McAfee shows how major Android scamware ticks, prevents us from learning first-hand
Most [Android malware](http://www.engadget.com/tag/android,malware) lives in the margins, away from Google Play and the more reliable app shops. It's nonetheless a good idea to be on the lookout for rogue code, and [McAfee](http://www.engadget.com/tag/McAfee/) has stepped in with thorough explanations of how one of the most common scamware strains, Android.FakeInstaller, works its sinister ways. The bait is typically a search-optimized fake app market or website; the apps themselves not only present a legitimate-looking front but include dynamic code to stymie any reverse engineering. Woe be to anyone who's tricked long enough to finish the installation, as the malware often sends text messages to expensive premium phone numbers or links target devices to botnets. The safeguard? McAfee would like you to sign up for its antivirus suite, but you can also keep a good head on your shoulders -- stick to trustworthy shops and look for dodgy behavior before anything reaches your device.

Chevy Volt EcoHub app tells drivers how little they pay to charge, goads them into staying green (video)
GM's [OnStar](http://www.engadget.com/tag/OnStar/) team would really like us to stay on the electric side of the [Chevy Volt's](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/08/2013-chevy-volt-stretches-out-the-electric-miles/) powertrain as much as possible. That's the selling point, after all. Rather than simply preach green driving and hope for the best, the division is testing a new EcoHub app that reminds Volt drivers just how miserly their [plug-in hybrids](http://www.engadget.com/tag/pluginhybrid/) can be. Qualifying owners who opt in or subscribe to OnStar have the Volt's energy usage costs compared to their home's total electricity bill, showing how much cheaper it can be to avoid the gas pump. There's more if money isn't enough of a motivator -- the app also builds in a counter that estimates how much gas Volt drivers are saving nationwide. The eco-friendly ego boost is currently limited to Android users participating in Pecan Street's [smart grid](http://www.engadget.com/tag/smartgrid/) project in Austin, but long-term plans have the app reaching iOS and all Volt fans eager to justify their ride.

Over 60% of Android Malware Hides In Fake Versions of Popular Apps

An anonymous reader writes "Like any popular platform, Android has malware. Google's mobile operating system is relatively new, however, so the problem is still taking form. In fact, it turns out that the larger majority of threats on Android come from a single malware family: Android.FakeInstaller, also known as OpFake, which generates revenue by silently sending expensive text messages in the background. McAfee says that the malware family makes up more than 60 percent of Android samples the company processes."

sfcrazy writes "Samsung has created a new Linux file system called F2FS. Jaegeuk Kim of Samsung writes on the Linux Kernel Mailing List: F2FS is a new file system carefully designed for the NAND flash memory-based storage devices. German court sides with Motorola, says it didn't violate Microsoft patent (updated)
Perhaps it's not as loud or high profile as [Apple vs. Samsung](http://www.engadget.com/tag/apple,samsung,patent), but there is another patent war raging that is no less vicious between Motorola and Microsoft. The two have been at each others' throats for a few years now and, while Google has offered an [olive branch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/02/motorola-withdraws-recent-itc-complaint-against-apple/) or [two](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/28/apple-strikes-licensing-deal-with-motorola-in-germany/) to Apple, we've yet to see a similar gesture made in Redmond's direction. The latest chapter in this saga sees the regional court in Mannheim handing Moto a victory in a complaint filed by Microsoft over a patent relating to a set of mobile phone APIs. Its a rare bright spot for the new Google subsidiary, which has struggled to score legal points both in Germany in the US. Microsoft has [scored](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/18/itc-bans-motorola-mobile-devices-for-infringing-microsoft-patent/) [several](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/microsoft-wins-third-injunction-motorola-software-patent/) [injunctions](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/27/microsoft-vs-motorola-decision-sees-droids-banned-in-germany-ov/) [against](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/microsoft-motorola-sms-patent-germany/) Motorola products, while the [lone ban](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/02/german-court-grants-motorola-injunction/) awarded to the phone manufacturer remains [unenforceable](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/us-appeals-court-rules-motorola-cant-enforce-injunction-against/) pending a breach of contract lawsuit. For a bit more detail dig into the more coverage link.
**Update**: Microsoft's VP and Deputy General Counsel, David Howard, just issued this statement in response to the ruling.
> _This decision does not impact multiple injunctions Microsoft has already been awarded and has enforced against Motorola products in Germany. It remains that Motorola is broadly infringing Microsoft's intellectual property, and we hope it will join the vast majority of Android device makers by licensing Microsoft's patents. _

