Sony quietly outs Xperia SL: dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3, four hues

[![Sony quietly outs Xperia SL, gifts it with a dualcore 17GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU, four hues][1] ][2]

That oft-rumored successor to the Sony Xperia S smartphone, the [Xperia SL][3]? Sony's now officially listing the 4.3-inch GSM device as "coming soon" on its website, along with full details and specs. As it turns out, the initial leaks were correct -- the SL is a slight refresh of the S, differentiating itself with an additional duo of color choices (silver and pink), a faster dual-core 1.7GHz [Snapdragon S3][4] CPU and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (up from a 1.5Ghz processor and Gingerbread). Aside from all that, it's the same media-focused phone, loaded with the same 720p display and 12.1-megapixel shooter, that we [reviewed][5] in March of 2011. We can't say we're overly excited, but you'll find more info from Sony at the source link below if you're interested.

[Thanks, Olmar]

Motorola posts Android bootloader unlock page, lets just one device pass muster

[![Motorola posts Android bootloader unlock page, starts out small][1] ][2]

Motorola drew fresh respect after it vowed that its Android device customers could [unlock their bootloaders][3], starting with the [Photon Q LTE][4]. Nearly everything about that process was kept in the dark, but it's now been blown wide open: the company has posted a full page dedicated to the process. Getting started will demand the [Android SDK][5], fastboot, new USB drivers and a slightly scary warranty release, but it otherwise goes through a very [HTC-like process][6] that provides an unlock key. Verizon subscribers who were hoping for a surprise [Droid RAZR MAXX][7] unlock won't be happy, mind you; the Photon Q LTE is the only device on the list so far that isn't already unchained as a matter of course. Motorola did characterize the unlock option as a forward-thinking option, which leaves us not so secretly wishing that [high-profile future releases][8] expand the list of unlockable devices a bit further.

Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle officially hits stores tomorrow, yours for $250 until Sept.1st

[![][1] ][2]

After [leaking early][3] and then being [sold ahead of schedule][4] at Best Buy, Samsung's [Galaxy Tab 2 7.0][5] Student Edition Bundle -- yes, that's really its full moniker -- now has a confirmed street date. Starting tomorrow, $250 the bundle (which includes a 8GB version of the tablet finished in glossy white, a keyboard dock and USB peripheral connector) will be available for purchase until September 1st at Best Buy, Tiger Direct, Fry's Electronics, Amazon, and Costco. Specs-wise this Android 4.0 slate skinned with TouchWiz isn't exactly up to par with the venerable $200 [Nexus 7][6], but it's still a potential step up from B&N's [recently discounted][7] Nook Tablets. Beyond that, it also stands out by packing an IR-blaster, microSD card slot and two cameras -- and lest we forget to mention that this particular GTab itself is _normally _$250. Hit up the press release after the break if your interests are piqued enough to consider hitting the halls with this bundle.

XBMC for Android available in nightly builds for that risky media fix

[![XBMC 11 interface][1] ][2]

We only just learned in earnest that [XBMC][3] was [coming to Android][4] last month, and yet we're already looking at workable builds. Kermonine96 at the _XDA-Developers_ forum has started offering his own, unofficial nightly versions of the media center front end, both for regularly supported devices with Neon processor code (most often HTC and Samsung devices) as well as Neon-free hardware, like phones and tablets carrying [Tegra 2][5] chips. Needless to say, the alpha-grade code shouldn't be used as the heart of a mobile media center: hardware decoding isn't functional, battery life is low and even a stable picture isn't guaranteed. That said, anyone who's willing to risk a skip-heavy movie or miss out on plugins now doesn't have to receive the XBMC crew's blessing to get a preview of its Android efforts.

Android Open Source Project targets Sony Xperia S, wants to get experimental

[![Android Open Source Project targets Sony Xperia S, wants to get experimental][1] ][2]

The [Android Open Source Project][3] has typically (and understandably) been a very Nexus-focused affair -- until now that is. Technical Lead for the AOSP, Jean-Baptiste Queru, announced this week that for a "new challenge" he'd like to target new hardware -- and Sony's [Xperia S][4] is the lucky benefactor. The choice of hardware is said to be due to it being a powerful, current device with an [unlockable bootloader][5], with Queru noting that Sony has always been kind to the project. There's not a lot in the git project right now, but Queru appears keen to rally support from developers to get the ball rolling. Wondering how this might differ from CyanogenMod's device targets? Where CM might have a focus on stability, Queru believes that AOSP will head in a more experimental "bleeding edge" direction. Sound like something you can get behind? Head on over to the source for more info.

