Samsung Galaxy S3 To Come On Verizon: Top 5 Upcoming And Existing...

Samsung was reportedly going to unveil its third generation Galaxy S smartphone, the Galaxy S3, on Monday, April 23 at 7 a.m. On Sunday, Samsung Mobile's twitter account made a mysterious announcement: "Destination: tgeltaayehxnx." If you added a ".com" to the end of that anagram for "The Next Galaxy," you landed on a Samsung Mobile website an ... (more)

Kindle Fire Grabs Over Half of the U.S. Android Tablet Market

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

New submitter DillyTonto writes "Amazon got shelled by analysts and the press after releasing a buggy first iteration of the Fire edition of the Kindle e-reader. Three weeks later the Kindle Fire owned 14 percent of the whole market for tablets. Three months later, more than half of all Android tablets sold in the U.S. are seven-inch Kindle Fires, despite a huge bias among buyers for 10-inch tablets. How could a heavily modded e-reader beat full-size tablets by major PC vendors? It's cheaper than any other tablet or e-reader on the market, for one thing. Also important is its focus on being an e-reader, 'because people buy hardware to have access to one app or function, then take the other things it can do as an additional benefit.'"

Woz: Windows Phone is 'beautiful, ' Android 'no contest, ' still loves iPhone, ask again tomorrow

[![Woz: Windows Phone is 'beautiful,' Android no 'contest,' still loves iPhone, ask again tomorrow][1] ][2]

When Steve Wozniak talks mobile, people love to listen. Last [time we checked in][3], he was lauding some of Android's finer points, and now he's raining praise on Windows Phone. In an interview with _A New Domain_, the Apple co-founder was all too happy to share his recent positive experiences with the Espoo / Redmond collaboration. In particular, Woz waxes about how intuitive the interface is, and how naturally apps lead you around. He goes on to say how there's nothing he's seen that isn't more beautiful (than iOS and Android) on the Windows system, before claiming Android is "no contest" when it comes to the interface. It's not all lemonade and roses, however, as he then admits he's no fan of the voice control functionality compared to the other two platforms. When pushed to admit what he uses as default, it's still the iPhone -- two of them in fact -- but Woz's ability to see the best in all mobile operating systems will be sure to further confirm his status as one of tech's most liked. Head down to the source to hear for yourself.

Micromax's Superfone A50 Ninja enters India with AISHA voice assistant, forgets its shuriken

[![Micromax's A50 Superfone Ninja enters India with AISHA voice assistant, forgets its shuriken][1] ][2]

Hoping to compete with the [Siris of the world][3], Micromax has announced its new Superfone A50 Ninja alongside a novel feature dubbed AISHA -- which is short for Artificial Intelligence Speech Handset Assistant. Similar to Cupertino's personal secretary, AISHA vows to help folks with every-day elements such as making calls, setting up calendar events and even reporting what the weather looks like. Much to our disappointment, however, the A50 Ninja runs a not-so-new flavor of Android -- [Gingerbread][4] to be exact -- and Micromax left out any mention of [Android 4.0][5]. On the specs front, the dual-SIM Superfone sports a 3.1-inch display (mum's the word on the resolution), a two-megapixel shooter, Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities and an unspecified 650MHz processor. All in all, thanks to its 4,999 rupees (around $95) budget price, we can't imagine you'd complain too much. Be sure to hit up the Micromax link below if you're interested in grabbing one of these.

Leaked T-Mobile roadmap outlines Ice Cream Sandwich updates, new myTouch devices

[![Leaked T-Mobile roadmap outlines Ice Cream Sandwich updates, new myTouch devices][1] ][2]

Looks like our friends over at _TMoNews_ have unearthed a roadmap with some tasty morsels of info about what's coming down the pipe from [T-Mobile][3] USA in the next few months. Of course, none of this is set in stone or even confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt.

Most interesting is a pair of dates for [Ice Cream sandwich][4] updates, with [Magenta's Galaxy S II][5] slated to receive Android 4.0 on May 14th, followed by the [Sensation 4G][6] and [Amaze 4G][7] getting ICS (with [Sense 3.6][8], presumably) on June 16th.

A bunch of device launches from Samsung and Huawei round up the list of dates, with no sign of [HTC's One X][9], Samsung's upcoming [Galaxy S III][10], or T-Mobile's rumored [Galaxy Note variant][11]. Sadness. Check out the entire bounty below.

