Ask Engadget: best Android PMP?

[![][1] ][2]

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's [Ask Engadget][3] inquiry is from Livebriand who wants the Android equivalent of an iPod Touch. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at **_ask [at] engadget [dawt] com_**.

> "What would be the best Android PMP (basically, an Android iPod Touch) to get? I don't want a data plan and I'm normally within WiFi, so I just want to run apps and surf the internet from it. The best thing I've found so far is the Galaxy Player, but that's only got Gingerbread. What suggestions do you guys have?"

If we're honest, we're not sure if he'd just be better off with a small tablet, but his wish is our command. A PMP-class device that runs Honeycomb or better, that's a more attractive prospect than the Gingerbread-running Galaxy Player? Does such a device exist, or would it be better just to get the ROMs out and pimp one of Samsung's devices that way? You know the answers dear friends, don't let us down.

T-Mobile's next myTouch to come from Huawei?

[![][1] ][2]

The Magenta carrier's pumped out its fair share of [myTouch][3] handsets in the past months, and we can't blame you if you're confused by the fact that different OEMs have had their turn making the devices. Now, if a report by _PocketNow_ is to be believed, the next phone maker in line is the same one that brought you that [T-Mobile Springboard][4]. And, if we take into consideration [Huawei's recent push][5] towards the US market, it wouldn't surprise us to see T-Mo's future myTouch lineup coming from the Chinese outfit. Allegedly, the device(s) will come in two Gingerbread-packing flavors, one of which is said to be sporting physical QWERTY keys -- [_a la_ the 4G Slide][6]. While we know some of you are ready to part ways with the [ol' timer 3G variant][7], it may be a while before the purported U8680 and U8730 are the real deal. Good news is [MWC][8] isn't exactly giving you a shortage of options.

How Steve Jobs Patent-Trolled Bill Gates

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

theodp writes "Apple, which is currently waging IP war on Android vendors, is no stranger to patent trolling. Citing the Steve Jobs bio, Forbes' Eric Jackson recalls how Steve Jobs used patents to get Bill Gates to make a 1997 investment in Apple. Recalled Jobs: 'Microsoft was walking over Apple's patents. I said [to Gates], "If we kept up our lawsuits, a few years from now we could win a billion-dollar patent suit. You know it, and I know it. But Apple's not going to survive that long if we're at war. I know that. So let's figure out how to settle this right away. All I need is a commitment that Microsoft will keep developing for the Mac and an investment by Microsoft in Apple so it has a stake in our success.' Next thing you know, BillG was lording over Jobs at Macworld Boston, as the pair announced the $150 million investment that breathed new life into then-struggling Apple. So, does Gates deserve any credit for helping create the world's most valuable company?"

ASUS claims it may be among first to get Android 5.0, confirms Jelly Bean moniker

[![][1]][2]

We've seen some pretty incredible [smartphones][3] and technologies at [MWC][4], but it goes without saying that one of the hottest topics at the show was Android, and speculation over the release and alias of its next-gen operating system. Based on Google's update schedule, it's within reason to expect [Android 5.0][5] to hit within the next year -- but which popular confection will bear the honor or representing the latest OS flavor? There's been little doubt that the jelly bean will fill that role, and now [ASUS][6] has confirmed to TechRadar not only that delectable moniker -- Jelly Bean -- but also that the company will likely be among the first to get the new OS. That claim came from VP Benson Lin, who said "Asus is very close to Google, so once they have Android 5.0 I think there will be a high possibility that we will be the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update." So, there you have it. Now go get to scooping up every variation of the Je!!y 8ean domain.

Smartphones spread out: Pew says 46 percent of US adults now own one

[![Smartphones spread out: Pew says 46 percent of US adults now own one (or maybe two) pe][1] ][2]

Our master plan is slowly working, and soon every man and woman in our great nation will own a smartphone. Pew Research Center reports that just under half of adult Americans, or 46 percent, own smartphones currently, meaning that smartphone owners now outnumber their feature phone counterparts by five percent. Pew polled multiple demographics to get its numbers, and there was growth across the board over the last nine months. Of particular interest is the rise in ownership in the study's lowest income demographic -- under $30,000 a year -- which spiked 12 percent to 34 percent. Additionally, it showed that Android and [Apple][3] are neck and neck, with 20 and 19 percent market share of mobile owners, respectively, and Blackberry ownership declined from ten percent to six percent. The largest growth came from the 18-24 age group, up 18 to 67 percent. (Who do you think is doing all that checking in on [Foursquare][4]?). Of course, you know what they say about statistics, so head on down to the source for a full accounting and form your own opinion of what they mean.

