M-GO video on-demand movie service launches, streams to PCs, Samsung and Vizio players

[![MGO video ondemand movie service launches, streams to PCs, Samsung and Vizio](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/tablet-homehires.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/05/m-go-video-on-demand-movie-service-launches-streams-to-pcs-sam/)

Rushing in the door with yet another way to rent/buy movies over the internet, M-GO is promising it's the "people friendliest" service we've seen so far. Backed by [Technicolor](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Technicolor/) and DreamWorks Animation, it's ready to stream movies PCs through their web browser, as well as connected devices preloaded with its apps including Vizio, Sony and [Intel ultrabooks](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/live-from-intels-ces-2012-press-event/). To live up to that friendly moniker, M-GO promises that if you're looking for a movie it doesn't offer, it will search other stores to find it for you, [Flixster style.](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/revamped-flixster-com-gives-one-stop-digital-movie-access-for-bo/) It also builds a profile of content you like and provides suggestions, sports an "easy as pie" interface as well as support for up to 5 profiles per account to help households browse through their preferred and owned content.

On top of that it supports Ultraviolet -- and potentially other digital lockers -- to let users access the content they've already paid for, and has licensed content from NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Relativity Media, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. We couldn't pull up our Ultraviolet content just yet when we tried it, but with an Android app and plans to show up on LG and RCA devices soon we'll probably have more opportunities to test it soon. Check after the break for the press release with all the details and a preview video, or hit the source link to give it a shot yourself.

Samsung Korea posts Galaxy S II Jelly Bean update details, but not the release date

Samsung [Galaxy S II](http://www.engadget.com/tag/galaxysii/) owners waiting for an update that adds features (instead of [taking them away](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/t-mobile-galaxy-s-ii-update-removed-universal-search/)) may not have long to wait, now that support pages for the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update -- [announced months ago](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/24/samsung-rolling-jelly-bean-toward-most-of-its-smartphone-tablet/) -- have been found on the company's Korean website. Listing details for all three local carriers, the update will arrive via KIES and change the amount of available internal memory from 12GB to 11GB. Other than the usual list of Android 4.1 features, it will also preload the Google+ and some additional Play apps while adding Samsung features like [Smart Stay](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/samsung-s-voice-smartstay-galaxy-siii/). There's no word yet on exactly when the official update will arrive (or a schedule for rollout on [US carrier editions](http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/galaxy-s-ii-for-sprint-atandt-and-t-mobile-hands-on/)), but once it's out in Korea it shouldn't take much for owners of the GT-I9100 international version to try it out as well.

First proposed Android OS mascots see the light of day, give you the crazy eye

[![First proposed Android OS mascots see the light of day, give you the crazy eye](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/red-android.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/first-android-mascots/)

Just before Page and Co. officially took the wraps off of Android in [2007](http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/05/live-coverage-of-googles-android-gphone-mobile-os-announcement/), Googler Dan Morrill was getting ready to introduce the OS to a larger swath of developers in Mountain View. In an effort to spice up his presentation to devs, Morrill drew up a gang of bots while taking a brief respite, creating what he believes were the first proposed mascots for Android. The rowdy bunch may be a far cry from the avocado-hued droid we've come to know and [turn into figurines](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/29/cubify-lets-you-skin-3d-print-your-own-personal-android/), but the "Dandroids" enjoyed a small measure of popularity within Google before Bugdroid took the limelight. Their creator unearthed the image files while cleaning up a [NAS](http://www.engadget.com/tag/NAS/) and has slung them up on Google+ for all to see. Take a gander at the adjacent gallery or jab the neighboring source link to catch a glimpse of the other bots.

Microsoft working on a fix for Halo 4 SmartGlass issues, arriving in 'the coming weeks'

[![Microsoft working on a fix for Halo 4 SmartGlass issues, set to arrive in 'the coming weeks'](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/halo4waypointwinphone8620px.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/halo-4-smartglass-windows-phone-8/)

Microsoft's [SmartGlass](http://www.engadget.com/tag/smartglass) and Microsoft's _Halo 4_ apparently aren't quite getting along on [Windows Phone 8](http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsphone8/) devices. Using SmartGlass, _Halo 4_ players can normally access their stats and other info about their android supersoldier using the long-established Waypoint service -- except for Windows Phone 8 users, apparently. A forum thread dating back to _Halo 4_'s November launch highlights the issue -- as Xbox.com forum user "Scion Eon" puts it: "Whenever I try to log into SmartGlass on my phone while playing _Halo 4_, I am immediately greeted with a message that says 'Your device is missing certain required features.'" As it turns out, Mr. Eon isn't the only one experiencing said connectivity issues -- specific to Windows Phone 8 devices -- and Microsoft's aware of the situation.

