Google posts Android 4.1 Jelly Bean's changelog, explores its latest dessert in detail

[![Google posts Android 41 Jelly Bean's changelog, explores its latest dessert in detail][1] ][2]

We've certainly delved into [Android 4.1 Jelly Bean's][3] new features, but Google itself is just now giving us a full exploration of its update's sugar-laden heart through an official changelog. While Google Now, the updated camera app and other core components easily get their due, the checklist also has a decidedly more [buttery][4] feel than one would think -- key individual apps like Calendar now have more elegant transitions to go with the leaps and bounds in Android's overall speed. The breakdown even goes into corners that Google scarcely illuminated during the [Google I/O keynote][5], such as accessibility and the finer nuances of the new keyboard. If you're the sort whose Jelly Bean fever has you checking for that [Galaxy Nexus upgrade][6] so often that you're nearly punching a hole in the screen, Google has your (no doubt temporary) placebo.

Ask Engadget: best tablet, software and case for a child with a developmental disorder?

![Ask Engadget best tablet for a child with a developmental disorder][1]

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's [Ask Engadget][2] inquiry is coming to us from is from Kim, who wants to help her four-year-old play games and communicate in the home. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at **_ask [at] engadget [dawt] com_**.

> "I'm looking at getting a tablet for my four-year-old, developmentally delayed daughter. She uses an iPad with her therapist to play games and say what she wants, but I'm not sure if I should get the same for the home. Is there an Android alternative that's as useful in our special circumstances, and is it compatible with a sturdy, water-proof case for it?"

For our two cents, we'd say that in such circumstances, continuity is probably an important factor to take into account. However, we're also aware that some of the specialist apps run into the hundreds of dollars, which few can easily afford, so let's turn the question over to our community. Do you have experience in the area, or perhaps you've already been in this situation? Either way, why not share what you know?

MapQuest picks TomTom Maps to power iPhone and Android turn-by-turn navigation apps

[![MapQuest picks TomTom Maps to power iPhone and Android turnbyturn navigation apps][1] ][2]

Still trying to figure out which way to turn when it comes to on-phone navigation? How's about a free option to ponder? [MapQuest][3]'s gratis iPhone and Android programs are set to get a heck of a lot better, and soon. The company just announced that TomTom would become its maps provider, enabling it to provide coverage for more than 7.5 million miles of roads across North America. Interestingly, it seems that TomTom is finding new life after the death of the PND (personal navigation device) in software; just last month, Apple [knighted TomTom][4] to power its own internal Maps app, which is set to debut with iOS 6.

XBMC Ported To Android

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

New submitter TheUni writes with news that XBMC has been announced for Android. Quoting: "Not a remote, not a thin client; the real deal. No root or jailbreak required. XBMC can be launched as an application on your set-top-box, tablet, phone, or wherever else Android may be found. The feature-set on Android is the same that you have come to expect from XBMC, no different from its cousin on the desktop. Running your favorite media-center software on small, cheap, embedded hardware is about to become a hassle-free reality. And as Android-based set-top-boxes are becoming more and more ubiquitous, it couldn't be a better time. ... We will begin releasing apks for interested beta testers in the coming weeks. But for those who are up to the task, as you would expect from XBMC, the source code is available. We have decided not to push to Google Play until we are satisfied that users with all kinds of devices get the same great XBMC experience."

Garmin GLO Portable GPS and GLONASS receiver hit the FCC, get torn down for good measure

[![Garmin GLO Portable GPS and GLONASS receiver hit the FCC, attempt to pinpoint their own location][1] ][2]

Hasty, no? Merely hours after being [announced][3] to the world, Garmin's GLO Portable GPS and GLONASS receiver have touched down in the FCC's database. Per usual, that's a fairly solid indicator that the devices will be available for sale on US shores within a few weeks, and if you're curious, there's even a draft user guide tucked in the source link below. Truth be told, there's not a ton here that wasn't already made public -- it's obviously "Made for iPod / iPhone / iPad," and Garmin asserts that the included battery will take three hours to charge but 12 hours to deplete. The manual also asserts that Android users "may need to use an application to allow the sensor to properly communication over Bluetooth," and just in case you're thinking of getting wet _and_ wild, the outer casing is said to be "rugged, but not water-resistant." For shame -- we were totally looking forward to geotagging our next romp down the Gauley.

