An anonymous reader writes "iOS 6 has seen rapid adoption among iPhone and iPad users, reports developer David Smith. Smith's applications like Audiobooks get around 100k downloads weekly and he's taken to mapping the adoption of Apple's software releases over the last couple of years. This update's data shows a 35.4% adoption of iOS 6, with iOS 5.x holding court at 71.5% adoption. That's a pretty rapid pace, eclipsing Android Jelly Bean's 2-month adoption levels of 1.2% easily."

Alibaba spins out Aliyun team with $200 million investment, pep talk

[![Acer CloudMobile with Aliyun](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/aliyun.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/22/alibaba-spins-out-aliyun-team-with-200-million-investment/)

You can imagine that the team building Alibaba's [Aliyun](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Aliyun/) mobile OS must have [hurt feelings](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/15/google-wants-better-compatibility-for-android/) following Google's accusations that Aliyun is just a [corruption of Android](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/16/google-senior-vp-of-mobile-aliyun-os/). Alibaba chief Jack Ma is keen to restore some of that wounded pride, at least on the surface. The CEO has used a since-confirmed staff memo to spin out Aliyun as a separate entity that will "safeguard the healthy growth" of the platform and Alibaba's mobile strategy. It's not solely an instance of tough love, either: Alibaba is putting $200 million into the new firm and will use executive Wang Jian as a link between the two sides, having him serve as the CTO for both companies. With that in mind, Ma's ultimate intentions aren't clear. While the separation may be a sign of a tighter focus on software, it also reduces the impact for Alibaba if anything drags Aliyun down -- and either motivation would be helpful for a company devoted to the web before anything else.

An anonymous reader writes "It's no secret that Mozilla has been working on a mobile OS. Previously codenamed Boot2Gecko, the project focused on a purely HTML5 based system that worked in many ways like current mobile devices. As the project grew into Mozilla OS, the company has laid out a partnership with ZTE that will have real world devices in certain markets early next year. Testing for this OS had previously consisted of a compiled ROM that would be flashed over a handful of Android devices. Now, Mozilla has moved into full fledged product evaluation mode with their own custom developer phone."

Samsung Galaxy S III Developer Edition for Verizon Wireless now available to order

[![Samsung Galaxy S III Developer Edition for Verizon Wireless now available to order](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/shamwow.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/22/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-developer-edition-for-verizon-now-available/)

Ever since the bootloader of the [Galaxy S III for Verizon Wireless](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/09/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review-verizon-wireless/) was [cracked wide open](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-verizon-bootloader-unlocked/), there's much less of a clamor for the [Developer Edition](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/16/galaxy-s-iii-developer-edition-for-verizon-appears-on-samsungs/) of the handset from Samsung. That said, the unsubsidized smartphone is now available to purchase -- for backorder, anyway -- directly from the manufacturer, which gives all owners the ability to easily unlock the phone's bootloader and thus delight in the world of custom ROMs. As of now, only the Pebble Blue variant is available, but purchasers may choose from the 16GB ($600) or 32GB ($650) versions. We still maintain that Verizon Wireless gave its subscribers a pretty raw deal with the Galaxy S III, as all other carriers left it to the owner's discretion of whether to unlock their phone's bootloader. We wouldn't expect Big Red to change its tune any time soon, but you can take solace knowing that the hacking community and manufacturers [have your back](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/droid-razr-m-and-hd-dev-editions-bring-unlockable-bootloaders-to/).

WiFi Alliance certificate teases Tizen flavored Samsung Galaxy S III

[![WiFi Alliance certificate teases Tizen flavored Galaxy S III, ](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/gs3tizenwificertjtjt.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/22/wifi-alliance-certificate-teases-tizen-flavored-galaxy-s3/)

Ever wondered what Samsung's flagship [Galaxy S III](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/) phone might be like, if it ran another OS? Okay, arguably something [along those lines](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/samsung-announces-ativ-s-a-4-8-inch-windows-phone-8-device/) is already under way, but if a curious [WiFi Alliance ](http://www.engadget.com/tag/wifi+alliance)certification entry is to be understood, [Tizen](http://www.engadget.com/tag/tizen) might have made its way on to the phone already. The hook here is the product name. The GS III also goes by the less snappy moniker of [GT-I9300](http://www.engadget.com/tag/GT-I9300), and it's the appearance of GT-I9300_TIZEN in the certification list that has got chins wagging. Of course, a stamp from the WiFI Alliance means little out here in the real world, where everything is still looking rather Android, but it doesn't hurt to imagine the Koreans experimenting with idea, and it [wouldn't be the first time either](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/14/tizen-gets-play-time-on-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-hd-lte-shows-off-ne/).

