Ask Engadget: best universal remote?

[![Ask Engadget best universal remote](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/askengadgetlogo09-1353057438.png) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/17/ae-universal-remote/)

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's [Ask Engadget](http://ask.engadget.com/) inquiry is from Marc and Jack, who are going ocean-mad with all of their remote controls. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at **_ask [at] engadget [dawt] com. _**

Marc wrote

> "My home theater currently has seven remote controls, which I'd like to narrow down. I know there are solutions available which are massively arcane, but is there something simple that the crowd can recommend?"

Jack wrote

> "Can you recommend a universal remote control that works with a PS3 and Apple TV that doesn't suck?"

Well friends,

* Gear 4's [Unity remote](http://www.gear4.com/product/_/29/unityremote/?cid=209) has earned rave reviews thanks to its ease of use and near universal application (except for the PS3)
* While [Griffin's Beacon](http://www.griffintechnology.com/beacon) offers the same capability, but also works with Android devices
* If you're serious about including the PS3 in your setup, you could splash out on [Logitech's Harmony](http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/19/logitech-harmony-adapter-for-the-playstation-3-review/) IR-to-Bluetooth adapter.

But perhaps, out there, is something even better. That's where you, the Engadget Faithful come in. Why not share your experience (or your product) in the comments below?

Laser Projected Keyboard

Mobile gadgets, from phones to computers, seem to keep shrinking in size. It's gotten to the point that I almost feel silly pulling out my completely normal-sized laptop at the coffee shop.

Google Play Store update on Android brings post-install suggestions, translations

[![Google Play Store update on Android brings postinstall suggestions, translations](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/google-play-store-post-install-ui-1353188659.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/17/google-play-store-update-on-android-brings-post-install-suggestions/)

Google likes to stealthily roll out [Google Play Store](http://www.engadget.com/tag/GooglePlayStore/) updates for Android users on a frequent basis, whether it's to add new sections or to encourage a little more [impulse shopping](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/google-play-store-update-wishlists/). We'd put a brand new revision in that last camp. The 3.10.9 tweak no longer just leaves us lingering at an app's page during an installation: start the process and the store offers suggestions based on fellow adopters' habits as well as a shortcut back to the main portal. Language mismatches in the store could also be a thing of the past with an option to translate descriptions into the device owner's native tongue. Along with a quicker way to add [Google+](http://www.engadget.com/tag/GooglePlus/) friends and get better app recommendations, Google's refresh is clearly built to remove those last points of hesitation before trying something new; if the app drawer is looking a little bare, hit the source link (or wait for an automatic update) to fill up.

Green Throttle Games Atlas and Arena hands-on (video)

Amid Nintendo's [latest piece of kit](http://www.engadget.com/tag/wiiu) and the buzz for the next generation of home consoles, a quiet voice is whispering in the consumer's ear: Android, it says. Between dual-analog [gamepads](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/powera-moga-release-price/), [crowd funded hardware](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ouya/) and hardcore [gaming tablets](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/wikipad-hands-on/), Google's mobile OS is gaining ground among gamers. It certainly has Guitar Hero co-creator Charles Huang's attention -- he's teamed up with Matt Crowley and Karl Townsend (who both had a hand in building various [Palm](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Palm/) devices) to create [Green Throttle Games](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/06/green-throttle-games/), an outfit that joins the ever-growing legion of firms out to convert your Android device into a full fledged gaming console. How's it work? We dropped by their Santa Clara offices to find out.