* May 9th: Huawei Astor (low-end phone for 7-Eleven)
* July 11th: [Huawei Buddy][12] and Phoenix ([myTouch][13] QWERTY and slate, respectively)
* July 11th: Samsung Gravity TXT (new color)
* Aug 1st: Samsung T159 Cacao (low-end handset)
* Aug 15th: Samsung Apex Q (mystery device)

Time Warner Cable is preparing for TWC TV IPTV streaming on Roku boxes

[![Time Warner Cable may bring TWC TV IPTV streaming to Roku boxes soon][1] ][2]

Time Warner Cable's [TWC TV][3] streaming TV service has already arrived on [iOS][4] and [Android 4.0][5], so what's next? According to information we've received, the next stop should be connected TV platforms, starting with the popular [Roku][6] media streaming boxes. We already got a glimpse of TWC TV on an HDTV during CES 2012 when it was being demonstrated at the [Panasonic][7] and [Samsung][8] booths, and were told at the time that it could launch on "multiple platforms" later this year. While company personnel are currently being briefed on compatibility with Roku the launch could still be some time off, as previous preparations for rollouts like [streaming to PCs][9] came months ahead. We contacted reps for the company about the plan and received a "no comment" in response, so there's nothing in the way of official word just yet. Either way, if all you want to do is [ditch the bulky cable box][10] for a diminutive hockey puck, it seems like 2012 could finally be the year.

Reuters: Apple in talks to stream films owned by Epix, no deal expected before September

It's reasonably well known at this point that Apple is looking to line up partnerships for some sort of a streaming video service. We've heard [again][3] and [again][4] that it's coming, so get ready to hum along with that 'ol tune one more time. _Reuters_ is reporting that Apple has been in negotiations with [Epix][5] since earlier this year, hoping to secure access to films from Lions Gate, MGM and Paramount Pictures. There's no indication of when such a service might come to light, but _Reuters_ indicates the company's [current deal with Netflix][6], which expires on September 1st, could be a conflict (though that [hasn't stopped Google TV][7] in the past). So, no proper Apple-branded TV until the fall? Stay tuned...

It may not be as sleek as its [S kin][3], or even as powerful as that [mid-level U][4], but this recently leaked Xperia ST21i might just have enough goodies to lure a handful of you in. According to _Techblog_, this thick, 3.2-inch unit packs some pretty run-of-the-mill features, including an 800MHz Qualcomm chip paired with 512MB of RAM, a 3-megapixel shooter to help with those [Instagram shots][5] and a bland 640 x 480 screen res. Unlike a few of the other Xperias _still_ [waiting to be served][6], though, the ST21i has already been filled with a portion of Google's [famous ICS][7]. No word yet on when the pudgy device will see a legit introduction, but until then you can peek at some extra photos at the source link below.

Carriers Desperately Seeking Windows Phone

AT&T and Verizon Wireless want Windows Phone smartphones to succeed in the U.S., partly to provide leverage against Apple's demands for subsidies and other concessions required for selling the popular iPhone.

Verizon ICS update schedule leaks: Rezound, RAZR and Xoom being tested now

[![Verizon device updates leak][1] ][2]

While there are already [vague Android update plans][3] for Verizon-connected Samsung devices, a leaked screen from somewhere within the Big Red bunker has offered up some more details. It looks like the [Rezound][4], [Droid RAZR][5] and [RAZR Maxx][6] are closest to the upgrade finish-line with testing likely to finish by May 7th for the HTC model and May 17th for the Motorola duo. According to _Droid Life_, Verizon's [Motorola Xoom][7] (you know, _the_ Android tablet) is getting its update direct from Google, but it hasn't been deigned worthy of a concrete release date. A handful of software updates are also pegged for the likes of the Bionic, Thunderbolt, Revolution, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Xperia Play, but they look likely to be more incremental than outright OS upgrades. For those interested in some new firmware numbers, we've included those update details after the break.

Fujitsu Laboratories wants to take your mobile's 2D videos to another dimension

[![Fujitsu Laboratories wants to take your mobile's 2D videos to another dimension][1] ][2]

[Fujitsu][3] Laboratories has developed technology that will let any phone grab pictures and video with some of that third-dimension spice. Using a small attachment with cleverly positioned mirrors, the widget sits atop your phone's plain old 2D camera and breaks the incoming image into two. Once the data has been grabbed, you then send it off to Fujitsu's servers, whereupon it'll be converted into a 3D format. This isn't the [first][4] [2D-to-3D][5] idea, but the main advantage, of course, is that your poor phone doesn't have to do all the leg-work -- but it undoubtedly comes at the expense of some quality. The gadget will get properly announced at the IEEE ISCE conference in Harrisburg on June the 4th along with pricing and availability. In the meantime you can step into the Japanese dimension -- i.e. the press release -- below for more info.