Sky Sports TV app for Android now available, brings live events to the UK and Ireland

[![Sky Sports TV app for Android now available, gives you all the football soccer you need][1] ][2]

Not to be outdone by [The Worldwide Leader in Sports][3], Sky's just released its own application to keep [football][4] enthusiasts entertained while on the go -- at least [Premier League][5] fans using Android slabs. Unlike the ESPN app, however, [Sky Sports][6] is charging £5 (around $8) per month for its offering, though it will -- with the help of ESPN, no less -- stream over 100 EPL matches live, so you're not limited to only highlights and previews. That being said, Sky Sports TV also lets UK and Ireland folks watch other sporting events, including F1 races, PGA Golf and tennis events like the US Open. The bad news is the app currently doesn't support [Jelly Bean-loaded][7] devices, which, for now, will most likely only affect a [tiny section][8] of Mountain View's user base -- if that's not you, though, the link to download is down below.

CM10 nightly builds now rolling out to select devices

[![CM10 nightly builds now rolling out to select devices][1] ][2]Like Jelly Beans, custom Android ROMs tend to have different flavors -- and [CyanogenMod][3] happens to be a fan favorite. Good thing then, that the [CM10][4] team is now serving nightly builds of its Jelly Bean-based custom ROM update. According to the CyanogenMod Google+ page, CM10 nightlies are now available for the US [Samsung Galaxy S III][5] variants, the original [Galaxy S][6] and the [Galaxy S II][7] (i9100g), the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus S and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (P3), Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (P5), [Nexus 7][8], [Transformer][9] and [Transformer Prime ][10]tablets. The list will fill out with more devices when they are ready, the team says, and will continue to have [CM9][11] updates (now weekly, rather then nightly) at their disposal.

Crackle's free movie streaming expands to the Nook Tablet, Android and iOS apps updated for TV playback

[![Crackle's free movie streaming expands to the Nook Tablet, coming soon to Kindle Fire][1] ][2]

It may not have quite the catalog of Netflix (or the same HD quality), but Sony Pictures' [Crackle][3] streaming service does have one big thing going for it: it's completely free. It's also found its way onto plenty of different platforms (most recently [Windows Phone][4]), and that run has now continued with its expansion onto Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet (but not the Nook Color). What's more, while there's no release date confirmed just yet, Crackle says that the app is "coming soon" to the Kindle Fire as well. It's also revealed that the app has now seen 11 million downloads across all mobile platforms -- a figure that may now see a boost not only from the new Nook app, but from the just-updated Android and iOS apps, which each boast a redesigned interface and support for TV playback via AirPlay or HDMI.

Lenovo reveals K860 Music Phone, quad-core Exynos and a 5-inch screen

[![][1] ][2]

It's been a [pretty good week][3] for [Lenovo][4] all things told, but the Chinese firms isn't stopping to congratulate itself too much. Today, it's business as usual, marked by the [official arrival][5] of the new K860 "Music Phone." That name might lead you to believe this is some function-specific device, but the quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 chip, Mali-400MP GPU, 5-inch (1,280 x 720) display, 1GB of RAM and slight 9.6mm-thick form sing a different song. The 8-megapixel snapper is no slouch either, with support for 100 frames continuous shooting and 1080p video recording (plus there's a 2-megapixel camera around the front, too). If all this sounds like a recipe for battery-drain, there's a 2,250 mAh cell to help keep you going. This will all be running on Android 4.0.4, but currently no word on price or availability -- but it's not like there aren't any [other large phones][6] to think about in the meantime.