Microsoft announces SkyDrive SDKs for .NET and Windows Phone 8, highlights web integration

[![DNP SkyDrive announces NET and Windows Phone SDKs, integrates IFTTT, Docusign and Soundgecko ](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/different-options-for-triggering-actions-on-ifttt781ccd8c.png) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/17/skydrive-sdk-net-windows-phone-8/)

After the introduction of [new APIs](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/12/skydrive-and-windows-phone-cozy-up-apps-can-now-directly-integr/) last year, Microsoft has released [SkyDrive](http://engadget.com/tag/skydrive) SDKs for almost every major platform including Windows 8, JavaScript Web library, Android and iOS. Now the cloud service has opened its doors to more of Microsoft's own with new SDKs for .NET and of course, [Windows Phone 8](http://engadget.com/tag/windowsphone8). To entice even more developers to its side, the team at SkyDrive also integrated with services like IFTTT (If This Then That), which lets you customize action triggers between different web services, DocuSign, an electronic signature site and SoundGecko, a text-to-audio transcription service. It'll likely take a lot of work for SkyDrive to win over fans of Dropbox and Box.net, but opening up its doors to developers is a step in the right direction.

Lenovo's upcoming five-inch 1080p phone to feature dual-SIM connectivity

[![DNP Lenovo also working on a 1080p smartphone in the 5inch area](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/lenovo-1080p-phone-1353132389.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/17/lenovo-1080p-5-inch-phone/)

By now you should already know that [HTC](http://www.engadget.com/tag/droiddna), [Sharp](http://www.engadget.com/tag/sh930w/) and [Oppo](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Find5/) share a common theme: 1080p display on their five-inch phones. As it turns out, Lenovo also wants in on the VIP list. Spotted on Sina Weibo earlier this week (but have since been deleted) are the above three screenshots showing off Lenovo's customized Android UI in 1080p glory. As with many phones in China these days, the device in question supports dual-SIM connectivity -- the screenshots indicate that it's connected to China Telecom's CDMA2000 network and China Mobile's 2G network simultaneously.

Our own source wouldn't directly confirm that it's a five-inch display on this mysterious phone, but we were told that it'll be somewhere between 4.5 inches and 5.5 inches -- we'll take that as a yes, especially since the only 1080p mobile panels available right now are the five-inch, 440ppi ones from Sharp and JDI. Our source also said the phone's entered DVT (Design Verification Test) phase for some time, so it might not be long before we hear an official announcement in China. As always, stay tuned.

HTC Droid DNA review

[![HTC Droid DNA review](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/dsc02849-1353052941.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/htc-droid-dna-review/)

Guanine, adenine, thymine, cytosine... Android? The Droid DNA -- the latest addition to Verizon's Droid series -- may not contain any actual nucleotides (that we know of), but that doesn't make this HTC-made superphone any less of a powerhouse. On the contrary, we've been eyeballing this handset with eager anticipation ever since it first launched in Japan as the [J Butterfly](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/17/htc-j-butterfly-htl21-440ppi/); much like its counterpart from the Land of the Rising Sun, the DNA boasts a jaw-dropping 5-inch, [1080p display](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/05/lg-displays-new-five-inch-1080p-smartphone-display/). But while that may be the headliner-worthy feature, you certainly can't go wrong with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM taking charge behind the scenes, along with an [ImageSense](http://www.engadget.com/tag/imagesense) camera and other top-notch specs.

In certain respects, the Droid DNA is a sneak preview of what's to come in 2013: a wave of high-performance "superphones" that take advantage of this improved resolution, and offer a long list of other top-notch features. Indeed, that's a future we could all definitely live with, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves; we've got a phone to review, after all. Is the display as tantalizing as it sounds? Will its size be a selling point or a major distraction? Should you waltz into a Verizon store on Black Friday and demand they take your hard-earned $200? Follow us after the break as we focus on the here and now.

