mpol writes "In the past, WhatsApp has been criticized over their insecure use of XMPP. Recently, new versions of their app have incorporated encryption. It seems the trouble isn't over yet for WhatsApp and its users. Sam Granger writes on his blog that WhatsApp is using IMEI numbers as passwords. This is at least the case with the Android app, but other platforms are probably using similar methods. Since someone's IMEI number is easily readable, this isn't really secret information that should be used for authentication."

Ainol releasing dual-core Novo 7 Crystal tablet: Jelly Bean and an IPS display for $139

[![Image](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/novo7.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/08/ainol-novo-7-crystal-tablet-jelly-bean-ips/)

Chinese tablet maker [Ainol](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ainol/) is stepping up from its ICS-running [Novo 7](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/23/ainovos-bargain-novo-7-ics-tablet-ready-to-tickle-us-pockets/) to the Novo 7 Crystal, a new dual-core 1.5GHz model running Jelly Bean for $139. Below the hood is an Amlogic 8726-M6 Cortex A9 processor, a Mali 400 GPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The 7-inch touchscreen display sports a 1,024 x 600 resolution, and Ainol chose an IPS panel for wide viewing angles -- that's not exactly common for a tab in this price range. The whole package weighs 0.72 pounds (328 grams) and measures 0.4 inches (11.2mm) thick, and the tablet will be available in black and white.

The Novo 7 Crystal will be WiFi-only (802.11n), though there's room for a 3G modem on board, and connections include a microSD card slot, mini-USB port and mini-HDMI. _Notebook Italia_ says the Crystal will start shipping on September 28th, though we've yet to see any official word on availability. Click through to the source links for more details.

For Android Users, 2012 Is Still the Year of Gingerbread

First time accepted submitter brocket66 writes with this excerpt from BGR: "Three major revisions of Google's Android operating system have launched since the company released Android 2.3 more than 21 months ago in December 2010, but Gingerbread is still the most widely used version of Android by a wide margin. A study conducted early this year by graphic designer Chris Sauve projected that based on Android adoption trends up to that point, Android 2.3 Gingerbread would be the dominant version of Android in 2012 despite the fact that Android 3.0 Honeycomb and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich had already been released. Now, as the fourth quarter of 2012 approaches, data from Google's Android version distribution tracker confirms once again that those projections were accurate."

AT&T upgrades Samsung Captivate Glide to Android 4.0, keeps the QWERTY habit going

[![AT&T upgrades Samsung Captivate Glide to Android 40, keeps the QWERTY habit going](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/samsung-captivate-glide-review-leathery-backdrop.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/att-upgrades-samsung-captivate-glide-to-android-4-0/)

Hardware keyboard fans must feel like they're part of an endangered species -- there's greater uncertainty these days about software updates, let alone new smartphones. If you're part of that persecuted group, AT&T and Samsung have your back: they've just started rolling out Android 4.0 for the [Captivate Glide](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/samsung-captivate-glide-review/). All of the features will be familiar if you've borrowed [someone's Galaxy S II](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/11/android-4-0-3-now-available-for-t-mobile-galaxy-s-ii/) in the past few months, although it's hard to object to the better multitasking and support for [Chrome](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/27/google-chrome-for-android/). About the only catch is the need to use Kies to grab the update, but that's a small sacrifice we're sure many are willing to make.

Google quietly snaps up internet security firm VirusTotal for an undisclosed amount

Having [recently wrapped up](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/22/google-officially-closes-deal-for-motorola-mobility/) the [Motorola Mobility acquisition](http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/15/google-acquiring-motorola-mobility/), Google's now moving onto different pastures and spending its cash elsewhere -- more specifically on an outfit known as [VirusTotal](https://www.virustotal.com/). And, as the internet security company confidently points out, the deal is "great news for you, and bad news for malware generators because Google's infrastructure will ensure that our tools are always ready, right when you need them." As for the Android creator, well, let's just say they, too, are happy to have the VirusTotal team aboard -- who, in the process, joins the likes of [Sparrow](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/20/google-aquires-sparrow-the-apple-focused-email-app-maker/) and [QuickOffice](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/05/google-acquires-quickoffice-expands-cloud-based-app-suit-for-en/) as part of Mountain View's most recent purchases. Google's official response on the matter can be found below, courtesy of _The Next Web_.

