Intuition by LG hands-on: a pen-enabled competitor to the Galaxy Note for Verizon (video)

[![Intuition by LG hands-on](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/tmo0001dsc03938inline-1347313652.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/intuition-by-lg-hands-on/)

It's a silly name as smartphones go (and one that conjures images of lady-focused razors), but regardless, [LG's Intuition](http://www.engadget.com/tag/lg+intuition/) is now officially [a member of Verizon's lineup](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/lg-intuition-verizon-official/). The 4G LTE device, shown off today at the manufacturer's launch event, is nigh unchanged from the South Korean model [we reviewed this past July](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/13/lg-optimus-vu-review/) (known as the [Optimus Vu](http://www.engadget.com/tag/optimus+vu/)). With a 5-inch 1,024 x 768 True-XGA IPS capacitive display, dual-core S3 CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, 8-megapixel rear camera, NFC, 2080mAh battery and that Rubberdium pen, the only thing separating this stateside iteration from its SK Telecom cousin is the skinned Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS onboard and $199 on contract price. So how does it fare in this Big Red debut? Follow along as we attempt to find what's been lost, if anything, in translation.

Nielsen: more than half of US teens now own smartphones

[![Nielsen more than half of US teens now own smartphones, Android stays in front](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/nielsen-july-2012-us-phone-marketshare.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/nielsen-more-than-half-of-us-teens-now-own-smartphones/)

Yes, we know Android is holding steady at [about 52 percent](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/12/nielsen-has-android-near-52-percent-of-us-smartphone-share-in-q2/) of US smartphone market share. What's interesting is just who's driving growth as a whole. According to [Nielsen](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nielsen/), 58 percent of American teens between 13 and 17 now have a smartphone -- that's a big jump from 36 percent a year earlier and a sign that the youngest owners have a significant sway over where the market is going. Not that young adults don't have an impact. Although the 25-to-34 crowd isn't making as big a comparative leap, its smartphone ownership has climbed from 59 percent to a dominating 74 percent in the same space of time.

No matter how much youth set the pace, it's clear Android is still having an effect. Among the US smartphone buyers Nielsen tracked in the three months leading up to July, 58.6 percent went Google's direction. Most of that gain came from BlackBerry owners switching allegiances, which doesn't bode well when RIM is counting on existing owners to fuel [BlackBerry 10](http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackBerry10/) demand. We'd be careful about citing a one-point shrink in iPhone sales as a shift in the balance of power, however -- while it could be part of a trend, it could also represent the habitual lull in Apple's sales during the weeks before a [major iPhone introduction](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/apple-announces-presumed-iphone-5-launch-event-for-september-12t/).

Google updates Drive app for iOS, Android

Google has updated its Drive mobile apps for iOS and Android , which could help out users who want to use the cloud storage service for getting work done while on-the-go. The bulk of today's updates are geared toward iOS devices, as Google continues to build up support for the top two leading mobile operating systems.

Google Drive mobile app updated, brings editing to iOS

[![Google Drive mobile app updated, brings editing to iOS](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/9-10-2012googledrive.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/google-drive-mobile-app-updated-brings-editing-to-ios/)

The mobile [Google Drive](http://www.engadget.com/tag/googledrive) app just keeps getting better and better. Are we ready to ditch the desktop web app for its [iOS](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/google-drive-for-ios-hands-on/) and Android package? Hardly, but with ever decimal point upgrade the disparity between the two keeps getting smaller. The latest round of updates finally delivers document editing to your iPad and iPhone, including the ability to format text and see live changes made by your collaborators. You can also now view presentations, including speaker notes. The Android version also got a few nice tweaks today, most notable being the ability to see and reply to comments on docs. Google is also promising that real-time updates will be coming to spreadsheets very soon -- which should excite on-the-go number crunchers. Check out the video after the break.

Insert Coin: Impossible Instant Lab makes iPhone photos tangible

_In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line._

[![Insert Coin Impossible Instant Lab](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/impossible-instant-lab.jpg)](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/insert-coin-impossible-instant-lab-makes-iphone-photos-tangible/)

Going back to a physical medium isn't just for [vinyl](http://www.engadget.com/tag/vinyl,record) lovers. The Impossible Project (TIP) wants to make our iPhone photos equally concrete through its extra-simple Impossible Instant Lab. Don't worry about setting up [AirPrint](http://www.engadget.com/tag/AirPrint/) or otherwise jumping through software hoops: the Lab captures the screen and prints it to [Polaroid](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Polaroid/)-compatible instant film as a keepsake. The design is even collapsible and battery-powered in the event you'd like to hand out hard copies on the spot. It's no hobbyist effort, either, with a Leica designer and a former Polaroid factory both involved in making the Lab a reality. TIP is planning to move beyond its initial iPhone 4 and 4S support to include [future iPhones](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/apple-announces-presumed-iphone-5-launch-event-for-september-12t/) and, if all goes well, more commonplace Android hardware.