LG F240 possibly spied in benchmarks packing 1080p screen, Snapdragon S4 Pro

[![LG F240 possibly spied in benchmarks packing 1080p screen, Snapdragon S4 Po](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/lg-f240-benchmark-leak.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/lg-f240-possibly-spied-in-benchmarks-packing-1080p-screen/)

LG's [Optimus G](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/lg-optimus-g-review-a-quad-core-powerhouse-with-nexus-aspiratio/) (and [Nexus 4](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-4-review/)) might have been the resolution champion among non-[phablet](http://www.engadget.com/tag/phablet/) Android phones for only a brief moment before the [HTC Droid DNA](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/13/htc-droid-dna-hands-on/) arrived, but there's clues surfacing that LG may fight its way back to a draw. Following hints through browser profiles, a set of results on GLBenchmark have appeared for an unconfirmed LG F240 wielding a 1080p screen resolution; given the allusions to Korean phone carriers like [KT](http://www.engadget.com/tag/KT/) and LG's earlier decision to [back away from tablets](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/19/lg-backing-off-tablets-focus-on-cellphones/), we suspect that it's something pocketable. The F240 could otherwise be more of an evolution, if it's real -- the Adreno 320 graphics and 1.5GHz clock speed allude to the Optimus G's [Snapdragon S4 Pro](http://www.engadget.com/tag/SnapdragonS4Pro/) sticking around, and the biggest leap beyond the screen could be an upgrade to [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/) (4.1, not 4.2). While benchmarks aren't entirely trustworthy without a tangible device to match, there's enough here to imply that HTC will have at least one major competitor in a very young category.

Insert Coin: XensrCase turns your iPhone into a state of the art 3D sports tracker

_In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line._

![Insert Coin XensrCase turns your iPhone into a state of the art 3D sports tracker](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/4dc25d56cdd321e62d5bd45a300fd11alarge.jpg)

A lot of us use our phones to track our [runs](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/21/nike-running-comes-to-android/), [bike rides](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/06/wahoo-fitness-bluesc-bike-sensor-ships-for-iphone/) and other [outdoor](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/26/columbias-gps-pal-app-download-android-ios-hike-trek-geotagging-logger/) activities. You've probably also noticed that GPS is not exactly the most accurate way of measuring your exercise (especially if you live in a city with a lot of tall, tightly-packed buildings). And, if your less concerned with distance and time than you are with say... elevation, then your iPhone simply can't help you. A company called EpicSesh is hoping to turn your humble iOS device into a serious 3D sport tracker by packing a bunch of sensors in a sleeve called the XensrCase. Inside the rugged case is a highly accurate gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer and separate GPS module that samples motion data 400 times a second to create smooth records of your jumps, flips and tricks, as well as your distance and speed. There's also a companion app that pulls in the most relevant data and formats it appropriately for your sport of choice -- be it snowboarding or windsurfing.

To get the product off the ground EpicSesh is looking for $100,000 in funding. To claim a XensrCase for yourself you'll need to pledge $150, though, that deal is only good for the first 100 devices. After they're gone you'll need to pony up $170 for one in blue. For now the case is available for the iPhone 5, 4S and 4 as well as the iPod touch. But we're hopeful an Android version of the same TruMotion tech is in the works. Head on after the break to see it in action and hit up the source link to pledge your support.

Sony to take aim at iPhone, Galaxy S3 in upcoming 'flagship' handset

Speaking to Financial Times Deutschland in an interview published yesterday, Sony Mobile sales and marketing head Dennis Van Schie said that his company is planning to announce "a flagship model that can [compete] with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S3." Van Schie wouldn't say what his company has planned for the device, but he did confirm ... (more)

Sphero's Augmented Reality Engine gets fully realized in Sharky the Beaver (video)

[![Sphero's Augmented Reality Engined gets fully realized in Sharky the Beaver](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/dsc04296.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/spheros-augmented-reality-engined-gets-fully-realized-in-sharky/)

Been keeping up to date with the quirky robotic ball named [Sphero](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/19/orbotix-sphero-review/)? We've been wondering when its Augmented Reality Engine would finalize into a full-fledged app since we [first witnessed it as E3](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/10/orbotix-sphero-augmented-reality-engine-3d-controller-hands-on/) as a simple 2D tech demo. Well, Today is the day that this Android and iOS-controlled ball makes it first official-release steps into the world of AR -- the engine has grown up, powering Orbotix's latest free app, _Sharky the Beaver_. While the game itself is still admittedly silly and demo-like since we saw an [early adaptation in August](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/28/sphero-firmware-upgrade-new-apps-augmented-reality/), there's no question that the AGR is now is a polished state.