All Over But the Funding: Open Hardware Spectrometer Kit

New submitter mybluevan writes "The Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science is putting together an open hardware spectrometer kit on Kickstarter. The kits are built using an HD webcam, discarded DVD, and a couple other odd bits. They've also put together a kit for your smart phone and open-source software for desktop, Android, and iOS. Need to analyze the contents of your coffee, the output of your new grow lights, or a distant star on a budget? Just build your own spectrometer, or pick up the limited edition steampunk version." Besides making cool hardware, they'd like to "build a Wikipedia-style library of open source spectra, and to refine and improve sample collection and analysis techniques. We imagine a kind of 'SHAZAM for materials' which can help to investigate chemical spills, diagnose crop diseases, identify contaminants in household products, and even analyze olive oil, coffee, and homebrew beer."

Skyhook sues Google for patent infringement... again

Last time Google found itself in [court proceedings opposite Skyhook](http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/16/skyhook-sues-google-for-business-interference-and-patent-infring/), it was facing anticompetitive and IP legal claims for [forcing Android OEMs to use Google's location services](http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/17/skyhook-google-forced-motorola-to-drop-our-location-service-de/). Yesterday, Skyhook filed a new complaint alleging that Google is infringing nine of its patents. _FOSS Patents _reports that the IP in question is, like last time, all about geolocation technology. The patents cover various aspects of a WLAN-based positioning system, and all but one of them were granted _after_ the prior lawsuit, hence the new legal action. We've yet to hear Google's side of the story, but you can take a peek at Skyhook's airing of grievances at the source below.

Priced at $499, the Galaxy Note 10.1 features a 10.1-inch display, a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos 4 quad processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.9-megapixel front shooter for placing video calls. Sadly, the Galaxy Note 10.1 ships with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but Sammy has promised that it'll be blessed with Jelly Bean "[very soon](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/samsung-says-jelly-bean-update-coming-to-galaxy-s-iii-and-note-1/)." In addition to its snazzy innards, the Galaxy Note 10.1 includes its _signature_ S-Pen and offers 50GB of free storage from Dropbox for two years. If you think this sounds like all that and a <strike>bag of chips</strike> plate of poutine, you can purchase the Galaxy Note 10.1 at Staples and other major Canadian retailers.

[![iPhone 5 iOS 6 app roundup what's big, what's new ](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/flipboard-iphone-5-1348266640.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/iphone-5-ios-6-app-update-roundup-new-versions-for-a-taller-world/)

Call it a hunch, but we suspect that at least a few of you picked up an [iPhone 5](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/) today, or at least made the leap to [iOS 6](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/ios-6-review/). If you're in either position, you may be wondering just what apps to feed Apple's flagship (or that fresh new firmware) once it's ready to go. We've got a quick-hit list of titles that have been updated to take advantage of the tall display and new OS that go beyond [Apple's own work](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/apple-updates-nearly-every-app-for-ios-6-sneaks-in-key-updates/). The biggest upgrades of the lot come from [keynote darling](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-iphone-5-liveblog/) CNN as well as [Flipboard](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Flipboard/): both have done more than add extra columns on the iPhone 5, offering an interface you won't see on any mere 3.5-inch iPhone. Some bread-and-butter apps have made the launch week cut as well, such as [Facebook](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/facebook-revamps-messenger-for-android-with-friendlier-chats/) and Twitter.

There's even more if you're willing to dig deep. Third-party Twitter client [Tweetbot](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Tweetbot/) beat the official app to the punch by days, and we've likewise spotted updates to [Evernote](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Evernote/), its rival Remember the Milk and Yelp. We know some apps aren't fully iPhone 5- or iOS 6-native -- [Instagram](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Instagram/), for example, and most anything from Google -- but it's apparent that the holdouts are increasingly the exception, rather than the rule. Did you catch any other noteworthy apps that received a boost in recent hours? Let fellow owners know in the comments.

Vic Gundotra says Nik's 'high-end tools and plugins' will survive. Snapseed? Maybe not.

[![Vic Gundotra says Nik's 'high-end tools and plugins' will survive](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/snapseed-ipad.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/vic-gundotra-says-niks-high-end-tools-will-survive/)

After Google effectively killed [Sparrow's](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/20/google-aquires-sparrow-the-apple-focused-email-app-maker/) apps when it purchased the company (they're still available and supported, but don't expect much future development) there was some worry about the future of [Nik Software](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/17/google-buys-snapseed-developer-nik-software/). Well, Vic Gundotra took to Google+ to salve some of those fears.