Dropbox adds automatic photo uploads for Windows and Mac, up to 3GB just for using it

[![Dropbox adds automatic photo uploads for Mac and Windows, up to 3GB sweetener just for using it ][1] ][2]

Dropbox isn't short of aficionados, but it's undoubtedly lost some of its gleam since Google [drove][3] the cloud war into a frenzy. In response, Dropbox's devs have been at the squat rack pumping up their multimedia credentials, recently adding [auto photo and video uploads][4] to their Android app and now extending that feature to any camera, tablet, smartphone or SD card via the Mac or Windows utility -- an add-on that was previously [beta-only][5]. Access the web interface and you'll see your stills arranged in a handy new Photos page, which displays them as large thumbnails bunched together by month. There's a blunter enticement too: your first auto upload will secure 500MB in extra storage, with subsequent efforts also rewarded up to 3GB. Perhaps that cardboard isn't looking so [soggy][6] after all.

Pre-iPhone Android prototype revealed in Google trial 'nothing like iPhone'

Google's original intent in 2006 was to introduce a phone with a BlackBerry-like keyboard and screen, then the iPhone came along... New images brought to light by Oracles's court case against Google indicate that Android was merely a clone of BlackBerry phones before the iPhone showed up.

Some Iconia Tab A500s getting Ice Cream Sandwich early, Acer Ring is MIA

[![Some Iconia Tab A500s getting Ice Cream Sandwich early, Acer Ring is MIA][1] ][2]

[Last week][3], Acer announced that Ice Cream Sandwich would make its way to Iconia Tabs A100 and A500 in Canada and the US starting April 27th, but _Phone Arena_ reports that some owners of the 10.1-inch A500 are getting the option to update a day ahead of schedule. If you're one of the lucky few to be in on the early upgrade, you should be ready to rock with Android 4.0.3 after a 30-minute install. The one potential downside to getting ICS ahead of time? You'll have to wait for the Acer Ring hub, which didn't make the cut for this update.

Twitter app update brings improved discover, search and notifications to iOS and Android

[![twitter app][1] ][2]

It's not like there's any shortage of alternatives, but those sticking with the ooh-ficial [Twitter app][3] on iOS and Android woke up to a rather pleasant update today. Briefly, the company's promising improvements to discover, search and notifications, with the new build allowing users to view "Activity" -- described as a "stream of updates that shows which tweets are favorited or retweeted by the people you follow and which accounts those people follow or add to lists." Search has also been made simpler in both programs, with the Connect tab allowing you to start typing the first or last name or username of the person you're looking for and watching autocomplete handle the rest. Ex-Sun Boss Defends Google's Right To Java on Android

Taking the stand during the ongoing court battle between Google and Oracle over the use of the Java programming language on Google's Android mobile operating system, Jonathan Schwartz -- the former CEO of Sun Microsystems, the creator of Java -- said that Java has always been free to use and that although Sun didn't necessarily like the way Android used Java, it had no intention of stopping it.

ComScore pegs Kindle Fire at more than 50 percent of the Android tablet market

[![][1] ][2]

We've seen some pretty clear [indications][3] that the Kindle Fire was rapidly gaining market share among Android tablets, and ComScore is now out with a new report that indicates it recently crossed a big milestone. According to the research firm, the Fire's market share fully doubled from December to February, with it standing at 54.4 percent as of the end of the month. Counted together, the Galaxy Tab family sits in second at 15.4 percent, while the Motorola Xoom and Asus Transformer come in at 7 and 6.3 percent, respectively. Of course, the Kindle Fire isn't _quite_ your ordinary Android tablet, so this is likely better news for Amazon than Google. In addition to that, ComScore also looked at the browsing habits of tablet users, and unsurprisingly found that larger screens tended to lead to more content consumption, with 10-inch tablets boasting a 39 percent higher consumption rate than 7-inch devices. You can find all the numbers at the source link below.

Republic Wireless now issuing invites for summer beta program: is your name on the list?

[![Image][1] ][2]

[Republic Wireless][3] is now issuing the cellphone equivalent of Willy Wonka's golden tickets: an [invite][4] to its [forthcoming beta][5]. When you've been assigned a wave, you'll then be placed on a wait list, only told a week before you have to place cash on the barrel for a handset. Our tipsters have told us that the company is pitching (via a survey, of course) to hit three price points for customers, each fee buying a smartphone and the first month's service. All they could supply were the specs, so we've suggested some handsets that could fit the bill:

