Plair hands-on redux: a clever wireless video streaming HDMI dongle (video)

[![Plair handson redux at Expand 2013 a clever wireless video streaming HDMI dongle](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/plair-hands-on-expand-2013.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/16/plair-wireless-video-streaming-hdmi-dongle/)

We didn't really get to see the [Plair](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/plair-streams-video-to-hdmi-through-wifi/) in action when we last saw it at CES, but luckily, it's here with us at [Expand 2013](http://www.engadget.com/expand/agenda/)! This time round we have a better understanding of what makes this $99, micro-USB-powered HDMI dongle so special: not only can you beam native video clips from your mobile device (through an iOS or Android app) or your desktop Chrome browser's extension to it, but the Plair can also grab the video source from your current page in Chrome and then stream the clip _independently --_ as in once the video's started, you can shut your computer down and still keep the stream going on your TV! You can actually see this demonstrated in our video after the break, where we streamed an episode from NBC's _Saturday Night Live_ website through a WiFi network (but the Plair can also create its own hotspot for direct WiFi connection, which is handy for avoiding slow hotel networks).

In our opinion, the Plair is a neat little gadget for its price, but you'll have to wait until early April for the next batch coming off the production line. Interested buyers will be able to order a Plair on its website around then.

The Android-powered [OUYA](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ouya) game console is set to ship to its many, _many_ Kickstarter backers [later this month](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/09/ouyas-kickstarter-funding-is-complete-over-8-5-million-raised/), and we've got the company's CEO Julie Uhrman live on-stage from our Expand event this weekend talking about just that. Will we finally find out that the console and its Kickstarter campaign were all just a sneaky ploy by Cobra Commander to destroy the world's children? Doubtful, but you never know! The only way to find out is to tune in -- [our livestream's right here](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/16/live-from-expand-a-conversation-with-julie-uhrman/) -- but we'll also be liveblogging Uhrman's conversation with Engadget EIC Tim Stevens, which you've found. The talk kicks off at 4:45PM ET / 1:45PM PT.

Insert Coin finalist: Ziphius aquatic drone hands-on

Joining the handful of [Insert Coin finalists at Expand](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/01/insert-coin-finalists/) is Azorean's cute [Ziphius](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/25/insert-coin-ziphius/) aquatic drone. While Fort Mason is located by the seaside, the folks actually brought their own little pool along to let their [Raspberry Pi](http://www.engadget.com/tag/raspberrypi/)-powered robot splash around in; though it can happily operate in seawater as well and thus adding more use case possibilities -- be it for entertainment (including autonomous ball-chasing, for instance) or for environmental monitoring. Through a direct WiFi connection we were able to use an Android tablet to control both the Ziphius' surprisingly powerful motors and its camera's vertical position, as well as watching a live video feed at the same time.

The final version of the drone will come with an interchangeable chassis to suit different purposes or simply for personalization, and internally it'll be equipped with Raspberry Pi's upcoming high quality camera module, which will enable even better streaming and onboard 1080p 30fps capture. According to CEO Edmundo Nobre, the Kickstarter campaign will launch before the end of the month, and he's hoping to bring the Ziphius to the mass market with a price point at around $200 to $250. Not bad, huh? Stay tuned for our hands-on video.

Xiaomi Box launches in a three-city trial on March 19th at a lower price

[![Xiaomi Box hands-on](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/engadget001es-1363402542.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/tag/2013/03/15/xiaomi-box-launches-in-a-three-city-trial-on-march-19th/)

The [Xiaomi Box](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/14/xiaomi-box-smart-tv-airplay/) has had an arduous road to travel before it could go on sale: Chinese regulations reportedly kept it in limbo until local broadcaster iCNTV stepped in this January to get the ball rolling once again. The end is in sight now that a limited trial is set to start on March 19th. Changsha, Hangzhou and Shanghai will get about 10,000 total units of the Android media hub, whose price is dropping from the originally chosen ¥399 ($64) to an extra-frugal ¥299 ($48). The price slash could well make the set-top box that much more alluring, especially when it's still poised to give both Android and iOS users some media sharing love. Could you please hurry up your release plans, [Xiaomi](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Xiaomi/)?

