FlipSide case for iPhone packs stealthy game controls, plays on solar power (video)

[![FlipSide case for iPhone packs stealthy game controls, plays on solar power video](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/flipside-case-2-1356236014.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/23/flipside-case-for-iphone-packs-stealthy-game-controls/)

The perpetual challenge of developing an [iPhone-friendly gamepad](http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone,gamepad/) (or any phone-oriented gamepad) is the bulk, either for a [gargantuan case](http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/25/icontrolpad-heads-into-production-support-for-other-phones-prom/) or else a [separate controller](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/13/icade-8-bitty-hands-on/). If Justice Frangipane's team and [iDevices](http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/14/igrill-meat-thermometer-for-iphone-is-the-expensive-unholy-marr/) have their way, that clunkiness will be a distant memory. Their proposed FlipSide case for iPhones (we see a prototype here) centers on Bluetooth 4.0 gamepad controls that stay clipped to the back when just checking email, but attach to the front for playtime. They'll save us from hunting down a wall outlet, too; the combination of a sensitive solar cell and a thin film battery from [Infinite Power Solutions](http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/25/thinergy-micro-battery-retains-charge-for-years-very-easy-to-mi/) should keep the case powered up through even indoor lighting. The only real challenge is getting the case produced, as Frangipane is looking for [crowdfunding](http://www.engadget.com/tag/crowdfunding/) to make the FlipSide a reality. Provided his group makes its donation target, though, there's the prospect of an Android version -- so those who don't play the iOS way could still reap the rewards if they chip in at the source link.

YouTube Player API for Android opens for all, brings seamless app integration (video)

[![YouTube Player API for Android opens for all, brings seamless app integration video](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/youtubeandroidapiht.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/22/youtube-player-api-for-android-opens-for-all/)

Adding a little dash of [YouTube](http://www.engadget.com/tag/youtube/) magic to your Android apps should be simple affair right? Well, historically, not entirely. That's all set to change though, now that the [long-promised](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/27/youtube-android-app-caching-channels-remote/) Android [YouTube Player API](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/06/google-slips-out-youtube-android-player-api/) has finally been set loose in the wild. This means developers can access some new tools that should bring the ubiquitous video service snuggly inside any app that wants to use it. This includes high-quality playback for devices running Android 2.2 and above, easier integration there-of due to a change in how to call the videos, full screen and orientation mode support, closed captions display, support for YouTube ads and the ability to program most elements of the playback experience natively within your app. The tools have already been put to use by some partners who got early access, including one of our favourite social feed-readers [Flipboard](http://www.engadget.com/tag/flipboard/). Full details and tools at the source, or slide past the break for Google developers video showing it in action.

Dropbox beta lets Android photographers share, organize photos in bulk

If you hadn't noticed, [Dropbox](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Dropbox/) is on a major [photography](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/14/dropbox-2-0-launches-for-ios-with-new-photos-tab-and-new-ui/) [kick](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/dropbox-continues-media-acquisition-binge-with-snapjoy/) lately, and it's not stopping just because the holidays are nearly in full swing. Its new Android beta helps users deal with their photos by the bushel, either sharing or scrapping multiple photos at once as well as organize them into photos. Anyone less than photographically inclined will still see a few interface tweaks that partly mirror the earlier iOS updates, as well as a new option to receive betas as soon as they're posted. There's inherent risks to using unfinished code, so take that into account before getting involved; it's still hard to resist when Dropbox has been handing out free storage to Android device buyers [like candy](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/50gb-free-dropbox-service-confirmed-for-samsung-galaxy-note-ii/).

Google adds localized screen shots and video to Play store

[![Google adds localized screen shots and video to Play store](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/12-21-2012localgraphics.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/22/google-adds-localized-screen-shots-and-video-to-play-store/)

Devs have been able to localize their apps and the text that accompanies them in the [Google Play](http://www.engadget.com/tag/googleplay) store for sometime. But until recently they've had to recycle the same images and video content regardless of country. That's finally changed, and developers can customize everything from the lead graphic to the icon and even swap in different [YouTube](http://www.engadget.com/tag/youtube) clips when localizing listings for one of Google's 49 supported languages. That means graphics can be customized for local holidays and video demos won't need to rely on YouTube's subtitles for translation. For more check out the source link.