YouTube Android app update brings HD video streaming to 'capable' 2.2+ devices

[![][1] ][2]

Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich Android-running hardware has had access to HD resolution [YouTube][3] streams since launch (as seen above), but an update to the app that rolled out yesterday finally brings HD to some devices running Froyo or Gingerbread. The catch is that YouTube HD res won't work on every Android 2.2 or 2.3 phone or tablet, as we're told it is set dynamically based on screen size and resolution. Another quirk is that some devices still won't install the updated version directly from the Market, like our Epic 4G Touch. Still, assuming you can snag the update -- through official or unofficial means -- if you have the pixels to spare you should see upgraded video quality from now on.

ITC to review its decision on Microsoft, Motorola patent case

[![][1] ][2]

Remember [back in December][3] when the International Trade Commission ruled on a [Microsoft complaint from 2010][4] that Motorola's Android products infringed on seven of its patents, siding with Microsoft initially on one of them? Since that's so hard to forget, it probably comes as no surprise to hear that the ITC announced today it would review the decision in part, as Motorola noted in its press release at the time. Don't expect a final ruling for another month or so (we'd keep that NFL Draft window clear if we were you), but if you're looking for details, _FOSSPatents_ has the notes on which segments are under review. Don't worry if you miss a step though, we'll be sure to let you know once it's all over (hint: it will never, ever be over.)

[Splashtop][3] is one of the premier remote desktop apps out there and, at CES, we got a [pretty sweet demo][4] of it pushing full screen games and HD video from a Windows 7 PC to a Tegra 3 tablet. Now that version (THD) is available for download in the Android Market for $6.99. Of course, you'll need a [Tegra 3][5] slate running [Ice Cream Sandwich][6] to take advantage, while playing [_Skyrim_][7] in full screen has the added requirement of PC sporting a GeForce GPU. Once you've gotten those basic requirements out of the way you'll still want to make sure you've got a solid and quick wireless connection -- all the processing power in the world won't be able to compensate for a lack of bandwidth. Check out the video after the break to see it in action and hit up the source link to buy it yourself.

LG's MWC 2012 booth tour (video)

[![][1] ][2]

MWC's over for this year, but while all those HDTVs, tethered phones and Android costumes are lovingly stored for the next big tech event, we reckon you need to _feel_ what the biggest mobile event of the year encompasses. So we braved another packed product booth to give you a taste of what the week's been like. LG's getting the treatment this time, with visits to the [Optimus Vu][3], [Optimus 4X HD][4] and the [Optimus 3D Max][5]. Move on after the break for the full guided tour.

HTC unveils new APIs, opens Beats, lockscreen and more to devs

[![HTC][1] ][2]

[APIs][3], as essential as they are to our modern computing experience, aren't the sort of thing we usually get too excited about. HTC is walking away from [Mobile World Congress][4] having announced four new application interfaces though, that have piqued our interest. First up, and the most spotlight hogging of the bunch, is [Beats][5]. Soon enough any music app, game or what-have-you will be able to take advantage of the bass-boosting software equalizer. Perhaps more interesting, if a little less headline grabbing, is the ability to integrate your app with the Sense lockscreen -- a feature we'd love to see come to stock Android. Now lockscreen widgets wont be limited to Google's own music app... so long as you've got an HTC. The manufacturer is also prepping a [MediaLink][6] API for streaming content over wireless HDMI. Now the [One X][7] is looking even better than before, huh?

SugarSync for Android updated, adds enhanced sharing and on-the-go file management

[![SugarSync for Android updated, adds enhanced sharing and on-the-go file management][1] ][2]

Not long after handing its Android application a [video-friendly refresh][3], SugarSync's back with more updated goodies. Now, the [sweet Dropbox adversary][4] is stuffing version 3.5.1 with some productivity and social-driven bits. The rejuvenated app, which won't ask anything of your wallet, is boosting its sharing features by allowing you to handout contacts, files and folders via [Zuck's social network][5] and that [famed 140-character box][6]. Facebook and Twitter's integration doesn't stop there, SugarSync's letting anyone grab 500MB of extra storage at no cost by referring other humans through the aforementioned sites. Another new feature is the on-the-fly file management, which essentially allows you to copy, move and delete any of your docs while you're on the go. Eager to give it a try? It's up for grabs at the source link below or you can get it directly from your Big G-approved device.