As a refresher, unlike other implementations that require a stationary marker, Sphero serves as a one that can move around your area, while also relaying information about its position. The 3D character on screen rotates its directions as you spin Sphero, and, as you can see above, it even allows you to pick the ball up while it's being tracked. The frame-rate of tracking in the app itself looked very smooth, and we should the it does an admirable job keeping track of the ball, even if it ends up off-screen. At the point, gameplay is limited to flicking cupcakes on the ground that Sharky goes to automatically, and there's no word on if and when we'll see the features shown off in the early version (namely, the part where the Sharky part of the name was actually a key element, as you chased people on-screen to get their cupcakes). All in all, we're more curious than anything to see what else the folks at Orbotix will come up with in the realm of AR -- for more in the meantime, check out the our video hands-on after the break.

GM promises two new smartphone apps to help keep your EV charged

[![GM promises two new smartphone apps to help you charge your EV](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/spark-ev-waypoint.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/gm-promises-two-new-smartphone-apps-to-help-keep-your-ev-charged/)

GM has already released an [OnStar app](http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/17/gm-extends-onstar-smartphone-control-to-14-more-vehicles/) that extends smartphone control to a range of vehicles, but it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that it has bigger mobile plans than that. It's now announced two new apps designed for EV owners -- one that will let you help find EV chargers on your route, and another that will let you pay for the charge with your phone. The first of those is an update to OnStar's existing RemoteLink app (presumably for both iOS and Android), which will be getting a new Spark EV Waypoint tab that'll let you enter a destination and then have a route configured that ensures you won't be stuck miles from the nearest charging station. GM says it will be available in time for the launch of the 2014 [Spark EV](http://www.engadget.com/tag/sparkev). The second app, dubbed Park-Tap-Charge at the moment, is apparently still in the prototype stage, but GM promises that it will let you use your NFC-equipped smartphone to pay directly at the charging station, and also check information like the hourly rate of charging or the estimated time for a full charge before you pay. No word yet on when it will be available, though.

HTC Desire X review: one last hurrah for a former flagship?

[![HTC Desire X review One last hurrah for HTC's former flagship](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/jt2012-11-1412-11-16600.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/htc-desire-x-review/)

Before we go into more detail on [HTC's Desire X](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/htc-desire-x-hands-on/), cast your memory back to a time before the outfit announced the "One" line of Android phones. You may remember names such as [Wildfire](http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/28/htc-wildfire-review/), [Sensation](http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/27/htc-sensation-review/), [Rhyme](http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/htc-rhyme-review/) and, of course, Desire. Likewise, you may also remember a certain amount of company talk about its plans to [simplify its Android offerings](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/26/htcs-uk-ceo-wants-to-ease-off-the-new-product-gas-focus-on-am/), and turn out phones at a slower, more considered pace. So, it was a little confusing when we first heard about the Desire X. HTC already had an affordable phone, [the One V](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/13/htc-one-v-review/), but seemingly deemed it not affordable enough -- and [the Desire C](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/18/htc-desire-c-hands-on-video/) already fills the most entry-level position. With a 1GHz dual-core processor, a WVGA (800 x 480) display and a 5-megapixel camera, the specs are from the same era as the OG Desire, but with a slightly more current price: €299 in Europe. So, stripped of any "One" branding, but bearing a name that many will remember fondly, is the Desire X a good phone that's been reinvented, or just a throwback from HTC of old? We spent some time in its company to find out for ourselves.

