Editorial: Amazon and Google are undermining mobile pricing, and that may hurt everyone

When Google unveiled the [Nexus 4](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-4-review/), [Nexus 10](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-10-review/) and a [refreshed Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/nexus-7s-new-pricing-is-official-16gb-for-199-32gb-for-249/) in October, the moment was arguably the crescendo of a change in the Android ecosystem that had been building ever since Amazon's [Kindle Fire](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/14/amazon-kindle-fire-review/) first braved the marketplace in 2011. Along with a widely expanded Amazon lineup that includes multiple [Kindle Fire HD](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-review-7-inch/) models and a price-cut tweak to the original Fire, two of the largest players in the mobile world now have top-to-bottom device businesses built around selling at break-even prices and recouping their money through content. That might sound good on the surface, but it's a bad omen for competitors that genuinely can't respond in kind -- and it could erode some of the values of diversity and innovation that we're supposed to hold dear as technology fans.

Nokia Lumia 920 review: Windows Phone 8 and (a little bit of) camera magic

[![Nokia Lumia 920 review](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/lumia920dsc06688mat600.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nokia-lumia-920-review/)

### More Info

* [Nokia Lumia 920 official: Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU, 8MP PureView camera](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/nokia-lumia-920-official-dual-core-1-5ghz-snapdragon-s4-cpu-wi/)

* [Windows Phone 8 review](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review/)

It's been almost a year to the day since we reviewed Nokia's first Windows Phone and now we're staring at its second-generation flagship, the [Lumia 920](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/nokia-lumia-920-hands-on/). Since the [Lumia 800](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/nokia-lumia-800-review/), Nokia's taken a pretty big role in improving Windows Phone's standing in a crowded (but lucrative) smartphone battlefield. While it may be sharing the the spotlight with the new [HTC 8X](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/htc-8x-review-windows-phone-8s-compact-flagship/), this slab of hewn polycarbonate has garnered plenty of admirers. No doubt, a large chunk of those would-be phone buyers are, for better and [worse](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/lumia-920-pureview-video-filmed-with-different-camera/?share=google-plus-1), lusting after the phone's PureView imaging tech -- and after our our [early](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/25/iphone-5-lumia-920-image-stabilization-face-off/) [tests](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/lumia-920-low-light-shootout/), it looks like it could be just as impressive as the lossless optical zoom seen on the [PureView 808](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/26/nokia-808-pureview-review/).

The Lumia 920 dominated Nokia's presentation at Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 press event a few months ago, with the smaller [Lumia 820](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/nokia-lumia-820-hands-on/) barely getting a look-in. It's got a "better-than-HD" 1,280 x 768, 4.5-inch high-contrast IPS display, built-in contactless charging, solid build quality and more of Nokia's exclusive software additions. This time, at least on hardware specifications, the company aims to put its flagship on equal footing with the likes of the [Galaxy S III](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/) and the [iPhone 5](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/). Can Nokia's biggest and (literally) brightest smartphone maintain its place at top of the Windows Phone pile? How does that camera fare with extended use? And will the Lumia 920 offer enough to pull you away from Android or iOS for your next phone?

Android 'smishing' vulnerability discovered by NCSU researchers; Google has a fix incoming

The art of smishing (SMS-Phishing) has been practiced for [some time](http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/18/mcafee-virus-scan-hits-windows-mobile-5-0/), but a discovery by the wizards at [NC State University](http://www.engadget.com/all/ncstate) has uncovered a new vulnerability that could bring the aforesaid act back into the spotlight. Xuxian Jiang's research team recently identified the hole and confirmed that it impacts Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. Put simply, if an Android user downloads an infected app, the attacking program can "make it appear that the user has received an SMS, or text, message from someone on the phone's contact list or from trusted banks." This fake message can solicit personal information, such as passwords for user accounts. The team isn't going to disclose proof until Google patches it up, but the school has said that Google will be addressing it "in a future Android release." For now, however, Jiang recommends additional caution when downloading and installing apps from unknown sources, while also suggesting that folks pay close attention to received SMS text messages.