Distro Issue 30 brings you 'The Best of Mobile World Congress 2012'

[![Distro Issue 30 brings you 'The Best of Mobile World Congress 2012'][1] ][2]

While a handful of Engadget editors braved the show floor in Barcelona, we here at [Distro][3] HQ were busy trying to keep pace with the insane amount of news coming out of [Mobile World Congress 2012][4]. Fittingly, issue 30 of our fine weekly is packed to the rafters with the best and latest in mobile technology. Also in this issue, Tim Stevens gives us his detailed impressions of Microsoft's Windows 8 consumer preview; we pick apart the long-awaited refresh of BlackBerry PlayBook OS; and Dante Cesa dives into Razer's first gaming laptop, the Blade. Plus, we grill Mobile Burn founder Michael Oryl for the Distro Q&A; Donald Melanson offers his latest reading recommendations; we get real for IRL; and Box Brown reveals a handful of Siri Easter eggs for Last Word.

Unofficial VLC beta hits Android, no video format is safe

[![][1]][2][VLC][3] is the Swiss Army knife (nope, not you [Perian][4]) of media players and it has never baulked at any of the increasingly weird and wonderful formats we've thrown at it -- which is good because now it's available on Android. The unsupported, unofficial beta by user adridu59 is tailored to run on selected Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich handsets. It's available to grab from the source link, with the caveat that as an unofficial build, it'll require a little bit of tinkering at your end

BlackBerry phones could get rhythm-to-unlock, like dun-da-da-dun-dun

[![][1] ][2]

Who needs [face unlock][3] when you could just tap out a private ditty on your smartphone? Maybe you'd risk giving away your credentials to any vaguely rhythmic phone thief within ten feet, but RIM's engineers have a patent-approved answer to that: Rather than just sensing rhythm, they reckon a phone's accelerometer could also detect the magnitude and location of each tap, which would make it harder for eavesdroppers to mimic. Just don't pick something too syncopated -- not unless you're [this guy][4].

Kodak agrees to sell Gallery online photo service to Shutterfly for $24 million

[![][1] ][2]

Remember that Kodak Photo Gallery online picture service that [we didn't use][3]? It appears that years of shipping packed-in with the company's cameras have netted it some 75 million users, making it an asset that [now-bankrupt Kodak][4] has agreed to sell off to Shutterfly for $23.8 million. The deal isn't quite done yet, with Shutterfly's offer entered as a stalking horse bid while other buyers may also submit proposals before the process is targeted to close in the spring. This is all a part of Kodak's pivot [away from digital cameras][5] and related products as it focuses on enterprise services and desktop printers instead. Under the current agreement, current gallery customers uncomfortable with being shipped off to Shutterfly will be able to opt out and either download their stored pics or buy them on DVDs. Otherwise, their accounts will be transferred in a way that is "preserved, and protected" -- that is to say, almost entirely unlike [the way they're handled on iOS and Android][6].

Archos unveils 7-inch Child Pad slate: $129, Ice Cream Sandwich on board

[![Archos unveils 7-inch Child Pad slate: $129, Ice Cream Sandwich on board][1] ][2]

We know you've already added the [Fisher Price DVR][3] to the list of gadgets that may withstand the physical trauma your kid's about to put it through. But how does an ICS-equipped, 7-inch slate with parental controls sound? Dubbed Child Pad, this sticky finger-friendly tab isn't just flaunting the fact it's tasting [Android's freshest treat][4] before [most of you][5], it's doing so with a rather modest 1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM. In theory, that should be enough to handle your little one's multitouch doings. Speaking of, Archos is pairing up the $129 machine with access to the [AppLibs][6] Kids App Store, which offers a portfolio of over 10,000 games, books and apps. Unfortunately, there's no word on what kind of ports or internal storage the Child Pad's packing. The good news is [Archos][7] isn't saying you need to be in first grade to use it, so feel free to grab one for yourself (or your kid) when it hits shelves at the end of the month.

Storage Options intros Scroll Extreme, says it's 'world's most powerful tablet under £200'

[![Storage Options intros Scroll Extreme, says it's 'world's most powerful tablet under £200'][1] ][2]

Sure, [CES][3] and [MWC][4] brought along a plethora of [Ice Cream Sandwich][5] slates this year. So what sort of harm can adding one more to the pile do -- especially if it claims to be the most powerful sub-£200 Android slab on the globe. Enter Storage Option's Scroll Extreme, which sports a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display, 1.2GHz Cortex A8 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage with an option to expand via microSD. Also included in the £189.99 ($303) deal are front 0.3 and 2-megapixel rear shooters, as well as allowing you to output regular and 3D content (because it knows you'll only watch [Hugo][6] on the big screen). It's also worth mentioning that your app needs have to be fulfilled by the SlideMe store (we don't blame you if you're unfamiliar), since this beast lacks the right credentials to access the Android Market. If you're brave enough to put its claims to the test, you'll have to wait until April and live in the UK to do so. In the meantime, you can flip through the glammy press shots below to catch all of its revealing angles.