Alcatel intros OneTouch T10 tablet with 7-inch display and Ice Cream Sandwich
Even though [Alcatel](http://www.engadget.com/tag/alcatel/) does have devices out in the market like that [Venture](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/13/virgin-mobile-ventrue/) or [OT986](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/29/alcatel-ot986-tcl-s900-ics-smartphone/), the company still isn't exactly known for its hardware offerings. With the 7-inch (800 x 480) [OneTouch](http://www.engadget.com/tag/onetouch/) T10, Alcatel's entering the overcrowded Android tablet space, and doing so without much flare -- especially when compared side-by-side with, say, Google's flagship, the [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/). Something also tells us the OneTouch T10 might just be [one of those](http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/06/viewsonic-viewpad-7x-rebranded-as-camangi-mangrove-7-lands-in-j/) reincarneted slates, but that's not to say _some_ won't appreciate the inclusion of [Ice Cream Sandwich](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-review/) alongside a 1GHz, single-core Rockchip CPU, 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD). Details on pricing and availability are still a tad bit scarce, though word on the web is it'll be priced at €130 (around $170) once it's up for grabs in the US and Europe.

Square making Starbucks debut in November, will accept digital tips in 2013
If you're wondering when Starbucks is finally going to get around to [rolling out Square](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/08/starbucks-square-investment-apps-directory/), wonder no more. The company announced that starting in November customers will be able to pay for their no-fat soy mocha lattes using the platform founded by Jack Dorsey. Of course, being able to use Square Wallet at the nation's largest coffee chain is a major milestone for the mobile payment scene as a whole, but loyal customers likely already have a Starbucks card and its [associated app](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/11/starbucks-android-app-update-uk-Canada/). Only problem with both Square and the [Starbucks app](http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/19/starbucks-lets-you-pay-for-that-trenta-with-the-iphone-in-your-s/) is you still need to carry cash to tip your barista. Thankfully, at some point in 2013, the company will start accepting tips through its own app and Square Wallet. Which also means you'll be out of convenient excuses for not tipping, you cheap bastard.

TomTom Navigator hits (some) Android devices, we go hands-on
[TomTom](http://www.engadget.com/tag/tomtom/) just released it's [Android navigation app](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/tomtom-finally-hits-android/) on Google Play to the robot-toting hordes, some three years after its [iOS version](http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/17/tomtom-navigation-for-iphone-3g-and-3gs-arrives/) debuted. Unfortunately, quite a number of newer smartphones, like the [Galaxy S III](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-20-million/), aren't yet compatible, due to a current resolution limitation of 800 or 854 x 480 (WVGA or FWVGA). That didn't deter us from wanting to take it for a spin anyway, so we took our old Galaxy S out of mothballs -- and there's no place better to sample a GPS maker's wares than rural France, which has endless tiny tracks criss-crossing the countryside. To see how we made out, head past the break for the rest of the story.

New Android Mobile Bingo App Released

Toys R Us launches family-friendly internet movie service, plans Tabeo access, HD video and more
Like Amazon, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble before it, Toys R Us is following the path of being a retailer distributing its own branded hardware ([Tabeo](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/10/toys-r-us-7-inch-tabeo-kids-tablet/), [Nabi](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/11/toys-r-us-nabi-android-tablet-lets-junior-play-while-mommy-drin/)) with an accompanying app store, and then supplementing those offerings with a digital media service. ToysrusMovies.com is a [Rovi](http://www.engadget.com/tag/rovi)-powered digital storefront currently available to PCs, Macs and other Flash compatible devices, with an app planned for the Tabeo soon, as well as Blu-ray players, HDTVs and other mobile devices including iOS and Android. The content consists of "more than 4,000" titles from big names like Disney, Fox, NBCUniversal and more, available for 24-hour rental starting at $2.99, and $5.99 for download or streaming. Right out of the gate its scored an early release of _Madagascar 3_ two weeks before the disc release, currently a $16 purchase with "unlimited" streaming to activated devices, with downloads to up to 5 devices. Now of course, all it needs is some compatible devices, but building an ecosystem is a process, and may be key to separating Toys R Us' offerings from the competition. Check out more details in the press release after the break or at the site.