March Madness Live apps are free this year, stream all the games -- if you have cable

![March Madness Live apps are free this year, stream all the games if you have cable](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/marchmadnessliveipad4.jpg)

This year's version of the NCAA March Madness Live app is live in the iOS App Store (an Android version is scheduled to arrive on Google Play this weekend) and unlike [last year](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/19/march-madness-live-2012-streaming-apps/) the apps are free. Unfortunately there's still a catch, since while the games aired on CBS will be streamed registration free via the web and apps, games on cable (TNT, TBS and TruTV) will require users to login with the account they use for their pay-TV provider.

The action gets started with the seedings on Selection Sunday, with the First Four games kicking off on the 19th. The March Madness apps are ready for smartphones and tablets on Android and iOS and "redesigned for optimization across platforms" this time around. Whether or not you have the privilege of membership (or can borrow a login from a friend) the apps are available beyond the source link.

HP and Samsung offer setup-free printing on the Galaxy S 4, with others to follow

[![Samsung Galaxy S 4 top crop](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/engadget001es.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/tag/2013/03/15/hp-and-samsung-offer-setup-free-printing-on-the-galaxy-s-4/)

As ubiquitous as [wireless printing](http://www.engadget.com/tag/wirelessprinting/) has become, there remains the occasional hoop to jump through for printing from mobile devices if you don't happen to have either a special app or iOS gear that supports [AirPrint](http://www.engadget.com/tag/AirPrint/). HP and Samsung are teaming up to remove many of the headaches for the [Galaxy S 4](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-galaxy-s-4-preview/): when the phone launches in April, it should have setup-free WiFi printing to almost 200 HP inkjets and LaserJets, as long as any given printer is either on the same network or is otherwise accessible through direct printing. Don't expect ubiquitous support, though. Beyond being limited to the one phone, you'll have to stick to some of its preloaded apps, including the browser, contacts, email client, photo gallery, Polaris Office and S Note. It's far from a truly universal solution, then, but the two partners are at least promising zero-setup printing on both the [Galaxy S III](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/) and the [Galaxy Note II](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-review/) through firmware updates coming later in 2013. We'll take the approach if it saves time snagging an old-fashioned boarding pass or some [concert](http://www.engadget.com/tag/concert/) tickets.

Did Samsung's [bizarre GS4 unveiling ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-unpacked-2013-liveblog-galaxy-s-4/)leave you wanting a little more? Well, as it's [often the case](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-us-sign-up-page/), carriers are already preparing for the handset's eventual launch, and two US players have now officially opened the virtual doors to those potential buyers. Just because [XBMC](http://www.engadget.com/tag/xbmc/) 12 Frodo has been [officially released](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/29/xbmc-12-frodo-launches-in-finished-form-with-android-support/) we wouldn't expect the team behind the media PC software to take too long of a break. In fact, in a blog post it's announced plans to return to a monthly development cycle, as well as a code name for version 13 of the software: Gotham. While we wait for the next official release to arrive, the February build features improvements to UPnP with a "Play Using..." push server feature that should be familiar if you've used [Play To](http://www.engadget.com/tag/playto/) on Windows for example. also new are Android fixes that let it rotate in any direction, and control the device's native audio. there are other changes as well, which can be reviewed beyond the source link, along with test versions for your preferred platform.

Another week, another mega Android smartphone release! This time it's Samsung's eagerly awaited [Galaxy S 4](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-galaxy-s-4-preview/). Yes, we've lost the Roman numerals, as their marketing certainly hinted, but otherwise, not a lot has changed. In fact, even we experts, trained in the art of cellphone identification, are going to have a hard time telling the difference between this new Galaxy S and its predecessor from a distance.

Compatible with all your existing iRig mics and peripherals, the app is tailored to ensuring all your audio is suitably organized by date or location -- it even saves a backup version for those all-important recording sessions. There's also a waveform editor available as an in-app purchase ($4.99), adding the ability to select, crop and loop on your phone. You can also reduce background noise as well as speed up (or slow down) your files without affecting the timbre. Recording time is dependent on how much storage space available on your Android, so those phones with [expandable memory](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-galaxy-s-4-preview/) are at a slight advantage here. If your audio needs a bit of work, you can pick up the app at the source starting today.

