Samsung Galaxy S III S Voice APK leaked online

[![Samsung Galaxy S III S-Voice APK leaked online][1] ][2]

If you find yourself with nothing better to do this weekend, then you might have a bit of fun playing around with Samsung's soon-to-be-released [S Voice][3] application on your rooted Android 4.0 smartphone. The APK has now made its way into the wild, and we couldn't help but take it for a spin on our Nexus S. First off, while we can't vouch for the security of the file, we can confirm that it's indeed functional. Secondly, while some of the S Voice features work just fine -- such as search or contact queries -- other requests such navigation repeatedly caused the app to crash. In other words, if you're expecting this app to behave as it should on the [Galaxy S III][4], you'll be in for a disappointment. If you're merely looking to poke around with the S Voice functionality, however, the download seems quite worthwhile. At this point, we're most curious to know whether non-Samsung owners have similar luck. If you're willing to give 'er a go, let us know your experience in the comments below.

Microsoft exec says Windows Phone outselling iPhone in China

[![HTC Triumph for China][1] ][2]

Going by Microsoft's Greater China COO Michel van der Bel, the launch of [Windows Phone in China][3] is off to an auspicious start -- enough to give Apple the shakes. He claims that devices like the [Nokia Lumia 800c][4] have helped Windows Phone reach seven percent of the Chinese market, or just enough to get past the six points of the iPhone. We're waiting on hard data before we take van der Bel's word: the [top smartphone makers][5] worldwide aren't depending much or at all on Windows Phone, and the iPhone has a [thriving gray market][6] in China that masks some of its real numbers. Having said this, we've seen signs of Windows Phone enjoying a [bit of a surge][7] even in an iOS- and Android-loving Europe, so we'll be watching to see if there's an uptick in the number of buyers saying _ni hao_ to Microsoft in the near future.

China clears Google acquisition of Motorola, eliminates last barrier to Googorola bliss

[![Google-Motorola][1] ][2]

The final significant roadblock to [Google's buyout of Motorola][3] has been cleared, as Chinese regulators have just given their rubber stamp. Their approval follows a few months after the simultaneous [American][4] and [European][5] clearances, and virtually all that's left now is to formally close the deal and start integrating the two mobile giants. It might still come too late for the combined entity to present a united front at [Google I/O][6], but at least they won't have any awkward glances at each other across the room. We're just trying to decide on whether or not Googorola is the best pet name for the loving, $12.5 billion-dollar Android union.

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile hits FCC, brings future-proofed HSPA+ for good measure

[![Image][1] ][2]

There's been hints of it coming [as early as February][3], but we now have a smoking gun at the FCC: the [Galaxy S III][4] is coming to T-Mobile. A Samsung [SGH-T999][5] has popped up at the agency sporting newly added 1,700MHz AWS support that's the telltale sign of a T-Mobile device, along with the T999 name itself (the T989 is the network's [Galaxy S II][6]). It also totes 850MHz and 1,900MHz WCDMA bands being used for HSPA+ data rather than just voice, a clue that the phone is ready for [refarmed GSM spectrum][7]. Just in case there was any remaining doubt, we've further spotted a related T999V entry at the Bluetooth SIG with a rather [familiar-looking][8] image as well as a Samsung-hosted T999 user agent profile on the web that matches what we know about the Android 4.0 hardware. We have yet to get a look at whether or not the T-Mobile version is any different on the outside, but with the FCC's help, there's not much left to know before the expected [summer US launch][9].

Dear Google: AT&T Locked Down the Best Android Ever, and It's Your Fault

Android phones are meant to be open, but unfortunately the best Android phone on the market is locked down, thanks to AT&T. It's time Google started to change that, by walking its talk on Android openness.

Microsoft Wins US Import Ban On Motorola's Android Devices

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

jbrodkin writes "The U.S. International Trade Commission today ordered an import ban on Motorola Mobility Android products, agreeing with Microsoft that the devices infringe a Microsoft patent on 'generating meeting requests' from a mobile device. The import ban stems from a December ruling that the Motorola Atrix, Droid, and Xoom (among 18 total devices) infringed the patent, which Microsoft says is related to Exchange ActiveSync technology. Today, the ITC said in a 'final determination of violation' (PDF) that 'the appropriate form of relief in this investigation is a limited exclusion order prohibiting the unlicensed entry for consumption of mobile devices, associated software and components thereof covered by ... United States Patent No. 6,370,566 and that are manufactured abroad by or on behalf of, or imported by or on behalf of, Motorola.' Motorola (which is being acquired by Google) was the last major Android device maker not to pay off Microsoft in a patent licensing deal. Microsoft has already responded to the decision, saying it hopes Motorola will now reconsider."