> Earlier this week I proudly welcomed +Nik Software to Google. They've been making pictures more awesome for 17 years, and we're excited to bring Nik's expertise to the entire Google+ community!
>
> I also want to make something clear: we're going to continue offering and improving Nik's high-end tools and plug-ins.
>
> Professionals across the globe use Nik to create the perfect moment in their photographs (e.g., [http://goo.gl/aDtkO](http://goo.gl/aDtkO)), and we care deeply about their artistry.

There is one bothersome caveat in that quote: "high-end." Gundotra may be promising a future for Capture NX and Efex Pro, but it's clear that the popular [Snapseed](http://www.engadget.com/tag/snapseed) doesn't fit that description. Now, he has not expressly announced the death of the [Instagram](http://www.engadget.com/tag/instagram) competitor, but it seems to us that the writing is on the wall. The Android camera app may already have a set of [friendly filters](http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/18/ice-cream-sandwich-revamps-android-camera-and-gallery-features/), but it lacks the simplified sharing and marketing buzz of [Facebook's recent acquisition](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/facebook-completes-acquisition-of-instagram/). Don't be surprised if the Snapseed team simply gets folded into Google+ or Android while its creation slowly withers and dies.

Sony's Xperia acro S now on sale in unlocked form for $650

[![Sony's Xperia acro S now on sale in unlocked form for $650](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/acro-s-on-sale.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/sony-xperia-acro-s-smartphone-on-sale-pricing-details/)

Shortly after leaping through the [requisite FCC hoops](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/09/sony-xperia-acro-s-fcc/), Sony's 1.5GHz [Xperia acro S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/30/sony-announces-xperia-go-and-xperia-acro-s-waterproof-and-dual/) is now on sale to able and willing Americans. For those who've forgotten, the 4.3-inch smartphone packs a 720p panel, IP55 and IP57 dust / water resistance, inbuilt NFC, Bluetooth, a 12.1-megapixel camera around back, a battery good for up to eight hours of yapping and [Android 4.1](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/) (Jelly Bean). In unlocked form, it'll set you back $649.99 -- or, for the Sony faithful, just 64,999 Rewards points. Sadly, you can't get one stamped with a Sony Ericsson logo for the sake of nostalgia at any price. Per usual, the source link is awaiting your order.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Vevo's website redesign simplifies the video watch page, adds artist pages

Chances are you've enjoyed [Vevo's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/vevo) music video catalogue in [one](http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/14/more-music-videos-now-playing-on-android-youtube-app-more-pre-r/) [form](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/22/facebook-partners-up-to-bring-music-and-videos-to-your-profile-t/) or [another](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/vevo-app-brings-ad-supported-music-videos-streaming-to-the-xbox/), and purists who prefer .com access are being rewarded today with a fresh website design. The "video watch page" was previously littered with related clips, a playlist and other distractions, which have now been dispatched for greater focus on the tune at hand. Much of this has been moved to "artist pages", a new pop-up hub (pictured above) which is full of extra info on your chosen act. Head over to Vevo to see the enhancements for yourself, and with impending [OUYA support](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/01/ouya-wrapping-up-funding-with-limited-brown-metal-console-vevo/), you might want to consider it your primary dispensary for that daily dose of [Biebzilla](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/tosy-justin-bieber-announce-mrobo-we-go-hands-on-dance-off-v/).

Looxcie HD brings 1080p and WiFi streaming to a helmet near you

[Looxcie](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Looxcie+) isn't just a luxurious sounding word (and terrible pun), it's also a maker of life-sharing head-mounted cameras. Up until now, it would only let you capture your life in a rather pedestrian 480p, but the new Looxcie HD does away with that, letting you grab that bike ride in full glorious high-definition. Other additions include WiFi (previous iterations relied on Bluetooth) to hook up to your Android or iOS device with, a larger 1,200 mAh battery and improved low light performance. Owners of previous models might spot that with new features comes a new, larger form. The price of evolution it seems. The price for the device, on the other hand, is $279, or $329 if you opt for the "Explore" bundle, which incidentally you can pre-order now. Peep at the source for more.

UK pricing begins to filter out for Motorola's Intel-powered RAZR i smartphone

[![UK pricing begins to filter out for Motorola's Intelpowered RAZR i smartphone](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/razri-interest.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/motorola-razr-i-intel-medfield-uk-pricing-ship-details/)

Soon after it's [unveiling](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/motorola-razr-i/), the Intel-based [RAZR i](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/motorolas-razr-i-benchmarks-intel-2ghz-medfield/) showed up in _Clove_'s listings with a SIM-free price of £342, and now it looks as if a few more outlets are pushing pricing details to the world. Expected to storm the UK in October, the phone should ship to Virgin Media customers for around £23 per month on its Premiere Tariff, while T-Mobilers will be able to score one for £0 to £31 per month depending on the contract. All told, not too shabby for the world's first 2GHz Atom-backed Android phone, and if you're eager to push all of this [iPhone 5](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/) stuff aside, at least you know precisely how many quid to save up between now and next month.

