Adobe Flash 11.3 checks in with security fixes, OS X silent updater and Firefox sandbox in tow

[![adobe-flash-11-3-security-fixes-os-x-firefox][1] ][2]

While feverishly revamping Flash with the all-new [Next][3] version -- to keep [HTML5][4] from killing it -- Adobe is still plugging the current incarnation with smaller updates. To that end, Flash 11.3 just popped out of beta, which sees the company add a few notable goodies for the [beleaguered][5] plugin. On top of filling seven critical security holes, Adobe added a background updating feature for Mac OS X and signed the code in preparation for compatibility with [Mountain Lion][6]. That way it'll align it with the upcoming [Gatekeeper][7] feature in the next OS X release, though you'll have to dial its max security down one notch to get it. Lastly, sandboxing -- [already][8] in Chrome -- has been tacked on to Firefox as well, slowing hackers by isolating the plugin from critical system processes. All that fresh duct tape and polyfill should keep Flash rattling along -- until Adobe can pull the gleaming Next platform out of the hangar. Meanwhile, click the source for the download links.

Opinion: Microsoft should be backing Android. Here's why

Microsoft's failing Windows Phone strategy proves that sometimes, the best platform is the one you can make money from, even if it isn't yours.

ComScore: Nearly a quarter of US smartphone owners have tablets, love their video

[![Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 review wrap-up][1] ][2]

If you've got a smartphone, it's increasingly likely that you're also carrying a tablet as a sidearm. [ComScore][3] understands that 23.6 percent of American smartphone owners also have [an iPad][4], [Kindle Fire][5] or some other large touchscreen slab as of April. That's only 16.5 percent of all cellphone owners in the land, but that's a huge jump from 9.7 percent of smartphone owners (4.7 percent of cellphone owners) just one year earlier. And if you do own a slate, odds are that you're watching your fair share of movies and cat videos. More than half of tablet users, 53 percent, fire up the likes of [Netflix][6] or YouTube at least once a month, with almost a tenth (9.5 percent) tuning in daily. Tablet lovers are unsurprisingly three times more likely to watch than their smartphone counterparts, suggesting that it's just a short hop from buying a tablet to catching up on [_Daily Show_ episodes][7].

China-bound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing back

[![Chinabound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing back][1] ][2]

It was only a couple of months ago that we [first crossed paths][3] with Sony's [Xperia][4] Neo L, and now the [Ice Cream Sandwich][5] handset is back with a vengeance -- at least in terms of exposure. As you may know, details were revealed in abundance (read: 1GHz Snapdragon S2 CPU, 512MB of RAM) during our first MT25i encounter, but thanks to Taiwanese site _ePrice_, we're able to gander at the device posing in an array of different angles and leaving very little to the imagination. For now, pricing _still_ remains a mystery, though we do know Sony's 4-inch (854 x 480) Neo L is expected to hit Chinese shelves later this month. Until then, anyone intrigued can jump past the break to check out a different look, or hit the source link for the full set of snaps.

Sometimes it can feel like you're being [sold][3] a book [one page][4] at a [time][5]. The latest in the Droid RAZR HD's story comes via some benchmarks. A NenaMark2 report clearly shows what claims to be the Verizon phone with a [Qualcomm][6] Adreno 225 GPU. Not the most exciting plot twist, but this does, by association, reveal that it's a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 running the show, as rumors have been suggesting. The resolution (1196 x 720) and Android version (4.0.4) also got an outing, with an overall score on the test of 59.1. Ready for the [next chapter][7]? We guess we'll just have to wait.

