Nexus 4 priced at £390 by purported Carphone Warehouse in-store display placard

[![Purported Nexus 4 instore display placards list price at 390 euros Carphone Warephone leak, l](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/11-pm.jpeg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/nexus-4-leaked-pricing-euro-carphone-warehouse/)

Oh, [Carphone Warehouse](http://www.engadget.com/tag/CarphoneWarehouse/) -- it just can't seem to keep what it knows about the LG / Google [Nexus 4](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nexus4/) under lock and key. Just days after briefly [listing the phone on its website,](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/lg-nexus-4-appears-release-date/) purported in-store displays for the yet unannounced device have leaked out to _Android Authority_. While essentially of the details are the same as what we saw last (1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 SoC, 8MP cam, 12-hour talk time rating, etc.), the listing reveals that the "sim-free" phone itself will sell for £390 (about $504) -- previously we'd only seen the per-month pricing at 31 euros, which is also found here. There's no mention of that October 30th sale date this time, and it would seem unlikely now given that Google's had to indefinitely [postpone](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/27/google-scrubs-october-29th-event-over-hurricane-sandy-worries/) its NYC-based Android event for the 29th due to hurricane Sandy. For now, you can get more details from the source link below.

5 Emergency Apps to Download Before Hurricane Sandy Hits [VIDEO]

Hurricane Sandy will make landfall on the East Coast within the next few days. If you've got a smartphone, you can quickly, easily and cheaply turn it into part of your emergency readiness kit by downloading a few useful apps.

Ubuntu lands on Nexus 7 slates with Canonical's one-click installer

[![Ubuntu lands on Nexus 7 slates with Canonical's one-click installer](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/ubuntu-nexus-7.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/27/ubuntu-nexus-7-installer/)

If you'd rather not let your [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) live out its life as a Jelly Bean-toting device, Canonical's freshly minted [Ubuntu](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/ubuntu-12-10-launches-with-web-apps-and-search/) Nexus 7 Desktop Installer can help. Instead of allowing Ubuntu to [ride](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/21/ubuntus-full-desktop-os-coming-to-multi-core-android-devices/) [shotgun](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/24/ubuntu-for-android-hands-on/) with Android, the installer requires unlocking the device's bootloader, which wipes the slate clean. Once the Nexus 7 is unlocked, started in fastboot mode and connected to an Ubuntu machine, the one-click installation software takes care of the rest. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes later, your tablet will be running full-blown Ubuntu. Since development is currently focused on getting the core of the desktop OS up and running, there's no tablet-specific [Unity UI](http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/ubuntu-11-04-natty-narwhal-brings-new-unity-ui-controversy-to/) to see here. However, [Raring Ringtail](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/ubuntu-raring-ringtail/) is set to flesh out the mobile experience with an emphasis on sensors, memory footprint and battery life, among other features. Those who regret ousting Google's confection-themed operating system can simply reload their device with stock Android. For the entire walk through, hit the first source link below.

Google postpones October 29th event over Hurricane Sandy worries

[![Google scrubs October 29th event over Hurricane Sandy worries](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/google-oct-29-event-postponed.jpeg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/27/google-scrubs-october-29th-event-over-hurricane-sandy-worries/)

We hope you weren't basing your calendar around Google's [big Android event](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/17/google-android-nexus-event-october-29th/) on October 29th. The company has confirmed to us that it's postponing the event to an as yet undetermined point in the future due to Hurricane Sandy, whose East coast arrival will follow so closely before the New York City gaterhing that Google isn't willing to take the chance on its big day. If you're experiencing a sense of deja vu, you're not alone -- Google [delayed last year's event](http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/samsung-and-google-postpone-ice-cream-sandwich-and-galaxy-nexus/) revealing the Galaxy Nexus out of respect for the late Steve Jobs. While it's not what we'd call an auspicious start to Google's holiday launches, we can at least hope for an [abundance](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/26/google-nexus-10-leaks-android-tablet/) of [riches](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/22/lg-exec-claims-nexus-due-at-october-29th-event/) when the company is ready once again. The full statement waits below.

