Sony coats Xperia P in 24-carat gold, keeps up tradition of so-so phones in luxury shells
Outside of [custom projects](http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/13/pharrell-tires-of-gilded-blackberry-targets-iphone-next/), the cardinal rule for draping phones in [exotic materials](http://www.engadget.com/tag/mobile,gold/) is that they must never, ever be truly high end devices: at best, they should involve [mid-tier hardware](http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/nokia-oro-is-covered-with-18ct-gold-on-the-outside-tinged-with/) that could be eclipsed by a garden-variety smartphone at a fraction of the price. Sony's maintaining that all too time-honored tradition by producing a gold-coated, 24-carat version of... the [Xperia P](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/03/sony-xperia-p-review/). Yes, rather than spruce up a flagship like the James Bond-approved [Xperia T](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/sony-xperia-t-review-a-new-4-5-inch-smartphone-flagship-that-is/), Sony has instead given the luxury treatment to a smartphone with a strictly middling 4-inch display and dual-core 1GHz processor. In fairness, the company sees this as an experiment rather than a [Vertu-like](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/nokia-finishes-offloading-vertu-with-android-switch-rumored/) business model, with the intent strictly to emphasize the unibody design. A maximum 15 have been built as a result -- and rather than count on impulse purchases from oligarchs, Sony hints that it's offering at least some of its gold Xperia P stock to followers on Facebook. As long as there's no pretenses of living the high life with what's really a very ordinary phone underneath, we're satisfied.

BlackBerry 10 Preview Looks Positive
[![](http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/Z3lrM12WRSTB-YMHIvL8XX1qU4w/1/di)](http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/Z3lrM12WRSTB-YMHIvL8XX1qU4w/1/da)
An anonymous reader writes "The Register has a BlackBerry 10 preview up. They say, 'BlackBerry users have a love-hate relationship with their phones. The devices were often forced upon users rather than chosen. At the same time, the handhelds were the most usable and useful communications gadgets you could put in your pocket.' The preview is surprisingly positive, and it goes on to look at BB10's Hub/notifications feature, which they call 'utilitarian' and efficient compared to Windows Phones, which are more about 'style and novelty' whilst being 'a bit limiting.' BlackBerry's implementation may actually improve the system, rather than detracting from it. With BlackBerry providing a QT environment (compatible with Sailfish, which we discussed earlier) and RIM having managed to maintain BB's 3rd place in the mobile OS market, there may a chance for real three-way competition between QT, Android and iOS in the mobile market."

Samsung 'Baffin' pops up in FCC; reportedly mixes 5-inch WVGA display, quad-core CPU
Apparently feeling we were running low on [Galaxy smartphones](http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsung,galaxy/) after the current lineup of Galaxy S III, [Galaxy S III mini](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-mini-launch/) and Galaxy Note II, Samsung's SHV-E270L just made the FCC rounds and is rumored to be next in line. Flashing its codename "Baffin" in the documents, this device does not seem destined for an appearance beyond Korean borders, but a unique blend of specs and rumors that it will arrive as the "Galaxy Grand" continue to intrigue. Listed as an LTE phone in the Bluetooth database, and appearing in GLBenchmark reporting a 1.4GHz (possibly quad-core) CPU like the Galaxy S III, but with a much lower 800x480 WVGA display. According to a report from Korea's _Money Today_, the idea is to create a device for older customers that's easier to read with bigger icons and letters on its large 5-inch low res screen (as opposed to the 5-inch 1080p pixel density monsters we're [now accustomed to](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/htc-droid-dna-review/)), with a quad-core CPU pushing Android 4.1 and its [Smart Stay](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/samsung-s-voice-smartstay-galaxy-siii/) features plus a 2,100mAh battery. We're not sure if it will increase your parent's scores in _Fruit Ninja_, but vision-challenged KT, LG U+ and SK Telecom customers may have an interesting decision to make very soon.