XBMC for Android app revealed; source code available now, beta APKs soon (video)

[![][1] ][2]

Surprise surprise, after [popping up on the iPad last year][3], [XBMC][4] developers revealed tonight that they've created a version of the media center that runs as an Android app. Currently the team has it stable on the Pivos XIOS DS set-top box, and posted a video (embedded after the break) showing it running on a phone and a tablet. Of course, the different varieties of Android hardware audio and video decoding is mostly a software only affair, but universal hardware decoding is in the plan. The truly dedicated can dig up the source code right now, but APKs for beta testers are promised "in the coming weeks." According to the blog post, it currently includes a community member created touch oriented skin and hopes to have more available before any version of this hits Google Play officially.

[Thanks, Bharath]

Logmein's gotten into the game as well, launching its [Cubby service][6] in beta earlier this year, letting folks share files on their Windows machines, Macs and iOS and Android devices. The company's looking to entice interested parties by offering up 1GB of storage for users who refer a friend to the service. Also new is unlimited sharing of "Cubbies" and a refreshed iOS app.

ASUS Transformer Prime TF700T showing 'in stock' at Office Depot, days before scheduled US release

[![ASUS Transformer Prime TF700T showing 'in stock' at Office Depot, days before scheduled US release][1] ][2]

July 16th? Why wait? A full three days prior to the previously [scheduled][3] US release date, ASUS' [Transformer Prime TF700T][4] is showing as "in stock" _right now_ from Office Depot. For those who've managed to forget about it's amenities since its original [unveiling][5] some six months ago, this one's packing a 10.1-inch (1,920 x 1,200) display, Android 4.0, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11b/g/n, 32GB of internal storage and NVIDIA's Tegra 3 keeping the gears turning. As expected, $499.99 is the asking price, with an estimated delivery of "Just as soon as shipping partners get back to work next week." Oh, and scalpers -- it's limit two per customer. Just a heads-up.

[Thanks, Tony]

Simmtronics' $81 XPad debuts, winning the race to the bottom

![Simmtronics' $81 XPad debuts, winning the race to the bottom][1]

The marketplace is flooded with cheap tablets at this point. Some of them quite [impressive][2], others are likely to make your [tear][3] your [hair][4] out. We think its safe to say that Simmtronics XPad will fall firmly in the latter category but, being a high-end pixel-pushing machine isn't the point. The XPad is a highly customizable Android slate designed to be as affordable as possible. The Indian company took the wraps off the product line in Dubai this week, revealing a 7-inch A8-powered machine that puts Ice Cream Sandwich in the palm of your hand for only AED299, or about $81. The company even claimed it could push prices down to about $40, which would make it even more affordable than the elusive [Aakash][5]. The race to the bottom isn't over just yet, but it seems like Simmtronics is now the company to beat.

Roku 2, LT and new HD boxes upgraded for more languages, future remote apps

[![][1] ][2]

Over on the [Roku][3] blog the company just announced it's delivering a software 4.8 upgrade starting today. First up there's a few new features included right away like support for Spanish and German in the UI, performance optimizations and playback improvement for channels like MLB.tv and GBTV. More interesting however is the prospect of what's to come, as it also note "under the hood" preparations for new channels and features, promising upgrades for the [iOS][4] and [Android][5] remote apps soon. Like the last upgrade, the new version is getting pushed to [Roku 2][6] and [LT][7] boxes now, while [new HD boxes][8] should see it next week.

Google delivers My Tracks 2.0 for Android, includes playback in Google Earth and aggregation of statistics

[![Google delivers My Tracks 20 for Android, includes playback in Google Earth and aggregation of statistics][1] ][2]

We've long since been fans of Google's [My Tracks app][3] -- perhaps the only issue is the Android exclusivity, at least for those using Windows Phone, iOS or BlackBerry. Of course, Columbia's [GPSPal][4] accomplishes some of the same tasks, but even it will need a major overhaul to compete with the feature set in My Tracks 2.0. Available now for no charge in the Play Store, the new route tracker adds the ability to play back your tours, runs, etc. on Google Earth for Android. Moreover, it now aggregates statistics over time to show trends in performance, and we're told that the user interface is "simpler and faster." Those who weren't so keen on the prior build's charting system may also dig the newfangled charts / stats tables, which are said to be "easier to read." So, how's about that midnight run in Crystal Lake?

