An anonymous reader writes "Is Google planning on integrating an antivirus scanner into Android? A just-released Google Play store app update, as well as the company's recent acquisition of VirusTotal seem to hint that yes, Google is looking into it. 'Google yesterday started rolling out an update to its Google Play Store app: version 3.8.17 from August was bumped to version 3.9.16 in October. Android Police got its hands on the APK and posted an extensive tear down. The first change noted was the addition of new security-related artwork (exclamation icons and security shields) as well as the following strings: App Check 'Allow Google to check all apps installed to this device for harmful behavior? To learn more, go to Settings > Security.''"

Kimera Systems wants your smartphone to think for you

[![Kimera Systems wants your smartphone to think for you](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-12-2012kimera.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/13/kimera-systems-wants-your-smartphone-to-think-for-you/)

When Google took the wraps off [Now](http://www.engadget.com/tag/googlenow) we all got a pretty excited about the potential of the preemptive virtual assistant. Kimera Systems wants to build a similar system, but one that will make Mountain View's tool look about as advanced as a Commodore 64. The founder of the company, Mounir Shita, envisions a network of connected devices that use so-called smart software agents to track your friends, suggest food at a restaurant and even find someone to paint your house. That explanation is a bit simplistic, but it gets to the heart of what the Artificial General Intelligence network is theoretically capable of. In this world (as you'll see in the video after the break) you don't check [Yelp](http://www.engadget.com/tag/yelp) or text your friend to ask if they're running late. Instead, your phone would recognize that you'd walked into a particular restaurant, analyze the menu and suggest a meal based on your tastes. Meanwhile, your friend has just reached the bus stop, but it's running a little behind. Her phone knows she's supposed to meet you so it sends an alert to let you know of the delay. With some spare time on your hands, your phone would suggest making a new social connection or walking to a nearby store to pick up that book sitting in your wishlist. It's creepy, ambitious and perhaps a bit unsettling that we'd be letting our phones run our lives. Kimera is trying to raise money to build a plug-in for Android and an SDK to start testing its vision. You check out the promotional video after the break and, if you're so inclined, pledge some cash to the cause at the source.

T-Mobile's holiday roadmap leaked: LG Optimus L9, HTC Windows PhoneX spotted

[![DNP TMobile's holiday roadmap leaked LG Optimus L9, HTC Windows PhoneX spotted](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/tmobileroadmap2012-1.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/t-mobile-holiday-roadmap-leaked/)

According to a leaked roadmap on _TMoNews_, the magenta carrier appears to have a few tantalizing offerings coming its way this holiday season. A curious BlackBerry handheld dubbed the Armstrong, a color refresh of the [Samsung Galaxy S II](http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsung+galaxy+s+ii/), a possibly Android-flavored Huawei Summit and the [LG Optimus L9](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/09/lg-optimus-l9-for-t-mobile-hands-on/) are all slated to launch just on or before Halloween. Going into the next month, we see the [HTC Windows PhoneX](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/windows-phone-8x-us-availability/) making the pre-Thanksgiving cut with a potential debut of November 14th. Notably absent are the [Samsung Galaxy Note II](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/09/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-for-t-mobile-hands-on/) and the [Nokia Lumia 810](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/09/nokia-lumia-810-for-t-mobile-hands-on/), but that doesn't mean they won't be there when December rolls around. Of course, this info didn't come through official channels, so we wouldn't bank on any of the handsets as holiday gifts just yet. Still, its nice to know they're coming, and you can get the full details on these and other devices at the source.

Comcast quietly updates DVRs with ability to list stored programs from the web, mobile apps

[![Comcast snaeks the ability to see, play DVR'd shows from iOS and web into latest update](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/xfinitytvdvrmanagerios091212.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/comcast-xfinity-tv-dvr-manager-update/)

While being able to schedule DVR recordings from your mobile device is nice, an update currently being pushed to some [Comcast DVRs](http://www.engadget.com/tag/comcast,dvr) is adding the ability for users to check exactly what shows are stored there from an app or web browser. Previously the only remote info users could get from their DVRs was the percentage of storage currently in use and what recordings were scheduled to take place, but now users can see individual recordings, choose to watch any of them now, change their deletion priority, or even delete them remotely. Hopefully that doesn't lead to any unintentional interhousehold griefing as users manage the often inadequate hard drive space in their cable DVR, but it can certainly put ones mind at rest to know _The League _ (or whatever your show of choice might be) was successfully archived.

