Ask Engadget: best smartphone for the over fifties?

[![Image][1] ][2]

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's [Ask Engadget][3] inquiry is from is from Daniel (no relation), who wants to upgrade his parents cellphones. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at **_ask [at] engadget [dawt] com_**.

> "My parents (aged 52 and 57) are long-time Nokia (dumbphone) users who aren't savvy at all. I told them about how me and my girlfriend's Android phones automatically sync calendars and they want something similar. My father's eyes aren't the best and he's a carpenter, so I thought about a dust-proof handset like the Lumia 800 or the Galaxy Xcover, but I'm worried Android's too technical for them. We're in Europe, so carriers are no problem, but any help you can give would be great. Thanks!"

We're all getting older, so let's try to work out a great handset for those who need a little help. We speak from personal experience when we say it's probably not going to be the Samsung Galaxy Y -- trust us. If you think you've got a better idea, throw it down in the comments below.

Google Talks About Its Ubuntu Experience

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

dartttt writes "There was a very interesting session at the Ubuntu Developer Summit by Google developer Thomas Bushnell. He talked about how Ubuntu, its derivatives and Goobuntu (Google's customized Ubuntu based distro) are used by Google developers. He starts by saying 'Precise Rocks,' and that many Google employees use Ubuntu -- including managers, software engineers, translators, people who wrote the original Unix, and people who have no clue about Unix. Many developers working on Chrome and Android use Ubuntu. Ubuntu systems at Google are upgraded every LTS release. The entire process of upgrading can take as much as four months, and it is also quite expensive, as one reboot or a small change can cost them as much as a million dollars across the company." Bushnell also mentions that Google Drive will soon be available for Linux. Other news out of UDS: there was discussion of a GNOME flavor of 12.10, Electronic Arts reaffirmed that they "won't delay their Windows work for Linux," and Unity 2D is likely to disappear in 12.10.

Matsunichi's MarquisPad MP977 tablet tempts us with $249, dual-core Android 4.0

[![Image][1] ][2]

You might remember [Le Pan's tablets][3] from CES this year, of which only one was truly ready at the time. The company is now ready to hit the US in earnest, but you'll have to forget the company name along with the earlier designs: it's now Matsunichi, and it's planning to kick off its US-ready makeover through the MarquisPad MP977. The tablet shares the 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display of the Le Pan II, but it's now running a slightly speedier dual-core, 1.2GHz [TI][4] chip (likely the same [OMAP][5] 4430 as in the [Droid Xyboard][6]), ships with Android 4.0 out of the gate and comes in a sleeker -- not to mention browner -- shell. Storage is being cut in half over the Le Pan II to just 4GB between the internal memory and a bundled microSD card, though, and the battery is good for a very modest five hours. Nonetheless, the $249 sticker and a May release will put the MP977 in the running with the slower but more capacious [Galaxy Tab 2 7.0][7].

Matsunichi also teased us with a roadmap for a pair of future tablets in the process. The 10.1-inch MP1010 will keep the resolution, but it'll run on a quicker 1.5GHz TI processor and carry a total of 10GB of space when it appears sometime between June and August. If those 0.4 inches of extra glass are just too much to bear, an MP979 will bring all the extra storage and speed of the MP1010 to a 9.7-inch screen sometime between August and September.

HP teases new Envy all-in-one printer, glass and metal dotted all over (video)

[![Image][1] ][2]

We all love teasers, so it's rather swell that HP decided to tease its next Envy-branded all-in-one printer at the [Global Influencer Summit][3] in Shanghai -- almost two years after introducing the [Envy 100][4]. As you can see in the above slide and the _extremely_ brief video teaser after the break, this time round the design will feature a glass control panel, as well as a metal scan bar and a metal hinge under the scanner's see-through lid. Pretty hot, we'd say, and this certainly sets a good example of how the new [Printing and Personal Systems Group][5] is already bringing a better design consistency across what used to be two different groups. For now, stay tuned for more info.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Player 4.2 come stateside on May 13th

![Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Player 4.2 come stateside on May 13th][1]

The last we heard, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 was in [pre-order limbo][2] at Office Depot. Now we have official word that the slate will launch at that outlet -- and also at Amazon, Best Buy, Tiger Direct and others -- on May 13th. As expected, the 16GB WiFi version will go for $400, and if you've followed our [coverage][3], you'll know it's a solid dual-core slate that nonetheless doesn't make huge spec improvements over the original Tab 10.1 (barring that Ice Cream Sandwich OS, of course). The [Galaxy Player 4.2][4] will also make its debut this Sunday, for an asking price of $200. Android-loving moms: rejoice.

