Ask Slashdot: Tips For Designing a Modern Web Application?

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

New submitter sdoca writes "I am a Java developer and for the past number of years I have mainly been working on server side code. I have an idea for a webpage/application that I would like to develop. For the general public, it will be a site where they can view upcoming events, filter them by type, date etc. and view details of events they're interested in. There will also be an admin section to the app where organizations who want to post their events can log in and set them up. In the long term, writing a view-only version as an Apple and/or Android app is on the radar, but I want to focus on the generic web app for now. I'm not sure what languages/frameworks to look at using for the webpage portion of my project. Many (many!) years ago, I wrote some applets. After that I did some work in WebObjects and after that I tinkered with Wicket. I have no experience with PHP and would like to stay in my Java comfort zone as much as possible, but want to use the right tool. I'm concerned about browser compatibility issues. Chrome didn't exist when I last did web page development. I'm looking for good resources (books, internet) that will guide me through the potential issues and your recommendations for a web development framework."

Google: Ice Cream Sandwich now accounts for 7.1 percent of Android user base

[![Google Ice Cream Sandwich now accounts for 71 percent of Android user base][1] ][2]

Well, it's about time that [Ice Cream Sandwich][3] made some headway -- even if the process is much slower than consumers deserve. According to the Android developer hub, Android 4.0 now accounts for 7.1 percent of all Android smartphone and tablet installations, which is [a sharp and welcome increase][4] over the 2.9 percent figure that we reported just one month ago. Naturally, [Gingerbread][5] users still account for the lion's share of the Android ecosystem with 65 percent, but it's worth pointing out that this segment _also_ grew during the last month -- no doubt at the expense of Froyo and Eclair. Don't know about you, but we like our desserts fresh, thank you very much. Go ahead and hop the break to see the full breakdown.

ComScore: Android's US share dips ever so slightly, iPhone slowly marching up

[![ComScore Android's US share dips ever so slightly, iPhone slowly marching up][1] ][2]

Here's a minor surprise: Android slipping at all in US [market share][3]. Although it saw just a tiny drop of two tenths of a point from [where it was in March][4], and still saw a gain over January, Google's platform was down to 50.8 percent in April. Nothing dramatic enough to make Mountain View worry, as such, but definitely a sharp break from the [rapid growth of last year][5]. Apple could meanwhile claim a small victory for the month as a result by continuing to grow -- even if we wouldn't call its 31.4 percent iPhone share a revolution. Of the other platforms, only Microsoft had anything to crow about, as the [Lumia 900][6] launch brought Windows Phone back just over the four percent mark.

The positions among individual cellphone makers as a whole didn't budge in April, and whatever losses came to Android's partners in that area were spread evenly across top-dog Samsung as well as LG and Motorola. Perhaps the biggest twist was HTC holding its ground at a steady six percent, which hints that the [HTC One S'][7] arrival at T-Mobile might have been just the ticket to keeping Taiwan in the fight.

[![Image][1] ][2]

[Robonaut 2][3] is the [International Space Station's][4] friendly 300-pound killbot android assistant. It's there to assist the team with science experiments and probably capture alien life at the [expense of the crew][5]. After being fitted with more heat-sinks to enable its delicate machinery to work for longer, it was given the job of monitoring the on-board air velocity to ensure the humans didn't choke to death. Since it doesn't have legs (they're still being built on the ground), it was only able to monitor the air in the Destiny Laboratory, but the test proved so successful that [NASA][6] hopes future robots will take over the more dangerous or mundane elements of space work -- at least until they become self-aware and unionize.

Viper outs SmartStart 3.0, knows where your car is and what it's up to

[![viper-smartstart-3-0-cloud-gps-remote-smartphone][1] ][2]

[Viper][3] reckons it can be your singular, all-round vehicle app judging by the considerable leap in features for version 3.0 of its Android, iOS or Blackberry SmartStart. On top of [previous][4] car lock, security and ignition controls, the aux channels now let you monkey with other parts from afar, like the sunroof, windows, stereo, AC and more. The new SmartSchedule pings you when it's time to (remotely) start 'er up, and vehicle diagnostics flag engine issues through DTC repair codes, if you drive certain models. The jazziest addition is the Directed Cloud Services which let you monitor your car's status and position through GPS, and start it, lock it, or access the other aforementioned controls -- regardless of where in the world you both are. For the true micro-manager, there's no such thing as [overkill][5].

Microsoft Smart Glass coming at E3, AirPlay-style streaming from iOS, Android and Windows Phone?