Vic Gundotra post hints Snapseed for Android may be close, bring Google+ integration
When Google [bought Nik Software](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/17/google-buys-snapseed-developer-nik-software/), there was some worry that [Snapseed](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Snapseed/) would go the proverbial [dodo's route](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/vic-gundotra-says-niks-high-end-tools-will-survive/) and fade into obscurity as part of a larger Google app. We won't see that ignominious end anytime soon if Senior Engineering VP [Vic Gundotra's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/VicGundotra/) photography is as valid a clue as it looks. On an evening flight to Baltimore, Gundotra posted a view of the setting sun to Google+ using Snapseed -- a rather unique achievement given that the existing, iOS-only app doesn't know the social network exists. Knowing the executive's usual choice of smartphone, the public use could be the hint of the already planned Android port getting close to launch, even if there's no way to know exactly when and how the image editing app could arrive. Let's hope that Gundotra's post is more than just a fleeting glimpse of a product that gets shelved later on.

Google makes Gesture Search compatible with Nexus 7, improves app's overall performance
Earlier this morning, Google did the iOS crowd a generous favor by [flipping the switch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/street-view-comes-to-google-maps-web-app-on-ios/) on its [Street View](http://www.engadget.com/tag/streetview) service to help alleviate some of those [Maps troubles](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/tim-cook-apologizes-for-maps-mess/), so it's only natural to take care of the Android faithful as well. With that in mind, Google has updated its [Gesture Search](http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/04/google-gesture-search-puts-your-contacts-just-a-stroke-away/) to be fully compatible with the ASUS-built [Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/), as well as improving the application's UI, boosting search performance, adding support for more languages and allowing contacts without digits to now be searchable. The new version of Gesture Search can be downloaded now via Google Play, straight from your device or by simply using the link down below.

Revotron writes "Readers of Entertainment Weekly might be shocked to find their magazine is a good bit heavier than normal this week. US-based broadcaster CW placed an ad in Entertainment Weekly which uses a fully-functional 3G Android device, a T-Mobile SIM card, and a specialized app to display short video advertisements along with the CW Twitter feed. Writers at Mashable were willing to geek out with a Swiss Army knife and a video camera to give us all the gory details as they tore it down piece-by-piece to discover the inner workings of CW's new ad."

Parrot unveils Asteroid Smart, Tablet and Mini car infotainment systems, we go hands-on
We first laid eyes on Parrot's first [Android-based Asteroid car infotainment system](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/16/parrot-asteroid-android-powered-car-stereo-hands-on/) a couple years ago at CES. Then, at this past year's show, we got a sneak peek at a trio of successor [Asteroid devices](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/parrot-asteroid-ck-asteroid-nav-asteroid-2din-infotainment-sys/). Now, a mere 10 months later, the Asteroid Smart, Tablet and Mini have finally arrived in consumer-ready garb. First, there's a flagship in-dash system, the double-DIN Asteroid Smart. It features a 6.2-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display, a Texas Instruments 800MHz processor and runs a heavily skinned version of Android 2.3. The Smart also has four USB 2.0 ports (one which pushes 5V to charge an iPod) for connecting external devices like the included GPS antenna or a dongle for cellular data. Plus, there are 3.5mm line-in and microphone jacks to go with a host of RCA connections and a micro-USB port round the back. Bluetooth 3.0 is baked in, and an SD card slot sits behind the detachable security strip to the left of the screen.