Acer V350 reportedly spotted in benchmarks with Snapdragon S4, Jelly Bean

[![Acer V350 reportedly spotted in benchmarks with Snapdragon S4, Jelly Bean](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/acer-v350-benchmark-leak.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/22/acer-v350-reportedly-spotted-in-benchmarks-with-snapdragon-s4/)

Acer may be something of a leaky ship. Just days after we saw the [supposed V360](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/19/alleged-acer-first-jelly-bean-smartphone-v360/) smartphone pose for the camera, a possibly related V350 model has reportedly shown up in GLBenchmark's results. Despite the lower number in the naming scheme, the device put through testing looks to be the higher-end of the two. It jumps to a 720p screen, a speedier 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor and even a slightly newer Android 4.1.2 build of [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/). Without a peek at other details, we don't know what else if anything might be upgraded over the V360, or if this is indeed a real device -- benchmarks aren't definitive proof, after all. If history is an indicator, though, we could get full details of the V350 near Mobile World Congress in February, like with [past](http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/acer-iconia-smart-hands-on-video/) [devices](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/27/acer-cloudmobile-hands-on-at-mwc-2012/). We just hope Acer is timelier about [actually getting to market](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/10/acer-cloudmobile-review/) this time around.

Google's 'Happy Holidays from Android' gets you in the spirit with an unannounced Nexus 10 dock (video)

It's hardly the biggest reveal of the month, but Google's cheery "Happy Holidays from Android" video served to convey more than the search giant's heartfelt seasonal message -- it's also the launching ground for a [Nexus 10](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-10-review/) tablet dock. Spotted by _Android Central_, the curvy black stand, seen at the 0:59 and 1:16 marks, appears to be quite compact in size, and includes a raised back to support the high-res 10.1-inch slate. Sadly, there's no hint of connectivity options, and certainly no mention of a MSRP or ship date, so unless you happen to be one of the [Google employees](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/google-corporate-gift-poll/) involved in this jovial gesture, chances are you won't be making room for Mountain View's latest Android accessory before the year is out. But you can catch a glimpse of it in action after the break.

Archos 97 Titanium HD tablet combines Retina display prowess with an obtuse name

[![DNP Archos](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/archos-titanium.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/archos-97-titanium-hd-retina-display/)

Can a single company produce too many Android tablets? [Archos](http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos/) surely doesn't think so. Earlier today, the French electronics maker unveiled its awkwardly named 97 Titanium HD. Aside from a kooky moniker, the company's forthcoming slab features a 9.7-inch 2,048 x 1,536 IPS display, a 1.6GHz dual-core A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, microSD support (up to 64GB), a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Absent from today's big reveal were details about price and availability. While its [Retina-like display](http://www.engadget.com/tag/retinadisplay/) sounds promising, the device's other specs scream budget-friendly. In the meantime, we'll reserve our excitement until Archos tells us how much this thing actually costs.

Google reportedly poaches key Samsung marketing VP for Motorola

[![Google reportedly snags key Samsung marketing VP for Motorola](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/brian-wallace-samsung-or-google.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/google-reportedly-poaches-key-samsung-marketing-vp-from-motorola/)

Google may be doing more to boost Motorola's presence than whipping up a [new device strategy](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/motorola-x-phone-x-tablet-rumor-android-smartphone/), if rumors are true. _AllThingsD_ claims that Google has poached Samsung's American VP for strategic marketing, Brian Wallace, for a roughly equivalent role at Motorola. The move would not only give Motorola a high-profile executive who's had stints at companies like RIM, but one who's not afraid of taking the competition head-on: Samsung's TV ads poking fun at iPhone launch queues appeared under Wallace's tenure. We've asked Google, Motorola and Samsung whether or not the shift is real; Motorola won't comment in either direction, and we haven't heard from the remaining two. If there's any truth to the story, Motorola might have a stronger carrier-independent sales pitch than the occasional [dystopic TV spot](http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/06/motorolas-xoom-super-bowl-commercial-tips-hat-to-apples-1984/).