[![Microsoft Smart Glass coming at E3, AirPlay-style streaming from iOS, Android and Windows Phone?][1] ][2]

[Windows 8][3] is coming and it features more and better Xbox integration than we've yet seen in an operating system from the company -- but it looks like Microsoft has something even bigger up its sleeve. We've just seen a presentation indicating the company will launch something called Smart Glass next week, a so-called "companion application" that will act much like AirPlay for the Xbox 360. Using the app, users will be able to play video and other media on tablets and phones and, more interestingly, push that content right to their consoles for playback on the big(ger) screen. But, it gets better: this app is said to be available for tablets and phones running Windows, Windows Phone, Android and iOS. Yes, it'll be about as multiplatform as it gets, and if this presentation proves to be legitimate, we'll be learning a lot more next week when E3 gets underway.

Android's Next Patent Challenge Comes From Nokia

Nokia could be considered the grandfather to the modern cellphone. The company obviously owns a lot of patents and receives royalties from those who make smartphones.

Google Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft, Nokia

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

x0d writes with news that Google filed an EU antitrust complaint against Microsoft and Nokia on Thursday, claiming they are using proxy companies to make smartphone-related patent claims in an attack on Google's Android business. From the article: "Google also plans to share its complaint about patent 'trolls' with U.S. competition regulators. The Internet-search giant alleges that Microsoft and Nokia have entered into agreements that enable entities such as Canada-based Mosaid Technologies Inc. to legally enforce their patent rights and share the resulting revenue. Google, which hasn't been sued by Mosaid or related firms, described its filing with European regulators as a pre-emptive measure against a developing legal hazard for Android partners. The threat is that if phone makers perceive a significant legal risk in using Android, they may opt instead for Microsoft's Windows Phone software."

Viewdini hits Play to help find video, if you're on Verizon

[![viewdini-hits-play-find-video-on-verizo][1] ][2]

A week and change after it announced [Viewdini][3], Verizon has it ensconced in the Google Play store. If you're on Android 2.2 or greater and have a 4G LTE plan, you can install the app at no charge, and start your search by typing in the name of a movie, actor or genre you want to see. The app will scurry off and check net-based providers like Hulu, mSpot and Netflix, along with [cozy new chum][4] Comcast's Xfinity, and bring back relevent titles along with their price and availability. Further pawing will reveal critic reviews and ratings, filmographies, related picks and other info -- just keep one eye on that [data limit][5].

[Thanks, Artem]

Statcounter: Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer in global browser share for the first time

[![Image][1] ][2]

Chrome's share of internet use just inched past Microsoft's Internet Explorer last month, laying claim to king of the web browsers. Statcounter's analytics measured that 32.43 percent of its 15 billion page-views were done on Google's browser, while Internet Explore took 32.12 percent and Firefox 25.55 percent. According to StatCounter, an upswing of over 0.6 percent to Firefox (from Internet Explorer) helped Chrome claim the top spot. The month rounds off some impressive growth for Chrome in 2012, which claimed second place in Statcounter's results [at the start of the year][3]. Now, if Google could just get that [mobile version][4] out to more handsets, we could see how it fares against small-screen competition.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 beta ready for download: better portrait mode and Android app support

[![BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 beta ready for download, has plenty worth testing][1] ][2]

That [Michael Clewely][3] is a man of his word. Not only has the PlayBook OS 2.1 beta version arrived just when he promised, but it also brings some handy additions that nudge the tablet a little closer to the land of fulfilled potential. There's portrait support for the Email, Calendar and Contacts apps, along with full device encryption and some smaller tweaks like .png screenshots and improved email folder support. The Android runtime has also been bolstered to allow multiple apps to run in separate windows, access the camera module and support in-app payments via the BlackBerry Payment SDK. There'll be more stuff in this update, according to RIM, but we'll have to wait (there's that [word][4] again) until the commercial release. You'll find the beta registration link below.

Creative HanZpad hurdles FCC, will deliver ICS and quad-core goodness to China

[![creative-hanzpad-fcc-quad-core-ICS-tab][1] ][2]

Creative Labs might want to get some white gloves, because we recognized its [fingerprints][3] on the HanZPad, a Chinese tablet platform which just landed at the FCC. Using its own [ZiiLABS][4] division's [ZMS-40][5] ICS optimized SoC (system on chip), the thinnish 7.95mm tab looks to have meaty specs with a quad-core ARM 1.5GHz processor, 1280 x 800 10-inch IPS display, 1GB RAM and microSD slot allowing up to 64GB of external storage. On top of Android 4.0 support, Creative will be developing its own OS for the device, which will be distributed through OEMs and its own channels. While currently tapped for the Chinese market, Creative's weighty US presence may suggest it'll eventually reach across the Pacific -- if it does, let's just hope it leaves the smudges behind.