The update is quietly being pushed out as a software update for the DVR itself, and should appear automatically for users on the web or in their [iOS app's DVR manager](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/10/comcast-xfinity-tv-ios-app-adds-integrated-dvr-manager-so-you-do/) ([Android](http://www.engadget.com/tag/xfinitytv,android) users can access it as well, but via the browser). We noticed the change after our Motorola DVR got an update that also made the name of a channel appear under the number when typed in from the remote. It worked well, although a few much older recordings were not listed online every new one was, which could explain the quiet rollout that Comcast confirmed to us jsut began yesterday. One other change taking place at the same time is a new Xfinity TV Player app for iOS that is focused solely on streaming VOD, mirroring a [similar app already out on Android](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/comcast-xfinity-tv-player-vod-android/). While the Xfinity TV app on the platform has handled streaming duties [since 2010](http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/comcast-xfinity-remote-for-ipad-does-streaming-video-we-record/), the dedicated player has a different menu and even player interface, and we wouldn't be surprised to see the feature excised from the general app eventually.

Alcatel announces One Touch Evo 7 ICS tablet in Europe, doesn't say when it's coming

[![Alcatel announces One Touch Evo 7 ICS tablet in Europe, doesn't say when it's coming](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/alcatelonetouchtab-1350058840.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/alcatel-one-touch-evo-7-ics-tablet-in-europe/)

Just as we had [talked about](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/05/alcatel-onetouch-t10-tablet/) Alcatel not necessarily being known for its hardware offerings, the company's now announcing its first "modular" tablet, the One Touch Evo 7. As the moniker adequately implies, the [Ice Cream Sandwich](http://www.engadget.com/tag/IceCreamSandwich/) slate boasts a 7-inch display (mum's the word on the resolution), which is paired alongside an unnamed processor that's clocked in at 1GHz, 1GB of RAM and a microSD slot is available to take care of up to 32GB of storage needs. While the One Touch Evo 7 is set come out of the box with WiFi capabilities only, [Alcatel](http://www.engadget.com/tag/alcatel/) says a 3G option will be available as a separate bundle via a "removable 3G module." -- a fitting fact given some of the slate's additional characteristics, such as detachable colorful frames. Unfortunately, Alcatel made no mention of when it plans to release its [One Touch](http://www.engadget.com/tag/onetouch/) device, but we'll let you interested Euro folk know as soon as those details come out.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE update to bring global roaming, Isis wallet

[![HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE update to bring global roaming and Isis wallet ](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/htc-droid-incredible-4g-lte-update-doc.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/htc-droid-incredible-4g-lte-update-to-bring-global-roaming-and-isis/)

HTC's [Droid Incredible 4G LTE](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/06/droid-incredible-4g-lte-review/) gave us a pleasant surprise by providing a capable Android phone that didn't have to be supersized. It's gone largely untouched since its mid-year introduction, though, which makes a new and imminent update all the more important. The upgrade's biggest trick is support for [Isis mobile payments](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/28/isis-mobile-payment-system-primed-for-september-launch-supporte/) that more officially throws Verizon's hat into the NFC payment ring. Anyone living beyond Isis' coverage will still want to check for the update when it's ready -- the patch switches on global roaming, allows remote technical support, makes Tango video chats useful and improves LTE connection quality. No matter what you're looking for, Verizon's tendency to start over-the-air updates within days of posting documentation leaves a likely short wait before the most recent Droid Incredible gets a breath of fresh air.

Nokia finishes offloading Vertu, rumors claim Vertu plans a matching switch to Android

[![Vertu Constellation Quest in gold](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/10/vertu-constellation-quest-gold.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/nokia-finishes-offloading-vertu-with-android-switch-rumored/)