Linux lands on Android 4.0-toting MK802 mini PC

[![Linux lands on Android-toting MK802 mini PC][1] ][2]

If the [MK802][3] piqued your interest but has you pining for [Ubuntu][4], Linux Questions forum user michaelfisk has a solution. The secret sauce is a pre-baked image of Ubuntu 10.04 modified for a different device using the same 1.5 GHz Allwinner processor. Simply slide a microSD card prepped with a bootable image of the distro into the mini PC and you're set. Though Lucid Lynx can be coaxed to run on the $74 [mini PC][5] without considerable hassle, performance isn't exactly top notch -- unseemly load times and a few kinks are reportedly throughout the experience. Eager to load up your [Cotton Candy][6] competitor with Linux? Hop past the break to see Liliputing give it a test drive or hit the links below for walkthroughs and the appropriate download.

Editorial: The Galaxy S III in the US is giving Samsung a backbone

![][1]

Samsung caught more than a few off guard with its US launch plans for the [Galaxy S III][2], but primarily for what it _didn't_ do. Whether it was a variant for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon, the American versions had no arbitrary [screen size bumps][3]. No [keyboards][4]. Not even the customary navigation key changes that Samsung has implemented in US-spec Galaxy phones to avoid [uncomfortable comparisons][5]. Instead, the Korean electronics giant was dictating almost the entire device launch strategy to the carriers, which [sounds a little familiar][6]. While some would be cynical about it, it's really the sign of a rethink at Samsung that's giving the company the courage it needs to keep ahead -- and which could trigger a wider change not just at carriers, but within the Android ecosystem as a whole.

Purported Motorola Dinara press shot slips out, carries a whiff of Atrix 3

[![Purported Motorola Dinara press shot slips out, carries a whiff of Atrix 3][1] ][2]

We're taking this with a big block of salt, but we may have just had our first real peek at the [Motorola Dinara's][3] American form. A claimed press shot has the possibly [Snapdragon S4][4]-powered Android 4.0 phone carrying a fairly plain shell, but also sporting a 720p display and an all-touch interface borrowed from Motorola's [recent Chinese introductions][5]. The tip to _The Verge_ hasn't produced any shocks, including the mention of LTE and preloaded AT&T apps, although the badging does give us some room for skepticism: AT&T rarely if ever leaves its three-letter name out of phone branding, and that front camera position is slightly odd. As long as no wool has been pulled over eyes, however, the Dinara could be a candidate for another [Atrix sequel][6] that keeps Motorola on Big Blue.

WWDC: Developers More Excited About iOS Update Than Android [REPORT]

Developers are eagerly awaiting the news that will come out of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference next week, and according to a new report, they're looking forward to it more than the Android updates likely to surface from the upcoming Google I/O event in late June, a report suggests.

Odd Laptop-Tablet Hybrids Show PC Makers' Panic

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

jfruh writes "Taipei's Computex trade show has seen an array of strange devices on sale that are somewhere between PCs and tablets: laptops with screens you can twist in every direction, tablets with detachable keyboards, all-in-one PCs with detachable monitors. Some have Intel chips, some ARM chips; some run Windows 8, some Android. They all exist because of the cheap components now available, and because Windows 8 will make touch interfaces possible -- but mostly they exist because PC makes are starting to freak out about being left behind by the tablet revolution."

E3 2012: not quite ready to go mobile

[![][1] ][2]

Perhaps [E3 2012][3] will be remembered as the year that even Nintendo acknowledged the [existence of smartphone gaming][4] -- if only begrudgingly so, dragged kicking and screaming into the early '10s. It's a brave new world here, a strange one in which everyone and their grandmother has become a gamer by default, carrying high powered portable computers in their pockets at all times. But even as all the major players took time out to give a nod to the ever enlarging juggernaut that is mobile gaming, its an element that still feels like a bit of a redheaded stepchild inside the Los Angeles Convention Center, where console gaming is still far and away the dominant force -- it's a presence relegated to brief mentions in larger press events and pushed to the sides of the convention floor.