Facebook allegedly skirts Google Play store with latest update, adds auto-download of newest versions

[![Facebook allegedly skirting Google Play store with latest update, adds auto-download of newest versions](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/facebook-1363340140.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/15/facebook-update-skirts-play-store/)

Did Google's Larry Page get on the wrong side of Zuckerberg when he was [less than complimentary](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/17/ce-oh-no-he-didnt-googles-larry-page-says-facebook-does-bad-job/) about Facebook a couple of months ago? Maybe so, as the latest update to the social network's app for Android appears to be ignoring the normal route of outing a new version through the Play store, using the app itself to push the update to users. We haven't seen the prompt ourselves, but _Liliputing_ has some screenshots of it (shown above) and is reporting the update auto-downloads and notifies you when its ready to be installed. The new version is said to allow profile picture changes within the app, make messaging easier and grant users the ability to flag spam and hide feed posts you don't want to see. It also alters the app's permissions, allowing it to update without your approval. A Facebook product manager has taken to the social network's Help Center to clarify this will only happen when connected to WiFi, _The Verge_ spotted (we can't locate this thread). Maybe we're out of favor with Facebook also, as we haven't been offered the update on our phones just yet, but the comments on _Liliputing_ seem to confirm its out there. Has Google already stepped in? Let us know how your app is reacting in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 drafts in Swiftkey to power its keyboard

[![Samsung's Galaxy S 4 taps into Swiftkey knowhow for its builtin keyboard](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/swiftkey.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/15/swiftkey-samsung-galaxy-s4/)

We'd heard rumors that [Swiftkey](http://www.engadget.com/tag/swiftkey/) might have assisted Blackberry on its well-received (and often prescient) [BB10 keyboard](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/01/rim-blackberry-10-keyboard/), but the app maker has now confirmed that its software is behind the [Galaxy S 4](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-galaxy-s-4-preview/)'s native keyboard. It's the first time that the company's publicly admitted to powering a handset manufacturer's keys and will sidestep the need for S 4 users to download its standalone app. Swiftkey's CTO Ben Medlock said that the keyboard is "at the heart of [Samsung's] flagship smartphone" and is hopefully just the first of many Android devices arriving with the company's voodoo already built in. We've added Ben's full statement after the break.

Samsung's JK Shin: there's 'lackluster demand' for Windows-based phones, tablets

[![Samsungs JK Shin theres lackluster demand for Windowsbased phones, tablets](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/samsung-jk-shin-1363340866.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/15/jk-shin-no-demand-windows-products/)

You don't need to be Captain Subtext to understand that a few manufacturers (and developers) aren't best pleased with Microsoft's latest mobile products. The latest to damn Redmond with faint praise is Samsung's newly-minted Co-CEO, [JK Shin](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-elects-co-ceos-jk-shin-boo-keun-yoon/), who told _The Wall Street Journal_ that demand for Windows-based phones and tablets isn't sending the company's accountants cross-eyed with glee. When asked about Samsung's relationship with Microsoft after the latter [deepened its ties](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/24/nokia-microsoft-payments/) with Nokia, Shin said:

> "Smartphones and tablets based on Microsoft's Windows operating system aren't selling very well. There is a preference in the market for Android. In Europe, we're also seeing lackluster demand for Windows-based products."

Which, naturally, has done nothing to scotch those [persistent rumors](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/06/samsung-windows-rt-ativ-tab-germany/) of the [ATIV Tab](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/04/samsung-ativ-tab-review/) being axed in Europe as well as [the US](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/10/samsung-cancels-windows-rt-plans-in-us/). The CEO added that we can expect to see a [Tizen-based](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/25/bada-integrated-into-tizen/) [phone](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/26/tizen-developer-phone-hands-on/) in the third quarter of the year, although Samsung will continue to flirt with every available OS for the needs of its customers.

Coming this April, [BLU Products](http://www.engadget.com/tag/BluProducts/) will have three new smartphones vying for your hard-earned dollar. The trio of dual-SIM handsets, known as the Life View, Life One and Life Play, will be sold unlocked on Amazon and will range in price between $229 and $299. As a nice touch, Android 4.2 will be common among the bunch, as will backside-illuminated sensors on the cameras and the quad-core, 1.2GHz [MediaTek MT6589](http://www.engadget.com/tag/mt6589/) (Cortex A7) SoC. Likewise, each smartphone will also feature an HD IPS display.

The Life View ($299), the largest of the bunch, includes a massive 5.7-inch display, a 12-megapixel rear / 5-megapixel front camera, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage and a 2,600mAh battery. Meanwhile, the more reasonably sized Life One ($299) includes a 5-inch display, a 13-megapixel rear / 5-megapixel front camera, similar storage specs and a 2,000mAh battery. Lastly, the sleekest of the three, the Life Play ($229), includes a 4.7-inch display and measures 7.9mm thick. Here, you can expect to find an 8-megapixel rear / 2-megapixel front camera, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of expandable storage and an 1,800mAh battery. You'll find the band support for each of the three phones in the PR after the break, but needless to say, you'll be safe on AT&T (and in many areas, T-Mobile).