ComScore: US smartphone share leveled off in September, Android and iPhone continued their reigns

[![ComScore shows US smartphone share leveling off, Android and iPhone continue their reigns](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/comscore-oct-2012-1.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/comscore-us-smartphone-share-leveled-off-in-september/)

We're so used to constant flux in smartphone market share that it's a surprise when things _don't_ move. Yet that's what we're facing today. [ComScore](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ComScore/) found that the US smartphone field in September was virtually unchanged from where it was in August, even down to smaller players like Symbian and Windows Phone. Accordingly, Android still ruled the roost at 52.5 percent, while 34.3 percent were iPhone adopters. It's difficult to say whether or not the [iPhone 5](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/) had a tangible impact -- while Apple had [banner sales](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/24/iphone-5-sales-hit-five-million-in-first-weekend/) in the last several days of September, we don't know to what extent that was offset by people holding off from buying an iPhone 4S.

Overall cellphone sales showed some of that more reassuring give and take. The positions remained the same, but the US was once again a painful market to be in for anyone that isn't Apple or Samsung. Apple crept up to within a stone's throw of toppling LG at 17.5 percent to its rival's 17.7, while Samsung's successful shift to smartphones helped it keep exactly 26 percent of the mobile sphere. We're most curious to see how October shakes out: between a full month of iPhone 5 sales and the [Droid RAZR HD](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/droid-razr-hd-and-razr-maxx-hd-review/), we may learn that the calmness of September was just a momentary illusion.

Rogers and CIBC kick off Canadian NFC-based mobile payments with mini event (update: full details)

[![BlackBerry Bold 9900 Rogers mobile payment with CIBC](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/cibc-mobile-payment-blackberry-bold-9900.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/rogers-and-cibc-kick-off-canadian-nfc-based-mobile-payments-today/)

Rogers and its banking partner CIBC have been making much ado over bringing NFC mobile payments to Canada [since the spring](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/17/rogers-and-cibc-make-blackberry-mobile-payments-deal/), but the companies have been mostly silent on actual availability and let a [rumored October 15th launch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/rogers-cibc-may-launch-suretap-nfc-based-payments-on-october-15/) date pass by without fanfare. The two partners are at last ready to swing into action, at least symbolically -- a photo-op at a Tim Hortons in Toronto on Friday will officially represent the first instance of their payment system being used in the wild. What we've seen officially and otherwise hasn't changed, which means that event star and triathlete Simon Whitfield will be using one of two NFC-equipped BlackBerry phones with a special SIM card while he buys a meal that we imagine involves coffee and maple-glazed donuts. Rogers hasn't said how soon the less sporty among us will be making payments, although the limited choices of phones (two) and carriers (one) will only give a handful of Canucks a chance to join in.

**Update:** Just as Whitfield's coffee is cooling off, Rogers has given out full details: the CIBC mobile payment option will roll out later in the month to at least 2,300 Tim Hortons restaurants across Canada, with 3,000 more joining in by December. It's called Suretap, as the earlier leak confirmed, and there's no surprise support for Android, Windows Phone or other platforms.

[![Google Nexus 4 review](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/dsc02703-1351832470.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-4-review/)

Movie sequels often don't live up to the hype of the [original blockbuster](http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/13/the-ultimate-matrix-collection-on-blu-ray-review-roundup/), but the same isn't always true of smartphones -- on the contrary, they typically get even better. The Nexus lineup, initially thought of as a "playground" for Android developers to test their apps on, has continually gotten better at its craft (and popularity). Not only that, it's picking up momentum: in less than five months, Google has crafted two [Nexus](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) [tablets](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/nexus-10-hands-on-video/) as well as its latest and greatest smartphone known as the [Nexus 4](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/nexus-4-official/), and the attractively priced devices are now facing more interest than they ever have before.

