Lexibook kids-tablet coming to the US, makes fifth-graders dream of an Aakash

[![Lexibook][1] ][2]

French educational tech maker Lexibook is bringing its eponymous [kiddy-tablet][3] to the US from next month. It's not talking specs or price, but we're expecting it to be close to the Lexibook First currently available in Europe. The seven-inch slate packs a 600MHz processor, 256MB RAM, 4GB storage (expandable to 16GB with an microSD card), parental controls and 802.11 b/g WiFi. The [FroYo][4]-running device retails for £150 ($237) over the pond, but if the company tries something similar over here, we suspect people might plump for something a little [more powerful][5], or [less expensive][6], or [both][7].

Samsung Galaxy Stellar rumored to hit Verizon for $100, hopes to lure you in with Amazon apps

[![Samsung Galaxy Stellar rumored to hit Verizon for $100, hopes to lure you in with Amazon apps][1] ][2]

Regardless of the situation, it's relatively safe to say [Samsung][3] will never, ever run out of Galaxy monikers. Now it's the Korean outfit's [Galaxy _Stellar_][4] making the internet rounds yet again, though there's a little more information attached this time around. Per _Droid Life_, Sammy's purported [Verizon-bound][5] Galaxy Stellar will be joining the carrier's [LTE-equipped][6] smartphone lineup with a $100 price tag (of course, that's assuming you sign a two-year deal) and is, as you can see above, said to be carrying an "easy-to-use" Starter mode to help folks get started, plus a compact design that "fits comfortably in hands." Most notably, however, are the tidbits flaunting Amazon apps rather than, say, the Android maker's Play offerings -- an interesting plug, to say the least. At this point nothing's quite set in stone, so we'll have to wait for more details to spill before making any assumptions.

Google Goggles update brings support for devices without autofocus

[![Google Goggles update brings support for smartphones without autofocus ][1] ][2]If you thought Google's perspicacious searching application was clever before, prepare for a shock. [Google Goggles][3] version 1.9 adds support for devices without autofocusing optics, giving those on budget gear a chance to use the real world as a search box. Point it at a [QR code][4] containing a URL, and it'll show you a thumbnail of the page and check its credentials against its blacklist of malicious sites. If it comes up short when searching for a product, it'll even search for similar-looking items to help you find what you're looking for, and it's available from the Play store for free -- so you don't really have any excuse.

Ask Slashdot: Best Use For an Old Smartphone?

zaba writes "The original iPhone was a dream come true for me. Phone, camera, mp3 player and data all in one device. It had more cpu and memory than my first computer! Several generations of smartphones later, my wife and I have some random smartphones (some iPhone, some Android) lying around. Between privacy concerns, bad batteries, etc. these phones are not worthy of donation. So, I ask you, Slashdot readers, have you done anything fun with an old smartphone? Any suggestions/ideas?"

Rovio takes Angry Birds Space for a spin with NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover, teases Red Planet for fall (video)

It was almost as inevitable as gravity, really. Rovio has teamed up with [NASA][3] to offer a special, [Curiosity][4]-themed episode inside _[Angry Birds Space][5]_. The trek has the avians scouring 20 levels of the Martian landscape with a few bonuses thrown in for good measure. Just like your favorite childhood breakfast cereal, there's even a token healthy ingredient -- in this case, a chance for gamers to learn about Curiosity's exploration whenever they're not busy smashing pigs. Android and iOS users can dip into the new chapter right after they update, but that's not even the full extent of Rovio's plans. If the environs of Gale Crater are too limiting, you'll be glad to hear that the game developer is teasing a full-scale _Red Planet_ variant for the fall.

Good news for people who love good news -- Google has just thrown some bug fixes at its [Play Music app][3] with [Google TV][4] support that launched [late last year][5]. For those who've updated, let us know how either process is going for you in comments below. Or don't -- no pressure.

