First time accepted submitter Sez Zero writes "Google and ASUS have been collaborating on a co-branded 7-inch Android tablet, with a launch as early as May, according to sources, challenging low-cost rivals and the iPad with a $199-249 price tag. The fruits of the partnership, whispered to the runes readers at DigiTimes by industry sources, will take on the NOOK Tablet and the Kindle Fire, with ASUS selected for its willingness to flex to Google's requirements."

Battleheart Developer Drops Android As 'Unsustainable'

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

mr100percent writes with this excerpt from Electronista: "Battleheart's creator Mika Mobile in an update explained that it was dropping Android support. Google's platform was losing money for the company, since it spent about 20 percent of its time supporting the platform but only ever made five percent or less of the company's revenue. Much of the effort was spent on issues specific to Android, where the diversity was only creating problems rather than helping. 'I would have preferred spending that time on more content for you, but instead I was thanklessly modifying shaders and texture formats to work on different GPUs, or pushing out patches to support new devices without crashing, or walking someone through how to fix an installation that wouldn't go through,' one half of the husband and wife duo said. 'We spent thousands on various test hardware. These are the unsung necessities of offering our apps on Android.'"

Marvel Comics greets true believers with free digital copy for select print titles

[![Marvel Comics greets true believers with free digital copy for select print titles][1] ][2]

With great purchasing power apparently comes great affordability for Marvel Comics fans. Starting this June, folks who purchase any Marvel super hero comic priced at $3.99 will also get a free digital copy for [Android][3] or [iOS][4]. Examples of Marvel titles that will come with free codes include the _Amazing Spider-Man_, _Avengers_, _Captain America_, _Mighty Thor_ and _Invincible Iron Man_. The new program continues the trend of comic book publishers [invading the digital space][5] like famished planet-eaters -- Dark Horse, for instance, [recently made a deal][6] with Barnes & Noble. Similarly, DC Comics inked an agreement with Amazon, a move that got some DC titles [sent to the Phantom Zone][7] by B&N. Judging from the positive response to digital codes included in the Ultimate Comics line and Avenging Spider-Man, Marvel expects the expanded code program to act like a radioactive spider bite for comic book stores, boosting repeat visits. Feel that tingling? That's _your own_ Spidey sense telling you to swing past the break for Marvel's official PR.

According to _MobileSyrup_, a kind tipster's handed the site intel claiming the Optimus L7 will be offered as part of the [Maple Leaf Carrier's][5] "Smartphone Lite" lineup. Still, it's unclear how much it'll cost you, or when it will go on sale. To give you a quick refresh, the L7 comes packing a 4.3-inch, 480 x 800 screen and a 1GHz CPU along with [tasty ICS][6] at its core. Pricing and availability uncertainties aside, we _can_ be certain you'll have to sign the usual Canadian three-year deal with your network once the device gets an official launch.

Tether for iPhone returns as an HTML5-powered subscription service (video)

[![][1] ][2]

We're still not sure how iTether [temporarily snuck into the App Store the first time around][3], but the developers behind that software have returned with a new version that skirts Apple's guidelines entirely. While Tether.com has standard apps available for BlackBerry and Android users, the new approach on iOS relies on creating an ad-hoc network from a PC, and then visiting the appropriate webpage on the iPhone. Log in to the website, and the company's "patent-pending" software does the job of tying the two connections together wirelessly through the magic of HTML5, no jailbreaking or other hackery needed. The cost for the service is $30 a year, although it's currently available for the first year at $15 -- no free trials, and of course what happens to your data plan is between [you and your carrier][4]. Check out the video above for a demonstration or hit the company's website for more details.

Google hastily updates Play Store, fixes broken Market on Motorola devices

[![][1] ][2]

Motorola Droid RAZR fans were left out in the cold when Google decided to pull the wraps off its [revamped content hub][3]. The new Play Store app didn't seem to bond too well with Motorola's Blur OS skin, leaving phones scanning desperately for a non-existent Android Market and trapping users out of the app version of the store. Google's got on it quickly though, with a new Google Play update out now, righting what was once wrong. According to _Droid Life_, wiping the new hub's application data in settings should coax the update out instantly. And you'd think the two would [talk][4] about these things.

Nielsen report finds 56 percent of US households have a modern game console, total gaming time up seven percent

[![][1] ][2]

[Nielsen][3] is out with its annual survey of video game use in the US today, and it's found that gaming continues to be on the rise across the board. That includes a seven percent increase in total gaming time compared to the previous year (apparently due largely to increases in mobile and tablet gaming), and an increase in modern console ownership from 50 percent of households to 56 percent; that includes so-called 7th generation consoles like the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It also found the number of cross-platform gamers be on the upswing, with 24 percent responding that they play on two or more of a console, PC, tablet or mobile device (compared to 17 percent previously). Looking at mobile gaming, specifically, Nieslen found that while iOS gaming tended to be distributed fairly evenly across all age groups, Android gaming proved to be far more popular among those aged 25-34 than any other group.

A few other tidbits: 65 percent of consoles are located in the living room, online shopping for games is up while other channels continue to decline, and streaming video continues to be a growing secondary use for game consoles (particularly on the Wii, where it accounts for 33 percent of console usage, compared to roughly 15 percent on both the Xbox 360 and PS3).

Google Works On Kinect-Like Interface For Android

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

bizwriter writes "A patent filing made public last week suggests that Google may be trying to implement a motion-detection interface, like Microsoft Kinect, for portable electronic gadgets. The patent application is for technology that turns a mobile device's camera into a motion-input system. In other words, it could be goodbye to fingerprints and streaks on the front of your tablet or smartphone. Google could incorporate such a feature into Android in general or keep it as a differentiating advantage for its acquisition of Motorola."

Is Onlive Pirating Windows and Will It Cost Them?

An anonymous reader writes "When Onlive, the network gaming company, started offering not just Microsoft Windows but Microsoft Office for free on the iPad, and now on Android, it certainly seemed too good to be true. Speculation abounded on what type of license they could be using to accomplish this magical feat. From sifting through Microsoft's licenses and speaking with sources very familiar with them, the ugly truth may be that they can't."

Sony Xperia S available now from Three UK

[![Sony Xperia S available now from Three UK][1] ][2]

Sony's new Xperia flagship has arrived. While we've already revealed our thoughts on the
[S model][3], UK customers can now lay their hands on one -- provided they're willing to go with data-happy [Three][4]. Expect to pay £370 for the device on pay-as-you-go, while you'll need to splash out at least £30 per month for the contract option. You'll also have to make the trek to the nearest bricks-and-mortar outlet to pick one up -- the phone remains non-existent on the carrier's online store.