"We are aware that there is an issue with the Xbox SmartGlass experience for 'Halo Waypoint' on Windows Phone 8 devices, which may prevent users from accessing _Halo 4_ player stats," a Microsoft rep told us this afternoon. Thankfully, Redmond's also taking care of a solution. "We are actively working on a fix and expect to have a solution within the coming weeks. We appreciate your patience as this gets resolved and apologize for any inconvenience this causes," the statement reads. Of course, should you want to access _Halo 4_'s Waypoint functionality on SmartGlass before that fix, you can always use Microsoft's competitor's devices. But then who'd do that?

[Thanks Colin!]

Harman bringing trio of JBL speakers and pair of AV receivers to CES

[![Harman brings trio of JBL speakers and pair of AV receivers to CES](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/harmanlead.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/harman-CES-2013-speakers-receivers/)

[Harman](http://www.engadget.com/tag/harman) has joined several other companies in jumping the [CES](http://www.engadget.com/tag/CES2013) gun, announcing five new products it's bringing to the show. First up is the JBL Charge, a hardy Bluetooth speaker which promises an impressive 12 hours of tunes on a single charge. If you are willing to sacrifice some of that play time, you can siphon power from the internal battery to other kit via the speaker's USB port. Expected to start shipping in Q1 2013, you should be able to pick one up for around $149. Joining JBL's [OnBeat](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/harman-jbl-new-speaker-docks/) [range](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/jbl-intros-first-lightning-equipped-speaker-docks-we-go-ears-on/) are the Mini and Rumble speaker docks, which are both compatible with [Apple's Lightning connector](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-details-new-dock-connector-its-called-lightning/). The Mini is a fairly standard dock which will play and charge for up five hours on battery power, and should be available this coming March for around $149. The Rumble, however, is a little more equipped, with both Lightning and Bluetooth streaming options, as well as a 4.5-inch, "down-firing subwoofer" for bass junkies. That extra muscle is reflected in the price, though, which is likely to be $399 when it hits stores next spring.

A couple of new [Kardon-branded](http://www.engadget.com/tag/harmankardon/) A/V receivers from Harman are also coming along to CES -- the AVR 2700 and 3700. Both have multi-zone functionality, are stacked with wireless features including internet radio, AirPlay and DLNA connectivity, and can be controlled using iOS and Android apps. The AVR 2700 has eight HDMI ports and 4K video scaling for when you get round to buying that [UHDTV](http://www.engadget.com/tag/uhdtv/), as well as 7.1-channel audio (at 100 watts per channel). The AVR 3700 adds WiFi connectivity, and has 7.2 channels (at 125 watts per channel) for adding a second woofer to your setup. When they become available to purchase in Q1 2013, expect wallet damage to the tune of $799 for the 2700, or $999 for the 3700. You can get a closer look at all the Harman products in the press shots below (complete with unnecessary reflection), and if you're into PRs, there are a whole bunch awaiting you after the break.

Engadget's CES 2013 Preview: Tablets

_With CES looming like an electrically charged storm of news and announcements, it's time for us to give you our best bets on what you'll see come January. During the month of December, we'll bring you a series of CES preview posts, forecasting what you can expect when the news deluge begins. For more of what's to come, [check out our hub](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/07/engadgets-ces-2013-preview/)._

[![Engadget's CES 2013 preview Tablets](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/12/engadget-ces-2013-tablets.jpg)](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/engadgets-ces-2013-preview-tablets/)

Tablets: the _other_ living room screen. For a category that was once regarded as an odd-duck luxury for the early adopter, 2012 certainly saw the portable computing tech grow closer to becoming a true laptop alternative. With an ever-increasing number of high-resolution displays, faster multi-core processors, a range of form factors and varied price points, it seems there's now a tab for just about everyone. So while last January's CES [brought us news](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/14/ces-2012-tablet-roundup/) of 1,920 x 1,200 screens, quad-core CPUs and a proliferation of [Android Ice Cream Sandwich offerings](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ice%20cream%20sandwich,%20tablets/), the year ahead aims to take that same tack and turn it up a few notches. That said, don't expect this upcoming CES to play host to a glut of next-gen tablet reveals -- from what we gather, many major manufacturers are holding off for Mobile World Congress 2013's more focused global stage.