Nielsen 2012 recap puts Android and iOS on top

This week the folks at analyst group Nielsen have released their "Tops of 2012: Digital" list and have found Android and Apple's iOS battling it out for top US Smartphone operating system to the supreme surprise of no-one - it's the fact that BlackBerry still commands 7% of the market that's most striking.

Kantar: iPhone 5 boosts Apple's US smartphone share to 53.3 percent, Android still tops in Europe

[![iPhone 5 side view](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-2012-09-14-600-21.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/kantar-iphone-5-boosts-apples-us-smartphone-share-to-53-percent/)

Stop us if you've heard this one before: the launch of a flagship, brand-defining smartphone gives its creator a swift leap in market share immediately afterwards. There's no surprise that the [iPhone 5](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/) will have improved Apple's standing in the US, then, but [Kantar](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kantar/) Worldpanel's market share study suggests that the lift was more than some expected. The firm estimates that Apple climbed to 53.3 percent of American smartphone share in the three months leading up to late November. The figure is both Apple's highest ever for the country as well as its first venture past the 50 percent mark. Android in this climate held on to 41.9 percent of the market, hinting that many of those market-shifting iPhone sales came [ after October](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/30/comscore-android-us-market-share-kept-growing-in-october/). Kantar expects a similar story this month, although it's not predicting how well the Cupertino crew will fare beyond that.

Lest anyone take the results out of context, Kantar points out that it's often a Google-friendly world. Android represents 61 percent of smartphone sales in the five largest European countries, while Apple's share in countries like Brazil and China is still small. There is an upside for Microsoft on this wider scale -- a year of Nokia [Lumia](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Lumia/) sales and the early results of the [Windows Phone 8 launch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/28/microsoft-selling-four-times-as-many-windows-phones-as-last-year/) have reportedly pushed Redmond's platform back up to 4.7 percent in those five European nations. We're a long way from going beyond a two-horse race in the smartphone field, but there's at least hints of change on the horizon.

Apple Kills a Kickstarter Project - Updated

Nerdfest writes "Venturebeat is reporting that a successfully funded Kickstarter project for a portable phone charger that works with both Apple and Android devices has been canceled because Apple wouldn't let the creators license its Lightning connector. Quoting: 'Edison Junior, the technology and design lab behind the POP portable power station, is returning the full $139,170 in funding it received from Kickstarter backers to develop the device. Unfortunately, Apple has refused to give the project permission to license the Lightning charger in a device that includes multiple charging options. ... "We didn't get a yes or a no up front," Siminoff said. "But as we kept going back and forth it was clear that it was getting harder. Then, when we saw that they weren't even going to allow a Lightning connector and a 30-pin connector together, we knew it was over." He also said that, while Apple is a private company and can do whatever it wishes, it should watch out. "When you do things that are bad for the customer I think it will be bad for them."''" Update: 12/21 22:16 GMT by S : Apple has relented. A spokesman for the company told Ars, "Our technical specifications provide clear guidelines for developing accessories and they are available to MFi licensees for free. We support accessories that integrate USB and Lightning connectors, but there were technical issues that prevented accessories from integrating 30-pin and Lightning connectors so our guidelines did not allow this. We have been working to resolve this and have updated our guidelines to allow accessories to integrate both 30-pin and Lightning connectors to support charging."

[![Motorola reportedly engineering 'X phone' to rival iPhone and Galaxy handsets](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/motorolaphone.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/motorola-x-phone-x-tablet-rumor-android-smartphone/)

Remember that era where the original RAZR elevated [Motorola](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Motorola/)'s name in the mobile realm to god-like status? Evidently, folks in that inner circle are angling for that to happen once more. A breaking report from _The Wall Street Journal_ has it on good authority that engineers at Moto are toiling on a so-called "X phone," which is obviously being built under the [stewardship of Google](http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/15/google-acquiring-motorola-mobility/). The goal? To produce a singular handset that can immediately rival the iPhone and Samsung's flagship Galaxy handsets.