The Nexus 4 is a veritable dreamboat when it comes to looks and specs. It's a smooth, elegant-looking device that comes with a large, 4.7-inch, HD display, a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and plenty of other appealing components. It exhibits a lot of commonalities to LG's current flagship, the [Optimus G](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/lg-optimus-g-review-a-quad-core-powerhouse-with-nexus-aspiratio/). And for a starting price of $299 unlocked, it's sure to attract a whole new demographic that until recently had never even heard of a Nexus. But is this a flagship smartphone that everyone will want to buy, or should the fourth-generation offering just be another target of developers' envy? Stay tuned past the break to find out.

Google explains how its Android 4.2 malware scanner guards the side door

[![Android's new malware scanner](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/android42-security.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/android-malware-scanner/)

Sideloading apps on Android implies a whole set of [security holes](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/06/mcafee-shows-how-major-android-scamware-ticks/), but the [new malware scanner](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/google-play-store-update/) included in [Android 4.2](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/google-bumps-android-to-4-2-keeps-jelly-bean-moniker/) could provide a much-needed plug. Talking to _Computerworld, _Android VP of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer revealed that Google's been analyzing APKs that crop up online, regardless of whether they're official market apps or not, in order to maintain a growing database of good and bad code. The scanner -- shown above -- then works in a similar way to the [Bouncer on the front gate](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/02/googles-bouncer-service-scans-the-android-market-for-malware/), comparing all the apps on your phone to that database. The new sentry helps Google build upon other Android 4.2 security features such as an improved app permission screen and a block against apps sending premium SMS messages in the background. On the other hand, some might say that collecting samples of existing malware will never be as powerful as truly [understanding its DNA](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/22/android-malware-genome-proje/).

Nexus 10 review

![DNP Nexus 10 review](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/nexus10-2012-11-01-600-1.jpg)

When Google unleashed the [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) upon us earlier this summer we were caught completely off-guard. A $200 tablet that was _legitimately good_ in every regard? It was unheard of at the time, and even five months later it's still a really nice slate. Now it has a big brother, the Nexus 10, this time coming courtesy of Samsung. At $399 it arrives with less fanfare and a higher price, but it also comes with a very distinctive selling point: a stratospherically high resolution.

This 10.1-inch panel has an eye-watering 2,560 x 1,600 resolution -- the very same as the [13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/apple-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review-13-inch/) but in a much smaller package. Is Google's second reference tablet the ultimate Android 10-incher at a bargain price, or is it simply another big tablet with a lot of pixels? Your answer awaits after the break.

More Than 25% of Android Apps Know Too Much About You

CowboyRobot writes "A pair of reports by Juniper and Bit9 confirm the suspicion that many apps are spying on users. '26 percent of Android apps in Google Play can access personal data, such as contacts and email, and 42 percent, GPS location data... 31 percent of the apps access phone calls or phone numbers, and 9 percent employ permissions that could cost the user money, such as incurring premium SMS text message charges... nearly 7 percent of free apps can access address books, 2.6 percent, can send text messages without the user knowing, 6.4 percent can make calls, and 5.5 percent have access to the device's camera.' The main issue seems to be with poor development practices. Only in a minority of cases is there malicious intent. The Juniper report and the Bit9 report are both available online."

Sony Xperia TL review: the company's second US flagship is much improved, but still imperfect

[![Sony Xperia TL review the company's second US flagship is muchimproved, but not quite perfect](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/dsc04472-enhanced-copy.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/sony-xperia-tl-review-android/)

As [Sony's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony/) second stab at the US mobile market, [the Xperia TL](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Xperia+TL/) arrives with a major corporate synergistic push: a _007_ movie franchise tie-in. But an awkward distinction as [the official Bond phone](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/01/sony-xperia-tl-att-4g-lte-james-bond/) and a smattering of pre-loaded "Skyfall" multimedia content alone won't drive consumer adoption; the specs and pricing will. Following in the footsteps of the company's first stateside flagship, the [Ion](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/24/sony-xperia-ion-review/), this [AT&T 4G LTE exclusive](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/sony-xperia-tl-att-november-2nd-release-date-99/) is priced aggressively at $99 on two-year contract, packing a 4.6-inch HD Reality display (1,280 x 720) powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz, 16GB of storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD), 1GB RAM, NFC, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an integrated 1,850mAh battery.