Seagate Wireless Plus drive appears at the FCC teasing next-gen WiFi storage for Android, iOS

[Seagate](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Seagate/) has jumped into wireless mobile storage with both feet, launching the [GoFlex Satellite](http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/01/seagates-goflex-satellite-hdd-invites-android-users-to-its-medi/) (now just the Satellite) and even experimenting with an [LTE-equipped drive](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/seagate-crams-verizon-4g-lte-into-a-battery-powered-portable-hdd/) for dedicated road warriors. The FCC has just revealed that Seagate isn't having second thoughts about its strategy anytime soon: a previously unknown Wireless Plus drive has popped up at the US agency carrying 2.4GHz WiFi and a considerably slicker design. We don't know much more, although a handily provided copy of the quick start guide makes clear that the Wireless Plus is still centered on Android and iOS device owners wanting to stream media beyond what's on their internal memory. FCC clearance won't give any clues as to capacities or a ship date, but it suggests that it won't be long before our mobile devices have some added headroom.

Sony promises top-end handset to compete with GS III and iPhone, implies its existing flagship doesn't

Sony Mobile's sales chief, Dennis van Schie, has gone on the record with a pledge that just about crosses the line from marketing to manifesto. Speaking to the _Financial Times Deutschland_, he said Sony "will create, in the near future, a flagship model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III." Such a claim doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement of the manufacturer's existing top-end offering, the fast yet flawed [Xperia TL](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/sony-xperia-tl-review-android/), but it does raise our hopes for [CES](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ces2013), since _FTD _reports that the superphone in question will be presented in early 2013 at both the Las Vegas show and Mobile World Congress. On a related note, van Schie also promised that Sony's chaotic array of online storefronts would become better integrated by the end of 2013, with every user being able to use a single ID across all their devices to access content -- something that sounds simple, but evidently isn't.

Google's presence in the mobile market is strong, this much we know. What with the small matter of a hugely popular [mobile OS](http://www.engadget.com/tag/android), some [pretty popular hardware](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/13/psa-google-nexus-4-nexus-10-on-sale-in-us-now/), and fingers already in the [network-provider pie](http://www.engadget.com/tag/googlefiber). But what if there was just one more itch it needed to scratch, one big, wireless operator-shaped itch? Well, _The Wall Street Journal_ asserts (via its anonymous sources) that talks between the big G and the recently [spectrum-approved](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/3gpp-approves-dish-wireless-spectrum-standards/) operator Dish are already taking place. The same report is also quick to play down the advancement of these meetings, adding that Dish is currently talking with a number of companies at an "exploratory stage." Dish's Chairman, Charlie Ergen, was confirming nothing either, simply teasing that some of the potential partners are companies "who would like to be in the industry." Of course, Dish might just be playing it cool, and Google sniffing around prospective mobile compadres isn't surprising at all. We'd imagine "would like to be in the industry" has been a mantra for some time.

Sharp Aquos SH930W reviewed early in Russia, mates Sharp's 1080p screen with a mid-tier phone

[![Sharp Aquos SH930W reviewed early in Russia, mates Sharp's 1080p screen with a midtier phone](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/sharp-aquos-phone-sh930w-mobile-review.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/sharp-aquos-sh930w-reviewed-early-in-russia-with-1080p-display/)

Lest you think HTC has a complete lock on Sharp's supply of extra-dense [5-inch, 1080p](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/01/sharp-443-ppi-5-inch-smartphone-display-ceatec-2012/) screens for the [Droid DNA](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/13/htc-droid-dna-hands-on/) and [J Butterfly](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/17/htc-j-butterfly-htl21-440ppi/), Sharp itself is building a phone around the giant LCD. The Aquos Phone SH930W slightly rethinks the internals of HTC's new Android 4.1 flagship to make it more affordable, doubling the non-expandable storage to 32GB but scaling back to a dual-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 and dropping the currently unsupported LTE. That cost-cutting will be vital, as the SH930W is headed to a more price-sensitive Russia first, in late November -- one of the few (if not only) times that Sharp has tailored a smartphone to a country other than its native Japan. The 22,000-ruble ($694) off-contract price in Russia could undercut mere 720p rivals that often cost 25,000 rubles ($789) or more.