It comes as no surprise, of course, that Nintendo didn't dwell on the matter during its show opening keynote on Tuesday. The mere fact that company president Satoru Iwata made reference at all to mobile operating systems is something of a sea change for an executive who has thus far stubbornly refused to even "consider" developing for the Androids and iOSes of the world. And the news from Sunday doesn't do much to shake that stance. While mobile operating systems were name checked, it was only in reference to users' ability to access social information from the Wii U on their browser.

Huawei Activa 4G gets your 4G LTE fix on MetroPCS for $149 contract-free

[![Huawei Activa 4G gets your 4G LTE fix on MetroPCS for $149 offcontract ][1] ][2]

MetroPCS is known for offering 4G LTE smartphones [on the cheap][3], but it's going for a record today. The Activa 4G isn't just Huawei's first LTE smartphone in the US, it's temporarily the least expensive LTE phone in the country at $149 contract-free for a "limited time." Digging around, it's certainly possible to find out how [Huawei][4] and MetroPCS reached that price: the 3.5-inch, 320 x 480 screen, 800MHz processor and five-megapixel rear shooter won't have [Verizon Galaxy S III][5] customers developing second thoughts. Still, there is a front VGA camera on the Android 2.3-toting phone, and [MetroPCS][6] preloads a copy of the movie _Kung-Fu Panda 2_ on the bundled 4GB microSD card. You won't have to wait at all if it sounds like a bargain, as the Activa 4G is already sitting in stores real and virtual as you read this.

'Facebook tax' could make web companies pay for usage outside the US

[![ITU ponders Facebook tax for developing nations][1] ][2]

Leaked documents purportedly from the [ITU][3] reveal that the body is considering a levy on content-heavy services like [Facebook][4] and [Netflix][5] to pay for the bandwidth they use outside of the US. Tabled by lobbyists representing Europe's biggest cellphone networks, the proposal suggests that [Google][6] and others should [shoulder some of the cost][7] of bringing their services to customers in the rest of the world. In response, Cisco VP Robert Pepper has argued that any such charge could cause web services to block queries from developing nations, "effectively cutting them off from the internet." The motion will be discussed at a December meeting of the ITU council, where all 193 member countries will be allowed to vote.

Sony keeps Xperia upgrade train rolling, brings ICS to Mini Pro

[![Sony keeps Xperia upgrade train rolling, brings ICS to Mini Pro][1] ][2]

[Software update sagas][3] typically center around carriers and OEMs [failing to deliver to users][4] in a timely manner -- or, even at all. Not so with [Sony][5], which continues to set itself apart from the mobile pack by keeping to its [public timetable][6] and [doling out the Android 4.0 upgrades][7] to [Xperia handsets globally][8]. And despite community concerns that featherweight devices like the [Mini Pro][9] wouldn't make the cut, the company's surprising owners by making the Googlefied OS goods available to download for that diminutive handset now. You'll need to have the proprietary PC Companion software installed to access it, but after that, all should be smooth ICS sailing.

HTC Desire V makes its European debut with dual-SIM capabilities, keeps your affairs in order

[![HTC Desire V makes its European debut with dualSIM capabilities, keeps your affairs in order][1] ][2]

Whether you travel a lot, have to deal with spotty coverage or straight up lead a double life, [HTC][3] has a new [dual-SIM][4] smartphone for you with the Desire V. The handset is a first of its kind from the company for its European audience, which is said to debut first in Ukraine at a cost of 3,800 грн (approx. $470). The Desire V is an [Android 4.0][5] smartphone with [Sense 4][6] and is based on the Qualcomm MSM7227A SoC. Its spec sheet is quite decent, which includes a 1GHz CPU, a 4-inch WVGA display and a 5-megapixel camera. You'll also find 512MB of RAM, and while the phone offers just 4GB of internal storage, it also includes a microSD card slot and 25GB of storage through Dropbox. Only one SIM will support data connections, however, as the latter is limited to GSM/GPRS connections -- still fine for voice, but keep that in mind. You'll see the Desire V hit the streets next month, which'll give you enough time to get your affairs in order (or disorder, as the case may be).