Foursquare for Android now greets newcomers, says what's fresh for locals

[Foursquare](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Foursquare/) gave more adventurous iOS users an [updated Explore section](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/01/foursquare-explore-ios-app-redesigned/) at the start of the month that, among many other things, better highlighted either just-opened locations or the hottest places to be. It's the Android crowd's turn to check out new scenes: their updated Foursquare app will tell a traveler what sights and sounds are worth catching when visiting a new location, and better emphasizes what's new for anyone on familiar turf. If you're a tourist worried about fitting in like a local, or just want to check out a fresh location before it's ruined by popularity, hit the Google Play link at the source.

Google Fiber app reaches all Android 4.2 devices

[![Google Fiber app reaches all Android 42 devices](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/google-fiber-619.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/15/google-fiber-app-reaches-all-android-4-2-devices/)

If you're one of the precious few to have access to [Google Fiber](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/13/google-fiber-installations-begin-come-with-more-tv-channels/), you may have been disappointed by the need to use its companion app on a [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) -- a fine tablet, but certainly not the only device in Google's universe. Thankfully, a new update significantly broadens that pool. The app should now offer remote control and content browsing on phones and tablets that run Android 4.2 or later, whether it's a [Nexus 4](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-4-review/) or the upcoming [Galaxy S 4](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-galaxy-s-4-preview/). Viewers should also see a simpler interface, no matter what hardware they're using. Those fortunate enough to have the fiber TV service just need to swing past Google Play to expand their control of the living room.

Sky's Movies app may be [old hat](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/sky-mobile-apps-on-the-way-include-movies-channel-companion-for/) for iOS users, but the companion experience has only just arrived on Android. Samsung Galaxy S 4 official: 5-inch 1080p display, Octa-core Exynos chip and 13MP camera

![Samsung Galaxy S 4 officially announced](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/samsunggs4-eng.jpg)

Another year, another [Galaxy S flagship](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-is-official/) smartphone from Samsung. 2013's version of the crown jewel, the Galaxy S 4, has just been officially announced at its [Unpacked event](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/samsung-unpacked-2013-liveblog-galaxy-s-4/). Since we know you're dying to find out what's new, let's dive straight into the details. The GS 4 features a 5-inch 1080p (1,920 x 1,080) Super AMOLED panel which offers a pixel density of 441 ppi. It's also a powerful beast: it packs 2GB RAM and will come with either a 1.6GHz Exynos [Octa-core](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/09/samsung-announces-exynos-5-octa-chip-at-ces/) chip or a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm, depending on your region. (Unfortunately, Samsung hasn't yet specified which Snapdragon we can expect, but we're guessing it's at least a [600](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/07/qualcomm-snapdragon-800-and-600-chips/) if not an 800.) Refreshingly, it will also come with Android 4.2.2 on-board when it launches.

Dimension-wise, the GS 4 is 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm (5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 inch) and weighs 130g (4.59 ounces). The chassis itself is actually 0.8mm skinnier, 0.7mm thinner and 3g lighter than its predecessor, which is impressive given its larger screen size and 2,600mAh battery. It will launch in black and white hues, though Samsung plans to add more colors to its lineup as the year progresses. Head below the break as we continue to reveal what else you can expect from the newest Galaxy device.

Google My Tracks update brings Drive integration and a lock screen widget

Cyclists and runners with Android phones have had a rare first-party option for keeping tabs on their performance through Google's [My Tracks](http://www.engadget.com/tag/mytracks/), but the app hasn't been entirely in step with those who upgrade their OS as quickly as they barrel down the street. It's back on pace with a quiet update: My Tracks now has a customizable lock screen widget for [Android 4.2](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/google-bumps-android-to-4-2-keeps-jelly-bean-moniker/) users who want to know their distance or speed details at a glance. Whether or not you're running the latest and greatest Android version, the upgrade will sync finished tracks with [Google Drive](http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoogleDrive/) for safekeeping and sharing; extra-competitive types can also import KML files and view others' tracks for comparisons. Hit the source link if time (or simple oneupmanship) is of the essence.