The Smart's siblings, the Asteroid Mini and Asteroid Tablet are also coming to North America this month. The Tablet packs similar specs as the Smart, only it's got a 5-inch capacitive screen and is portable, as opposed to an in-dash solution. It runs the same skinned version of Gingerbread, has GPS and Bluetooth radios, and packs 512MB of RAM and 1GB of on-board storage, plus an SD slot. It also comes with a wireless touchpad remote so you can control the system straight from your steering wheel. Meanwhile, the Mini, with its 3.2-inch, non-touch screen has a similar form factor to the Tablet and comes with a wireless remote as well. However, its OS is built on Android 1.5 and it relies upon an external GPS antenna like its bigger, double-DIN cousin. The Asteroid Tablet will retail for $399, and the Mini will cost a hundred bucks less when they go on sale in a few weeks.
We got to swipe our way around the Parrot Smart, so join us after the break to see it in action.

Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro for AT&T hands-on
You can't blame us for having a bit of a soft spot for rugged devices. There's something comforting about knowing you can drop or drown your phone and it wont be any worse for wear. That's the reason we keep coming back to the Rugby series. Its specs dont impress and its certainly not a looker, but its sturdy masculine design kinda gets our blood pumping. So, we just had to stop by Samsung's table at tonight's AT&T event and spend some time with the [Galaxy Rugby Pro](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/atandt-4g-lte-adds-galaxy-note-2-galaxy-tab-2-10-1-galaxy-express/), an updated version of the [Rugby Smart](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/samsung-rugby-smart-review/) we reviewed earlier this year. The basic design is the same -- it's a chunky slab of thick, ribbed, soft-touch plastic and rubber, with a sizable chrome screw holding the backplate in place. The textured rubber buttons up front have been reduced from four to three, in keeping with the updated user experience of Ice Cream Sandwich. Oh, did we mention it ditches Gingerbread for some delicious Android 4.0.4 goodness -- a most welcome upgrade from the Smart. It's not exactly smooth sailing on the 1.5GHz CPU, but the lag never got unbearable in our brief hands on time.
Perhaps the biggest knock against the device though, is the rather lackluster 4-inch WVGA screen. It's a Super AMOLED panel, which means top-notch contrast, but colors were definitely off and a little washed out looking. It does however mean it should be perfectly viewable in direct sunlight -- a major concern for devices such as this. The paltry 768GB of RAM and 8GB of storage aren't really anything to write home about, but at least there's a microSD slot under the battery. Along the left edge of the device is the volume rocker and a customizable key that can be used to turn on the torch or launch the camera or any number of other tasks, while the right side is home to the power / lock button. The micro-USB port is on the bottom under a tiny plastic door while the headphone jack is similarly protected at the top of the device. We can't say we're expecting much from the 5MP camera, but the extremely dark conditions at the AT&T event ensured that we couldn't get anything usable out of it. For more check out the video after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Express heads to AT&T, we go hands-on
Samsung's Galaxy Express got a bit of a short shrift last month, [revealed](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/atandt-4g-lte-adds-galaxy-note-2-galaxy-tab-2-10-1-galaxy-express/) alongside a slew of other Samsung AT&T 4G LTE phones and not getting its own day in the sun. Here we are at AT&T's New York City event, providing that sun (albeit on a rainy evening). The 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen looks great, even running the aging Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android, and the 1.5 GHz dual-core processor is no slouch at speedily navigating the OS. The rear and front cameras leave a bit to be desired, with just 5-megapixels out back and 1.3 up front, but let's be honest -- you're not exactly looking for a top of the line camera in a Galaxy Express, are you? It'll be launching later this year on AT&T, though pricing and an exact release date have yet to be confirmed. Follow us past the break for a quick video of the device, won't you?

LG Optimus G for AT&T hands-on (video)
Well, we're finally getting a look at the [US edition](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/03/lg-optimus-g-att-sprint/) of LG's Optimus G and surprise, surprise, it's not that terribly different from the version we got to play with in both [Korea](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/17/lg-optimus-g-hands-on-with-koreas-latest-powerhouse-video/) and [NYC](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/lg-optimus-g-hands-on-redux-video/) last month. We're still looking at that stunning 4.7-inch 1280x768 True HD IPS PLUS display, a speedy Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, a hefty 2,100mAh battery and 16GB storage -- on this model, at least. But what, if anything, has changed on this Android 4.0 handset now that it's here in the US cruising along on AT&T's LTE network? Keep reading after the break to find out.

