update than a full-on refresh, as most of the build, screen (1,280 x 800) and camera setup remains virtually unchanged.

Solidifying the unit's place atop the industry's top-shelf mantel, is its inclusion of Google's latest [ICS OS (4.0.3)][10], slathered here in a TouchWiz skin, and the addition of two pre-installed S-Pen apps: Adobe PS Touch and Ideas. So, software improvements aside, why should this tablet, an admitted work-in-progress that's lacking the finishing touches of a final production model, occupy a space on your finely tuned tech radar? Why should you devote a portion of your gadget-lusting heart to the promise of a killer device currently lacking any known pricing or availability? Well, to answer those questions, Samsung let us spend some brief, albeit quality time with the Note's in-development next of kin. So follow on after the break as we explore its digitizer-optimized nooks and crannies and whet your appetites for what's to come.

Survey: 'Ice Cream Sandwich' can't stop Android fragmentation

Despite Google's release of the Android 4.0 OS last year, which was supposed to provide a unified platform for both tablets and smartphones, developers are still throwing their hands up dealing with fragmentation in the Android realm, survey results released this week reveal.

Sprint CEO Defends Company's Decision To Bet It All On the iPhone

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

zacharye writes "Sprint chief executive Dan Hesse is being watched closely by the company's board of directors, but the CEO has to answer to investors and subscribers as well. Last year in October, Hesse revealed that the company is placing a massive $15.5 billion bet on Apple's iPhone, and in a recent interview, Hesse defended the move, which has been criticized by a number of industry watchers. From the article: '"Subsidies are heavy for the iPhone. This is the reason why a high percentage of new customers is important," Hesse said during the interview. "But iPhone customers have a lower level of churn and they actually use less data on average than a high-end 4G Android device. So from a cost point of view and a customer lifetime value perspective, they're more profitable than the average smartphone customer."'"

Meet the Hackers Who Get Rich Selling Spies Zero-Day Exploits

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

Sparrowvsrevolution writes "Forbes profiles Vupen, a French security firm that openly sells secret software exploits to spies and government agencies. Its customers pay a $100,000 annual fee simply for the privilege of paying extra fees for the exploits that Vupen's hackers develop, which the company says can penetrate every major browser, as well as other targets like iOS, Android, Adobe Reader and Microsoft Word. Those individual fees often cost much more than that six-figure subscription, and Vupen sells them non-exclusively to play its customers off each other in an espionage arms race. The company's CEO, Chaouki Bekrar, says Vupen only sells to NATO governments and 'NATO partners' but he admits 'if you sell weapons to someone, there's no way to ensure that they won't sell to another agency.'"

Sony Xperia's 'Made of Imagination' TV spot, directed by Wes Anderson (video)

[![Image][1] ][2]

Sony certainly has its [fair share][3] of [legendary][4] [commercials][5], but its first major spot since [taking over][6] the smartphone torch from Sony Ericsson is a real gem. Dreamed up by an eight-year old longing for understanding of what happens within a pocketable computer and directed by the famed Wes Anderson (you know, the guy responsible for _The Royal Tenenbaums_ and _Fantastic Mr. Fox_), the 'Made of Imagination' ad features a gaggle of robots powering Sony's Android family. The rest, of course, we'll leave to you to enjoy. Head on past the break for the clip, and have a peek at the _TechCrunch_ via below for a bit of the backstory.