> Security is incredibly important to our users and we've invested many millions of dollars to help keep them safe online. VirusTotal also has a strong track record in web security, and we're delighted to be able to provide them with the infrastructure they need to ensure that their service continues to improve.

Samsung: Android's Multitouch Not As Good As Apple's

itwbennett writes "Hoping to avoid a sales ban in the Netherlands, Samsung has said that Android's multitouch software doesn't work as well as Apple's. Samsung lawyer Bas Berghuis van Woortman said that while Apple's technology is a 'very nice invention,' the Android system is harder for developers to use. Arguing the bizarre counterpoint, Apple's lawyer Theo Blomme told judge Peter Blok, that the Android multitouch isn't inferior and does so infringe on Apple's patent: 'They suggest that they have a lesser solution, but that is simply not true,' said Blomme."

JVC's $349 ADIXXION camcorder is shipping now, packs LCD, WiFi and live Ustreaming (hands-on)

After its [mid-summer reveal](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/jvc-unveils-adixxion-camcorder-the-second-x-is-for-xxtreme/), JVC's entry into the booming action sports camera market is now shipping and we got to spend some time with the questionably-named GC-A1 ADIXXION at the company's CEDIA booth. To compete with offerings from GoPro, [Sony](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/sony-action-cam-hands-on/) and our most recent favorite, the [Contour+2](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/contour-plus-2-review/), the GC-A1 brings its "Quad Proof" housing that makes it waterproof (to 5M) and shockproof (for falls of up to 2M), dustproof and freeze-proof, as well as built-in WiFi, integrated microphone, image stabilization and a 1.5-inch LCD on the side. It can use WiFi to make a video link with nearby Android or iOS devices as well as PCs so the wearer can check where the camera is pointing, and even stream video directly to Ustream via a hotspot, no PC necessary. For the $349 asking price a goggle mount, flexible mount, two lens protection covers, USB cable and a single battery are included. We didn't have a motocross track or snowmobile handy on the show floor, but in-hand it felt every bit the ruggedized, compact device that its advertised to be and the LCD was decently viewable. Check out a few more pics of it in our gallery below and some sample footage in the video embedded after the break.

Best Buy takes 2012 Amazon Kindle pre-orders for those that hate online shopping, appreciate irony

[![Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 impressions](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/kindle-fire-hd-on-seat.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/best-buy-starts-taking-2012-amazon-kindle-pre-orders/)

There's a certain amount of self-contradiction going on if you're visiting a brick-and-mortar store to pre-order a device that's all about e-commerce. If you relish the irony, Best Buy will gladly let you reserve Amazon's [$69 Kindle](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-announces-69-dollar-kindle-shipping-on-september-14th/), [Kindle Paperwhite](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-kindle-paperwhite-hands-on/), upgraded [Kindle Fire](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-kindle-fire-2012/) and [both](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/kindle-fire-hd-7-inch-hands-on/) [sizes](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazons-8-9-inch-kindle-fire-hd-impressions/) of the Kindle Fire HD (including the [LTE model](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/kindle-fire-hd-4g-lte/)) at both regular locations and Best Buy Mobile. The retailer isn't as specific with its in-stock dates as Amazon: beyond the $69 Kindle's September 14th date, we're only promised a generic October release for the Paperwhite and 7-inch Kindle Fires, while the 8.9-inch tablets will be available "before Christmas." Not the quickest path to getting a new Kindle in your hands, then, but it may be the best way to get a hands-on before clinching the deal.

HTC One S family hits China sporting different threads, identical specs

[![HTC One S family comes to China sporting different threads, similar specs](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/htcones-09-07-12-01.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/htc-one-s-family-arrives-in-china/)