Facebook App Center for mobile leaks out on iOS, uses peer pressure to clinch the sale

[![Facebook App Center for mobile leaks out on iOS, uses peer pressure to ][1] ][2]

While [Facebook][3] said it would deliver a version of its [App Center][4] store for mobile, it was shy on how that would work. An early iOS tester (since confirmed by _TechCrunch_) apparently didn't want to wait for an official explanation and slipped out a handful of shots: they show a mobile-optimized store that will look familiar to anyone who's picked up an iPhone or an Android phone in the past few years, but with an appropriately social bent. Friends' recommendations come front and center, and are so prominent that they take precedence over the app description; we're wondering if Facebook isn't pressuring us into downloading apps like it's a schoolyard dare. Facebook is still reluctant to say when App Center will hit pint-size proportions for everyone, though the largely complete-looking test version gives us hope for a quicker launch.

Intel Builds On Top of Android, But Hedges On Open-Sourcing Improvements

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

Barence writes with this news as carried by PC Pro: "Intel claims it is making significant improvements to the multicore performance of Android -- but isn't sure if it's willing to share them with the open-source community. Speaking to journalists in London, Intel's mobile chief Mike Bell said that Intel's engineers were making significant improvements to Android's scheduler to improve its multicore performance. 'Android doesn't make as effective use of multicore as it could,' he said. However, when pressed by PC Pro on whether those improvements would be shared with the open-source community and Intel's competitors, Bell remained non-committal. 'Where we are required to give back to open source, we do,' said Bell. 'In cases where it's not required to be open source, I'm going to think about it. I don't like doing R&D for competitors if they're not going to contribute themselves,' said Bell, before adding that 'in general, our philosophy is to give things back.'"

Snakebyte tablet gaming controller for Android and iOS hands-on

[![Snakebyte tablet gaming controller for Android and iOS handson][1] ][2]

If you're a mobile / tablet gaming enthusiast, you may get tired of swiping your fingers across the Retina display or using the on-screen controls. [Snakebyte][3] is looking to lend a hand with its upcoming game controller for Android slates and the iPad, so we went hands-on here at [E3][4]. The accessory plays nice with tablet PCs running Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich and Apple's portable device outfitted with any [iCade-compatible apps][5]. Dressed in a soft-touch coating, the peripheral feels great in the hand and the base is much like a PS3 controller. The unit connects via Bluetooth and pairing it with your mobile gaming device of choice is a breeze. When performing said set-up, you can select from five different modes to suit your needs including gamepad / controller, keyboard and mouse, solo keyboard, solo mouse and iCade mode (iOS-only). You'll always know which setting you've chosen thanks to an LED indicator on the front side of the kit. Touting eight hours of battery life, the gaming accessory charges via USB and will include a simple stand for your slate. Interested? You'll be able to snag one for $40 at the end of July. For now, though, take a peek at the gallery below for a closer look.

Samsung ChatON messaging app comes to Windows Phone, cross-platform party planned

[![Samsung ChatON messaging app comes to Windows Phone, crossplatform party planned][1] ][2]

Continuing to (perhaps unintentionally) kick SMS messaging to the curb, Samsung's taken another, admittedly smaller, chunk of the smartphone crowd, announcing its [ChatON][3] messaging app for Windows Phone. It has already claimed a place on Android, Bada, iOS, and BlackBerry devices, plus its own [web-based client][4]. Now the app's finally ready to embrace those long-suffering Samsung-made Windows Phones -- it's apparently available to download from the phone-based marketplace. Unfortunately, the link has gone inert on the web store, so you'll have to hit up the dedicated Samsung zone on your phone to grab the messaging service. Let's hope Victoria Justice is still looking to party.