CyanogenMod developers slap Jelly Bean on an Optimus 4X HD, tease CM10 (video)

That didn't take long. The build is still having some trouble with Google's [revamped search integration][4], but considering Android 4.1's source code was released [only days ago][5], the quick development is promising. LG Optimus Vu review: a 5-inch, pen-enabled phone to take on the Galaxy Note

[![DNP LG Optimus Vu review][1] ][2]

Tech companies are no strangers to the game of follow the leader -- industry imitation is, after all, the sincerest sign of a successful product. In the case of the [Galaxy Note][3], Samsung's phablet wonder has been enjoying some unexpected popularity in markets abroad and even here in the US. But the company's ownership of that once-niche category is about to be contested by a surge of copycats, spearheaded by the stylus-toting [LG Optimus Vu][4] ($866 unlocked). It should go without saying: this 5-inch not-a-smartphone, not-yet-a-tablet has a steep climb ahead if it wants to oust or even claim equal billing with its successful opponent.

Of course, the Vu isn't launching an attack on all fronts yet as, right now it's a Korea-only affair running Android Gingerbread. (It redeems itself somewhat with an LTE radio.) Though the competition is welcome, the duel is not an even one, given the Vu's unusual mix of internals: a 1,024 x 768 HD-IPS LCD display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, 32GB of non-expandable storage, an ample 2,080mAh battery and a region-specific T-DMB TV tuner. But could that be enough to dethrone the current category king, or at least present a viable alternative? Join us after the break as we crack this rectangular nut and winnow out the marketing noise.

BBC releases Olympics app, streams the glorious Games straight to your iOS or Android device

![BBC releases Olympics app, streams the glorious Games straight to your iOS or Android device][1] ][2]

The 2012 London Olympics Games are nearly upon us and the [BBC][3] just can't hold back its excitement any longer. The Queen's favorite broadcaster has released its Olympics app for both iOS (5.0 and above) and Android (2.2 and newer) devices, apps that for the most part look like wrappers for the company's mobile Olympics pages. But, that's not to say they don't offer some excellent features, like guides to every competition, the ability to save stories to read offline later and, most importantly, up to 24 simultaneous live streams of video -- once the Games actually get started in two weeks.

Ask Slashdot: Managing Encrypted Android Devices In State and Local Gov't?

[![][1]][2]

An anonymous reader writes "I am a systems administrator for a mid size state agency. We currently offer Blackberries to our staff, but we are migrating to Android devices in the near future. Since phones have sensative data (email, documents, etc.), what is a good choice for encrypting that data? Options abound, like OS-level encryption from Motorola and Samsung, 3rd party apps from GoTrusted and even a LUKS port for Android. Does anyone have experience managing encrypted Android devices? What are the important features I should be looking at? Many thanks in advance." (And, for that matter, are there good options for doing the same with iPhones? Other options to consider?)

Panasonic Eluga Power earns nod of approval at FCC

[![Panasonic Eluga Power earns nod of approval at FCC][1] ][2]

Thanks to recent certification from the FCC, the [Panasonic Eluga Power][3] has just earned its figurative passport for travel within the United States. We first met the 5-inch behemoth back at [Mobile World Congress][4], which packs a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 and [Android 4.0][5]. At the time, it was thought that the smartphone only supported quadband GSM and 2100/900MHz UMTS connectivity. The story has changed a bit, as FCC documents reveal additional 3G support for the 850MHz spectrum. While the Eluga Power's usefulness here in North America is still rather limited, those who'd hoped to import one can now do so with a solid pat on the back from the FCC.

Mystery HTC device flaunts class-leading benchmarks, 1080p display

[![Mystery HTC device flaunts classleading benchmarks, 1080p display][1] ][2]

When we say "mystery," we totally mean it. We don't know if this is a phone or a tablet, or even if it's real -- stranger things have happened that concocted benchmarks. All we can say for sure is that a previously unheard-of device called the HTC 6435LVW has appeared over at the Community Uploads section of the GLBenchmark site, scoring a ridiculous 121 FPS in the Egypt Offscreen 720p test -- that's more than twice the score of the [HTC One X (LTE)][3], and 20 percent higher than the current performance supremo, the [Galaxy S III][4]. But that's not all, because the benchmark listing also throws up some specs: notably a 1794 x 1080 resolution (could that mean a new [HTC tablet][5] with onscreen buttons?) and a Qualcomm [MSM8960][6] processor (could it be the [Pro version][7]?). There are too many questions to contemplate, but here's one final detail: the Android ICS version is described as a Verizon build, so if this thing is legit maybe that's where it's headed.