Apple asks court to include Galaxy S III with Jelly Bean, Galaxy Note II and four more devices in lawsuit
As usual, Apple though Friday night on a holiday weekend was the perfect time to push some more paper through in its [ongoing patent lawsuit against Samsung](http://www.engadget.com/tag/applevsamsung/). According to Florian Mueller of _FOSS Patents_, after [Samsung asked to add the latest iPads, iPhones and iPod touches to its list of claims](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/21/samsung-apple-adds-ipadmini/) and the court approved the addition of the [iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/court-approves-more-devices-in-apple-v-samsung/), Apple is trying to put six more devices on the list. Listed in the motion are the Galaxy S III running Android Jelly Bean (but not Jelly Bean itself), Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Rugby Pro and Galaxy S III mini. As usual, the case will proceed, we'll wait to hear if these requests are approved by the court while iThings and Galaxys alike continue to fly off the shelves. Given the season, for now it's time to be thankful we're not one of the lawyers spending their day working on this. That leaves us plenty of time for more interesting activities, like hand-to-hand combat against fellow shoppers for the right to purchase slightly discounted items.

Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II sneakily goes up for sale at Verizon
When a carrier says it will ship a phone in the "coming weeks," there's usually a certain ritual involved: after weeks of waiting, we get a more definitive press release nailing down the ship date and price. Verizon isn't big on tradition, it seems. Just as many Americans settled down for Thanksgiving, the Samsung [Galaxy Stratosphere II](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/12/samsung-stratosphere-ii/) popped up for sale at Verizon's web store. The Android QWERTY slider is selling at its promised $130 contract price and costs $450 up front; about the only surprise left for the mid-range messaging phone is out-of-the-box [Isis support](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/22/isis-nfc-payments-go-live-in-austin-and-salt-lake-city/) for NFC-based mobile payments. There's talk at _Android Central_ of customers who've already managed to snag the Stratosphere II at retail, although the timing is such that most Americans won't see one first-hand until they're recovering from a food coma.

Nokia Transit updated with segmented maps, advance routing on Windows Phone and Symbian
Nokia still has a ways to go before directions in Nokia Transit (also known as [Nokia Transport](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/13/nokia-transport-goes-official-public-transport-departure-times/)) are on par with [Google's](http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/06/google-maps-transit-navigation-beta-for-android-hands-on-video/), but the Finnish crew is clearly on the right track with a fresh update to its Windows Phone and Symbian apps. Travelers now see segmented route maps that provide a closer look at key points in the trip as well as more focused directions at those crucial moments. The app is that much more savvy about travel times, as well -- the forward-thinking can at last plan trips days in advance, and there's new options for relative arrival times as well as a simplified destination history. Symbian even gets its own specific update with long-overdue support for route updates in-app, rather than through upgrading the app itself. Lumia owners on [Windows Phone 8](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-review/) devices can get the spruced-up version of Transit or Transport today as a regular update; Symbian and Windows Phone 7 users willing to live on the edge can get roughly equivalent betas at the same time.

Samsung's SCH-W2013 is a quad-core, dual-screen flip phone, designed for Jackie Chan
It's been almost a year since the ridiculously expensive [SCH-W999](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/03/samsungs-two-faced-sch-w999-android-plays-the-dual-core-dual-s/) launched on China Telecom, so it's about time for Samsung to come up with yet another dual-screen flip phone to lure folks with too much money. Launched in conjunction with a big charity concert (again) earlier today is the SCH-W2013, a 1.4GHz quad-core (likely an [Exynos 4412](http://engadget.com/tag/Exynos4412)) device with Android 4.0 and dual-3.7-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED touchscreens. On top of that there's 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD expansion of up to 64GB, 1,850mAh of battery juice, an eight-megapixel main imager plus a whopping 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. As with many flagship devices on China Telecom, the W2013 comes with dual-SIM support: one for CDMA2000 800/1900 and the other for GSM 900/1800/1900. The damage? Well, there's nothing official yet, but it's believed to be somewhere between ¥18,000 ($2,900) and ¥20,000 ($3,210). After all, it ain't cheap to hire Jackie Chan (_and_ he also got given a W2013 at the concert).

Penurious Penguin writes "Privacy-oriented search-engine and Google-rival, DuckDuckGo, is contending possible anti-competitiveness on the part of Google. MIT graduate and founder of DuckDuckGo, Gabriel Weinberg, cites several examples; his company's disadvantages in the Android mobile OS; and browsers, which in Firefox requires only a single step to set DuckDuckGo as the default search -- while doing so in Chrome requires five. Weinberg also questions the domain duck.com, which he offered to purchase before it was acquired by Google. His offer was declined and duck.com now directs to Google's homepage. Weinberg isn't the first to make similar claims; there was scroogle.org, which earlier this year, permanently shut down after repeated compatibility issues with Google's algorithms. Whatever the legitimacy of these claims, there certainly seems a growing market for people interested in privacy and objective searches -- avoiding profiled search-results, a.k.a. 'filter bubbles.'"