HTC has delivered smartphone triplets to the [Chinese market](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/htc-to-launch-dragon-series-smartphone-in-mainland-china-expa/): the HTC One ST, SC and SU -- and while the devices have identical guts (except for network gear), each has its own housing, carrier and color scheme. All three carry 4.3-inch 800 x 480 screens, dual-core 1GHz processors, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, a 5-megapixel camera with 5 fps continuous shooting, Beats audio, [dual-sim](http://www.engadget.com/tag/dual+sim/) / dual standby capability and Android 4.0 with HTC sense 4. But the HTC One ST, destined for [China Mobile](http://www.engadget.com/tag/China+Mobile), brings a curvier 9.2mm thick design and choice of three colors, including a [now passe red](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/nokia-lumia-920-official-dual-core-1-5ghz-snapdragon-s4-cpu-wi/). The One SC for [China Telecom](http://www.engadget.com/tag/China+Telecom) has a squarish, 8.9mm asymmetric two-tone design, and three color choices as well, including a burnt orange for the more fashion forward. Finally there's [China Unicom](http://www.engadget.com/tag/China+Unicom)'s HTC One SU, with a similar body to its SC counterpart, but featuring powder blue as an accent color. No pricing has been announced yet for the entry-level spec'd models, but consumers there may want to check their wardrobes before picking up one of the bolder models.

Adobe Reader 10.1 for Windows Phone brings updated file browser, new search functions and more

[![Adobe Reader 101 for Windows Phone brings updated file browser, new search functions and more](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/adobereaderwp.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/adobe-reader-10-1-windows-phone-update/)

Judging by WP Marketplace reviews from folks like yourself, the platform's [Adobe Reader](http://www.engadget.com/tag/AdobeReader/) application is in much need of a few tweaks -- and, well, that's exactly what the [Flash](http://www.engadget.com/tag/flash) maker's done. As it did with its [Android and iOS](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/10/adobe-mobile-reader-signature/) counterparts a few months back, Adobe's now bringing an updated version (10.1, to be exact) of its mobile Reader app to the [Windows Phone 7.5](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/27/windows-phone-7-5-mango-review/) (or later) crowd. Among the most notable features you'll find are a revamped file browser, new search functionalities that make it easier to find words and phrases within documents, plus the ability to navigate PDF documents using the Page Scrubber or bookmarks you have set. Unfortunately, Adobe Reader 10.1 isn't up for download just yet, but it won't be too long before it eventually starts showing up on Redmond's app market.

**Update:** As our dear commenters have pointed out (and the Marketplace has since confirmed), the Adobe Reader update is now available for everyone's downloading pleasure. Enjoy.

Apple Reportedly Planning Streaming Music Service

Nerval's Lobster writes "Apple plans on taking a big bite of the streaming-music market, according to unnamed sources speaking to The New York Times. Those sources suggested that an Apple streaming-music service would 'probably' center on an app of some kind, and link to iTunes in order to better evaluate the listener's musical interests. In broad strokes, that would make it similar to Spotify, a streaming-music service that also requires an app. Other popular cloud-music hubs, including Pandora and Last.fm, operate primarily as browser-based services. The Wall Street Journal, citing its own unnamed sources, indicated that any Apple streaming service would work on iOS devices such as the iPad, Macs, and 'possibly on PCs running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.' In keeping with Apple's intense rivalry with Google, one source added, the service would not appear on Android devices."

EchoStar HDX-410 set-top box runs native ICS, supports terrestrial broadcasts (hands-on video)

[![EchoStar HDX410 settop box runs native Android 40, supports terrestrial broadcasts handson video](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/echostardsc08806.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/echostar-hdx-410-ics-set-top-box-hands-on/)

You may be familiar with [EchoStar's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/EchoStar) satellite-based ([Dish Network](http://www.engadget.com/tag/DishNetwork/)) and Sling Media ([Slingbox](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Slingbox/)) products, but the company also manufactures set-top boxes for third-party providers, as well as free-to-air services in the UK. It's this last grouping that'll be able to take advantage of the Android-based device we saw today, assuming it does in fact make its way to market. The HDX-410 runs native [Ice Cream Sandwich](http://www.engadget.com/tag/IceCreamSandwich/), and is available in two versions -- one supports IP content and local storage exclusively, while a second can also accept terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) programming, letting you play back live TV shows in addition to content from a local server, pulled from the web or stored on attached media or an inserted microSD card. It connects to the web using Ethernet or WiFi, and includes USB ports on both the front and the rear, Bluetooth, HDMI out, digital audio out and a standard-definition connection. It's also paired with a QWERTY keyboard-equipped remote manufactured by Philips with gyroscopic or directional-pad curser control, along with pinch/zoom gesture capability.