RCA Mobile TV Tablet combines DTV with Dyle, arrives this spring for $299

[![RCA Mobile TV Tablet combines DTV with Dyle for your viewing pleasure, arrives this spring for $299](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/mobiletvtabletrca620pxhedimg.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/rca-mobile-tv-tablet-announcement/)

The RCA DMT580D may not be memorably _named_, but the television-centric tablet stands out for other reasons: most notably, its combination of DTV and [Dyle](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Dyle/)-powered mobile TV. RCA's toting its "Mobile TV Tablet" as, "the electronics industry's first dual-tuner mobile TV" -- making your on-the-go viewings of _The View_ all the easier. Oh, and the other 130 mobile TV stations Dyle also offers certainly don't hurt; you'll be able to scoop up regular ol' digital TV signals using the tablet's telescoping antenna. It's essentially an upgrade to [RCA's previous efforts](http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/04/rca-debuts-new-line-of-portable-atsc-mobile-dtv-hybrid-televis/) in the TV-centric tablet market.

If the TV angle isn't enough for you, RCA promises a fully featured Android tablet otherwise: an 8-inch HD IPS screen, 802.11b/g/n WiFi capability, a Cortex A5 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of flash storage memory (expandable via MicroSD). Should you wish to capture the facial reactions you'll assuredly make during those daily _View_ broadcasts, front-facing and rear cameras are also part of the equation, and the whole shebang weighs in at roughly 1.4 lbs. Around four hours of battery life are expected if you're going whole hog on the TV bit, which balloons to 10 if you're just surfing the web / playing Angry Birds / etc. At $299, you'd better be _really_ into those television features -- the RCA Mobile TV Tablet arrives at retail "this coming spring."

GoPro's lineup of mount-anywhere cameras has been dazzling extreme sports enthusiasts for years. The original [HD Hero](http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/16/gopro-HD-hero-review-and-helmet-cam-face-off/) first delivered stills and wide-angle HD video in 2009, and those capabilities improved with a higher-res sensor, faster burst mode and a wider field of view in the [Hero2](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/gopro-hd-hero-2-review/). Now, GoPro has rolled out the [Hero3](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/16/gopro-hd-hero3/), which packs even greater performance (up to 4K video!) in a cube that's almost a full centimeter thinner than its predecessors.

What kind of powerful imaging gear did the company boffins shove in that diminutive package? Just how pro do videos from the new GoPro look? To find out, we took a Hero3 up in a jet, strapped it to the roof of a car and recorded a base jump out of a hot air balloon (from the safety of the basket, of course). Join us after the break to see the results and find out how we got along filming with the Hero3.

Microsoft needs to spend its Windows budget wisely in the US

WHILE WANDERING AROUND some of Southern California's computer retailers it is easy to see why Microsoft is having such a hard time shifting Windows 8. HTC's mid-range [One VX](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/03/htc-one-vx-review/) just recently made its debut on AT&T, and we now have some official word on the US debut of its slightly smaller counterpart, the LTE-equipped [One SV](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/11/htc-one-sv-uk-superlcd-lte-4g/). It will be available solely on Cricket Wireless starting January 16th, where it will set you back $349.99 off-contract. That will buy you a 4.3-inch WVGA display (of the Super LCD 2 variety), a 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, front and rear-facing cameras (5 megapixel, f/2.0 and 1.6 megapixel, f/2.2, respectively), a microSD card slot and Android 4.0 with HTC's Sense 4 interface. As you can see, it also comes in a bright Flame red color, which is the only option for the time being.

GameStick topples Kickstarter goal in 30 hours, adds XBMC and DLNA post-launch

[![GameStick topples Kickstarter goal in just over one day, adds XBMC and DLNA support postlaunch](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/playjamgamestick620pxhedimg.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/gamestick-kickstarter-funded/)

Now that PlayJam's Kickstarter project, "[GameStick](http://www.engadget.com/tag/gamestick)," is funded -- reaching and crossing it's $100K goal in around 30 hours with over 1,000 backers -- the team's turning to other news, like adding XBMC and DLNA support. That support will arrive via an "optional firmware update in September," says PlayJam CMO Anthony Johnson. That _other_ Android-based, Kickstarter-funded game console, [the Ouya](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ouya), also added XBMC functionality to the console's feature list late last summer, though it's unclear if GameStick's support includes the Android app XBMC is porting to Ouya.