Hulu Plus, HBO Go and Max Go apps for Android updated with support for closed captions

Sound familiar? Just days after the mobile apps for [HBO, Cinemax and Hulu added closed captions support on iOS](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/14/hulu-plus-hbo-go-max-go-ios-closed-captions/), a similar slew of upgrades have come to their [apps](http://www.engadget.com/tag/hbogo,android) on Android. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any change in the number of supported devices for any of them at this time. [Hulu's upgrade](http://www.engadget.com/tag/huluplus,android) also adds on the option to share videos via Twitter, Facebook and other services, although the 10 second rewind button added on iOS does not appear to have made the cut. As usual you should see the new versions rolling around in the app store, hit the source links for more info.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus finally lands Jelly Bean update

[![Verizon Galaxy Nexus finally lands Jelly Bean update](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/9-22-2012vzwgnexjb.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/verizon-galaxy-nexus-finally-lands-jelly-bean-update/)

As Alton Brown is fond of saying, "your patience will be rewarded." Today, those of you with [Verizon-branded Galaxy Nexus](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/16/verizon-galaxy-nexus-review/) handsets (at least those that didn't run out and download an unofficial Jelly Bean) are finally getting your reward. Android version 4.1.1 (better known as [JRO03O](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/jelly-bean-pre-release-for-verizon-galaxy-nexus-now-available/) among the hack happy) is being pushed out OTA to Big Red customers, complete with the preemptive magic of Google Now in tow. If you haven't seen an alert yet, head to the About Phone section in your settings, and tap System Updates. Having recently been welcomed back to the [AOSP](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/verizon-galaxy-nexus-welcomed-back-into-the-aosp-fold/) fold, we'd have hoped for an update sooner, but it's still among the first wave of handsets to move to the latest version of Android. Now if only this would restore [Google Wallet](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/14/verizon-galaxy-nexus-lose-google-wallet/) functionality. (Hey, a guy can dream can't he?) The complete announcement from Verizon awaits after the break.

Do smartphones and tablets grant us more time away from work, or less?

Smartphones and, to some extent, tablets, are blurring the line between our social lives and our work lives.

German court rules that Motorola, Samsung don't violate Apple touch event patent

[![Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/samsung-galaxy-nexus-and-iphone-4s.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/german-court-rules-that-motorola-samsung-dont-violate-apple-patent/)

Motorola and Samsung just caught a break from the law after [a few](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/13/apple-wins-injunction-against-motorola-in-germany-over-rubber-b/) [hard knocks](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/14/itc-says-apple-didnt-violate-four-samsung-patents/). A Mannheim, Germany court has ruled that neither company infringes on an Apple patent covering how an OS responds to and ignores touch events. While we don't yet know the full details, patent lawsuit guru Florian Mueller suggests that the German judge took the same point of view that thwarted Apple's claims in the Netherlands and the UK: the particular patent was just too broad to stick. It's a potentially important win, as a ruling of violation could have led to serious problems with keeping Android-based Motorola and Samsung devices in stores; other patents are more easily circumvented. However, it's still something of a Pyrrhic victory for a pair of companies that have lately been facing the threat of near-term bans and [steep damages](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/25/breaking-down-apples-1-billion-courtroom-victory-over-samsung/).

LG Optimus L7 leaks for Boost Mobile as the Venice

[![LG Optimus L7 leaks for Boost Mobile as the Venice](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/lg-venice.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/lg-optimus-l7-leaks-for-boost-mobile-as-the-venice/)

The merriment continues at _evleaks_, which just spilled another smartphone via Twitter. This time it's the LG Venice for Boost Mobile: a rebadged version of the [Optimus L7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/lg-optimus-l7-review/) that just so happens to sport a handsome silvery backplate. This is the second version of the Optimus L7 to be geared for US shores, the first being the [Splendor](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/lg-splendor-now-available-at-us-cellular-for-80-after-rebate/) for US Cellular. Absent any drastic changes, shoppers can rightfully expect to find an Android 4.0 smartphone that's paired with a single-core 1GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch WVGA display and a 5-megapixel camera that'll capture video at 720p. Unfortunately, pricing for the Venice remains up in the air, which makes it difficult to know whether it'll provide much of a value proposition within Boost's lineup. Likewise, the all-important release date is also a mystery, although with the carrier [actively](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/zte-warp-sequent-now-available-on-boost-mobile-for-200/) [refreshing](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/22/boost-mobile-announces-samsung-galaxy-rush/) [its fall](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/22/boost-mobile-galaxy-s-ii-4g/) [lineup](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/17/kyocera-hydro-hitting-boost-on-august-3rd-for-130-lets-you-get/), a near-term arrival is certainly within reason.