Sharp Cocorobo vacuum gets new Android app, lets you control it from afar
Perhaps in response to iRobot's recent [Wireless Command Center](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/19/roomba-790s-wireless-command-center-lets-you-obliterate-dirt-fr/), Sharp has introduced a new Android app that lets you remotely control [the company's little Cocorobo](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/08/sharp-cocorobo-vacuum-avoids-obstacles-embraces-small-talk/) while you're _out of the house_. You can map out your floor plan so that it'll know what objects to avoid, specify cleaning patterns and even receive carpet-view photos so you can admire the robot vacuum's handiwork. If you attach an optional Navi controller to its USB port, you can even use the app to control other Sharp devices like televisions, air conditioning systems and LED lights. Sharp also introduced a smaller version of the Cocorobo, the RX-V60, which measures about 4.7cm less than the original. Designed to fit in tighter spaces, the RX-V60 will be available in Japan for 75,000 yen ($900) starting December 13th. Check out the video after the break to peek at the new smartphone app and miniaturized vacuum 'bot.

Samsung has already begun delivery of Android 4.1 for the [Galaxy Note 10.1](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review/) in [some parts of the world](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/08/note-10-1-jelly-bean-germany/), but in a move that'll no doubt add to the anticipation, the company has now revealed Premium Suite as an accompaniment to the OS upgrade. Along with Jelly Bean, users can expect greater Multi Window functionality, which brings the ability to open up to 16 apps at a time, each which can be moved, resized and pinned to remain on top. Samsung's Air View is also incorporated within Premium Suite, which allows users to preview appointments, emails, video and the like by hovering the S Pen above the screen. Not to stop there, Samsung is also upping the ante with new additions such as Easy Clip, Quick Command, Photo Note, Paper Artist and an enhanced S Note app. No definitive timeline is known for Samsung's rollout of Premium Suite and Android 4.1, although it's now clear that "[soon](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/24/samsung-rolling-jelly-bean-toward-most-of-its-smartphone-tablet/)" can't come quickly enough. In the meantime, be sure to hop the break to preview all the new features that are on deck.

Disney Research robot plays catch and juggles with humans, won't replace their parents (video)
It's entirely possible for [robots to juggle](http://www.engadget.com/tag/robots,juggling/) or play catch. They've usually been relegated to playing with their own kind, however, which is as good an excuse as any for [Disney Research](http://www.engadget.com/tag/DisneyResearch/) to experiment with a ball-tossing robot tailored to games with humans. The [animatronic](http://www.engadget.com/tag/animatronic/) creation uses a depth-aware motion camera -- there's conflicting mentions of using both the Microsoft [Kinect](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kinect/) and ASUS' [Xtion Pro Live](http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/18/asus-updates-xtion-pro-motion-sensor-makes-it-even-more-like-ki/) that we're hoping to sort out -- to track any mid-air balls as well as throw them back to a human participant. Disney's robot does more than just move the robot's arm to account for imperfect tosses, too, as it knows to feign a dejected look after a botched reception. The company suggests that its invention would ideally bring two-way interaction to theme parks, so it's more likely to show up at Disneyland before it stands in for a parent in the backyard. It's just as well; when the [Robopocalypse](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Robopocalypse/) comes, the last thing we'll want at home is a machine that can toss grenades.

Google Now awarded Popular Science's Innovation of the Year
Popular Science has given [Google Now](http://engadget.com/tag/googlenow) its "Innovation of the Year" award, putting it alongside past winners like the [Large Hadron Collider](http://engadget.com/tag/largehadroncollider), the [Toyota Prius](http://engadget.com/tag/toyotaprius) and the [Mars Curiosity Rover](http://engadget.com/tag/marscuriosityrover). It's august company to be sure, and the reasoning behind the decision is that it's "the first virtual assistant that truly anticipates your needs." The service has grown quite a bit since [its initial launch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/27/google-revamps-search-integration-in-android-4-1-jellybean/) -- from personalized recommendations to [public safety alerts](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/google-now-emergency-alerts-sports-movies/) and the addition of a [pedometer](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/google-now-slips-in-a-pedometer-card/), it seems that these are early days yet for the context- and location-aware app. Hit the Android G+ source link to read a Q&A between PopSci and part of the Google Now team to get some behind-the-scenes insight of the award-winning service.