It's unclear at the moment what exactly will make this guy such a marquee piece, but we are told that the effort is being headed up by former Google product manager Lior Ron. Reportedly, the company even went so far as to look into producing the phone with [a bendable display](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/19/samsung-display-teases-5-5-inch-flexible-720p-display-for-ces/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews) and a ceramic-based exterior, but it's unlikely that those dreams will pan out. Strangely, there's no mention of whether the phone will slot into Google's [Nexus](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nexus/) range -- phones that run [unadulterated](http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/09/editorial-androids-problem-isnt-fragmentation-its-contamina/) editions of Android -- but it's made clear that an X tablet will be following the phone. At some point [post-Apocalypse](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/gangnam-style-one-billion-views/), obviously.

Apple Kills a Kickstarter Project

"When you do things that are bad for the customer I think it will be bad for them."''"

Possible Asus ME172V tablet images leak out, give credence to earlier benchmark results

![Possible Asus ME172V images leak out, lend credence to earlier benchmark results](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/asusme172vleak-12-21-12-02-1356082477.jpg)

Sometimes, all a good rumor needs to bolster its street cred is a couple of [images](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/acer-eases-mystery-iconia-b1-a71-tab-past-fcc-glbenchmark-shows/), and thanks to _Notebook Italia_ and a Russian retailer, the 7-inch Asus ME172V has transformed from mere benchmark figures into a solid possibility. A site called _oro1.ru_ is showing the device up for pre-order at 6,990 rubles (about $225) for a 16GB version, complete with 16GB, 1,024 x 600 screen, Android 4.1 and 1GB RAM. We espied the device [earlier](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/02/asus-me172v-jelly-bean-tablet/) on GLBenchmark, which validates those specs while also showing a 1GHz CPU and Mali 400 GPU. _Notebook Italia_ also scoped a photo on Picasa from an apparent 7-inch Asus ME371MG tablet, which allegedly sports a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 chip, 1,280 x 800 IPS display, 1GB of RAM, 3G and 16GB of storage. Considering the slim evidence, that slate's more doubtful, though, and we can't vouch for the Russian vendor's credibility either -- so you may wanna cool your jets until there's official word from the Nexus 7 maker.

Hisense Pulse with Google TV priced at $100, now available from Amazon

[![](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/hisensedsc08571.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/hisense-pulse-google-tv-available-amazon/)

It's been a while since [we saw it at IFA](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/31/hisense-pulse-with-google-tv-hands-on/), but it looks like the Hisense Pulse with Google TV is finally available for purchase a month after [its promised release date](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/27/hisense-pulse-coming-in-november-for-99/). You can finally snag the Google TV set-top box from Amazon for $100 -- it misses that "under $99" mark mentioned in its initial announcement, but it's certainly close enough. The compact entertainment box supports 1080p output and has WiFi, HDMI, USB and Ethernet ports, letting you pump in content through a host of connections. Much like other [Google TV](http://engadget.com/tag/googletv) products, the remote that ships with the device is double-sided -- there's a QWERTY keyboard on the bottom and more traditional controls (along with a trackpad) up top. We didn't think much of the touchpad's small size at the initial hands-on, so hopefully the manufacturer's solved that in the final product. Hisense is certainly cutting things close with this late-December release, but if you click "add to cart" now, it may just arrive in time to make its way underneath a tree.