Telenav Scout for Apps comes to Android and Windows Phone, Scout Drive Button released for website-based nav

[![Telenav Scout for Apps comes to Android and Windows Phone, Scout Drive Button widget released for websitebased nav][1] ][2]

iOS app devs got Telenav turn-by-turn navigation access in March of this year, and now the same can be said for folks programming for Android and Windows Phone. In case you forgot, the [Scout for Apps][3] platform allows developers to incorporate Scout's personalized navigation directly into their applications. Not only that, but Telenav's making it easier for website owners to do the same for their websites with the release of the Scout Drive Button. The button puts the power of [browser-based GPS mapping][4] in an easy-to-implement widget, for free, with no coding expertise required. It also allows users to click the Drive button in their desktop browser to send a link to their phones that'll launch navigation directly, as opposed to inputting the address into a nav app manually. Interested? More info awaits after the break, and devs can get down and dirty with both Scout for Apps and the Drive widget at the sources below.

HTC Proto breaks cover, may give the world a ride on the Dragon

[![HTC Proto breaks cover, may give the world a ride on the Dragon][1] ][2]

Rumors have been circulating that HTC was planning a mid-cycle replacement for the [One V][3], the Proto, that would keep the line relevant in the face of some noticeably [tougher][4] [competition][5]. It may be more of a reality than a notch on the roadmap. As long as _The Verge_'s press renders are authentic, the Proto should be an almost straightforward, international edition of the previously China-only [Dragon line][6]. The design would carry the less [Legendary][7] appearance as well as nip and tuck those areas where the One V is weakest, adding a much-needed second core to the 1GHz processor and a slightly larger 4-inch screen. HTC wouldn't be reinventing the wheel -- it would reportedly keep the same 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of storage and 7.2Mbps 3G as the smartphone's early 2012 prequel. If, where and when the Proto shows up is still left to the imagination, though. Next week's [IFA][8] show is a tempting target for a late 2012 release, but there's no hard and fast rule that any introduction has to coincide with a major event.

Reserve the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D on NTT DoCoMo from tomorrow, full launch next week

[![Reserve the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D on NTT DoCoMo from tomorrow, full launch next week][1] ][2]

We [knew][3] the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D was due to hit [NTT DoCoMo][4] at some point this summer, and now we've got the full details. You can reserve yours through the carrier from tomorrow, and the proper launch will take place the following week on August 30th. The device will be available in the three colors you see above, and as it recently [passed through the FCC][5], a trip to the US could also be in the cards. But unfortunately, that orange wallpaper is all too harsh [a reminder][6] of one that never ventured outside Japan.

Pandora Android app update: new UI, song history and song lyrics for impromptu cubicle concerts

[![Pandora Android app update new UI, song history and song lyrics for impromptu cubicle concerts][1] ][2]

If [Pandora][3] for Android is your go-to service for music streaming while you're out and about, you're in for a bit of a treat. The internet radio outfit has [updated][4] it's app for the Google OS with a number of enhancements that should make spinning those Music Genome Project selections even more satisfying. First, a redesigned UI and navigation takes some cues from the [Android design standards][5] in order to liven up the aesthetics. A retooled song history allows users to review, rate and bookmark their previously played tracks for future reference. When a particular artist is playing, album art can now be minimized to reveal bio information, song lyrics and Pandora's regular similar artist / track recommendations. If you're jonesin' to grab the new look for yourself, hit the source link below to update.

ZTE-made Concord arrives at T-Mobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contract-free

[![ZTEmade Concord arrives at TMobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contractfree][1] ][2]

[T-Mobile][3] wants to offer as much of a lure to smartphone newcomers as to power users who might spring for its [truly unlimited data][4], and the [ZTE][5] Concord might just be the right kind of bait. The truly 2010-vintage Android 2.3, 3.5-inch screen and 2-megapixel camera won't get anyone's pulse racing, but a $100 contract-free price is hard to ignore -- even for the sort who'd otherwise be looking for a just-does-calls flip phone. Accordingly, the carrier plans to put the Concord in front of audiences that would rarely care to set foot in a dedicated cellphone store. [Walmart][6] is selling the phone today for those comfortable with a Walmart Family Mobile plan. If you'd rather show fealty to T-Mobile itself, you'll have to swing through a Target store on or after August 26th.