It's an odd phone by any account, and _Mobile-review_ was curious enough to snag a pre-release SH930W for an early inspection. While the device under the microscope was running vanilla Android rather than the planned [Feel UX](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/18/sharp-teams-up-with-design-company-for-new-feel-ux-android-skin/) and may easily have a fair share of buggy code, initial benchmarks seem to validate fears of a mismatch between the display and an underpowered chip: the S3 is fast enough for common tasks at that resolution, but chokes with playing 1080p video and certain 3D games. Anyone buying the extra-large Aquos Phone will mostly be choosing it for the good battery life, the camera and that killer price, the site says. We'll admit to being slightly disappointed at such a pedestrian fate for Sharp's screen so soon into its lifespan, although we suspect performance-minded Muscovites could get a chance at a much faster [HTC Deluxe](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/htc-deluxe-press-render-reportedly-leaks-spreads-droid-dna/) in the near future.

Twitter brings content preview cards to Android and iPhone, lets us email tweets from the web

[![Twitter brings content preview cards to Android and iPhone, lets us email tweets from the web](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/twitter-preview-cards-iphone-android.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/twitter-brings-content-preview-cards-to-android-and-iphone/)

Twitter has been on a mission to bring more of its [expanded tweet content](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/13/twitter-brings-expanded-news-tweets-to-the-web/) to the mobile world, and most recently [lavished attention](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/twitter-revamps-its-ipad-app-for-expanded-content/) on the iPad. It's carrying that campaign to a much wider mix of screens: an update to the Android and iPhone apps gives them article summary and photo preview cards whenever they either search for tweets or browse through the Discover tab, all without having to tap the post first. Photos in the reworked search have likewise moved to the top by default to help track down that elusive concert photo. Web users aren't being left out of Twitter's latest update frenzy, either. The social network is tucking an option into the "more" section of each tweet that lets us email a pristine-looking copy to anyone who isn't part of Twitter's flock. All of the features are available to try immediately in the relevant official clients, which should make life grand for those of us who want more than just a wall of text in our search results.

Google Targets Android Fragmentation With Updated Terms For SDK

SternisheFan writes "Google has expanded its legal agreement with developers working on Android applications to specifically prohibit them from taking any action that could lead to a fragmentation of the operating system. The prohibition was added to the terms and conditions for Google's Android SDK (software development kit), which developers must accept before using the software to build Android apps. The previous version of the terms of service, published in April 2009, didn't address the issue, but the new terms published on Tuesday include this new paragraph: 'You agree that you will not take any actions that may cause or result in the fragmentation of Android, including but not limited to distributing, participating in the creation of, or promoting in any way a software development kit derived from the SDK.' Google did not respond to several requests for comment. The issue of Android fragmentation has been gaining increased attention, but it's happened largely as a result of actions taken by Google and Android handset makers, not developers. It's a problem because it means that Android applications may not run properly across all Android devices. 'It continues to be a problem, both on smartphones and tablets,' said Avi Greengart, research director at Consumer Devices. 'Google has talked about multiple initiatives for dealing with it, but none of them have successfully addressed it.'"

Amazon adds Adobe's Photoshop Touch to Kindle Fire Appstore

[Kindle Fire](http://www.engadget.com/tag/kindle+fire/) owners with a penchant for on-the-go image editing will want to take note: [Adobe's Photoshop Touch](http://www.engadget.com/tag/adobe+photoshop+touch/) is now live on the [Appstore](http://www.engadget.com/tag/amazon%20appstore/). The app, already a mainstay on iOS and Android's respective markets, has been optimized for [Amazon's recent](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-kindle-fire-2012/) [tablet lineup](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-announces-kindle-fire-hd/), scaling up for both the 7- and [8.9-inch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazons-8-9-inch-kindle-fire-hd-impressions/) form factors and retailing for the same $9.99 price. Unfortunately, it won't work for owners of the [original Bezos-backed tab](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/14/amazon-kindle-fire-review/) since it still runs on the Gingerbread kernel. Sorry early adopters, but that's the price you pay for progress.