Investing in this [Kickstarter](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kickstarter/) project sidesteps novelties like t-shirts in favor of the real product -- and provides a very strong incentive to buy early. Backers quick on the trigger can pay as little as $149 for a Lab with a voucher for free film, or about half the $299 retail price. Pay the full cost and you'll get a special black version with an extra voucher, while $2,000 will provide both a gold edition and a trip to the ex-Polaroid factory in Enschede, The Netherlands. Cameras could be in retro photographers' hands as soon as February, but only if TIP reaches its $250,000 funding goal by October 8th. If your parents would like a little more than a Facebook photo gallery as a souvenir, or [Instagram](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Instagram/) just isn't nostalgic enough, you can hit the source link to show support and make the Instant Lab real.

Lenovo outs dual-SIM waterproof A660 ICS smartphone, likely for China only

[![Lenovo A660-dual-sim-waterproof-smartphone](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/lenovo-a660-09-10-12-01.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/lenovo-A660-dual-sim-waterproof-smartphone/)

Lenovo is [burning up](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/25/idc-iphone-wait-cuts-apple-china-phone-share-by-nearly-half/) the Chinese [smartphone](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/06/lenovo-k800-benchmark/) market, and it's just announced a new middle-of-the road 4-inch ICS model, the A660, with two twists: dual-SIM slots and a waterproof case. The [IP67 certification](http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/15/motorola-defy-leaves-the-gym-coming-this-fall-with-slightly-mo/) and Gorilla Glass also make it dustproof, but apart from that, the device carries pedestrian specs: Android 4.0, 1GHz dual-core processor, 800 x 480 screen and 5-megapixel rear camera. As with other [recent models](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/htc-one-s-family-arrives-in-china/) in China aiming down the middle of the road, the A660 boasts several colors, and supports WCDMA + GSM networks with [dual-SIM](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/20/samsung-galaxy-s-duos-official/) / dual-standby capability. There's no word yet on how much or when, but don't start shopping for lime green or burnt orange furniture to match just yet -- few of [Lenovo's smartphones](http://www.engadget.com/tag/lenovo,smartphone) have crossed the Great Wall.

The folks at EVLeaks have got you covered -- outing [another handset's](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/31/nokia-lumia-820-920-leak/) vitals on Twitter. The team's latest breach appears to be the LG Escape, an Ice Cream Sandwich powered Android handset sporting a 4.3-inch qHD display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 5 megapixel rear facing camera, NFC and a 2150 mAh battery. EVLeaks also says the device is primed for AT&T's LTE network, which corroborates nicely with [Federal reports](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/03/fcc-fridays-august-3-2012/). No word on price or availability just yet, but we'll let you know when we hear more details.

Toys R Us 7-inch Tabeo kids tablet coming in October for $150

[![DNP Toys r us Tabeo](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/tabeo-09-10-12-01.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/toys-r-us-7-inch-tabeo-kids-tablet/)

Toys R Us has posted a listing for a new 7-inch child's Android slate priced at $150 called the Tabeo, saying it will go on sale October 1st in stores only. According to the _Wall Street Journal_, the company will announce more details later today, but pictures on the site indicate it will be more conventional in design and not as "kiddified" as the toy store's last model, [the Nabi](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/11/toys-r-us-nabi-android-tablet-lets-junior-play-while-mommy-drin/). That might mean it's aimed at older kids than the previous tab's six-year old and up target, but it better have some killer features for the younger set -- it's up against a [spate](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-kindle-fire-2012/) of [similar products](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/08/ainol-novo-7-crystal-tablet-jelly-bean-ips/) that have already [hit shelves](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/).

HP announces Spectre One desktop, three other all-in-ones

[![HP announces Spectre One desktop, three other all-in-ones](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc01430-1346870395.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/hp-spectre-one-all-in-one-envy-20-envy-23-pavilion-20/)

Didn't you hear? All of HP's top-shelf product consumer products will henceforth have the word "Spectre" in the name. So, it makes sense that the company would expand beyond [laptops](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/hp-spectre-xt-touchsmart-ultrabook-envy-touchsmart-ultrabook-4/) and release a futuristic desktop bearing the same branding. Indeed, the company just announced the Spectre One, a 23.6-inch all-in-one with a skinny design and nice-to-have features like NFC.