With Ice Cream Sandwich running the show and a planned upgrade to Jelly Bean in the works, it has all the makings of a current-gen high-end offering. So will the Xperia TL help Sony build much-needed buzz for its [mobile division](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/sony-cuts-q2-2012-losses-by-a-third-to-198-million/) here in the states? Can a sub-$100 price tag effectively lure consumers away from the bigger, faster and flashier Android phones AT&T has to offer? Or is this mainly one for Sony loyalists? Find out after the break as we put the TL through its paces.

When we got a look at the new [Nexus 10](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/nexus-10-hands-on-video/) running [Android 4.2](http://www.engadget.com/tag/android4.2/) Jelly Bean, we expected Google's Music Explorer feature would slot into the Play store alongside the OS update. As it turns out, the feature has been quietly implemented, so you can now check out similar artists from within another's catalogue. We had a fiddle with it, but weren't particularly impressed -- you can only see three similar artists in the bubble-like UI at any one time, with no explanation of why they are linked together, or how the recommendations are decided. Some people will probably appreciate the casual browsing experience, but we found it a little too uninformative. Of course, you can make up your own mind by grabbing your tab and heading for the Play store. Just don't be surprised if the whole experience ends up bursting your bubble.

Hexxeh ports Chromium OS to the Nexus 7 simply because he can (video)

Coder extraordinaire [Hexxeh](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Hexxeh/) earned much of his reputation from porting [Chromium OS](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ChromiumOS/) to just about everything, some of his targets [more audacious](http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/chromium-os-infiltrates-ipad-makes-itself-comfortable/) than others. It's about time he come full circle and port a Google platform to another Google platform, and he just recently did that with a very early Chromium OS conversion for the normally Android-based [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/). Details are scarce other than that WiFi and touch input are working, although that's really all that's needed for something so web-centric, isn't it? We'll cut Hexxeh some slack when he says he's in no rush to produce a more easily installed build for Jane and Joe Modder -- when he mentions spending hours hacking the OS into the tablet _just for fun_, he probably deserves some leeway.

[Thanks, yo2boy]

Android devices already counted for a [lion's share](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/08/idc-android-and-ios-continue-to-carve-up-the-world-another-rec/) of phones shipped during Q2, and now fresh [IDC](http://www.engadget.com/tag/IDC/) figures show Google's OS claiming the top spot with a hefty 75 percent marketshare in the third quarter. In total, 136 million Android handsets were shipped during the time frame, a new record in a single quarter. Even with the help of [new hardware](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/), iOS lagged behind in second place with a 14.9 percent stake of handsets. Both Blackberry and Symbian clung to their respective 3rd and 4th place spots, making up 6.6 percent of total shipments. Windows-based phones (both WP7 and Windows Mobile) fell to 2 percent, keeping Microsoft in fifth place just above smartphones running Linux. However, with [Windows Phone 8](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review/) devices making their debut, we wouldn't be surprised to see Redmond's numbers get a boost when IDC's next report rolls around.

Google Wallet update purportedly leaks plans for a real-world card, transfers and transit passes

[![Google Wallet update purportedly leaks plans for a realworld card, transit passes and transfers](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/google-wallet-card-leak.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/google-wallet-update-purportedly-leaks-plans-for-real-world-card/)