Rockstar Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for Mobile

Google plans to fix an Android networking bug... after 2.5 years
It's fair to say that some bugs take awhile to fix, and a public schedule isn't always an option; [HTC knows this well](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/03/htc-acknowledges-wifi-security-flaw-says-it-deliberately-kept-i/). Still, Google may be pushing the limits with the solution for a longstanding Android bug that prevents resolving hostnames on some WiFi networks without using the full domain. The company has officially committed to providing a patch -- 2 years, 6 months and 23 days after the bug was first reported on April 29th, 2010. Google explains that the "next major release" after [Android 4.2](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/google-bumps-android-to-4-2-keeps-jelly-bean-moniker/) should hold the remedy, and claims that a mix of "prioritization and resources" prevented the team from sorting things out between Android 2.1 and now. We'll take Google's word for it, although the vow won't be much comfort for anyone who's still holding on to that original [HTC Desire](http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/01/htc-desire-review/) and can't upgrade. At least the Mountain View team won't have to deal with any [17-year-old security flaws](http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/05/ancient-dos-bug-gets-squashed/).

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City hijacking Android and iOS on December 6th for $5
Following the [footsteps of its predecessor](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/06/grand-theft-auto-iii-anniversary-edition-for-ios-and-android-exa/), _Grand Theft Auto: Vice City_ is making its way to Android and iOS. [Rockstar](http://www.engadget.com/tag/rockstargames/) announced today that a special 10th Anniversary Edition of the open world _Scarface_ / _Miami Vice_ inspired sim will be hitting the two popular mobile platforms on December 6th for $5. This spiffed-up mobile port includes updated character models, enhanced lighting effects, improved targeting and fully customizable control options. Technical upgrades aside, we caution not to drive directly against the sun while riding a motorcycle within the game; it nearly blinded us in the original console version, so we can only imagine how harsh it will be on your fancy high-res display. Don't say that we didn't warn you. Move past the break for a complete list of supported devices.

YouTube's biggest sports deal so far will bring live NBA D-League games starting Friday
This summer [YouTube](http://www.engadget.com/tag/youtube,olympics/) made its biggest advance into sports by picking up [rights to live stream the Olympics in various countries](http://www.engadget.com/tag/youtube,olympics/), but now it has gained a domestic foothold by partnering with the [NBA](http://www.engadget.com/tag/nba/) to air D-League games. While the world isn't exactly beating down the doors to watch minor league basketball, this is YouTube's biggest pro sports deal so far. Neither the NBA nor Google will say how much the rights cost for it to air 350 or so of the league's 400 games, but we wouldn't expect to see YouTube [bids for Monday Night Football](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/08/espns-new-monday-night-football-deal-includes-3d-broadcasts/). The NBA has long been a YouTube partner in other deals, and there were [rumors last year](http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/23/youtube-says-its-in-talks-to-stream-nhl-nba-games-nhl-says-it/) that they were considering a deal for games, although right now Google seems to have its eye on ESPN3 instead of ESPN and will focus on [niche sports](http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/20/youtube-nabs-live-sports-streaming-rights/) and complementary programming. If you're a fan of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants or just trying to catch a peek at the next Jeremy Lin before everyone else, the broadcasts start Friday night (in HD) with four games. They're also accessible via team and league websites, as archived VOD on YouTube, through mobile apps for iOS and Android or, of course, on TV when they air on NBA TV and CBS Sports Network.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with LTE now available at Verizon, $500 sans contract
Been clamoring for a Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1 with LTE? While you may have known about [Sprint's variant](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-10-1-with-4g-lte-hits-sprint-on-november-11/) which launched 10 days ago, Verizon is now laying claim to the tablet as well. Big Red's model will cost you a cool $500 ($150 than its [7-inch sibling](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-7-0-packing-4g-lte-comes-to-verizon-august-17th/)) with "month-to-month service" that'll run you between $30 for 4GB of data to $60 for 10GB. Details on the slate's internals are light, but you can expect it to be loaded with Android 4.0 and 8GB of flash storage (expandable to 64GB via microSD) -- whether this one has the beefed-up [1.5GHz dual-core CPU](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/01/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-10-1-with-4g-lte-hits-sprint-on-november-11/) like Sprint's remains to be seen, but it is 50 dollars less. Verizon's listing the 10-incher as being ready to ship by the 26th, so hit up the source links below if it's up your alley.