ITC bans Motorola mobile devices for infringing Microsoft patent

At the end of last year, an Administrative Law Judge issued an [initial ruling][3] that Motorola's mobile devices infringe a bit of Microsoft's IP. Now, the Commission has affirmed that decision and issued an exclusion order to ban Moto's offending devices from importation into the US. In case you weren't aware, the four patent claims at issue generally cover technology for scheduling meetings over email using a mobile device. So, unless Motorola removes the feature, pays for a license or whips up a workaround Microsoft's patent in short order, all its RAZRs, Droid 4s, Bionics and other handsets will be stuck in customs alongside [HTC's One X and EVO 4G LTE][4] -- that is, unless Obama steps in to save the day during the prescribed presidential review period. Microsoft, naturally, is quite pleased with this development and has issued a statement:

> Microsoft sued Motorola in the ITC only after Motorola chose to refuse Microsoft's efforts to renew a patent license for well over a year. We're pleased the full Commission agreed that Motorola has infringed Microsoft's intellectual property, and we hope that now Motorola will be willing to join the vast majority of Android device makers selling phones in the US by taking a license to our patents.
>
> _-- _David Howard, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel Microsoft

We've reached out to Motorola for comment on the matter as well, so stay tuned to see what it has to say.

Android in enterprises 'severely limited' by weak management support from Google

Adoption of Android tablets and smartphones in large businesses has been "severely limited" because of the complexities of managing the wide variety of Android-based devices and versions of the operating system, research firm Gartner said in an evaluation of 20 mobile device management software vendors released Friday.

$74 MK802 PC-on-a-stick beats Cotton Candy to market, has ICS on board

[![$74 MK802 PC-on-a-stick beats Cotton Candy to market, has ICS on board][1] ][2]

Unless you're lucky enough to live in Scandinavia, you'll have to wait till the end of summer to get your [Cotton Candy fix][3]. Aching to nab yourself a computer-on-a-stick before then? If you're willing to step down in specs, the Chinese-made MK802 could be the PC in your pocket. For $74 (versus $199 for the Cotton Candy), this 7-ounce device gives you a 1.5-GHz Allwinner A10 CPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and, like the Cotton Candy, Android 4.0. FXI's version, on the other hand, packs a dual-core 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos processor, and while the MK802 offers an HDMI port, the Cotton Candy includes an HDMI connector. The MK802 is slightly bulkier than its sweetly named competitor (3.5 inches vs. 3.1), but that Android logo on the front does wonders for its design cred. AliExpress.com is currently selling the MK802 with free shipping to the US -- click the source link for a gander.

ZTE confirms the Score M has a backdoor, hopes to patch up soon

[![][1] ][2]

Who knew that owning a [ZTE Score M][3] would mean living life on the edge? ZTE has confirmed that the [MetroPCS][4] phone has a [backdoor][5] vulnerability which could let a less-than-scrupulous hacker get root-level control over the Android 2.3 phone -- and because it's a unique app baked into the firmware, the login credentials won't change as long as the exploit survives. Other ZTE phones, like [the Skate][6], supposedly face the same hole as well. The company says it should have a patch ready to push over the air in the "very near future," but it hasn't said why the app existed in the first place. Either way, if you currently pocket the Score M or one of ZTE's other recent Android devices, we'd keep watch for any suspicious goings-on until a fix is in place.

HTC Desire C hands-on (video)

[![HTC Desire C hands-on][1] ][2]

HTC gave us a quick session to play around with its latest handset, the [Desire C][3]. No, it's not part of the consolidated [One series][4], nor is the company revealing precisely _what_ that "C" stands for -- heaven forfend it's "cheap". While a humble 320 x 480 touchscreen and 600MHz processor might not set many smartphone obsessives' hearts a' racing, it still manages to eke out a HTC Sense-skinned Android 4.0 UI -- no mere feat, in our opinion. A 5-megapixel camera and expandable microSD slot are some other welcome specifications and it's all wrapped up in an attractive matte finish -- you can take your pick form black and white in the UK. Catch our quick video run-through of the sub-$300 handset right after the break.