Bloomberg: HTC will introduce 7-inch and 12-inch Windows RT tablets in 2013

[![](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/windows8.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/htc-will-introduce-7-and-12-inch-windows-rt-tablets/)

Well, it looks like Microsoft has changed its tune about HTC's "experience" when it comes to churning out tablets. Today, _Bloomberg_ reports that the Taiwan-based manufacturer will introduce 7-inch and 12-inch tablets that are based on Qualcomm chips with [Windows RT](http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsrt/). This news directly contradicts a [previous report](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/06/htc-reportedly-excluded-from-windows-8-rt-tablets/) that suggested HTC would be excluded from the Windows tablet world. If the stars align, we can expect each of these devices to hit the market in Q3 of 2013, although pricing remains up in the air. Curiously, the 7-inch iteration is also said to make phone calls, which sounds eerily similar to the the Android-based [Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/07/samsung-galaxy-tab-7-7-review-international-edition/). One thing you won't find, however, are Windows 8-based tablets from HTC, which the company is said to have abandoned due to high costs. Sources speculate that HTC's entry into the fray is based on Microsoft's desire for more manufacturers and greater diversity in the tablet lineup. No doubt that a miniature RT device will accomplish just that.

Archos has been big on custom, exclusive software as a selling point for its mobile devices, even into [Android models](http://www.engadget.com/tag/archos,android/) where the extra work isn't strictly necessary. It's giving the rest of us a taste by allowing everyone to download its Video Player app from Google Play. Any phone or tablet running Android 4.0 or later can use the app to play "most" movie formats, the company says. The app primarily touts a larger amount of network intelligence than some of its peers, including SMB and UPnP sharing, device-to-device playback syncing and internet retrieval of movie details like subtitles. While Archos isn't exactly giving away the keys to the kingdom with a $5 asking price, we at least won't have to switch to new hardware to see what we've been missing.

Polaroid CEO: Android-powered interchangeable-lens camera will launch at CES

[![](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/polaroid-im1836-mirrorless-android-based-camera.jpeg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/polaroid-ceo-android-camera/)

It looks like that Russian Polaroid [social media advert](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/18/polaroid-im1836-android-mirrorless-camera/) may not be far-fetched, after all. In an email to _Imaging Resource_, Polaroid CEO [Scott Hardy](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/the-engadget-interview-polaroid-ceo-scott-hardy-video/) confirmed that "there will be an Android-powered, interchangeable-lens camera introduced by Polaroid at CES 2013." He didn't elaborate on specs, pricing or availability, but the earlier leak lists an 18-megapixel sensor, 3.5-inch touchscreen, 10-30mm lens and built-in WiFi -- all of which seem like reasonable inclusions for an entry-level mirrorless camera. The company's chief executive added that specifications would be confirmed at CES, at which point we'd also hope to see the new compact ILC in the flesh. The practicality of an Android-powered mirrorless model remains up for debate, but curious early adopters eager to open their wallets may now have but weeks to wait to add the world's first such device to their camera collection.

Path 2.9 update introduces contextualized, personalized search (update: now with video)

[![Path 29 update introduces contextualized, personalized search update now with video](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/pathiosandroid.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/path-update-adds-contextual-search/)

Many of us enjoy looking through [our social network history](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/12/facebook-builds-your-own-2012-year-in-review/) to reflect on shared memories, and [Path](http://engadget.com/tag/path) is helping users do just that with its latest 2.9 update. Adding a comprehensive search feature that uses metadata in addition to user-defined tags, searching "Photos from Thanksgiving" pulls relevant images even if they didn't have those words in the post. The same concept applies to different days and times, like "sunset" or "weekend brunch." Other contextual categories include friends, places, seasons and the weather. There's also a "Nearby" function that taps into your phone's GPS for moments captured in your immediate vicinity.

One particular search that impressed us during a hands-on briefing is the ability to search for "emotions." Similar to the "like" feature in Facebook, Path lets users mark a post with one of five emoticons (smile, frown, laugh, gasp or heart). With the 2.9 update, you can search for all the posts that received a particular emoticon ("funny" searches all the laugh-tagged posts for example). As a little easter egg, if you search for "royal flush," you'll bring up the posts that have received at least one of each emoticon. It's more amusing than useful, but we found it cute nonetheless. The search feature is only in English to start, but the company is planning on additional language support in the future. Check after the break for more screens, or hit the links below to grab the latest version of Path from Google Play and iTunes.