Panasonic G5 mirrorless camera gets September 13th release date in Japan

[![Panasonic G5 mirrorless camera gets September 13th release date in Japan][1] ][2]

We enjoyed our short time with [Panasonic's][3] new mirrorless [G5][4] in our hands-on last month, even if it was a little on the porky side. And, if you hail from the [Land of the Rising Sun][5] and had your heart set on one of these 16-megapixel shooters, Panny's announced you'll get your chance from September 13th. We're getting dangerously close to missing the stateside launch target of August, but where the US website is showing the G5 as unreleased, availability on Amazon tells a different story. We're reaching out for confirmation on that -- as well as pricing -- and will update should we hear more.

TV Guide Mobile relaunches for iOS with a new look, links to streaming video and social networks

[![TV Guide Mobile relaunches for iOS with a new look, links to streaming video and social networks][1] ][2]

We've already seen many companion apps on mobile, but now TV Guide is diving in wholeheartedly with the next generation of its app for iOS devices. While the previous versions of [TV Guide Mobile][3] on iOS and [Android][4] let users create watchlists and get reminders, version 3.0 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch is completely redesigned to make TV watching simpler with filtering for HD-only and favorite channels, links to streaming videos from sources like Hulu Plus, HBO Go, Crackle and iTunes -- Netflix and Amazon are not on the list, although additional video sources are promised in the coming weeks. Like any good companion app in 2012 it also brings social networking features with check-ins and Twitter / Facebook integration and a trending social hot list based on what other users search for.

The downside compared to many of the apps from cable providers like [Comcast][5] or [Time Warner][6], hardware manufacturers like [TiVo][7] or even other third parties like [Dijit][8] is the inability to use it to directly change the channel, but perhaps that's in the next version. There's more details in the press release after the break, and screens in the gallery below, if you're willing to give another contender a shot at assisting your TV watching habits, the free app is available in iTunes at the source link.

Sony Xperia J - Affordable Android Smartphone Leaked

We first heard about Sony's Xperia J back in July when it was leaked online thanks to some certification spotted on the Indonesian Postel Regluarity site.

ZTE's alleged 'Blade III' smartphone gets photographed ahead of official announcement

[![ZTE's alleged 'Blade III' smartphone gets photographed ahead of official announcement][1] ][2]

Let's be honest, ZTE [isn't exactly the best][3] at keeping its upcoming devices secretly under wraps before eventually making them official -- and, well, such is the case with the latest, unannounced Blade III. Finnish retailer Verkkokauppa's currently listing [ZTE's][4] purported Blade III as a 3.5-inch (800 x 480) slab that's sporting [Ice Cream Sandwich][5], a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU (MSM7227A) and a 5-megapixel rear shooter. Still, as _FoneArena_ points out, these alleged specs go against other rumors circulating around the web, which indicate the Blade III is boasting a 4-inch display rather than the smaller sized 3.5-incher listed on the Finnish site. Whatever it may be, let's just hope ZTE's next Android smartphone doesn't come with any [backdoor woes][6].

Flickr Android app gets updated, touts refreshed UI and camera selection

[![Flickr Android app gets a muchneeded update, touts refreshed UI and camera selection][1] ][2]

[Flickr's][3] Android app has been around for [nearly a year][4] and was due for a tune-up to perform like its iOS sibling. First, a retooled UI touts a new navigation menu and the Explore section now does a better job of sorting shots according to nearby location and level of interest. In addition to the aforementioned photo library search, notifications, profile, camera and upload options fill out the rest of the main menu's tabbed options. Throughout the application, a pull down to refresh function keeps the most recent notifications and uploads at the top of the window. When the camera tab is tapped, you'll now be prompted to choose your camera or camera app of choice in order to capture the shot. Rounding out the improvements are improved overall search, the ability to edit details / metadata on pictures and HTML content in comments and descriptions. If you're looking to give the overhauled software a go, hit the source link below to snag it.