Custom ROM brings Android 4.0.4 to the Desire HD, does what HTC wouldn't

[![Custom ROM brings Android 4.0.4 to the Desire HD, does what HTC couldn't][1] ][2]

[HTC][3] wasn't too popular when they [denied][4] Desire HD owners a hearty mouthful of Ice Cream Sandwich, but [as usual][5], the community over at _[XDA Developers][6]_ has stepped up to make it happen. Despite HTC claiming various technical issues as barriers for the upgrade, Team Blackout's Android 4.0.4 build (aka Blackout ICS Incredible) is said to work perfectly on the device. The complete ROM is based on an ICS build for the [Incredible S][7], and it requires you sacrifice your data in a full wipe before you can enjoy that Sense 3.6 UI. However, if you've got the knowledge to take advantage of this gift, you probably know how to backup all those bytes anyway. Hungry? Then head over to the source for your desirable dessert.

GameStop's cloud streaming will spurn consoles, hang with PCs, tabs and TVs only

[![GameStop's cloud streaming will spurn consoles, hang with PCs, tabs and TVs only][1] ][2]

When GameStop [bought ][3][Spawn Labs][4], it was clear that some sort of cloud-based game streaming was on deck, to compete with the likes of [Sony's Gaikai][5] and [Onlive][6] ([now allied][7] with [Ouya][8]). However, the company has just announced that the service will exclude consoles, and work only on tablets, PCs and internet enabled TVs -- a [change][9] from the [original plan][4]. The decision was made "based on consumer feedback" after a private beta, according to the retailer, who hinted earlier that consoles may be a non-starter on the service. It also cited its "success in [selling mobile devices][10], and the imminent launch of new consoles" to justify the change. The program's launch is still planned for next year, but for now the console streaming path is clear for others.

Sony starts pushing Android 4.0 update to Xperia P owners, Xperia U and more coming soon

[![Sony Xperia P review][1] ][2]

Sony has been [steadily deploying][3] its [Android 4.0 updates][4], but it's been leaving some of its newest phones out of the loop. Consider the [Xperia P][5] back in the groove: its upgrade is rolling out over the course of a few weeks, starting today. As always, the exact timing will depend on the carrier and country, and some owners may have to download the update the archaic, wired way instead of through the air. Should the Xperia P deployment still leave your device out of the running, Sony keenly points out that the [Xperia U][6], [Xperia go][7] and [Xperia sola][8] are next on deck to receive a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich. About the only question left is when [Android 4.1][9] will reach any Xperia models, although we're really just thankful to have much of Sony's current lineup on the same page.

Google's Voice Search on Android adds support for 13 additional languages

[![Google's Voice Search on Android adds support for 13 additional languages][1] ][2]

Even though it's also [on iOS now][3], Android is still the first love for [Google's Voice Search][4] and the company announced today it's adding support for an additional 13 languages on the platform, bringing the total to 42 languages and accents understood in 46 countries. The list includes Basque, Bulgarian. Catalan, European Portuguese, Finnish, Galician, Hungarian, Icelandic, Norwegian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak and Swedish. Just like it has since [at least 2010][5] when Voice Actions were introduced it will require Android 2.2 or higher, and is easily accessible either from the search box on your home screen or in the Voice Search app. We should note that it still only understands one language at a time and you may need to change some settings, also the new languages weren't showing up yet on every device we tried -- just some of them. Hit the source link for a few more details on how machine learning was used to extrapolate the pronunciation of all Swedish words based on thousands of samples from native speakers, or just grab a nearby phone or tablet and have Pau Gasol speak some Catalan to it -- although obviously Salvador Dali would be preferred, were he available.

ROCCAT Power-Grid Android version on its way, we go hands-on with the keyboard-augmenting app (video)

[![ROCCAT Powergrid Android version in the pipeline, we go handson with the keyboardaugmenting app video][1] ][2]

ROCCAT's plans to fight back against Razer's glowing [customizable macro-keys][3] and touchscreens are nearing the finish line. Here at [Gamescom][4], the mouse and keyboard maker's [Power-Grip][5] app was at a nearly-finished stage on the iPhone. Better still, the Android version was close behind it -- although it was slightly less polished. The idea is to add a wealth of touchscreen widgets and quickly viewable data to your smartphone, sidestepping the need for pricier hardware solutions. That said, there are plans for [ROCCAT][6] to create some happy medium between the rogue smartphone interface and its more standard keyboard, with ideas gravitating towards a docking space for your phone built into the keyboard. We took the slightly more temperamental Android version for a spin on ROCCAT CEO Rene Korte's Galaxy S III -- check what the app's likely to offer on its December release in our hands-on after the break.