Oakley unveils Airwave ski goggles equipped with Recon's MOD Live heads-up display, iOS app

[![Oakley's Airwave ski goggles riders with Recon's MOD Live HUD ](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/dsc04204-1351299283.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/27/oakley-unveils-airwave-ski-goggles-equipped-with-recons-mod-liv/)

Remember late last year when Recon Instruments introduced its [MOD Live](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/08/mod-and-mod-live-android-ski-goggles-give-extreme-analytics-we/) Android-enabled heads-up display for the likes of ski goggles?Joining the ranks of other optics makers, Oakley's partnered with the company to seamlessly integrate the augmented-reality unit into its own goggles, dubbed Airwave. It's not just another shell for the system, either, as Oakley will be providing a companion app that'll work with iOS -- which seems to be first official instance as such since Recon itself said it would be coming earlier this year. The MOD Live itself is otherwise the same right-eye positioned system (providing a perceived 14-inch display at five feet away) we've seen for almost a year now, so don't expect to get the clearest picture if you're left eye dominant or use contact lenses for distance. Furthermore, there's still GPS for tracking friends / navigation, and Bluetooth to work with a water-resistant wrist remote that allows you to control your smartphone and the display itself. Of course, this also means Recon's Android SDK will also be workable, as will your [Contour](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/26/recon-instruments-partners-with-contour-makes-mod-live-into-ski/) camera.

If you're interested in Oakley's spin on the MOD Live, the Airwave will hit Apple stores on October 31st for $600 in your choice of black with a black Iridium lens, or a white with black graphics and a "fire" colored variant of the lens -- yes, they're interchangeable just like most of Oakley's other specs. If you're curious for further details in the meantime, check out the simulation video and press release after the break. Now, how about those full-on smart glasses to take on Google Glass as the company's CEO [mentioned in April](http://www.engadget.com/tag/oakley/)?

HTC One X sees Jelly Bean rollout in Taiwan and Singapore, One S update reportedly coming soon

[![HTC One X sees Jelly Bean rollout in Taiwan and Singapore, One S update reportedly coming soon](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/htc-one-x-jelly-bean-ota-update.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/27/htc-one-x-s-jelly-bean-taiwan-asia/)

We've known for months that HTC [intends](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/20/htc-confirms-jelly-bean-for-one-x-one-xl-and-one-s/) to upgrade the [One X](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/02/htc-one-x-review/) to Jelly Bean, but now it appears the update is finally going live, at least for folks in Taiwan. Members of the _XDA Developers_ forum are chiming in about a 352.87MB OTA update that's available within both HTC's home country and Singapore, which brings Android 4.1.1 and HTC Sense 4+ to the One X. Jelly Bean's appearance for the handset matches an [earlier report](http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fchinese.engadget.com%2F2012%2F10%2F16%2Fhtc-one-x-plus-one-s-special-edition-launch-in-taiwan%2F&act=url) from _Engadget Chinese_ of an incoming update promised by HTC Taiwan. According to _PocketDroid_, general manager of HTC North Asia, Jack Tong, announced that One X users within Asia will see the update begin to roll today, and that the [One S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/02/htc-one-s-review/) will also receive Jelly Bean a tad later. We've reached out to HTC to verify Mr. Tong's comments, and for clarification of specific regions throughout Asia.

Xbox SmartGlass now available in Google Play, brings console integration to Android

[![Xbox SmartGlass now available in Google Play, brings console integration to Android](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/xbox-smartglass-android.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/26/xbox-smartglass-now-available-for-android/)

Hot on the heels of the [Dashboard update](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/16/xbox-360-dashboard-update--2012/) for the [Xbox 360](http://www.engadget.com/tag/xbox360), Microsoft's [SmartGlass](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/04/microsofts-smart-glass-gets-official-app-brings-airplay-esque/) integration is now a reality for Android users. The companion app branches out from the earlier [My Xbox Live](http://www.engadget.com/tag/MyXboxLive/) app for Android and allows direct control of some console features from Google-powered gear. While Windows Phone users will find the [tightest integration](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/xbox-smartglass-launch/) of all, the Android port still lets users steer through the Dashboard, input text, browse the web (with zooming), search for local content, and control media playback. Players can still chat with their friends and modify their Xbox profile if they're not planning to lurk around the system all day. The interface is strikingly similar to past releases (including Android) and still demands at least an 800 x 480 screen for admission -- sorry, [Wildfire S](http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/01/htc-wildfire-s-review/) fans. You'll find a full roster of features after the break, and can hit up Google Play at the source link below for your own remote.