But just because the GameStick is funded doesn't mean you can't still pledge dough for one yourself. The $70 tier is sold out, but backing the project for $79 or more will still get you one of the first GameSticks on the market. The project is slated to launch this April.

The Android SDK Is No Longer Free Software

New submitter tian2992 writes "The new terms for the Android SDK now include phrases such as 'you may not: (a) copy (except for backup purposes), modify, adapt, redistribute, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, or create derivative works of the SDK or any part of the SDK' among other non-Free-software-friendly terms, as noted by FSF Europe's Torsten Grote. Replicant, a free fork of Android, announced the release of Replicant SDK 4.0 based on the latest sources of the Android SDK without the new terms."

Velocity Micro unveils tiny Edge Mini desktop, Cruz D610 and Q610 tablets

[![Velocity Micro unveils tiny Edge Mini desktop, Cruz D610 and Q610 tablets](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/velocity-micro-edge-mini.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/velocity-micro-unveils-tiny-edge-mini-cruz-d610-and-q610/)

Velocity Micro [was busy](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/03/velocity-micro-edge-all-in-one-windows8/) [this December](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/31/velocity-micro-three-new-notemagix-ultrabooks/), and it's not about to let up with CES right around the corner. At the forefront of its Las Vegas launches is the Edge Mini. While we're sure some companies might [take issue](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/lenovo-intros-ideacentre-q190-htpc-new-c-series-all-in-ones/) with the PC builder's claims of having the world's smallest desktop, there's no denying that the extra-small Edge's 4 square inches of surface area and 1.5-inch thickness let it slot easily into a home theater. A Core i3 won't make the Edge Mini the [most powerful](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/24/digital-storm-bolt-stuffs-full-power-graphics-into-a-mini-gaming-pc/) tiny desktop, either, although its $499 asking price may not be an obstacle for those willing to buy the PC when it ships next week.

The tablet crowd also gets its fill with a pair of 10-inch [Cruz](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cruz/) tablets (pictured after the break). The D610 and Q610 respectively use dual- and quad-core, 1.5GHz [Allwinner processors](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/11/Allwinner-A20-A31-ARM-cortex-a7-processors/) that help keep the starting price down to $199, a company spokesperson tells us. Velocity Micro expects both Cruz models to ship toward the end of March with [Android 4.1](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/) inside.

Sprint Offers Pay As You Go Service From January 25th Onwards

While most of us out there would settle for a full contract for a smartphone in order to get the kind of steep discount that would normally not be applied if one were to pick up an unsubsidized and unlocked handset, there are others who do not need that many minutes to talk in their lives, which is where a prepaid service, or Pay As You Go comes in ... OpenCL mod for the Kindle Fire HD reveals untapped graphics potential (hands-on video)

[![If a Kindle Fire HD could run OpenCL accelerated graphics, it'd look like this handson video](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/opencl-lead-620.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/04/opencl-mod-for-the-kindle-fire-hd/)

As neat as the [Kindle Fire HD](http://www.engadget.com/tag/kindlefirehd) already is, just a few dinky tweaks could turn it into so much more -- a platform for true physics-based gaming, for example, or even for surprisingly fast photo manipulation. How come? Because both the [8.9-inch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/19/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-8.9-review/) and [7-inch](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-review-7-inch/) versions of the Android-based slate come with a graphics engine that can handle [OpenCL](http://www.engadget.com/tag/opencl) acceleration. It certainly won't work out of the box, but Amazon has been working quietly with Imagination Technologies -- the folks behind the tablet's PowerVR GPU -- to try it out. The demo after the break is subtle, perhaps, but it's fluid, detailed and goes far beyond anything that a stock device can achieve. It also proves that, in certain circumstances, OpenCL has the power to boost frame rates by 50 percent while simultaneously _lowering_ power consumption by the same proportion. Read on for more.

Epix heading to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita

iOS, Android, Google TV, [XBox](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/05/xbox-360s-new-video-services-wont-all-launch-right-away-comca/) -- heck, [Epix](http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix) even has an app for the [BlackBerry PlayPook](http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/epix-brings-its-thousands-of-movies-to-google-tv-android-roku/). So, what's surprising is not that the premium movie channel is coming to the PS3 and Vita, but that it took so long for it to happen. Soon Sony's gaming faithful will be able to download the app from the PlayStation Store and start streaming the network's sizable catalog of movies and original content. Of course, you'll have to have actually subscribe to it through your cable provider first, but you knew that already, didn't you. For more check out the PR after the break.