Samsung Galaxy Note II for AT&T hands-on: an S-Pen phablet with 4G LTE (update: video)
[AT&T's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ATT/) still keeping us in the dark about a hard date for the [Galaxy Note II's release](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/samsung-galaxy-note-ii/), but at least we know it's real and [on the way](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/atandt-4g-lte-adds-galaxy-note-2-galaxy-tab-2-10-1-galaxy-express/). Confirmed to ship sometime this holiday season, this variant of Samsung's phablet refresh sports a 5.5-inch 1,280 x 720 HD Super AMOLED display, 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos processor, 8-megapixel rear camera capable of 1080p video capture, beefy 3,100mAh battery and, of course, a refined S-Pen. It's nigh unchanged from both the [global](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-hands-on/) and [Sprint models](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-for-sprint-hands-on/) we'd gotten hands-on with previously; a trend the OEM sparked off with the release of the GS III earlier this year. And in a move that augurs well for those of you averse to branding, there's no superfluous carrier logo blemishing its smooth white back.
If you thought the [original Note](http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/28/samsung-galaxy-note-review/) was big and unwieldy, prepare to stretch your thumb even further up the display. Samsung added 0.2-inches to this update, while incorporating elements of its "famed" _inspired by nature_ design that conspire to lend this handset a reassuring in-hand fit. On the lower right-hand side, you'll find a convenient slot for the S-Pen which, when removed, triggers an action menu that can be customized to launch selected apps. A large physical home button rests just below the expansive 16:9 screen and is flanked by capacitive buttons for menu and back, while the front-facing camera resides up above and hardware keys for volume and power are placed on the left and right edges, respectively.
On the software front, you're still looking at a TouchWizzed version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, as well as some carrier-specific apps that come pre-loaded, like My AT&T, CodeScanner, FamilyMap, Navigator and Ready2Go. As you might expect from its quad-core Exynos, performance was smooth... almost buttery smooth, but we'd be remiss if we didn't mention a slight hesitancy between pulling out the S-Pen and the launch of that Smart Actions menu. Bear in mind, this is a pre-production model, so most of those kinks should be worked out by the time it launches this holiday season. Check out the video after the break.

Sony Xperia TL for AT&T hands-on (video)
It's not unusual for a device to be sold under a couple of [different](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/09/sony-xperia-gx-release-date/) [names](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/sony-xperia-tx-hands-on/) for the purposes of carrier branding, or to distinguish a global GSM model from its US bound LTE sibling. Sony seems to be trying for a record though, with the [Xperia T](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/sony-xperia-t-review-a-new-4-5-inch-smartphone-flagship-that-is/) adding a _fourth_ rebranding. The company's latest flagship is landing on AT&T here in the US as the [Xperia TL](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/01/sony-xperia-tl-att-4g-lte-james-bond/). At an event today in NYC the carrier broke out the curved 4.6-inch LTE Android device and we took the opportunity to give it yet another chance to impress us, after falling short of "wow" it's first few times around the block.
Back at IFA 2012, when we first got up close and personal with Sony's latest flagship, we were left feeling rather unimpressed and things haven't changed. The fit and finish of the TL just doesn't live up to the big boy breeches of its high-end ilk. Yes, it feels good in the hand, owed in part to that matte plastic back and subtle arc S-like curve, but the materials feel cheap. Thankfully, that sentiment doesn't spill over into its performance, as the 1.5GHz dual-core S4 powering the device does an admirable job keeping navigation brisk.
With a 720p HD Reality display powered by the outfit's Mobile BRAVIA Engine, you'd expect superb readability from the handset, especially in the dim light of this event. Though colors on the panel are bright and viewing angles seem to hold up fairly well, we did take issue with its overall brightness. Even pumped up to max, the screen just seemed a bit too dark for our tastes.
As with all things carrier-branded, this one lands with a host of AT&T apps onboard alongside three of Sony's own like Media, Album and Walkman. The build of Android on the device is still Ice Cream Sandwich with a light skin, but we were assured an upgrade to Jelly Bean is forthcoming and, given the company's track record, we're inclined to believe it. This official Bond Android phone's targeted for a holiday season release, so sit tight if you want to go all in on this Xperia. Check out the brief video tour after the break.