Insert Coin: Chameleon adaptive home screen replacement for Android tablets

_In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line._

[![Insert Coin: Chameleon adaptive home screen replacement for Android tablets][1]][2]

If you're an [Android tablet][3] owner, you're likely very familiar with the drill: after you unlock the device, you're presented with a static home screen full of apps and widgets, which may or may not be relevant to your current need. The creators of [Chameleon][4], a home screen replacement for Android 3.2 / 4.0 tablets, would like to change all that with a dynamic environment that'll adapt to your current GPS location, WiFi network or the time of day. Users may design and customize their ideal layouts, which may include news and social feeds in the morning, a calendar and tasks for the work environment and an assortment of entertainment options for the evening at home. Switching between these layouts isn't a problem, either, as you'll be able to flick between home screens just as you would with the standard Android interface.

Like a good rug, the interface is attractive and really pulls everything together. Chameleon is currently a [Kickstarter][5] project, and its creators intend to unleash the creation into the Google Play Store this September. Those who donate $5 or more can expect early delivery of the app, which is currently slated for August. It never hurts to be early in line, and Chameleon might just rekindle your love for Android tablets. For a quick peek of what's in store, check the video after the break.

[Thanks, Greg]

For Android fans wondering where their own version of these apps are, IK Multimedia thinks the Android audio engine has [too much latency][5] (_check the comments section_) to handle its real-time processing, but consoles you with the fact that the hardware is compatible with most devices. Sony helps you 'personalize' your Xperia further, announces case maker partnerships

[![][1] ][2]

Despite there being so many smartphones nowadays, finding cases for certain handsets can be tricky -- unless you're toting the likes of an iPhone or the latest Android flagship device, that is. Keeping that in mind, Sony has good news for [Xperia][3] owners, as it's officially announced a partnership program to bring more case options for its phones to market. According to Sony, 10 companies are currently onboard, including the likes of [Case-Mate][4] and [Incipio][5], and some will be announcing what'll be on offer before the month's out. There's no word regarding designs or prices just yet, but here's hoping that Case-Mate brings its cuddly Creature cases into the fray -- especially the [Waddler][6].

Liquidware debuts Amber, a customizable Android development tablet

[![Image][1] ][2]

It's likely overkill for those interested only in some [basic tablet modding][3], but the folks from Liquidware ([no strangers][4] to the DIY scene) have a new bit of kit that should please those looking to take on a more ambitious project. Dubbed simply Amber, the kit is described as "80 percent of the way to a tablet" -- you'll get a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a 7-inch capacitive display and a customized version of Android 2.3, but no pesky casing to get in the way of any other additions you see fit to add. That convenience comes at a bit of a cost, though. The Amber will set you back anywhere from $983 to $1,674 depending on the kit you choose. Head on past the break for a quick look at it on video.

Android Hackers Honing Skills In Russia

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

MikeatWired writes "The malware business growing around Google Android -- now the leading smartphone operating system -- is still in its infancy. Today, many of the apps built to steal money from Android users originate from Russia and China, so criminal gangs there have become cyber-trailblazers. Sophos and Symantec on Wednesday released their latest Android malware discoveries written in Russian. While the language narrows the number of potential victims, the social-engineering tactics used to get Android users to install the malware is universal. The gang tracked by Sophos is using fake antivirus scanners, while Symantec is tracking cybercriminals using mobile websites to offer bogus versions of popular games. Sophos says the criminals are like other entrepreneurs launching startups. They're starting in Russia, but have far greater ambitions. 'I don't think we can say that they're necessarily using it as a testing ground -- think of it more as a local business that as it grows may gain multinational ambitions,' Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said in an email interview on Wednesday. The cyber scam tracked by Sophos was reported this week by GFI Lab, which discovered links to the bogus antivirus software on Twitter. Sophos dug deeper and found that the .ru domains pointed to the same Internet protocol address hosted in Ukraine."

Which devices have Ice Cream Sandwich?

[![Image][1] ][2]

It's mid-May -- do you know where your [Ice Cream Sandwich][3] update is? Six months after Android 4.0 made its debut on the [Samsung Galaxy Nexus][4], millions of owners of legacy Android devices are _still _anxiously awaiting the day the new firmware gets downloaded on their own electronic real estate. At least the scene today is much more pleasant than it was just a few months ago, as ICS is finally rolling out to several popular devices. But if you're shopping for a phone or tablet, how can you possibly keep track of which device has what version?

Amidst the confusion, we've put together a handy list of the legacy devices that have already been updated to Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as the ones that are promised an upgrade at a future date. Of course, many phones and tablets have ICS ROMs, leaked builds and other unofficial versions of the new firmware available, but we'll only discuss official downloads here. We plan to amend the list as the update rolls out to more devices, so be sure to check back from time to time. Head past the break to see how much of a reach Ice Cream Sandwich has.