Apple Loses Claim For False Advertising Regarding Amazon "App Store"

An anonymous reader writes a court has dismissed Apple's allegations that Amazon's use of the "app store" phrase constituted false advertising. "Apple's efforts to protect its intellectual property sometimes result in lawsuits that leave even the most ardent of Apple fans scratching their heads. One such suit was Apple's March 2011 lawsuit against Amazon over the retailer's use of the phrase 'app store' as used in its Amazon Appstore for Android. "

After a [lackluster October](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/30/comscore-android-us-market-share-kept-growing-in-october/), the company's just-reported November smartphone market share in the US was up sharply, to 35 percent; while the spike isn't directly credited to the [iPhone 5](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/), rapidly growing availability of the company's newest smartphone certainly didn't hurt. Android was still comfortably ruling the roost at 53.7 percent, although its share was only a slight increase over October. As such, most of Apple's gain during the month came from smaller rivals' pain.

It was a more familiar story among individual phone makers. Samsung had a comfortable lead at 26.9 percent of the larger American cellphone market in November, while Apple padded its advantage over a sinking LG to hit 18.5 percent. With Motorola and HTC also on the downward slide, the US market this fall was increasingly mirroring its global counterpart, where it was really [Apple and Samsung's](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/11/idc-samsung-and-apple-rule-connected-device-share/) game to play -- others might have to be content watching from the sidelines in the future.

Android Dashboard update shows Jelly Bean on 10 percent of active hardware

[![Android Dashboard update shows Jelly Bean on 10 percent of active hardware](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/androidstats-january42013.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/03/android-dashboard-update-shows-jelly-bean-on-10-percent-of-activ/)

The last time we checked out [Google's Android Device Dashboard](http://www.engadget.com/tag/AndroidStats/), penetration of the latest version had reached 1.8 percent of active hardware. A couple of months later and Android 4.1 / 4.2 Jelly Bean is accounting for more than 10 percent of devices that accessed Google Play in the last 14 days. The share of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices also grew to represent 29.1 percent of active hardware, and while 2.3 Gingerbread still has the largest slice, it slid below half to 47.6 percent. That means developers can more confidently taking advantage of the latest APIs, but while the environment is much improved over when the [dashboard launched in 2009](http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/21/androids-device-dashboard-offers-version-distribution-insight/), those fragments still mean some hard choices on exactly what to target with apps. Google bringing YouTube Android app pairing, updated UI to more TVs

Google updated its YouTube app for Android [back in November](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/13/youtube-android-app-one-click-gtv-video/) to allow for pairing with TVs equipped with Google TV, and it looks we'll soon be seeing quite a few more sets ready to work with your smartphone or tablet. The company confirmed today that new TVs from Bang & Olufsen, LG, Panasonic and Sony will be making their debut at CES, with additional sets and set-top boxes coming from Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, Western Digital and others over the course of 2013. In related news, Google's announced that its new UI for YouTube on TV -- previously seen on the Wii U and PlayStation 3 -- will also be featured on those new devices, offering full 1080p videos and a fairly minimalist interface. You can check out a quick video of how the pairing works after the break.

Samsung rolling out Exynos security patch to UK Galaxy S III owners

[![DNP Samsung rolling out Exynos security fix to UK Galaxy S III users](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/uk-gsii.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/03/samsung-exynos-security-update/)

A few weeks back a [security exploit](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/16/security-exploit-opens-samsung-exynos-devices-to-attack/) was discovered that left owners of select Exynos-powered Samsung devices feeling uneasy. While an independent developer quickly cooked up a fix, Samsung soon [acknowledged the issue](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/19/samsung-acknowledges-exynos-security-issue/) and pledged that an official patch was in the works. [UK Galaxy S III](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/) owners can now breathe a sigh of relief, as Sammy has made good on its word and is now issuing an over-the-air update that addresses this potential security flaw. While we're happy to see Samsung actively working on this issue, there's still no word of when the company will release this fix to other devices and additional regions. Hopefully the software's ongoing European tour is a sign of things to come globally.