BlackBerry 9320 leaks out, looks like every other Curve

[![BlackBerry 9320 leaks out, looks like every other Curve][1] ][2]

If you thought [RIM's decline][3] would inject a need to give its handsets a major makeover, think again. The folks from _BGR_ have smudged their fingertips all over an India-bound BlackBerry device and, well, it shamelessly resembles just about [every member][4] of the [Curve][5] family. The purported 9320 is said to come sporting [OS 7.1][6] at its core, along with a 2.44-inch, 320 x 240 qVGA+ display, 512MB of RAM as well as a 3.2-megapixel rear shooter. Allegedly, the BlackBerry is also rocking a BBM button on its left spine, which should come in handy to those who love some Berry-specific instant messaging. Word is the Curve 9320 will be ready to hit the streets next month for around 12,000 Rupees (or around $245). Hopefully by then you haven't spent your cash on one of those shiny new talkers [we saw in Barcelona][7].

NSA Publishes Blueprint For Top Secret Android Phone

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

mask.of.sanity writes "The National Security Agency has designed a super-secure Android phone from commercial parts, and released the blueprints(Pdf) to the public. The doubly-encrypted phone, dubbed Fishbowl, was designed to be secure enough to handle top secret phone calls yet be as easy to use and cheap to build as commercial handsets. One hundred US government staff are using the phones under a pilot which is part of a wider project to redesign communication platforms used in classified conversations."

Android and iOS expose your photos to third party apps, promise fixes

[![Oops][1] ][2]

2012 is still young, yet it's already shaping up to be a bad year for privacy and security on the mobile front. Apple found itself embroiled in a bit of a brouhaha over the [iPhone address book][3] and an app called _Path_. And, of course, Google was put under the microscope when mobile Safari was found to have a [security flaw][4] that its mobile ads were exploiting. Then, earlier this week, it was discovered that granting iOS apps access to your location could also expose your photos. Now it's been discovered that Android also exposes your images, though, it's doing so without asking for any permissions at all. While Apple was masking photo access with other permissions, Google is simply leaving your pics vulnerable as a part of a design quirk that came from the OS's reliance on microSD cards. Both companies have acknowledged the flaws and have said they're currently working on fixes. We're just hoping things start to quiet down soon, though -- our mobile operating systems are running out of personal data to expose. Check out the source links for more details.

Google Wallet Android app updated, headed to 'at least' ten more Sprint phones this year

[![][1] ][2]

Google may have had to deal with some [less][3]-[than][4]-[positive][5] [Google Wallet][6] news last month, but it was able to announce some progress of a different sort in the past couple of days. The first is an update to the Android app, which adds the ability to handle PO Boxes for prepaid card top-ups, along with a number of other fixes and improvements. The second, more significant news comes out of Mobile World Congress, where Google Wallet and Payments VP Osama Bedier revealed that the mobile payment service would be heading to "at least 10 additional phones" on Sprint this year -- no word on those specific phones, though. Details on any expansion plans beyond that also remain a bit light, with Bedier only saying that Google remains in talks with other carriers and device manufactures.

NSA builds own model of Android phone, wants you to do the same

[![][1] ][2]

The [NSA][3] decided it wanted to have its own go at producing a secure [Android][4] smartphone that could encrypt [communications][5] to levels necessary for national security. Project "Fishbowl" constructed 100 handsets from off-the-shelf components that were secure enough that staffers could use them without speaking in code. All conversations are conducted across an IPsec VPN with a secure, real-time transport protocol for encrypting the voice at both ends, with the [VoIP ][6]server being housed inside an NSA facility. It's part of a program to get handset makers to build this kit so the Information Assurance Directorate doesn't have to navigate the interoperability hurdles between each company's tech. The agency has launched a how-to for any manufacturer looking for a large Government contract to produce Fishbowl phones on a larger scale, although they'll probably have to change the name to something more threatening like _MK-Ultraphone _or the _Phoneadelphia Experiment._