Report: Apple dumping Google for own Maps app in iOS 6

[![][1] ][2]

Granted, Apple and Google [aren't quite][3] the bosom buddies they once were, but how far is Cupertino going to free itself from the Android-maker? Well, Apple's [picked up][4] a number of mapmakers and is now reportedly getting ready to unveil a [Google map competitor][5] for iOS. _9to5Mac_ is reporting that the mapping solution will be in-place for the next major version of the mobile operating system, combining technologies gathered with the acquisition of Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9. The star of the show is said to be the 3D mode with graphics nabbed from C3. _All Things D_ has "independently confirmed" the forthcoming app reinvention, with sources adding, (hopefully a bit hyperbolically) that it will "blow your head off." According to rumors, we'll be finding out a lot more come WWDC next month.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 lands at UK's Carphone Warehouse

[![Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 lands at UK's Carphone Warehouse][1] ][2]

Brits left unaffected by last month's US launch of the [Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0][3] can now get in on the Ice Cream Sandwich action: the silver version of the tablet recently landed at Carphone Warehouse in the UK, and the white model is reportedly coming on May 18th. The retailer is offering the 8GB, WiFi-only flavor for £199. Though the Tab 2 7.0 didn't top the charts when it crossed our reviewer's desk, its solid performance and decent battery life make it one of the best value-priced Android 4.0 slates out there. Click through to the source link to reserve this 7-incher, but if it's the silver model you're after, it looks like you'll have to pick up the phone to make the purchase (at least for now).

Dish Network Remote Access iPad app upgrade brings a new UI, more speed

[![Dish Network Remote Access iPad app upgrade brings a new UI, more speed][1] ][2]

Sure, it's not as revolutionary as the new [automated ad skipping built into its DVRs][3], but Dish Network has also just revamped its [Remote Access iPad app][4]. While other pay-TV providers are proud about [streaming channels][5] to mobile devices [only within the home][6] or [shifting a few recordings][7], Dish's tight [Sling][8] integration still provides the most video wherever the user might be, as well as DVR management, a full guide and remote control. The 3.0.3 upgrade brings an entirely new user interface that's optimized for the retina display, guide data without interrupting the video, favorite channels list, and claims to speed up the process of both loading various screens and connecting to stream live TV. Hit iTunes for the updated app and let us know how it's working for you.

Samsung's SHV-E170K has dual-core Snapdragon, LTE and an inferiority complex

[![Samsung's SHV-E170K, has dual-core Snapdragon, LTE and an inferiority complex][1] ][2]

We're sure [Samsung][3] isn't playing favorites... but after that rather extravagant [product launch][4] just the other week, it seems it's released another phone to market with barely a streamer nor slice of cake in sight. The phone in question is the SHV-E170K, and will be coming to South Korea's KT network. The handset was announced with minimal details, other than having a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD (960×540) display, LTE, 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel shooter up front. However, with a little bit of internet cunning (i.e. some discovered benchmark tests) _SammyHub_ has determined that we're dealing with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 on top of Android 4 (TouchWiz'd by the looks of things). It should be out later this month, again, alas, potentially in its [sister's shadow][5].

Insert Coin: Neva smart ski poles keep you connected while shredding powder

_In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line._

[![Insert Coin: Neva smart ski poles keep you connected while shredding powder][1]][2]

Hitting the slopes means ditching your phone for a few hours, or risking losing it while bombing down the mountain. More troubling than an AWOL handset, though, is getting _yourself_ lost in the backcountry sans smartphone while searching for fresh powder. An intrepid skier / software coder is well aware of this, and he's taken to [Kickstarter][3] to fund the Neva ski poles, which keep you safe and connected by wirelessly communicating with the Android or iPhone in your pocket. Incoming calls and text messages pop up on the built-in OLED display, and a finger swipe lets you answer the phone without lifting your gaze from the path ahead, as long as you've managed to [mod your mitts][4] accordingly. It's on you to decide which calls are really so pressing they need to be taken on your downhill runs -- though, to do so, you'll probably want to buy one of those [Bluetooth-enabled jackets][5]. The poles also display temperature, time and elevation, and the related smartphone app lets you toggle features such as calculating your slope angle and tracking your route.