BBC's first companion app brings Antiques Roadshow quizzes to Android, iOS

[![BBC's first companion app arrives tied to Antiques Roadshow, brings quizzes to iOS and Android](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/antiques-roadshow-bbc-app.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/03/bbc-companion-app-launches-for-antiques-roadshow-iphone-android/)

Over in the UK TV interaction has a wider history thanks to [Red Button](http://www.engadget.com/tag/RedButton/) services, and the BBC is finally coming through on its promise to [join that experience with the internet](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/30/bbc-to-introduce-internet-connected-red-button/) as it launches its first companion app on iOS and Android. Previously tested in beta with _Frozen Planet_ and _Secret Fortune_ airings, these [apps let _Antiques Roadshow_ viewers compete against others](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/04/antiques-roadshow-app-companion/) -- whether in the same room or across the country -- as they try to guess the value of items displayed on the show. Will that be exciting enough to pull viewers away from whatever the UK equivalent of_ Sons of Anarchy_ or _The Walking Dead_ is? Maybe not, but a Red Button version launched last fall netted 1.5 million users right off the bat, and the Beeb expects to build on that more by moving to mobile devices.

The internet-to-TV hookup even goes both ways, as we experienced in [our demonstration of Connected Red Button services on TiVo](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/04/bbc-connected-red-button/) last month and viewers experienced [during the Olympics](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/04/bbc-olympic-coverage-includes-24-live-hd-channels/), so we'd expect to see even more interaction launching soon. The apps will be available later today for use with the new episode airing on the 6th. Can't wait that long for your antiquing fix? Thanks to embedded audio watermarks syncing everything up, they will also work with last week's episode (and future ones going forward) viewed on iPlayer or home recordings.

Polaroid announces 7-inch kids tablet sporting Android 4.0, looks to show it off at CES

Facebook adds voice recording to Messenger, testing VoIP service in Canada

[![Facebook adds voice recording to Messenger, testing VoIP service in Canada](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/facebook-voice-messaging.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/03/facebook-adds-voice-recording-to-messenger-testing-voip-service/)

If you're a fan of the [Facebook Messenger](http://www.engadget.com/tag/facebookmessenger) app keep your eye out for an interesting update coming down the pipe today for both the iOS and Android versions. The social network is adding the ability to record and send voice messages, up to one minute in length, to your friends. The goal isn't to create a voice mail system for Facebook, but to give users another option for interacting when typing is either impossible or inconvenient. It works much like the video feature in the company's [Poke app](http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/21/facebook-poke-app-now-available-iphone-ipod-ipad/) -- press and hold the red record button, speak your message and it'll appear in-line as part of your chat, represented by a clickable sound wave icon. Even more interesting though, is the VoIP capabilities that are being flipped on for Canadian users. It's a little buried at the moment -- hidden behind the "i" icon in the chat window -- but everyone's favorite social network is now offering a way to place free voice calls to friends. Interestingly, the platform is built on open source technology and not on its [Skype partnership](http://www.engadget.com/tag/skype,facebook/). If things go well in the land of maple trees and Mounties we imagine it wont be too long before America gets a taste of VoIP calling Facebook style.

Archos reveals Android-powered TV Connect, puts Play store on your big screen

[![Archos reveals Androidpowered TV Connect, puts Play store on your big screen](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/1-3-2013-archostcconnect.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/03/archos-reveals-android-powered-tv-connect/)

There are plenty of ways to get Android on your TV -- from smartphone [docks](http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/19/dell-mini-5-docking-station-with-hdmi-port-spotted-in-bizarre-gr/), to [dongles](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/11/smartkey-tv-hdmi-dongle/) and even the officially sanctioned Google TV. But most of them are missing something, be it a simple way to control them or access to the full Play store. Archos is aiming to solve those conundrums with its new TV Connect, an Android computer, complete with HD camera and a handheld remote with a pair pointer sticks used to simulate a multitouch screen. Under the hood is a 1.5GHz "multi core" CPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. For networking you can go old school and plug in an Ethernet line or lose the cables and rely on WiFi. The remote has more control options than you could possibly desire crammed in a form factor that's more than a little reminiscent of a certain [failed Atari console](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/22/portable-jaguar-modder-gives-ben-heck-a-run-for-his-compact-gami/). In addition to the pair of pointer sticks, there's a full QWERTY keypad, a directional pad, four game buttons, the standard Android keys and volume controls -- not to mention you can move an onscreen cursor simply by pointing the remote at your TV.

The strongest selling point of the TV Connect, however, is its unfettered access to the Google Play store. That means its vast repositories of music, movies and TV shows are available to you but, more importantly, so are the hundreds of thousands of apps like Netflix, Google Talk and Skype. The Jelly Bean running set top box will be hitting shelves in February for $130. For a bit more check out the gallery below and the PR after the break.