LG starts Optimus LTE Ice Cream Sandwich rollout on two Korean carriers

[![LG starts Optimus LTE rollout on two Korean carriers][1] ][2]

LG said it would [start delivering Android 4.0 upgrades to its Optimus LTE (SU640) phones this month][3] (as part of a [wider upgrade plan][4]) and now it has officially begun. Assuming you're a Korean customer on LG U+ or SKT obtaining the update should be a simple affair of downloading it from the site or via LG's support tool, however other regions and flavors have yet to be confirmed. There's also no word yet on the other Optimus phones but now that new [UI 3.0][5] has started to flow their arrival shouldn't be far off.

Splashtop's Win8 Metro Testbed comes to Android slates, keeps everyone happy

[![Splashtop's Win8 Metro Testbed comes to Android slates, keeps everyone happy][1] ][2]

Shortly after launching its [Win8 Metro Testbed][3] on [Cupertino's tablet][4], Splashtop's bringing the Microsoft OS simulator over to the Android side. The app is essentially identical to that of the iPad, meaning it'll give developers (or any other adventurers) a Windows 8 canvas to test out possible future applications on Redmond's novel platform. That said, you'll need to have a copy of the [Release Preview][5] installed on your PC, as well as a Google-certified slate sporting Android 3.1 or higher, with a "target" screen resolution of 1280 x 800 in order to kick things off. The [Splashtop][4] Win8 Metro Testbed will cost you $50, though the service has an ongoing promo which slashes half of the usual price. If you're curious enough to dive in, you can grab the application now via Google Play -- or, you could always check the video after the break while you're thinking it through.

Dropbox for Android adds support for Korean language, ICS-only video streaming UI

[![Dropbox for Android adds support for Korean language, ICS-only video streaming UI][1] ][2]

You can't deny [Dropbox][3] has been doing a pretty decent job of [handing out][4] constant updates to Android users since its beginnings on the platform, and, well, today's no exception. This time the cloud box application -- now in version 2.1.4 -- brings along a couple of fresh bits to powered-by-Google devices. To start with, the free app's finally adding support for Korean language (on its website, too), while Dropboxers running [Ice Cream Sandwich][5] will also see a new "custom-tailored" video streaming UI -- you know, to play nice with those fancy virtual buttons. Judging by recent reviews, most of the Android folk seem to be enjoying the minor changes, but in case you've yet to try it yourself, you can do so by grabbing the update from the Play link down there.

Hands-on with the Honeywld Power Zest ICS set-top box at Computex 2012 (video)

[![Handson with the Honeywld Power Zest ICS set-top box at Computex 2012][1] ][2]

Looking for an unwieldy product name for your next game of tech Scrabble? How about Honeywld Power Zest? Yes, don't adjust your television, there's no "i" in Honeywld. Speaking of TVs, this err... zesty little item we discovered here at [Computex][3] is a set-top box running [Ice Cream Sandwich][4]. Feel the power! To be clear, this is not a [Google TV][5] device -- it runs Android 4.0 with a heavily skinned, remote control-friendly UI.

The box (available in blue, red, yellow and black) is built around a 1.2GHz dual-core [Marvell][6] SoC featuring [Qdeo][7] technology paired with 1GB of RAM. An embedded 2GB microSD card provides flash storage for the OS. In front you'll find a power LED and infrared receiver, while in back there's a power button, 3.5mm AV connector (for analog audio and composite video), optical audio output, HDMI socket, two USB 2.0 ports, an 100BaseT Ethernet jack and a 12V DC power input. There's no wireless support.

We took the device for a spin using the supplied IR remote (which includes a mix of standard buttons plus the home, back, menu and search keys required for Android) and the experience was a bit of a mixed bag. It certainly worked as advertised but navigating Android with just a D-pad and four buttons was quite frustrating. Text entry was painful and buggy (an infrared keyboard will be offered as an extra accessory) -- then again, the box we used was still running early firmware.

Honeywld plans to make the Power Zest available to Taiwanese retailers late July for somewhere between $95 to $120. Retail pricing will be a a little higher depending on markups. Until then, feast your eyes on the gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.