Rockmelt social browser comes to iPhone, Android version still in development

[![Rockmelt social browser comes to iPhone, Android version still in development](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/rockmelt-for-iphone-620-wide.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/rockmelt-for-iphone/)

When we heard [Rockmelt](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Rockmelt/) was going to announce some news about its social browser becoming available to lots more people, we assumed that meant the Android version was finally ready. Not quite: turns out the company was just referring to iPhone users. Indeed, the startup just announced an iPhone version of its news aggregator, which should go nicely with the [iPad app](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/rockmelt-for-iPad-social-browser/) that launched back in October. Like the iPad version, it presents articles as endlessly scrollable tiles, not unlike the way your Facebook timeline is laid out. Similar to Facebook, too, you can use so-called emoticodes to like things or indicate other profound human responses, such as "hmm" or "WTF?" Other than that, there's not much to it: swipe left to close out of a story; swipe right to save it as a bookmark. It's available for free in the App Store now; no ETA on that Android version, but we're told the company is actively toiling away on it.

Imo's iPad app augmented with free voice calling, enhanced photo sharing

[![imoim for iPad updated, brings in voice calling and enhanced photo sharing](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/imo-ipad-groupphotos.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/imo-im-ipad-update/)

When Imo crammed free voice calling into [its iPhone application](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/13/imo-rolls-out-free-voice-calling-for-ios-users-hopes-youll-use/), it neglected to port the functionality to its large-screened counterpart. Now, the iPad version of Imo.im is catching up -- adding VoIP support over 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi to other Imo users across iOS and Android. The latest version of the [instant messaging](http://www.engadget.com/tag/InstantMessaging/) aggregator boasts revamped photo tools too, featuring group photo sharing and real-time image uploads. These tweaks accompany a slew of design changes, including a color-coded status indicator bar and similar hue-based notifications for contact availability. Standard stuff, really, but that shouldn't stop iPad-toting chatterboxes from heading to the source link and giving the app a whirl.

Flipboard lands on Android tablets, now supports Nexus 10

[![Flipboard lands on Android tablets, now supports Nexus 10](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/flipboardnexus10lead03.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/flipboard-lands-on-android-tablets-now-supports-nexus-10/)

It's no secret that we're big fans of [Flipboard](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Flipboard/) here at Engadget, but there's one thing we've been longing for: a tablet-optimized [Android version](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/22/flipboard-android-official-launch/). Until now, running the app on the [Nexus 10](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-10-review/) (by sideloading the APK) or even the [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) (officially supported) meant living with a scaled-up phone experience. Today, Flipboard is getting updated in the [Play Store](http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayStore/) to supports a variety of Android tablets such as Samsung's [Galaxy Note 10.1](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review/), the Galaxy Tab series and the Nexus 10. A setting lets you chose between phone and tablet modes, which is useful for mid-size devices like Amazon's [Kindle Fire](http://www.engadget.com/tag/KindleFire/), the Nook and the Nexus 7. Flipboard worked closely with Samsung to optimize the app and take advantage of larger, higher resolution displays. This means more of your favorite tiles, larger story snippets and landscape support (at last). We spent a few hours using Flipboard's new app for Android and came away suitably impressed -- anyone familiar with the [iPad version](http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/flipboard-for-ipad-app-review/) will feel right at home. PR after the break.

MetroPCS intros 4-inch ZTE Avid 4G, brings LTE and ICS for a mere $149

[![MetroPCS intros 4inch ZTE Avid 4G, brings LTE and ICS for a mere $149](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/zteavid1220-1355986199.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/metropcs-zte-avid-4g/)