Gmail and iPhone alums create Electric Imp, connect your toaster to the web

[![Image][1] ][2]

Have you ever wanted to preheat your oven while on the way home from work, or start your sprinklers while vacationing, only to remember you don't have the spare loot lying around for a [network][3] of [smart appliances?][4] A recent startup (that somehow eluded [Kickstarter][5]) called Electric Imp is about to make your wireless control / monitoring fantasies a reality with its soon-to-be-released, $25 web interface. It works much like an [Eye-Fi][6] card, and communicates with cloud services as well as other connected devices like your Android or iPhone via WiFi. The company is working hard to get the slots that work with the cards into many of the machines that we usually don't link up to the good ol' www -- but have often wanted to -- and it hopes to have everything in place later this year. This all sounds like a great deal right now, but just wait until your washing machine gets hacked and starts using scalding water on all your darks and delicates. More info at the source.

I'm Watch creator explains order fulfillment process, offers 15 percent discount for your patience

[![I'm Watch creator explains order fulfillment process, offers 15 percent discount for your patience][1] ][2]

We all know that Android 1.6 [isn't getting any newer][3], but it's now clear that customers pining for the [I'm Watch][4] will need to dig deeply and muster a final bit of tolerance. According to the Italian smartwatch creator, it's made a few changes to the device, primarily to allow for greater application compatibility -- hopefully this means something other than a stale Donut. As for delivery, the company will send out 300 I'm Watches by June 15th and will then use the next month to solicit feedback and conduct final tests. By July 15th, the company will resume delivery for its outstanding orders and expects to fulfill all current orders no later than September 15th. Customers who'd prefer to back out from the deal will have until July 15th to apply for a refund from the company, and as a goodwill gesture, it's offering a 15 percent discount for all those willing to endure the wait. For the complete details, just hop the break.

[Thanks, Darrell]

Nielsen: Americans have 28 percent more mobile apps in 2012, look down on the web with disdain

[![Image][1] ][2]

It's not hard to see that Americans [love their mobile apps][3], and [Nielsen][4] can now tell us by how much. The average US smartphone owner circa mid-2012 now brandishes 41 apps, a pretty hefty 28 percent increase from a year earlier. They're preferring native apps to the web, as well: they're more likely to spend time with that direct port of _Cut the Rope_ than [the HTML5 version][5]. Along with reminding us that smartphone owners are [now in the majority][6] in the country, Nielsen has added that there's a total of 84 million Android and iOS users in the US, or more than double what we saw just a year ago. We're a bit disappointed that the figures mostly exclude BlackBerry and Windows Phone owners, although they still paint a picture of a country that's entirely comfortable in its smartphone shoes.

HTC confirms One X multitasking tweaks in Sense 4

[![HTC confirms One X multitasking tweaks in Sense 4][1] ][2]

There's been quite a bit of brouhaha over at _xda-developers_ lately about changes HTC's made to the way multitasking behaves on the [One X][3] compared to stock [Ice Cream Sandwich][4]. We're not just talking about obvious UI tweaks here -- [Sense 4][5]'s horizontal, card-like arrangement vs. Android 4.0's default vertical list -- but actual differences in memory and task management. While we're not running into any problems with our One X review unit, some users have noticed that background app are getting terminated too aggressively, so we reached out to HTC for comment. Here's what the company said:

> HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps. We value the community's input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers' experience with our devices. That said, multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience.

There you have it. HTC's definitely implemented some multitasking tweaks on handsets running Sense 4. Perhaps this is why battery life is so impressive on [AT&T's One X][6]? While we don't believe this is going to be an issue for most users, there's always the option of installing custom ROMs now that the phone's [been rooted][7].

Rogers and CIBC make joint deal for NFC mobile payments in Canada, let you check out with your BlackBerry

[![Image][1] ][2]

Canadians sometimes can't catch a break: while NFC payments have been relatively common for [Americans][3], [Europeans][4] and certainly the [Japanese][5], Canucks have had to largely make do paying with ye olde credit carde. [Rogers][6] and national bank CIBC want to put an end to these antediluvian ways: starting later this year, CIBC card holders will just need to swipe an NFC-equipped BlackBerry like the Bold 9900 ([Bold 9930][7] for CDMA-loving Americans) at a matching terminal to pay at a given store. The only special requirement is a secure SIM card that gives customers the freedom to change phones, even if it does create problems switching banks or carriers down the line. We're just hoping that Android and other platforms get the same treatment and let more of our Canadian friends pay for poutine that much faster.