Nokia has ended one of the more significant chapters in its tumultuous history: the Finnish phone giant has finished [divesting Vertu](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/14/nokia-layoffs-vertu/) to private equity firm EQT VI, shedding direct control of the definitive [luxury phone brand](http://www.engadget.com/tag/vertu). The formal switch lets Nokia keep a 10 percent stake and move 1,000 staffers to the newly independent company. Where Vertu goes next may be more intriguing, however. There's no official word on any change of direction, but that hasn't stopped tipsters from claiming to _TechCrunch_ that there's a big shakeup ahead. Supposedly, former Nokia VP [Anssi Vanjoki](http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/anssi-vanjoki-on-quitting-nokia-i-didn-t-become-the-ceo-it-is/) will finally get the phone maker CEO position he's been looking for through a Vertu spot, and he won't simply follow in his former employer's footsteps -- upcoming Vertu phones may use Android, not Windows Phone. While it's a very unconfirmed rumor, a switch-up wouldn't be completely surprising when Vertu is still an all-Symbian house that needs more than just a [few extra jewels](http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/vertu-signature-precious-is-awash-in-sea-of-sapphire-and-regre/) to stay relevant.

Alleged LG Nexus 4 reviewed by Belarusian tech site

[![LG Nexus 4 reviewed by Belarusian tech site](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/ebc2f22924b79772b94a6876dd0f7b63.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/lg-nexus-4-reviewed-by-belarusian-tech-site/)

Well, the Belarusian tech site Onliner.by made waves yesterday by publishing the clearest photos yet of the alleged [LG Nexus](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/lg-e960-mako-nexus-leak/), the [E960](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/lg-e960-mako-surfaces-in-photos-may-be-the-future-nexus-phone/). Now the site has published a quick and dirty review of the unannounced phone, which may go down as one of the worst kept secrets in smartphone history. An editor at the site claims to have scored a prototype version of the handset, and as such, any judgements made should be taken with a grain of salt. There were plenty of bugs, including serious issues with Android Beam, which in our experience has never really worked as well as advertised anyway. This model also only comes packing 8GB of storage, which will most certainly change before launch given its lack of a microSD slot. The site found that both the screen and the 8-megapixel camera were a vast improvement over the Galaxy Nexus, however benchmarks showed that while it's [quad-core Snapdragon](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/lg-optimus-g-att-hands-on/) outpaced last-year's Nexus, it didn't put up the staggering numbers many were expecting. For the complete review hit up the source.

We're all portable: cameras, phones, and computers that you can take with you anywhere you please are our specialty this week. Google Play Store gets good cop / bad cop APK update, will add wish lists and malware scanner

[![DNP Google Plays good cop bad cop in new APK update with malware scanner, wish list](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/google-play-apk-10-12-12-02.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/google-play-store-update/)

A recent scan by _Android Police_ through the latest Google 3.9.16 [APK](http://www.engadget.com/tag/apk/) for its Play Store has revealed that [wish lists](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/16/google-play-wishlist-gift-card-leak/) are coming along very well, thank you, and that Mountain View will likely introduce a malware scanner soon too. The latter hasn't appeared on our radar before, and it looks like the search giant will soon be able to scope all the apps you've already installed and also bar the door to any suspicious-looking software before it can sully your smartphone or slate, unless you specifically request otherwise. So, perhaps you'll feel a bit safer once the Google Play portal is being watched from [both sides](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/02/googles-bouncer-service-scans-the-android-market-for-malware/).

Dell XPS 12 Windows 8 convertible priced at $1, 199 and up, ships this month with pre-orders starting today

[![Dell XPS 12 Windows 8 convertible priced at $1,199 and up, ships this month with pre-orders starting today](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/dsc02811.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/dell-xps-12-pricing-availability/)

Well, _that's_ a form factor you don't see [that often](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/01/noveros-solana-is-an-800-netbook-running-windows-7-and-android/). Of all the Windows 8 PCs we've seen so far, the [Dell XPS 12](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/dell-xps-10-xps-12-duo/) is tough to forget, if only because it's the only one whose screen flips inside the hinge like an easel. We already got hands-on at IFA last month, but now we're learning some key details -- you know, like pricing and availability. Dell just announced that it will go up for pre-order today, starting at $1,199. (It will ship [October 26th](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/18/microsoft-windows-8-ship-date-october-26-confirmed/), the day Windows 8 launches.) That's a princely sum indeed compared to some of the other Windows 8 ultraportables we've seen, but it's important to remember that this runs not on an Atom processor, but an Ultrabook-grade CPU. And while you might assume that 12.5-inch display makes do with 1,366 x 768 resolution, it's actually a dense 1080p panel. Hopefully we'll get to review a final unit soon, but in the meantime feast yourself on a fresh round of hands-on shots below.