As far as Kickstarter pledge rewards go, the Neva project is quite generous. The base $1 donation gets you early access to the smartphone app, while stepping up to $120 earns you a pair of 7075 aluminum poles (only one is data-enabled), the app for Android or iPhone and a vinyl Neva decal. Of course, you could always shell out $2,500 or more and get a reseller pack of 25 Neva ski pole sets. While those are enticing offers for backers, the project has raised just $851 of its requested $100k -- and there are only 26 days left. Hit up the source link to donate, and check out the video past the break for a look at the poles in action.

Teehan+Lax's 'Do We Have Milk?' answers the burning question with your Android phone, custom jugs (video)

[![Image][1] ][2]

Let's face it: whether or not there's enough good [milk][3] to drink has been an [ongoing problem][4] among the technology set, which is why we're surprised that we're only now seeing true smartphone-milk integration through a project at [Teehan+Lax's][5] Labs group. As the name implies, Do We Have Milk? will figure out whether or not there's enough in the milk bag (did we mention Teehan+Lax is _very_ Canadian?) based on a weight sensor in the jug. Run low, and your Android phone will tell you not just to buy some more but produce a map pinpointing the nearest convenience or grocery store. DWHM? is an experiment that might take awhile to become a real product, if it ever does, but it could have broad implications for consumables of all kinds in addition to saving you from having to eat your [Shreddies][6] dry.

Adobe Creative Cloud rolls out today: storage, syncing and web apps from $50 per month

[![Adobe Creative Cloud rolls out today][1] ][2]

Already upgraded to [CS6][3]? Then maybe Adobe can entice you to take the "radical" next step of signing up to its subscription-based [cloud service][4], which starts today in 36 countries priced at $50 per month on an annual contract, or $75 per month for the non-committal. Will it be worth the potatoes? That depends on whether you can make use of features like online access to CS6 application install files, HTML5 apps like Adobe Muse 1.0 (for code-free HTML design) and Adobe Edge preview (for animations and interactive content), plus integration with Adobe's Touch Apps for [iOS][5] and [Android][6] tablets. You also get that other big cloudy offering: 20GB of online storage for easy sharing, viewing and syncing of all your hard work. Finally, if you're still using an older version of Creative Suite, then Adobe's offering you a pretty hefty introductory discount to entice you onto the slippery upgrade slope. Check out the press release for further price info, or just look up in the sky.

Pebble smartwatch sells out initial supplies, enters Kickstarter hall of fame with $10m raised

[![Pebble smartwatch sells out initial supplies, enters Kickstarter hall of fame with $10m raised][1] ][2]

It looks like adding [Bluetooth 4.0][3] was just the trick for taking the Pebble smartwatch over the edge -- and by over the edge, we mean to an insane level of Kickstarter success. The watch not only crossed the $10 million fundraising mark -- it aimed for a paltry $100k -- but its initial 85,000 units are now sold out. The campaign still has eight days to go, and though additional backers won't get in on that first wave of Pebbles, there's a second batch on the way.

iPhone was Japan's best-selling smartphone in 2011, Android more than comfy as well

[![MMRI phone market share in Japan for 2011][1] ][2]

It's deemed likely that Apple had the [top-selling cellphone in Japan][3] this past fall, but how did it do in all of 2011? Quite well, if you go by MMRI's estimates. The iPhone had 30 percent (almost 7.3 million) of the Land of the Rising Sun's 24.2 million sales among individual smartphone labels, or nearly double Sharp's 17.5 percent. Don't think that Android-powered smartphones like the [Aquos SH-12C][4] didn't make an impact, though: virtually every other smartphone in Japan, 69 percent, was running some flavor of Google's mobile OS. Apple managed to shake up a sometimes insular overall _keitai_ market as well, having come just short of Fujitsu for the top spot in all cellphones. Researchers are expecting the smartphone space in Japan to grow by a healthy 15 percent in 2012, although it's still a wildcard as to whether or not [KDDI's][5] iPhone support will keep Apple riding high for another year.

Intel knocks ARM's legacy app dilemma in Windows 8, says it has a 'big uphill fight' ahead

[![Intel CEO Paul Otellini][1] ][2]

Intel has typically [kept its cool][3] in responding to [Windows 8 on ARM][4], but that war of words (and chips) just got a little more heated at an investor meeting. CEO Paul Otellini saw his more mobile-oriented competition facing a "big uphill fight" without the presence of legacy Windows app support. That's a big drawback for corporate buyers that have legions of traditional apps they want to keep running, the executive said. He also used the opportunity to rib [ARM][5] over a lack of any existing Windows hardware. There's certainly no question that Intel [has a head start][6] in Windows 8 support, but the remarks do come with a degree of irony. Intel is [cutting into ARM's territory][7] with Atom-based Android phones, and while it won't have as much of a problem with legacy OS support as ARM will with Windows, Intel has a lot to prove on its own.