Despite announcing a couple of [budget-friendly handset](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/06/metropcs-samsung-galaxy-admire-4g/) options [in recent months](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/21/metropcs-outs-lg-motion-4g-in-tandem-with-unlimited-all-you-can/), it's clear MetroPCS doesn't plan to stay put, as the company today let it be known that it's making yet another addition to its affordable Android lineup. And while the newfangled Avid 4G will come on the cheap, it could still be seen as a much better choice than that other [pricier ZTE offering](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/zte-anthem-4g-unveiled-for-metropcs/) on MetroPCS -- albeit the former is carrying a slightly smaller 4-inch, 800 x 480 display, though _it does_ come with a similar (unspecified) 1.2GHz dual-core CPU and a much fresher version of Google's OS ([Ice Cream Sandwich](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-review/)). In addition, ZTE's Avid 4G also features a 5-megapixel camera on the back (VGA on the front), the ability to turn into a mobile hotspot with a few extra bucks per month and, naturally, LTE connectivity. For the relatively small amount of $149, and without any contracts attached, it wouldn't surprise us if the new [Wireless for All](http://www.engadget.com/tag/metropcs/) smartphone on the block ends up gift wrapped in some places come next week's festivities. Speaking of which, folks interested can snag the Avid 4G now from the carrier's site, otherwise a quick trip to the nearest MetroPCS retail store should suffice.

Dragon Mobile Assistant beta for Android updated, lets your voice launch apps and music

[![Nuance updates its Dragon Mobile Assistant beta on Android, delivers expanded functionality and Gingerbread support](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/nuancedragon-update.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/nuance-dragon-mobile-assistant-update/)

[Nuance](http://www.engadget.com/tag/nuance/) has refreshed its [Dragon Mobile Assistant for Android](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/24/nuance-dragon-mobile-assistant-launches-on-android/) to let you do more stuff using speech alone. The beta app now allows you to set alarms, launch apps and play music, in addition to its existing hands-free prowess that covers making calls, getting directions, updating your Twitter status and waking up your device from slumber using a "Hi Dragon" greeting. The [voice-driven](http://www.engadget.com/tag/VoiceRecognition/) personal assistant, which hitherto worked only on ICS and up, also now supports devices running Android 2.3. (And no, you can't customize your phone's nickname. It _has_ to be Dragon, not [Snuffy](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/google-nicknames-hilarity/).)

[Yelp](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Yelp/) on Android has reached version 3.7, and it's gotten a little more social with the addition of Yelp Talk. Now, users can discuss whatever their recommendation-seeking hearts desire by starting and replying to threads. In addition, a fresh action bar UI element has been added to the app's navigation, and users who're the first to add a tip for a business will now receive a "First to Tip" commendation. To round out the update, the folks at Yelp have gussied up their logo with a hint of [holiday cheer](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/18/engadget-show/). Acer eases mystery Iconia B1-A71 Tab past FCC, GLBenchmark shows modest specs

![Acer eases mystery Iconia B1A71 Tab past FCC, GLBenchmark shows modest specs](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/acer-iconia-b1-a71-tablet-12-20-12-01.jpg)

[Acer](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Acer/) looks ready to launch an entry-level tablet into the market judging by an FCC application that popped up today along with an earlier [GLBenchmark](http://www.engadget.com/tag/GLBenchmark/) leak. The test site's report shows a likely 7-inch or so tab with a 1,024 x 600 display, Android 4.1.2 Jellybean, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and [PowerVR SGX](http://www.engadget.com/tag/PowerVR+SGX/) 531 GPU along with very modest test results. Those specs now look very credible when combined with the new FCC document, which shows it sporting WiFi radios but no other data options. The company has been mum so far about when such a device would arrive and at what cost, but judging by the above, it's unlikely to be a bank-breaker. Check the source if parsing radio reports _is_ your bag.

Samsung Galaxy S III 'Premium Suite' upgrade arrives in the UK today

Pining for the multi-window app skills of the Galaxy S III's [bigger brother](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-review/)? Well it looks like the UK iteration is [belatedly](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/05/samsung-reportedly-pushing-android-4-1-2-to-world-galaxy-s-iii/) getting its own premium suite. Already [heavily trailed](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/06/galaxy-s-iii-premium-suite-features-detailed-multi-window-pa/) by Samsung itself, you'll get 'best face', low light mode camera feature, stereo sound balancing, alongside a now customizable notification panel, smart rotation and several more software improvements. Better still, Samsung tells us that the upgrade is rolling out across devices in the British Isles _now_.