HTC Losing Ground Faster Than RIM or Nokia

zacharye writes "How bad is HTC's current tailspin? So bad it makes Nokia look like a growth company. HTC's handset volume declined by -43% in the autumn quarter vs. Nokia's -23% volume decline. This is very interesting because HTC is using Android, the world's most popular smartphone OS, that is powering 40% annualized growth among its vendors. Nokia is limping along with an unholy mix of the obsolete Symbian platform, the moribund S40 feature phone platform and a niche OS called Windows Phone."

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: October 26th, 2012

This morning we're living in the wake of the impact that both Microsoft and Samsung made with their events earlier in the week - and what a week it was! Microsoft brought on the fury with a massive Times Square showing of their Windows 8 launch family while Samsung brought Kanye West to their Galaxy Note II event.

Google Nexus 10 leaks: Android 4.2, Exynos 5250 (1.7GHz), 2, 560 x 1, 600 resolution

[![Google Nexus 10 leaks Android 42, Exynos 5250 17GHz, 2,560 x 1,600 resolution](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/nexus10.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/26/google-nexus-10-leaks-android-tablet/)

Unless we're looking at one of the most elaborately photographed fakes in the world, this is the Nexus 10. With the [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) apparently going over quite well at just $199, it was only ever a matter of time before the Nexus family expanded to house a 10-incher. With Google's own Vic Gundotra [posting images](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/26/vic-gundotra-posts-nexus-10-photos/) from a unit that he's using at some exotic locale, it seems that another unit has slipped beneath the camera at _BriefMobile_. The site has managed to apprehend one of the 10.1-inch slates, and in turn has discovered quite the bounty of information.

Internally, there's (reportedly) a dual-core 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos 5250, a Mali-T604 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (though no microSD expansion slot), a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, NFC / WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a Super AMOLED panel with a drool-worthy 2,560 x 1,600 screen resolution -- yeah, that's well into "Retina" territory at 298.9 pixels per inch. You may recognize that Exynos 5250 from Google's recently released [$249 Chromebook](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/google-11-6-inch-arm-based-samsung-chromebook-hands-on/), but here, it's being used to push [Android 4.2](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/10/android-4-2-shows-up-in-our-server-logs-shocks-no-one/). Those hungry for more can visit the source link, but don't go in hoping to extract an asking price.

Pantech Flex review

_[![Pantech Flex review](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/flex-dsc03688-article-1351022134.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/26/pantech-flex-review/)_

Pantech is known for producing budget Android smartphones that punch above their weight, and the Flex is no exception. Available now on AT&T for $50 with a two-year contract, it delivers a dual-core Snapdragon S4 -- the same chip that lurks within mightier phones such as the Galaxy S III and One X -- along with a qHD display and LTE connectivity. The phone certainly hits a number of the check boxes for value seekers, but there's something that makes the Flex very different from other smartphones on the market: it has a dual personality.

Folks, prepare for memories of At Ease, Microsoft Bob and Packard Bell Navigator to come rushing back. The Pantech Flex features a unique launcher known as Easy Experience, which caters to those who might find Ice Cream Sandwich overwhelming. Fortunately, there's also a standard launcher for experts. In that regard, the Flex is deserving of its name. Unlike most handsets on the market, it's targeting both broke college students and technophobes just the same. Of course, we're here to answer a greater question: is the Pantech Flex worthy of being your next smartphone? Join us after the break for the answer.