EcoXPower charges a smartphone, bicycle headlight and tail light with pedal power

[![EcoXPower charges a smartphone, bicycle headlight and tail light with pedal power][1] ][2]

[Bicycle][3] rigs for [charging][4] [cellphones][5] have lit up our radar before, but now the EcoXPower is being billed as the first device of its kind that can simultaneously juice up LED lights and a smartphone with the power of your pedaling. Packing a headlamp, a red tail light and a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, the contraption attaches to a bike's front wheel hub with the help of a universal mount. When clamped on, the apparatus' clutch engages between the velocipede's spokes so it can generate electricity. A USB adapter cable runs up the two-wheeler's fork to a water-resistant, touchscreen-friendly case that can house [iPhones][6], [Android][7] handsets and "all major GPS devices" perched atop the handlebars. Cyclists yearning to charge their electronics with the dynamo can pick one up for $99.99. Roll past the break for the full press release.

Facebook for Android app updated with messaging emoji, easy event creation and a bit more

[![Facebook for Android app updated with messaging emoji, easy event creation and a bit more][1] ][2]

If you were wondering what features would be on the way after [Facebook][3] [ditched pre-Froyo Android support for its app][4] your questions have been answered. This revision lets users easily create events from their mobiles, share photos quicker and annoy their friends across platforms thanks to the kind of emoji iOS users have been annoying each other with for ages. In the screenshot above you see the new event creation pages and messaging screen where friends can toss in the icons or a picture while chatting privately, although updating to v1.9.8 will require a manual approval since it also seeks permission to obtain your location via coarse network-based methods. Assuming you're already down with Facebook's [Open Graph][5]-enabled tendrils snaking their way throughout your digital life (and, as an existing user already allowed it access to precise GPS-based location data) that's probably not too much of an issue, hit the Google Play link below to upgrade.

HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs

[![HTC Thunderbolt, Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs ][1] ][2]

Looks like some HTC oldies are in store for Android OS goodies -- unofficially. Though Verizon's yet to publicly confirm availability, it does appear [Droid Incredible 2][3] and [Thunderbolt][4] owners ([like this sorry bastard][5]) are in store for a very real [Ice Cream Sandwich][6] upgrade. Two deodexed ROMs based on purported stock 4.0.4 builds have recently hit the forums treating eager and, in the case of that latter LTE handset, [beleaguered][7] users to a host of performance tweaks, as well as that Sense 3.6 skin. It should go without saying that you'll need to be rooted to flash either leak and, as always, the usual warnings apply: backup first and proceed at your own risk. That said, consider this your ticket past the Big Red tape.

Wireless Sensor Tags alert you to movement and temperature changes, fit on your keyring

[![Wireless Sensor Tags alert you to movement and temperature changes, fit on your keyring][1] ][2]

There's plenty of sensor gear around for [hobbyists][3] to play with, but not so many [polished products][4] for the monitoring-obsessed. Cao Gadgets is attempting to fill that niche with its functionally named Wireless Sensor Tags -- small devices which [monitor][5] movement and temperature, notifying you if anything's amiss. A [magnetometer][6] registers movement by changes in its orientation, and can inform you of door openings or similar disturbances, while the temperature triggers are based on upper or lower thresholds. The $15 sensors (or $12 if you want three or more) have a battery life that should last several years depending on their setup, but there is _one_ catch -- you also need the Tag Manager hub ($50), which plugs into your router via Ethernet. It keeps in frequent contact with any subordinates in its 200-foot range, and if after several attempts it finds one MIA, a warning can be sent in case any of your home guards have walked or fallen asleep. The tags also have inbuilt beepers which can be pinged to track down any rogue possessions they're partnered with, like your keys.

A lot of thought has been put into micromanaging the tags, which are customizable through web-based, Android or iOS apps, and will send out alerts via email, Twitter, or push notifications on slates and phones (text-to-speech is available if you're [too lazy to read][7]). If you're into your data, you can also access trigger statistics from the software, complete with graphs. The [home][8] monitoring kit is available now, and instead of crashing your browser with too many embeds, we've decided to point you to the source below for the half-dozen demo vids.