We had a chance to check out the ICS box at EchoStar's IBC booth today, where the device was running Android 4.0.4 and an early version of the company's hybrid app, which groups "favorited" content alongside terrestrial channels, letting you use the standard channel up/down button to navigate through stored TV shows, IP content or live programming quite seamlessly, as if all of the media was playing from the same source. It's clearly not yet ready for primetime, but the interface was sleek and speedy -- the set-top box performed very well overall. EchoStar reps were unable to confirm whether or not the HDX-410 would be coming to market at all, but they did add that the solution may be made available to third-parties in the future. Click past the break to take a closer look in our hands-on video.

Insert Coin: hands-on with the MG, a portable Android gaming solution for kids

_In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please [send us a tip](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/24/insert-coin-quikdraw-lens-holder/) with "Insert Coin" as the subject line._

Parent with a smartphone? If your kids are old enough to fiddle with a touchscreen, you've probably had your handset nicked. It can be a problem -- you need that phone, for calls, emails and [Engadget](http://www.engadget.com/tag/engadget+app/), but your little scamp just can't get enough of [Angry Birds](http://www.engadget.com/tag/AngryBirds/). What do you do? Trust, says PlayMG, but verify. The old phrase ties closely to the core philosophy of the MG -- a device the firm is developing specifically for kids who want to play Android games, but are too young for a smartphone. We met with the company's Taylor Cavanah to get a first hand look at the device and its parental control system.

During [Motorola's keynote](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/motorola-main-event-available-for-streaming/) on Wednesday, the company announced a nice little [bonus](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/motorola-jelly-bean-upgrades/) for loyal fans -- should your 2011-or-later handset not receive a Jelly Bean update, you'll get $100 if you upgrade to one of its [new models](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/motorola-droid-meet-the-family/). Well, a website for the deal has gone live and the initial Ts&Cs don't make it sound like an immediate discount, but that the Benjamin will instead be reimbursed as a gift card, carrier credit or a cash equivalent of [Motorola's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola) choice. We're still in the dark about which specific phones will be denied a taste of [Android 4.1](http://www.engadget.com/tag/jellybean), although the list is expected "very soon." In the meantime, you can sign up at the source link below to receive details of how to update, or how to claim the rebate once the fate of your old handset has been decided.

Were HTC One X+ specs just leaked anonymously by an XDA developer's tweet?

[![DNP HTC One X](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/htc-one-x-09-07-12-01.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/HTC-One-X-specs-leaked-tweet/)

For the second time, we're seeing specs leak out from what would no doubt be HTC's flagship phone, the One X+, but this time there's a lot more detail. An anonymous XDA developer called _@Football4PDA_, who has shown reliable form in the past by [outing](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/01/htc-accord-windows-8-phone-schema-purportedly-leaked-on-twitter/) the HTC Accord Windows Phone, has tweeted the impressive specs for the possible [HTC One X](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/10/htc-one-x-android-4-0-4-update/) successor. He claims that the phone will be about 134 x 70 x 9.3 mm in size, weight in at 129 grams and pack the new Tegra 3+ AP37 1.6GHz quad-core / 1.7GHz single-core processor with 1GB of RAM and a 32GB ROM. The tipster also said it'll be skinned with HTC Sense 4.5 on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, while still sporting the [rather anemic](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/htc-one-x-battery-life/) One X 1800mAH battery. Naturally, a tweet out of the blue accompanied by no other proof shouldn't be taken as gospel, but it does reinforce [another recent leak ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/03/rumored-htc-one-x-with-1-7ghz-tegra-3-revealed-in-nenamark-repo/)regarding the high-end device. Either way, we'll probably find out at HTC's [big event](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/htc-upcoming-event/) on September 19th.

SteelSeries Free Touchscreen Gaming Controls and Free Mobile Gaming Controller aren't free, we go hands-on (video)

[![SteelSeries Free Touchscreen Gaming Controls and Free Mobile Gaming Controller aren't free, we go handson](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/ssfreecontroller2.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/steelseries-free-controller-and-touchscreen-controls-hands-on/)

The capacitive touch capabilities of today's devices are perfect for a great many things -- but traditional gaming just isn't among them. When it comes to "fixing" gaming controls on touch devices, there are two avenues of approach, and SteelSeries is headed down both of them: [touchscreen augmenting](http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/04/fling-joystick-lets-you-get-physical-with-super-megaworm-on-the/) nubs, and [wireless gamepads](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/gametel-bluetooth-controller-for-android-and-ios-hands-on/). The firm lumps both of these solutions into its new "freedom to play" line of accessories -- and though both of them echo products we've seen before, these peripherals play their roles exceedingly well.