[Redbox Instant](http://www.engadget.com/tag/redboxinstant/), the video-streaming service from Verizon, is launching to the public today. This launch follows a three-month closed [beta test](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/20/redbox-instant-beta-invites-slowly-start-rolling-out-ios-and-an/), and it comes about a month after the company's [announcement](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/05/redbox-instant-xbox/) that the service would come to the Xbox 360 as a console launch exclusive. To jog your memory, Redbox Instant offers users unlimited access to some 4,000 movies in addition to four DVD rentals at $8 a month. Content partners include heavyweights like Warner Bros and [Epix ](http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix/), the latter of which offers content from Viacom, MGM and Lions Gate Entertainment.

Speaking to _GigaOM_, Redbox Instant CEO Shawn Strickland said his product's focus remains movies -- both physical and digital -- which differs from Netflix's TV-heavy library and emphasis on web content. Strickland also said that, while talk of any exclusive content is "really premature," it could be an option down the road. In addition to offering Xbox 360 support, the service is open to [iOS and Android](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/12/redbox-instant-pricing/) users, [along with](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/09/redbox-instant-ces-2013/) those who own a Vizio, LG, Samsung or Google TV product.

Take Hands-Free 360 Degree Panoramic Photos With an iPhone (Video)

In a way, this app is nothing but a cute gimmick. There are many apps that allow you to make panoramic photos on an iPhone, not to mention the panorama feature built into iOS6 -- and plenty for Android, too. But Cycloramic makes your iPhone spin around while standing on edge (on a smooth surface), which is a fine stunt and a great party trick. And it's endorsed by Steve Wozniak, which is a boast few iPhone apps can make. He calls it "Unexpected, fanciful, and useful all at the same time!" Even if it had no practical value whatsoever, you might want to blow 99 cents on Cyclorama just to watch your phone make you dizzy. Most Android phones won't stand on edge. (Tim's won't and neither will mine.) So an Android version would require a stand. Or at least a pattern so we could make our own stands out of cardboard or sheet plastic. But that's a "maybe," and apparently not likely to come along soon. For the moment we'll just have to envy iPhone owners as their phones magically spin around, taking photos now and then as they turn.

CBS brings full episode streaming in HD to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

[![CBS brings full episode streaming in HD to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/cbs-ipad-app.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/cbs-brings-full-episode-streaming-hd-ipad-iphone-ipod/)

Welcome to the 21st century, CBS. Following in the footsteps of [NBC, TBS, TNT, ABC](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/nbc-tnt-and-tbs-ipad-apps-add-full-length-episodes-wont-bring/) and a smattering of others, CBS has launched a new iOS app that enables iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners to stream full-length, HD-quality episodes of CBS programming right on their mobile device. The app includes offerings from its primetime, daytime and late night schedule, with flagships like _NCIS_, _CSI_, _How I Met Your Mother_ and _The Late Show with David Letterman_ being called out in particular. Daytime and late night programming will be available within 24 hours after initial airing, while most primetime programs will be available on the eighth day after broadcast. For those awaiting similar treatment on non-iOS platforms, the company has assured the universe that it'll bring similar functionality to Windows 8 and Android "later this year."

The upside here is that there's no mention of cost, which should ease any frustrations of having to wait up to eight days to see something that aired live on the network. Moreover, the new app will integrate the existing CBS Connect App experience by the start of the Fall TV season, bringing a polished second-screen experience to those watching _CSI_, _Criminal Minds_, _Hawaii Five-O_ and _NCIS: Los Angeles_. Now, if only we could convince [every other channel](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/12/hbo-airplay-support-hbo-go-max-go-airplay-apple-ipad/) to distribute its content over the web without arcane restrictions, we'd be happier than Gallagher at a farmer's market.

Google yanks ad-blocking apps from Play Store, points to developer agreement

[![Google yanks adblocking apps from Play store, points to developer agreement](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/android-oops.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/google-yanks-ad-blocking-apps-from-play-store/)

You know how it goes -- "rules" are only "rules" if someone bothers to [enforce them](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/grooveshark-back-in-google-play-controversy/). And enforce Google has. While programs such as AdBlock, AdAway, AdFree and the like have been running unabated for quite some time now, Google has evidently buckled down and yanked the lot of 'em overnight. Of course, the company's Play Store developer agreement already makes clear that apps designed specifically to hinder the natural course of advertising won't be allowed, but it's certainly interesting to see the company finally making good on its words. Specifically, the agreement states:

> "You agree that you will not engage in any activity with the Market, including the development or distribution of Products, that interferes with, disrupts, damages, or accesses in an unauthorized manner the devices, servers, networks, or other properties or services of any third party including, but not limited to, Android users, Google or any mobile network operator."