Though that aluminum frame and tilting 1080p display are pleasing to look at, the real story isn't what the Spectre One _has_, so much as what's missing. You see, in order to get the system down to 11.5mm thick, the design team had to forgo certain features you might otherwise expect -- features like a TV tuner, touchscreen and even an optical drive. It's a gamble, to be sure, but HP is betting that fashion-forward, tech-savvy users won't really mind. (The jury is out on whether a Windows 8 all-in-one without touch is a missed opportunity.) In any case, HP _did_ include four USB ports (two of them 3.0), HDMI input, an Ethernet jack, Beats Audio and a memory card reader, with optional discrete graphics and SSDs. The components are also easily serviceable via a back door, if tinkering is your idea of fun. Lastly, the One ships with a keyboard, [Magic Trackpad](http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/30/apple-magic-trackpad-review/)-style wireless touchpad and two NFC tags, which can be assigned to favorite websites.

In addition to the Spectre One, HP also trotted out three other all-in-ones. At the mid-range, you'll find the Envy 20 and 23, which have 20- and 23-inch screens, respectively, with 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. Rounding out the list, the company announced the low-end Pavilion 20, another 1080p system. Put simply, the two Envy systems have touchscreens, Beats Audio and will be offered with Ivy Bridge processors only; the Pavilion is non-touch, and will be offered with both Intel and AMD chips. Whichever you choose, HP's old [Magic Canvas](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/04/hp-renames-its-touchsmart-software-magic-canvas-plans-to-instal/) UI for Windows is gone; in its place, the "Connected Suite," which includes a mix of desktop and mobile apps for sharing photos, streaming music and remote access. Though the mobile applications work with iOS and Android devices, you'll need a Windows 8 laptop on one end of the setup -- specifically, an HP PC. That's right: for now, at least, the software will only work on the company's own computers.

The Envy 20, Envy 23 and Pavilion 20 will all be available on October 23rd, with the budget Pavilion going for $499 and the two Envys starting at $849 and $1,099, respectively. The Spectre One doesn't arrive until November 14th, but when it does it will cost $1,299.

Samsung may not have spilled the beans on [US variants](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/galaxy-note-ii-us-launch/) of the Galaxy Note II, but phablet fans have already set their sights on [the](http://www.engadget.com/tag/att) [usual](http://www.engadget.com/tag/tmobile) [suspects](http://www.engadget.com/tag/sprint). Aiding rumors, for instance, are a collection of screenshots showing the phone running on both [Verizon](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Verizon/) and Ma Bell's networks. A _BreifMobile_ source says that the AT&T version of the oversized handset is being tested, as are T-Mobile, Bell Canada and Sprint variations. The AT&T version is said to be a dead ringer for the [international model](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/samsung-galaxy-note-ii/), retaining its quad-core Exynos processor while snubbing the network's branding. Much like Sammy itself, the source didn't have much to say about availability -- just "soon." Can't wait? Skip on down to the source link below to tease yourself with leaked screenshots.

VMK preps Africa-designed Elikia smartphone with $170 price, fast track for apps

Congo-based [VMK](http://www.engadget.com/tag/VMK/) has been blazing a trail for mobile devices in Africa: its [Way-C tablet](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/20/vmk-way-c-tablet-shows-off-its-full-figure-on-sale-for-300-in/) proved that the continent could go its own way without leaning on Asia or Europe. The company promised several months ago to address the same gap with smartphones, and the result is here in the form of the Elikia ("Hope"). The hardware won't shake the cellular world's foundations with its 3.5-inch (and 480 x 320) display, 512MB of RAM, a 650MHz processor and both 5-megapixel rear as well as front VGA cameras, but that's not the point -- at $170 US off-contract, it's much more within the reach of Congo residents, and it even uses the unofficial Holo Launcher to bring a taste of Android 4.0 to what's really Android 2.3 underneath. There's also a minor revolution in app purchasing. As Google Play won't take Congo's credit cards, VMK has its own app store and prepaid gift cards to give the country a similar experience. You'll have to sign on to local carriers Airtel, MTN or Warid to use an Elikia in the near future, but we're hoping the phone expands its reach and levels the playing field.