Netflix updates Android app with 'WiFi only' playback to keep mobile data usage in check

[![Netflix updates Android app with 'WiFi only' playback to keep mobile data usage in check](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/netflix.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/netflix-updates-android-app-with-wifi-only-playback/)

The smartest solutions to problems are often the simplest of all. In that spirit, [Netflix](http://www.engadget.com/tag/netflix) is introducing a feature to its [Android app](http://www.engadget.com/tag/netflix,android) that'll keep unknowing viewers from chewing up their mobile data plan. New to the settings menu, users will discover an option that restricts video playback to WiFi networks. Netflix has left the setting to user discretion, however, meaning that it must be manually enabled. Once the switch is flipped, you'll retain the ability to search and browse Netflix over a mobile connection, but you'll need to scramble for a WiFi connection when it's time to watch Walter White cook up his latest batch. If you're unsure of where your usage sits, the WiFi restriction is probably worth imposing -- unless you're with Sprint or [T-Mobile](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/psa-t-mobile-unlimited-data-plans-go-live/), that is.

WSJ: Apple developing competitor to Pandora, could launch within 'a matter of months'

[![WSJ Apple developing competitor to Pandora, could launch within 'a matter of months'](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/itunes.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/wsj-apple-developing-pandora-like-radio-streaming/)

_The Wall Street Journal_ is reporting that Apple is engaged in talks with record labels to create a [Pandora-like](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/23/pandora-android-app-update/) music streaming service. According to the outlet's sources, the service will be ad-supported and will be accessible from Apple's wide array of hardware -- there's even hope that PC users may be able to catch some of the action. However, it's said that Android devices will be left in the cold. Since Apple's negotiations are at an early stage, it's expected to take months before the service materializes. At any rate, if you're jonesin' for something fresh from Cupertino, we hear that Apple has cooked something up for [next week](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/apple-announces-presumed-iphone-5-launch-event-for-september-12t/).

Amazon confirms Kindle Fire HD models use Android 4.0 under the hood

[![Amazon confirms Kindle Fire HD models use Android 40 under the hood](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-89-hands-on.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-confirms-kindle-fire-hd-models-use-android-4-0/)

We already had a hunch Amazon's tablets would [move to Android 4.0](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/amazon-kindle-fire-sequel-may-have-surfaced-in-logs/) behind the scenes, and that's just what's happened. An Amazon spokesperson has confirmed to Engadget that at least the Kindle Fire HD's [7-inch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/kindle-fire-hd-7-inch-hands-on/) and [8.9-inch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazons-8-9-inch-kindle-fire-hd-impressions/) forms have had a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich to go with their new interfaces. We don't know yet if the [sped-up original](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/amazon-kindle-fire-2012/) gets the same treatment, although it's using an older and only slightly tweaked interface. Similarly, there's no word on any upgrade path to [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/); it's not something to count on, knowing the conservative path for the original slate. We're just glad that Amazon is keeping up with the times where it matters the most.

Wikipad costs $499 at GameStop starting October 31, gives Android a gaming costume

When we first caught wind of the [Wikipad](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/wikipad-ties-up-glasses-free-3d-with-games-controls-all-in-a-ha/) at CES, we picked up the distinct scent of vaporware. In the months since, we've seen the ten-inch tablet with detachable controls get games via [Gaikai](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/wikipad-android-gaming-tablet-adds-gaikai/) and from [PlayStation Mobile](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/14/playstation-mobile-announced-different-screens-same-games/), plus an impressive [list of specs](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/wikipad-specs-get-real-10-1-inch-1-280-x-800-display-1-4-ghz-t/). And now we know it'll cost $500 and will officially be available on October 31st exclusively at GameStop. Of course, you don't have to wait until then to call dibs on your Halloween treat, as those willing to plunk down five bills early can reserve one via pre-order starting tomorrow. That's quite a chunk of change, especially considering the cost of other [gamified Android tablets](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/archos-gamepad-with-physical-controls/), but it does have an impressive set of internals, and it's tough to put a price on having Jelly Bean out of the box, right?