Best Buy reveals Insignia Flex Tablet, 9.7-inches of Android 4.0

[![Best Buy reveals Insignia Flext Tablet, 97inches of Android 40](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/insigniaflextabbessiebuyjt.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/best-buy-reveals-insignia-flex-tablet/)

It's been a little while since we visited anything from [Best Buy](http://www.engadget.com/tag/best+buy)'s [Insignia brand](http://www.engadget.com/tag/insignia), but this new tablet from the retailer just caught our (or rather a tipster's) eye. Called the Insignia Flex, it's a 9.7-inch, dual-core 1GHz, Android 4.0 slate that promises up to ten hours of battery life. As you can see, the design is unique enough to stand out from the crowd, with a squared off look, and an almost [Xperia T](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/sony-xperia-t-review-a-new-4-5-inch-smartphone-flagship-that-is/)-esque curve to the bezel. That's about all we know about it at the minute, other than it being penciled in for release a month from now. We're hoping that this could land with a smile-friendly price tag, but if you want to know for sure, hit up the source link to follow along on Facebook.

[Thanks, Matt]

If you've been desperate for new [Gmail on your Android](http://www.engadget.com/tag/gmail,android), a leaked APK obtained by _Android Police_ -- that may or may not have come from one of those [LG E960 Mako](http://www.engadget.com/tag/e960) (alleged) Nexus phones that it seems everyone has -- is sporting some fresh tweaks. As seen in this demo video, the update adds pinch-to-zoom on individual messages, as well as swipe to delete or archive. The app itself is labeled as version 4.2, and while the APK isn't widely available, the site reports that if it is released you'll need to be rooted and running Android 4.0 or higher to get an early taste of the future.

With the most recent update, however, the hard-working devs from [Mountain View](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Google/) are aiming to fix those woes, announcing that it's now "easier than ever" to publish reviews on the platform. The new rating system, as you can see above, will let users in on a more simplified scoring method, with the ability to simply rate as "poor-fair," "good," "very good" or "excellent." Meanwhile, Google also launched a revamped, free-of-charge Zagat app for Android, which brings all the features you love to both handsets and slates. You'll find the fresh application at the Google Play link below.

South Korea delays ban on iPads and iPhones until Apple can appeal

[![iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/iphone-galaxy-nexus.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/south-korea-delays-ban-on-ipads-and-iphones-until-apple-appeal/)

Apple and Samsung have been recreating the Cold War through their own [mutually assured destruction](http://www.engadget.com/tag/apple,samsung,lawsuit) policy, and nowhere is that more apparent than their [Pyrrhic victories](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/23/samsung-apple-patent-lawsuit-south-korea/) in South Korea. For Apple, however, the pain will be just a little easier to bear. A Seoul court has confirmed that it's staying the ban on older iPads and iPhones until Apple can complete the appeals process; the Cupertino crew won't face the full penalty unless the appeals court upholds the verdict. Samsung hasn't yet asked for a similar pause on a ban covering some of its Android devices, though, which could lead to at least a momentarily lopsided situation in Samsung's home country. It's nonetheless a brief reprieve in a war that sadly won't end anytime soon.

Microsoft Sues Motorola Over Mapping Patents

jfruh writes "The mobile patent wars continue, with two of the world's biggest tech companies about to blunder into direct conflict. Microsoft holds a number of patents that it claims give it rights over mobile map applications that overlay data from multiple databases (map info from one database and store location info from another, for instance). Many Android vendors already pay Redmond licensing fees for their mapping apps; now Redmond is going to court in Germany to sue one of the holdouts: Motorola Mobility, which is of course owned by Google."

iOS News Reader - Thursday, October 11, 2012

However, Schn also says the biggest news is that Microsoft is preparing Office 2013 for Android and iOS in the form of native applications - information derived from a press conference by Petr Bobek, Czech Microsoft product manager of Microsoft Office, but that the main message came from the company headquarters in Redmond.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini pops up, we go hands-on

[![STUB Samsung Galaxy S III mini hands on born in Frankfurt](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/wmgalaxysiii-mini01-1349973361.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-mini-hands-on/)

When word first started trickling out that Samsung planned to make a mini version of the Galaxy S III, it had the air of plausibility -- we've heard from many a person about the too-large size of that phone for their hands. Then, a [press invitation](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/03/samsung-teasing-galaxy-s-iii-mini-october-11/) confirmed that "something small" was in the works, and finally mobile chief JK Shin [confirmed](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/10/samsung-mobile-head-confirms-4-inch-galaxy-s-iii-mini-announceme/) that a smartphone of that name would be announced today in Frankfurt, Germany.