Panasonic's UN-W700 runs Android, streams Blu-ray video, takes Skype calls, isn't a tablet

[![Image][1] ][2]

We've seen Android used for [home theater purposes][3] before, but it's been rare that a company has wanted Google's OS used almost exclusively with that purpose in mind. [Panasonic][4] is gambling that its UN-W700 can use Android (2.3, unfortunately) for an all-singing, all-dancing compact video device. The 7-inch, 800x480 standee plays media from its [SDXC][5] card slot or over DLNA, including recordings normally destined for Blu-ray from one of Panasonic's [Diga][6] set-top boxes. If you'd rather dish out video than just receive it, there's a front camera for Skype video calls -- and the W700 is still Google-blessed, so you can visit Google Play if you'd rather play _Death Rally_ than watch _Death Race 2000_. We're not sure about the idea of a tablet without much of the portability, but Japanese shops will give the opportunity to decide for yourself on July 25th for an unofficially estimated $446.

Still, the source is useful for most anyone that wants to tinker with what should be the most ubiquitous Google-powered phone of the year, so get to downloading if that sounds like you.

Sony Smartwatch update speeds apps across the board, makes sure you (always) know what time it is

[![Sony Smartwatch hands-on][1] ][2]

If you'd picked up a [Sony Smartwatch][3], you might have noticed that some apps plod along; not anymore, courtesy of a just-posted update: third-party apps, the music jukebox and weather should all be speedier. Sony has also fixed the watch face -- a slightly important part of a [watch][4] -- to keep it always visible whether or not the device is in standby mode. Similarly, if you use the Smartwatch for exercise, you'll be glad to know that Endomondo's tracker app has now received Sony's seal of approval as a watch companion. Hit the Google Play link below if you can't wait to get moving, but you'll get a heads-up from the Android app in the days ahead if there's no rush.

Google lobs antitrust complaint against Microsoft, Nokia in EU, claims they're playing patent footsie

[![European Union flags][1] ][2]

The gloves just came off at Google: the company has just filed an antitrust complaint with the [European Commission][3] against Microsoft and Nokia. Its gripe accuses the two Windows Phone partners of playing dirty pool through handing 1,200 wireless-related patents to Mosaid, a Canadian firm which spends most of its time [suing the industry over WiFi][4] rather than making products. Microsoft and Nokia are allegedly hiking the prices of devices by "creating patent trolls" that bypass deals preventing them from suing directly, possibly steering a few companies towards picking Windows Phone instead of Android.

Google argues that it's launching the complaint as an early defensive measure. Neither Microsoft nor Nokia has responded, although there's a degree of irony to the action: the complaints assert that Nokia is jeopardizing standards-based patents, but Google's [recent acquisition][5] Motorola has itself [come under EU scrutiny][6] for possibly abusing standards with its lawsuits against Apple and Microsoft. Either way, it's clear Google is concerned that Microsoft's [Android patent licensing campaign][7] might lose its decorum in the near future.

Judge Frees Google's Android From Oracle Copyrights

The federal judge refereeing the billion-dollar fight between Oracle and Google over the Android operating system has dismissed Oracle's claim that the Java APIs used by Android are subject to copyright.

Oracle v. Google: Judge finds structure of Java APIs not copyrightable, renders jury infringement verdict moot

[![Image][1] ][2]

Thought the Oracle v. Google litigation fireworks [were over][3]? Well, if you weren't aware, during the copyright phase of the trial, the jury found that Google had infringed the structure, sequence and organization of Oracle's Java APIs. However, at the time, Judge Alsup had yet to evaluate the validity of Oracle's API copyright claims upon which that verdict was based. Today, Alsup found that Oracle's argument didn't hold water because it would expand the breadth of copyright holder's rights too far -- in essence, it would allow owners of software code to prevent others from writing different versions to perform the same functions. This ruling renders the jury's earlier infringement verdict moot, and gives Mountain View yet another courtroom victory. Despite this latest defeat, Oracle's sure to run the case up one more rung on the legal ladder, so let the countdown to the appeal begin.

Google+ Events leaks out through Google Calendar, will let your knitting circle schedule a Hangout

[![Image][1] ][2]

Google has been on another one of its Google+ [feature][3] [addition][4] [streaks][5] lately, and it's so eager to please that it's spoiling other features early. More than a few people visiting [Google Calendar][6] have been given an introduction to "Events in Google+" in recent hours despite the extra component (and its splash page) being absent. From what we know, Events will provide the obvious Facebook-like option to create and track events among Google+ circles, but it will also let organizers slot in a Hangout video chat in advance as well as pool together photos and videos associated with an event. The Google+ app for Android has even been showing an empty button that's speculated to be a dedicated Events section. Google hasn't sent any official word as to when Events will go live, although we suspect it won't be long before everyone from [photographers][7] through to grandmothers knitting scarves can use Google+ to coalesce.