* Entry Level: $199 gets a phone from an "unknown" manufacturer with a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 600MHz CPU, 0.5GB of storage and a 5-megapixel camera -- which puts us in mind of the ZTE Libra or the [iNQ Cloud Touch][6].
* Mid-range: $299 will buy a handset from a "well known" manufacturer, 3.7-inch touchscreen, 1GHz CPU, 1GB storage, 5-megapixel camera and a VGA front-facer, similar to the [Galaxy U][7], [HTC One V][8] or [Huawei Vision][9].
* Top Line: $499 gets you a 4.3-inch touchscreen phone with a 1.2Ghz dual-core CPU, 8GB storage and, weirdly, a 7-megapixel camera. We hope that last stat is a typo, since it rules out the vast majority of handsets at that level. If it was 8-megapixels, for example, we'd be thinking about phones like the [Galaxy S II.][10]

We reached out to the company for more details, and were told that it's simply in a discovery phase of sorts -- it's still trying to get a better grasp on exactly what phones would be desired. Unfortunately, that means that there aren't any concrete handset decisions to be shared just yet, but we'll be sure to pass those along as soon as we find out ourselves.

[Thanks, Matt]

DirecTV Everywhere brings streaming movies, TV shows to Android right now, iPhone keeps waiting

[![DirecTV Everywhere brings streaming movies, TV shows to Android right now, iPhone keeps waiting][1] ][2]

DirecTV's still-in-beta ["Everywhere" streaming package only arrived on the iPad a month ago][3], and now the company has updated its [app for Android phones][4] with access to the same set of video-on-demand streaming movies and TV shows for viewing wherever subscribers might be. Interestingly this feature is arriving on Google powered devices before it hits the iPhone (neither one so far has added the [in-home live TV streaming feature][5] from the iPad app, however the iPhone does have a player [for the Nomad transcoder][6] which Android and the iPad lack), in opposition to the usual trend of video streaming apps from cable and satellite TV providers, often for [DRM][7] and [compatibility][8] reasons. On Google Play the app was still installable on our various tablets and phones alike, although YMMV on what happens when you select the "Watch on Phone" tab to stream from HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Encore or DirecTV Cinema. Of course the usual DVR scheduling and remote control features are still present and accounted for, so hit the link below to grab the free app and try it out yourself.

Sony Tablet S gets a wedge of Ice Cream Sandwich

[![][1] ][2]

We're not gonna act all surprised, or anything -- Sony's been talking up [Android 4.0's][3] arrival on its [Tablet S][4] for [some time now][5]. For those who have been waiting with bated breath for the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade on their oddly-shaped tablet, however, that time is now. Cybercriminals Exploit Björk's Biophilia App To Compromise Androids

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

An anonymous reader writes "The Russians who put out fake versions of Angry Bird Space and Instagram for Android last week have competition. Biophilia, a musical experiment by Bjork into the world of apps, has been ported to Android as a Trojan." Maybe not totally surprising; as the submitter reader continues, "last year at the launch of the app, Bjork was quoted in an interview inviting pirates/hackers to attempt to port her code over from iPhone to other platforms."

[![O2 UK launches new wallet service, helps you empty yours (video)][1] ][2]

This may not be the UK operators [first attempt][3] at dipping its fingers logo into your pockets, but O2's new mobile wallet does bring with it some _de rigeur_ functionality. Taking a leaf out of [Barclays][4]' book, the new app lets you send "Money Messages," essentially text-driven money transfers to any phone number. There's smart-shopping features, too, such as a barcode reader for price comparisons, and daily discount deals to stop the well from going dry too soon. Interestingly, you can also apply for a physical companion card, based on Visa's pre-pay service to bring your virtual wallet into the real world. Not an O2 customer? Doesn't matter, apparently, and the app is "compatible with the majority of smartphones as well as iPads" which we guess means iOS at least, and Android, too, judging by the phones shown in the video after the break.

In Ticketing increases options for venues and promoters, as long as they're using iOS

[_![Image][1] _][2]

Converting a cellphone into a [credit][3] [card][4] [reader][5] is nothing new, but transforming one into a box office for live events could shake things up a bit -- or, at least provide a bit of friendly competition for [NFC][6][-based][6] alternatives. In Ticketing has just launched InHand Box Office software for use at live events. The company claims to be one of the greener ticketing outfits out there, and plans to turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a device capable of wirelessly processing payments (and printing out paper receipts, unlike [Square][4] or [PayPal Here][7]) at independently run concerts or festivals. Potentially reducing time spent in line and preventing congestion at the entrance translates into more people inside the venue, and using your phone instead of a difficult-to-establish credit card merchant account should reduce the friction in throwing such an event. As long as you tend to carry the appropriate iDevice with In Ticketing's new app installed, you can marry it to that iAPS Sled you see above to create your own personal CC processing machine. The only issues? Convincing Gotye to play your house party instead of Coachella next year, and that awkward lack of support for Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.