See that bit about third-party clients' services? We're guessing that it's in reference to implementations of advertising code. Looks like the wild, wild west has a sheriff in town.

NVIDIA opted out of PlayStation 4, cites Sony not offering enough money

[![](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/02/ps4620x340pxhedimg.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/nvidia-playstation-4/)

Having produced the graphics chips that powered both the original Xbox and the PlayStation 3, it was a surprise to see [NVIDIA](http://www.engadget.com/tag/nvidia)'s name left out of [Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal event](http://www.engadget.com/tag/playstationmeeting2013) last month. But there was AMD, picking up the empty spot left by NVIDIA, powering the PS4 with its 8-core "Jaguar" CPU and Radeon GPU. So, what happened? While we don't know the specifics of how AMD won the contract, NVIDIA's senior VP of content and tech Tony Tamasi tells _GameSpot_ that his company, "Didn't want to do the business at the price those guys [Sony] were willing to pay."

In so many words, Tamasi says NVIDIA weighed its options against other potential products the company would be working on -- rather than producing discreet tech for a single console manufacturer, thus being unable to use said tech elsewhere -- and decided against it. "We had to look at console business as an opportunity cost. If we say, did a console, what other piece of our business would we put on hold to chase after that?" he tells the game site.

NVIDIA is indeed working on a variety of new products, including an Android-powered [Tegra 4](http://www.engadget.com/tag/tegra4) gaming handheld called [Project Shield](http://www.engadget.com/tag/projectshield). That's in addition to its bread-and-butter business of PC GPU development -- the company [recently unveiled its Titan GPU](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/19/nvidia-gtx-titan-announce/), a $1,000 card with enough power to keep your gaming graphics needs met for years to come (or at least we sure hope so at that price).

BlackBerry acknowledged that we live in a [bring-your-own-device](http://www.engadget.com/tag/byod/) world with [BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/31/rim-details-blackberry-enterprise-service-10/), which oversees platforms beyond Waterloo's own. It's reinforcing that support through new details for Secure Work Space for iOS and Android, an expansion of [BlackBerry Balance](http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry,balance/) to rival mobile devices. The upcoming offering will blend a BES10 update with a locked-down suite of apps, letting those of us without a BlackBerry easily check our corporate calendars, email and notes without requiring a [VPN](http://www.engadget.com/tag/VPN/) or other elaborate gateways. Whether or not you think the company is giving away the keys to its kingdom, the expanded Secure Work Space should put up a (frankly needed) wall between our corporate and personal lives sometime in the second quarter, or before the end of June.

What's more, the _WSJ_ reports that the head of that soon-to-be-former unit, Jeff Huber, will be moving to Google X, the lab responsible for projects like Glass and Google's self-driving car.

Google Removing Ad-Blockers From Play

SirJorgelOfBorgel writes "It appears Google has begun removing ad-blocker apps for Android from the Play store, citing breached of the Play Store Developer Distribution Agreement. The apps would be welcome back as soon as they no longer violated the agreement, though that doesn't seem possible while keeping the apps' core functionality intact."

Microsoft updates its Windows Phone web demo for WP8, hopes you'll update your phone too

[![Microsoft updates its Windows Phone web demo for WP8](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/03/windows-phone-8-web-demo.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/14/microsoft-updates-its-windows-phone-web-demo-for-wp8/)

Microsoft remains convinced that you'll like Windows Phone if you [only give it a try](http://www.engadget.com/tag/smokedbywindowsphone/). Accordingly, it just recently updated its [web-based demo](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/29/microsoft-enables-android-and-ios-users-to-experience-windows-ph/) to reflect all the changes in [Windows Phone 8](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review/). If you let the web app access Facebook, you'll get a personalized sample of the OS on your desktop or mobile browser that includes resizable home tiles, Kid's Corner and other newer additions. No, it's not a full-fledged simulator, but it does give about as good a taste as you'll get without the real hardware in your hands. We also can't say that everyone will be sold on the concept -- still, it's worth a spin for anyone keeping their smartphone options open.