Sony Xperia T review: a new 4.5-inch smartphone flagship that isn't quite new enough

[![Sony Xperia T review The new smartphone flagship that isn't quite new enough](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/xperiatreview-1348165887.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/sony-xperia-t-review/)

### More Info

* [Sony Xperia TX hands-on](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/sony-xperia-tx-hands-on/)
* [Sony Xperia T appears with AT&T branding](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/sony-xperia-t-att/)

Sony's Xperia T goes by a few names. Depending on which country you're in, you might pick it up as the [Xperia GX](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/09/sony-xperia-gx-packs-13-megapixel-camera-and-4-6-inch-hd-display/), or possibly even the [TX](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/sony-xperia-tx-hands-on/). The final review sample that's been passed our desk, however, is the Xperia T, the European HSPA version, headed to O2's UK stores in the coming weeks, at which point it will be free on £36 per-month contracts and likely replace the [Xperia S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/08/sony-xperia-s-review/) as Sony's Android flagship. In comparison to Sony's Spring smartphone, there's a similar 720p display, now stretched out to 4.6 inches, a different 13-megapixel camera, a new 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor and Android ICS -- with the promise of Jelly Bean soon after it hits store. The Xperia T also revives a [familiar hardware curve](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/06/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-s-review/) and has picked up onscreen Android buttons on its design journey. Design twists and promises of the latest OS aside, has Sony finally built a top-tier phone capable of going toe-to-toe with the smartphone heavyweights? Have a look after the break.

Vellamo benchmark adds CPU and memory tests, here's how it rates the One X and GS III

[![Vellamo benchmark updated to tests CPU and memory, here's how it rates the One X and GS III](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/vellamo-lead.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/vellamo-benchmark-adds-cpu-and-memory-tests/)

Qualcomm's [Vellamo app](http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/14/qualcomm-launches-vellamo-browser-benchmark-for-android-devices/) has been a part of the furniture in our Android benchmarking suite for a while now, providing a fun little test of browsing and networking speeds on almost any Android device. Version 2.0 adds something extra, however: a section called "Metal" that is all about putting your processor and memory through the wringer.

As a quick taster, we ran the new HTML5 and Metal tests on the HTC One X (both global and AT&T) and the Galaxy S III (global and Sprint), settling on the average of three consecutive results. Conspiracy theorists who think that Qualcomm's app favors its own processors will only find further ammunition in the CPU results, however the HTML5 scores actually give the QCOM devices much _less _of a lead than the old Vellamo did, scoring all four handsets roughly equally. You'll find the table overleaf, along with a publicity video that explains the update.

iOS 6 becomes 15 percent of Apple mobile device traffic within 24 hours

[![iOS 6 becomes 15 percent of Apple mobile device traffic within 24 hours](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/ios-6-growth-chitika.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/ios-6-becomes-15-percent-of-apple-mobile-device-traffic-in-24h/)

There's been some trepidation among Apple device users over the upgrade to [iOS 6](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/ios-6-review/) given that it [takes](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/11/apple-officially-gives-google-maps-the-boot-launches-own-maps-a/) [away](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/youtube-standalone-ios-app/) some components while adding others. You wouldn't guess it from the initial upgrade rate, however. Both ChartBoost and Chitika have determined that about 15 percent of iOS data traffic was already coming from Apple's latest release within its first 24 hours of availability -- not bad, considering that it took Android 4.0 roughly [eight months](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/01/ice-cream-sandwich-now-on16-percent-of-android-devices/) to reach a similar ratio and [iOS 5](http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/ios-5-review/) about five days to hit 20 percent. ChartBoost adds that iPhone owners were the quickest to upgrade, which is only logical when the iPhone 4S gets [the most new features](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/12/psa-which-ios-6-features-can-my-device-run/). The contrast between Android and iOS was entirely expected, knowing Apple's limited hardware pool and reduced carrier oversight. We're more interested in the differences between iOS versions: they suggest that whatever advantages people see in iOS 6, as well as a widespread over-the-air update system, have been enough to spur on many early adopters.