Rumored FTC probe could delay Facebook / Instagram deal, Toaster filter will have to wait

[![Image][1] ][2]

If you were hoping that [Facebook's buyout of Instagram][3] would wrap up quickly and let you directly integrate your [heavily filtered photos][4] into Timeline, you might be disappointed. Citing the ever-present "people familiar with the matter," the _FT_ believes the Federal Trade Commission is orchestrating a competition probe. These kinds of investigations are common for most deals over $66 million -- we suspect the $1 billion Instagram pact qualifies -- but could add six months to a year to Facebook's originally planned spring closure date. The deal is still expected to go through, and you can keep [tilt-shifting your photos to death][5] in the meantime; just don't expect those shots to blanket friends' Facebook walls anytime soon.

Konka W900 hands-on

[![Image][1] ][2]

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, consider [Konka][3] the number one practitioner of that "craft." The company, (in)famous for its OEM-copycatting ways, has set up a booth here at [CTIA 2012][4], letting us get some up close and personal time with its W900. The HTC-esque handset, previously released at [this past Mobile World Congress][5], is yet another in a line of underwhelming Android offerings that subsists on design without delivering on performance. Although, the phone's official spec sheet lists it as running Ice Cream Sandwich, the build we encountered was actually that of Gingerbread 2.3.6 -- a very buggy version, at that. So, don't let your eyes deceive you, what you're seeing on the homescreen is simply a third-party launcher made to ape ICS' more streamlined UI. Beneath that 4-inch WVGA display lies quadband GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900) and WCDMA (2100) radios, VGA front-facing / rear 5-megapixel cameras, in addition to support for WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, the company couldn't confirm what processor's powering this lackluster affair. But no matter, this is one uneven device you can safely ignore.

Blue Droid RAZR heading to Verizon on May 17th, Ice Cream Sandwich nowhere to be found

[![Blue Motorola Droid RAZR heading to Verizon on May 17th, ICS nowhere to be found][1] ][2]

Blue your favorite color? Have a thing for 7.1mm thin slabs? Then today's your lucky day. Verizon just announced an azure flavor of its exquisite [Droid RAZR][3] is set to hit its physical and virtual shelves next week -- though, _it could_ show up at brick and mortar shops a wee bit earlier than that. Aside from the most recent [paint job][4], this Droid RAZR isn't changing much, meaning you'll still get that admirable 4.3-inch, qHD display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU and Android 2.3 onboard (worry not, [ICS _should_ be coming soon][5]). For now, gather up your cash and pay your nearest Big Red store a visit -- who knows, you might just get lucky.

Does Samsung's point-and-shoot departure mark an industry-wide shift to mobile?

[![Image][1] ][2]

[Samsung shuns point-and-shoot cameras, switches factory to pricier mirrorless types][4]

[Samsung Galaxy S III focuses on photography sharing features, not cutting-edge optics][5]

[Samsung considering Android-based digital camera][6]

Samsung's CES camera lineup had a single focus across the range: [wireless connectivity][7]. The company's flagship point-and-shoot, the 14-megapixel [WB150F][8], boasts [built-in WiFi][9] at the very top of its feature shortlist. In fact, until you make your way to the third (and only) capture-related detail (an 18x optical zoom lens), you'd be hard-pressed to distinguish the dedicated device from some of Samsung's other camera-equipped offerings. With its latest generation of "Smart Cameras," the company moved to further bridge the gap between its gamut of portable devices, by bringing key smartphone features to its digital imaging line.

As it turns out, the move was simply a crutch -- an opportunity to refresh models with technologies in which the company has already made significant investments. And it appears to have resulted in only a slight delay of the inevitable. We now know [what to expect][4] for Samsung's point-and-shoots -- pocketable models will step aside to make room for [NX-series interchangeable lens cameras][10], and compact fans will continue to turn to [Galaxy all-on-ones][11] for their [on-the-go shooting needs][5]. Join us past the break for a closer look at how the move could impact the industry, and what the future may hold for the (formerly) beloved point-and-shoot.

Third time's a charm...

Three's a magic number...
Good things come in threes... or is that sneezes?

The Galaxy Nexus is, arguably, not only one of the best Android phones on the market, but one of the best phones, period. So, there's no reason to expect the Sprint variant ($199 on contract) would be anything short of incredible. Still, there's only one way to find out. Follow along after the break as we put the newest member of the Nexus family through its paces and see how it stacks up against its Verizon and unlocked siblings.