Now Samsung's spilled all the beans, and revealed the new [Galaxy S III mini](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-mini-launch/), a slightly paler version of its bigger brother in specs as well as screen size. Our own short time with the phone certainly revealed that its pushing all the same "inspired by nature" buttons of the original Galaxy S III (and the Galaxy Note II), with the same exact rounded pebble shape and layout. The marketing rep we spoke to from Germany said that the company's research found that users wanted the same phone design as the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III, but in a smaller form factor -- to more easily fit smaller hands and pockets. Samsung said those folks don't necessarily need or want the most powerful phone they can get their hands on and are content to have those mid-level specs -- 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, a 4-inch, WVGA AMOLED screen and 32GB max of memory.

It remains to be seen if those specs will dilute the Galaxy S brand, but in any event, we found the phone certainly doesn't give our regular-sized hands cramps like its older brother can (let alone the Note II), and the comfortable shape of the original works even better with the mini version. The button placement is identical to the larger handset, and the phone will come out of the box with nearly identical Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean functionality -- with the added Samsung Touchwiz twist, of course. That includes new niceties like the multi-screen option, and a brief play with the phone shows the same butter factor, even with the lesser dual-core processor. So might this mini-me Galaxy S III model sway you over to the Samsung Galaxy family if you disdain the giant screen of its predecessor? Check out the gallery below to see how the size compares with the rest of the family, with a video coming soon.

Samsung announces Galaxy S III mini: 4-inch Super AMOLED, 1GHz dual-core, NFC

[![STUB Samsung announces Galaxy S III mini 4inch screen, fullmonty specs](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/galaxy-siii-mini-official-1349971835.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-mini-launch/)

Samsung has just announced the Galaxy S III mini, a 4-inch David version of its Goliath big brother -- will it be worthy of its name? The rumor mill [churned out](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/10/samsung-mobile-head-confirms-4-inch-galaxy-s-iii-mini-announceme/) that it might be a dumbed down version, but an oblique comment by mobile head JK Shin [suggests otherwise](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/10/samsung-mobile-head-confirms-4-inch-galaxy-s-iii-mini-announceme/) -- either way, we're on the scene in Frankfurt, Germany to give you the long (and short) of it. According to the spec sheet we just received, this Android 4.1 phone features a dual-core 1GHz chip (which is good news for the 1,500mAh battery), 1GB RAM, 8 or 16GB of internal storage plus an extra 32GB maximum via microSD. The 4-inch Super AMOLED screen comes with a WVGA resolution, while the main camera takes five-megapixel photos plus 720p video, and there's a VGA front-facing camera as well for fans of video chats. There's obviously the usual bundle of radios as well, including 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, GPS, GLONASS, FM radio, Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) and even NFC, but for now, this 111.5-gram TouchWiz device will only support HSPA 900/1900/2100 networks along with EDGE 850/900/1800/1900. Stay tuned for our upcoming hands-on.

Microsoft sues Motorola in Germany again, claims Google Maps violates patent

[![Microsoft and Motorola](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/moto-microsoft.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/microsoft-sues-motorola-in-germany-again-over-google-maps/)

Motorola isn't going to escape as cleanly [as it would like](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/05/german-court-sides-with-motorola/) from Microsoft's patent lawsuit campaign. Microsoft has sued Motorola once more [in Germany](http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola,microsoft,germany), only this time it's waging a more direct fight against Motorola's owner Google. The lawsuit claims that Motorola devices violate a patent for taking map information from one set and overlaying it with data from another -- a technique that describes Google Maps, not to mention virtually every internet-connected mapping system we know. Details aren't yet available for the devices allegedly at risk, but the accusation would make it harder for Google, Motorola or both to simply [code around the problem](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/moto-pulls-phones-and-tablets-from-german-site/) if they lose. No doubt Microsoft is counting on just that obstacle to have the [RAZR](http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-razr-i-review/) maker fall in line [with everyone else](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/02/honeywell-next-up-to-get-a-patent-license-from-microsoft-goes-t/) and take a license just for using Android.