Samsung unveils South Korea-bound Galaxy R Style: 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, LTE and ICS on board

[![Samsung unveils South Korea-bound Galaxy R Style: 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, LTE and ICS on board][1] ][2]

Not satisfied with the launch of its newest creation, [the Galaxy S III][3], Sammy's taken the wraps off of yet another member of the famed galactic family: welcome the Galaxy R Style. While Samsung isn't coming out and saying it, the device is essentially a follow-up to last year's [4.2-inch Galaxy R][4] -- and although the handset keeps a similar form factor, it's changed quite a bit on the inside. For example, the 4.3-inch (960 x 540), 9.79mm thin R Style now houses an LTE chip, 16GB of onboard storage and a TouchWiz flavor of [Ice Cream Sandwich][5]. As if that wasn't enough, the slab also packs a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU and a 5-megapixel camera to take care of those filtered [Instagram shots][6] -- all while being powered by a 2000 mAh battery. Samsung's R Style will be priced at 700,000 won (around $590) when it goes on sale in South Korea later this year. If we were there, we'd take two.

Skype CEO Tony Bates confirms 250m monthly users, talks Microsoft partnership and future plans

[![Tony Bates and Kara Swisher at D10][1] ][2]

Skype CEO [Tony Bates][3] just took the stage here on the final day of D10, and he got right into the news delivery mindset: as of now, there are 250 million monthly connected users. Said Bates, "When we closed [the Microsoft deal], we had 170 million monthly users, so haven't skipped a beat in terms of momentum." Continuing on when asked from Kara Swisher about integration with Microsoft, Bates said: "I'm not going to talk about future products, but I'll steal a line from Tim Cook. We're going to double-down on integration with Windows 8, and we're doing to double-down on secrecy." Specifically, he mentioned that there'd be some "great integration points" with Windows 8, noting that Skype is viewed as an "experience, with most folks viewing it as a Swiss army knife, regardless of where and how it's used." Kara followed up with a question on Kinect, and Bates did his best to dodge the bullet by re-referencing intent on Windows 8 and Windows Phone -- there wasn't a peep mentioned in either direction on if it'd end up there.

Kara asked what his most important smartphone platform was, and Bates said: "I wouldn't classify it as one most important. As far as download numbers, it's absolutely iPhone, but Android is gaining momentum. Our top priority is mobile; we made two acquisitions in that space. The Android marketplace -- as many know -- is quite fragmented, and this was a big challenge for us from an engineering standpoint. This team in the [Qik acquisition][4] really helped us there. I'm very hopeful -- Windows Phone is very exciting for me because of that people-centric nature." Kara pushed to see if Windows Phone would get a "special" version of Skype, and Bates simply said that he "hopes they can add value." Given that both Windows Phone and Skype now live under the same roof, though, we're guessing that he's underselling things in the effort of "doubling-down on secrecy."

ASUS throws up two more Computex teasers, hints at dual-OS and dual-side devices (video)

[![Image][1] ][2]

After the rather [vague teaser][3] from three days ago, ASUS is back with two new videos to highlight its surprises at Computex next week. The first one comes with the tag line "All-in-one is no longer in one," with the money shot being the Windows 8 logo and the Android mascot showing up on two water droplets after they separated. This dual-OS and possibly dual-body concept reminds us of the [Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid][4] that never really materialized on the market (at the time of publishing this article, Lenovo's product page still embarrassingly says "This laptop is not available to purchase yet"), so we certainly hope ASUS won't fall into the same pit with its upcoming mysterious product.

The second teaser, titled "When two sides unite," features a suspended cardboard with "Tai" printed on the left of the white side, and "Chi" on the right of the black side. After a finger smears a dot of paint on the "i" on both sides, the cardboard starts spinning to show a flickering image of "Tai Chi." Our money's on a laptop with a [dual-side touchscreen][5] on the lid (the smearing being the hint for touch input), thus saving the need of extra mechanical parts to make a convertible device (and out goes the [Eee Pad Slider][6]). Ultimately it depends on whether the cost of such double-sided displays like [LG's][7] would be feasible for ASUS to realize this idea; or worse yet, this could be just a matter of slapping two display panels back to back a la [Samsung SCH-W999][8], which might not make sense when you take both weight and cost into consideration. Well, we shall find out the truth in a few days. Check out the video clips after the break.