Google brings indoor maps to desktop web browsers
It may not be quite as practical as the [mobile version](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/29/google-maps-6-0-hits-android-adds-indoor-navigation-for-retail/) if you find yourself lost in the mall this holiday season, but those looking to plan their shopping route ahead of time can now finally take advantage of Google's indoor maps in their desktop web browser. That new addition, just rolled out today, does come with a bit of a catch, though: the desktop version of indoor maps is only offering the main floor of buildings for the time being, with no word yet on when the ability to view additional levels will be added (something that can currently be done in the Android app). Of course, the availability of indoor maps is still quite a bit more limited than some of Google's other map offerings, but it does now include over 10,000 floor plans in a number of different countries.

Engadget Mobile Podcast 158 - 11.21.2012
Every once in a great while there comes a phone that the Engadget Mobile Podcasters are compelled to talk about for the better part of an hour. OK, we lied: that happens at least once a month, but the _phone du jour_ this time is a seriously hot little number. The Droid DNA takes center stage in the mobile amphitheater as Myriam and Brad dissect its deepest, darkest genetic code. We wouldn't leave the rest of this week's devices out, of course: a small army of powerful handsets all get their fair share of the limelight, just as they always do on these digital airwaves.

PSA: HTC Droid DNA now available from Verizon
What are we thankful for on the day before Thanksgiving? How about the glut of great smartphones? Phones like [HTC's Droid DNA](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/16/htc-droid-dna-review/), on sale today over at Verizon. $200 (with the obligatory two-year contract) will get you a gorgeous five-inch 1080p display, a quad-core processor, NFC and some Android Jelly Bean action. The battery life leaves a bit to be desired, however, though it'll get you through the amount of time required to cook a 20 pound turkey, at least.

Jolla shows off Sailfish mobile OS in official video, pushes speed, multitasking
[As promised](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/jolla-confirms-first-sailfish-os-demo-due-november-21st/), Jolla has shown off its newly launched Sailfish OS today, and said that UI will be all about speed and multitasking, while also cutting down on the finger dancing required to use it. The experience will start from the homescreen, where users will be able to control music playback or end a call using a "pulley" menu system without needing to open the respective apps. The Finnish startup also said that "many" Android apps would run on Sailfish handsets without modification, though a simple port would be required for best operation. [Jolla](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/02/jolla-resuscitates-meego-with-sailfish-os-plans-to-show-off-n/) foresees the software running not only smartphones from hardware players like [new partner](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/21/jolla-launches-sailfish-os/) ST-Ericsson, but also tablets, smart TVs and in-car systems, for instance. To see it for yourself, check out the official video after the break.

Comcast Xfinity TV Player update adds downloads for offline viewing on iOS, Android
Comcast has brought video on-demand streaming to subscriber's mobile devices since [early last year](http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/01/xfinity-tv-for-ipad-now-streaming-video-for-select-networks-in/), but now an update has added the option to download (some) content for offline viewing. Arriving simultaneously on iOS and Android, the [Xfinity TV Player](http://www.engadget.com/tag/xfinitytvplayer/) apps support downloads from premium channels Showtime (which was also one of the first up for streaming when that launched), Starz, Encore and MoviePlex. We downloaded the app on both platforms and found it to work in similar fashion, assuming you're already logged in (and have any of those channels in your package) the option to download is right next to the usual stream button with options available for two different levels of picture quality. The high quality option wasn't quite HD quality to our eyes, but certainly passable for viewing on a flight or subway. We did run into a hiccup on Android however, with an "unknown error" stopping us from downloading files to our Galaxy S II running ICS. If there were more content available it would be a decent no-additional-hardware-needed matchup for solutions like TiVo's [Stream](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/tivo-stream-transcoder-review/) or DirecTV's [Nomad](http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/06/directv-nomad-is-ready-to-launch-transcodes-dvred-shows-for-mob/), while we wait for that you can get a taste of the apps for each platform at the source links.

Amazon Appstore update gives its UI a facelift and fixes a list of annoying bugs
The [Amazon Appstore](http://www.engadget.com/tag/amazonappstore/) updated to version 4.3.14.3C today, mending an account switching logout issue plaguing Android 4.2 users. Other new software highlights include: long press removal of applications from My Apps, a battery drain bug fix and a [Kindle Fire HD](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/19/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-8.9-review/) inspired makeover for the Appstore's UI. Don't have Amazon's alternative to [Google Play](http://www.engadget.com/tag/googleplay/), but would like to give it a spin?