Google Wallet [hasn't had much uptake](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/26/google-wallet-one-year-later/) in the real world. When most of its use has revolved around one carrier, few payment points and even fewer phones, most of us have had to sit on the sidelines. If an _Android Police_ source really did come across a leaked future build of Google Wallet as he claims, though, we may know how Google surmounts that problem: going old school with a real-world card. Screenshots in the app supposedly show a mail-in option for plastic that could completely replace credit and debit cards without turning to [NFC](http://www.engadget.com/tag/NFC/). Any charges after a typical swipe of the magnetic strip would simply go to whatever payment source is set as Wallet's default, letting minimalists slim down their actual wallets while sharing in the same discounts as their phone-wielding counterparts. Digital-only purists would still get something out of the deal, as the update could also bring person-to-person money transfers and support for [mass transit](http://www.engadget.com/tag/masstransit/) cards. How soon the as yet unconfirmed app would appear is still a mystery, but it dovetails with Google [teasing a Wallet revamp](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/22/google-wallet-update-coming-soon-to-bring-support-for-more-ha/) that's rumored to take mobile use beyond its Android-only roots; we just didn't anticipate that the company might bypass our phones altogether.

Amazon brings Cloud Drive Photos app to Android, keeps your shots safe

[![Amazon brings Cloud Drive Photos app to Android, keeps your shots safe](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/amazondrivean-1351784767.jpeg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/amazon-cloud-drive-photos-android-app/)

Looks like releasing its [first in-house-built](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/amazon-game-studios-releases-its-first-mobile-game-air-patriots/) mobile game for Android (and other platforms) wasn't quite enough for the online retail giant. [Amazon](http://www.engadget.com/tag/amazon/) announced earlier that its Cloud Drive Photos application is now available on Android for both handset and tablets, giving users of Google's OS a cloud-based hub to use for uploading, saving, sharing and viewing pictures -- of course this also includes the retailer's kind handout of 5G of free storage, though folks could easily upgrade to 20GB for a $10 per-year fee. The Cloud Drive Photos app is up for download now, so hit that Google Play link below if you're looking for [yet another place](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/dropbox-android-preview-jelly-bean-nexus-7/) to keep all those awesome shots you snap with your device.

Google Now slips in a pedometer, reminds us we need to get out more

[![Google Now slips in a pedometer, reminds us we need to get out more](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/google-now-pedometer-1351786598.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/google-now-slips-in-a-pedometer-card/)

Anyone who checks [Google Now](http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoogleNow/) compulsively on a [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/)-equipped Android phone might have noticed a surprise appear while they were checking for directions home from that big Halloween bash. An unannounced [pedometer](http://www.engadget.com/tag/pedometer/) card has surfaced that shows just how many miles we (or our phones) have been biking or walking in a given month, with the intent clearly to spur couch dwellers into action. The discovery at _Droid-Life_ reveals that Google has been using the GPS information it already had to catalog our athletic progress since at least September -- a bit creepy, but not shocking when the positioning is already needed for directions. As for the mileage figure you see above? It's not this writer's only phone, so that distance is much lower than it should be. Really. Honest.

US Cellular intros Motorola Electrify M, gets a slice of the Droid RAZR M on November 8th for $100

[![US Cellular intros Motorola Electrify M, gets a slice of the Droid RAZR M on November 8th for $100 ](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/motorola-electrify-m.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/us-cellular-intros-motorola-electrify-m/)

Americans who were eying Motorola's [Droid RAZR M](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/motorola-droid-razr-m-review-a-very-good-ics-handset-in-a-small/) and just weren't keen on Verizon's typically overt branding now have at least one alternative. [US Cellular](http://www.engadget.com/tag/USCellular/) is giving the big-screened, small-sized smartphone a slight respin as the Electrify M, with a subtler (if less Kevlar-laden) design wrapping around the same 4.3-inch screen, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 and LTE that we've come to know. The carrier applies a light touch to the Android 4.0 build as well. Those who want to take advantage of US Cellular's [giant LTE expansion](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/31/us-cellular-lte-30-markets-on-november-5th/) this month won't have to wait long between the widened coverage and a new device to use with it: the Electrify M goes on sale online as of November 8th, and retail a day later, at the same $100 post-discount price as its Verizon counterpart.