Samsung Galaxy Premier shows at Taiwan regulator, carries few traces of its Nexus roots

[![Samsung Galaxy Premier shows at Taiwan regulator, carries few traces of its Nexus roots](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/samsung-galaxy-premier-taiwan-ncc.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/26/samsung-galaxy-premier-shows-at-taiwan-regulator/)

The [Galaxy Premier](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/22/samsung-galaxy-premier-rumor-glbenchmark/) has so far existed only on the fringes; we've seen unconfirmed benchmarks, model name mentions and press renders, but virtually nothing tangible. Taiwan's NCC regulatory body has made Samsung's phone much more corporeal with several photos of the device under its GT-i9260 badge. While the live look only confirms 3G and short-range wireless on the outside, it proves that there's very little of that claimed [Galaxy Nexus](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/24/galaxy-nexus-hspa-review/) DNA left on the outside -- other than the possible 4.65-inch screen, the Premier has fallen completely in line with the [Galaxy S III's](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/) design language. It's safe to presume that we won't be using stock Android on this handset, then. We're just left waiting on Samsung for confirmation of the mid-range smartphone's details and exactly when we can give it a try.

HTC to launch Best Deals coupon app for discount-chasing Europeans

In a curious move by smartphone maker [HTC](http://www.engadget.com/tag/HTC), it's announced it'll be launching a new [coupon service](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/13/facebook-offers-starts-rolling-out-spamming-your-news-feed-with/) called "Best Deals." The app / widget combo will aggregate offers from 12 pushers, including familiar names like LivingSocial and Trip Advisor, although HTC hopes to add more categories in the future with further partnerships. The service will show you local deals tailored to your tastes, as well as exclusive offers on HTC products, which you can sort, review, bookmark and share from within the app. Discount-hunters from the UK, Italy, Germany, France and Spain will get first access to a catalogue of 1,700 initial deals on the [8X](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/windows-phone-8x-by-htc-hands-on-microsofts-modern-mobile-os-p/) / [8S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/htc-windows-phone-8s-hands-on/) Windows phones and Android [One X+](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/02/htc-one-x-plus-tegra-3-android-jelly-bean-sense-4-plus/). OG [One X](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/02/htc-one-x-review/) and [One S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/02/htc-one-s-review/) owners will find themselves that little bit richer shortly after, snagging the app via a software update. There's no word on plans to bring the deal aggregator to North American shores, but for Europeans, it's time to start thinking about which spa treatment you want first.

Vic Gundotra posts Nexus 10 photos to Google +

If anyone is going to get their hands on new Nexus hardware first, it's going to be Google top-brass. So when photos from Senior Vice President of Engineering, [Vic Gundotra](http://www.engadget.com/tag/vic%20gundotra), show up on his Google + with "Nexus 10" in the details, we pay attention. The pictures show some idyllic scenes from the beach, but what we're all interested in is the EXIF data. So, 2,046 by 1,536 you say? That's 3-megapixel by our calculations, which may not be the true original resolution of the image of course. With a big Google event [just around the corner](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/17/google-android-nexus-event-october-29th/), though, we imagine we won't have to wait long to find out more.

Telus plans LG Optimus G launch on November 13th, other carriers remain shy

[![LG Optimus G review unbranded](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/lgoptimusgreviewlead01.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/26/telus-plans-lg-optimus-g-launch-for-november-13th/)

LG committed to launching its mostly superb [Optimus G](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/lg-optimus-g-review-a-quad-core-powerhouse-with-nexus-aspiratio/) to the three major carriers in Canada sometime in November. Just which day the phone would arrive was left a mystery, though, even when Rogers started taking pre-orders. It's taking another provider to sort things out: [Telus](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Telus/) has gone on the record with plans to carry the quad-core smartphone starting November 13th, right at the height of what could be a [busy](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/windows-phone-8-event-oct-29/) [month](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/22/lg-exec-claims-nexus-due-at-october-29th-event/). That's all that the future-is-friendly network can say for now, although Rogers may have provided the remaining piece of the puzzle when it gave out $130 contract and $600 outright prices. We have a hunch Telus wouldn't want to be the exception to the rule.

Strategy Analytics: Android Captures Record 41 Percent Share of Global Tablet Shipments in Q3 2012

Apple iOS slipped to 57 percent global market share, allowing Android to capture a record 41 percent share.

Strategy Analytics claims Android reached 41 percent of tablets in Q3, iPad may have felt the heat

[![Strategy Analytics claims Android is up to 41 percent of tablets in Q3, iPad may feel the heat](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/strategy-analytics-q3-2012-tablet-market-share.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/strategy-analytics-claims-android-reached-41-percent-of-tablets/)

Three months can make all the difference, at least if you're drafting estimates at [Strategy Analytics](http://www.engadget.com/tag/StrategyAnalytics/). Now that we know [14 million iPads](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/apple-q4-2012-earnings-35-97-billion-in-revenue-8-67-eps/) shipped in the third quarter, the analyst group believes that Apple's tablet market share dropped from [68.3 percent](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/25/strategy-analytics-ipad-keeps-riding-high-in-q2-tablet-market/) in the spring to 56.7 percent in the summer. All of the shift is attributed to Android -- researchers think that shipments of Google-based tablets surged from 7.3 million to 10.2 million, handing the platform 41 percent of an increasingly crowded space. It's the "collective weight" of so many Android-reliant companies leaping into the market rather than any one of them pulling ahead, Strategy Analytics says. We wouldn't be shocked if a few [Kindle Fire HD](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-review-7-inch/) sales played a part.

More than a few wildcards still surround the figures and their long-term impact. First is that these are estimates, not concrete results: companies like Amazon steadfastly [refuse to provide](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/amazon-announces-q3-2012-earnings-13-18-billion-revenue/) shipment numbers and leave most of the final tally beyond Apple to educated guesswork. It's also an understatement to say that the market will change dramatically before 2012 is over. Between [Windows 8](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/microsoft-surface-rt-review/)'s launch, possible [Nexus 7 upgrades](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/nexus-7-with-north-american-3g-passes-through-the-fcc/) and [two](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/apple-4th%20generation-ipad/) [new iPads](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/apple-ipad-mini-hands-on-video/), there are a lot of pieces moving on the chessboard.

Gunkerty Jeb writes "The death knell for SSL is getting louder. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and Stanford University have discovered that poorly designed APIs used in SSL implementations are to blame for vulnerabilities in many critical non-browser software packages. Serious security vulnerabilities were found in programs such as Amazon's EC2 Java library, Amazon's and PayPal's merchant SDKs, Trillian and AIM instant messaging software, popular integrated shopping cart software packages, Chase mobile banking software, and several Android applications and libraries. SSL connections from these programs and many others are vulnerable to a man in the middle attack."

Android Will Surpass Windows By 2016, Say Gartner Stats

An anonymous reader writes "Google's Android operating system will be used on more computing devices than Microsoft's Windows within four years, data from research firm Gartner showed on Wednesday, underlining the massive shift in the technology sector. At the end of 2016, there will be 2.3 billion computers, tablets and smartphones using Android software, compared with 2.28 billion Windows devices, Gartner data showed." The comparison would make less sense if Android was strictly for phones, and Windows was strictly for desktops-with-keyboards, but gets interesting as the devices on which each system runs overlap ever more.

Nexus 7 with North American 3G passes through the FCC, might spoil the surprise

[![Nexus 7 with North American 3G passes through the FCC, might spoil the surprise](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/nexus-7-3g-me370tg-fcc-1351182266.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/nexus-7-with-north-american-3g-passes-through-the-fcc/)

At this rate, there might not be much new to show in [Google's playground](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/17/google-android-nexus-event-october-29th/). ASUS has passed a ME370TG tablet through the FCC's approval process -- which sounds ordinary, until you remember that the current [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) is the ME370T. The G, from all appearances, refers to 3G: there's an Intel XMM 6260 chipset inside supplying HSPA that would work for all North American GSM carriers, and most likely beyond. We don't know whether any of the [rumored capacity changes](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/32gb-nexus-7-249-oct-29th-leak/) will carry over, or even if this tablet will necessarily surface at Google's October 29th event, but the filing and recent [out-of-stock notices](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/nexus-7-8gb-not-available/) suggest more than ever that the reference Android tablet is near a significant makeover.
