Nike+ FuelBand: Possibly a Big Security Hole For Your Life

MojoKid writes "Nike+ FuelBand is a $149 wristband with LED display that tracks your daily activity, tells you how many calories you've burned, lets you know how much fuel you have left in the tank, and basically keeps track of 'every move you make.' If you think that sounds like a privacy nightmare waiting to happen, it pretty much is. A source directly connected to Nike reported an amusing, albeit startling anecdote about a guy who got caught cheating on his girlfriend because of the Nike+ FuelBand. 'They shared their activity between each other and she noticed he was active at 1-2AM, when he was supposed to be home.' That's just one scenario. What if the wristband gets lost or stolen? How much data is actually stored on these sorts of devices? And remember, you're syncing it to the cloud with an iOS or Android app."

Acer CloudMobile review: an ambitious Android phone that arrived a little too late

Acer CloudMobile review: an ambitious Android phone that arrived a little too late

It's been a while since we last took a look at a [smartphone from Acer](http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/acer-liquid-mt-review/). Today's offering -- the S500 CloudMobile -- however, might not be all that unfamiliar, having first met our eyes way back at MWC in spring. This time around Acer presents us with a leaner, slicker, much more design-conscious handset, one that isn't just about the pretty looks, either.

With a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera and a 720p display, all for £289 SIM-free, it's pitched against similarly specced phones like the [HTC One S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/02/htc-one-s-review/). In short, it's yet another alternative for people seeking a full-featured smartphone, except it comes _without_ the pocket-draining price tag. More importantly for Acer, however, is the chance to get back onto people's smartphone radars. So, now that the CloudMobile has gently drifted over our shores, does it have us looking to the sky, or putting on our raincoats of indifference? Read on to find out.

A few months back Sprint's Android customers gained the option to [charge Google Play purchases to their monthly wireless bill](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/sprint-android-users-get-carrier-billing-in-google-play/). In an effort to keep the carrier billing party going, the Now Network will soon be adding this option for [Spotify Premium](http://www.engadget.com/tag/spotifypremium) customers. An anonymous tipster has shared with us that starting on November 11th, Sprint's Android clientele will be able to add the music streaming service's $10 monthly charge to their bill. While we're sure that some customers will take advantage of this new option, we can't help but long for the good old days when people could bill a new phone to their account. Ah, Sprint giveth and [taketh away](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/29/sprint-set-to-end-bill-to-account-program-on-october-5th-all-eq/).

Why You Can't Build Your Own Smartphone: Patents

jfruh writes "In the mid-00s, more and more people started learning about Android, a Linux-based smartphone OS. Open source advocates in particular thought they could be seeing the mobile equivalent of Linux -- something you could download, tinker with, and sell. Today, though, the Android market is dominated by Google and the usual suspects in the handset business. The reason nobody's been able to launch an Android empire from the garage is fairly straightforward: the average smartphone is covered by over 250,000 patents."

Sony ships Xperia advance to the US, offers unlocked ruggedness for $300 or less

[![Sony ships Xperia advance to the US, offers unlocked ruggedness for $300 ](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/sony-xperia-go-hands-on-yellow.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/09/sony-ships-xperia-advance-to-the-us-offers-unlocked-ruggedness/)

Americans who likes the [Sony Xperia go's](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/xperia-go-xperia-advance-hands-on/) approach to lifeproof smartphone design won't have to live vicariously through their overseas friends anymore. Keeping up its recent habit of selling [unlocked versions](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/sony-xperia-tipo-and-tipo-dual-reach-the-us-in-unlocked-form/) of niche devices, Sony is selling the toughened smartphone in the US as the Xperia advance. The 3.5-inch handset won't initially be a surprise to those who've had a peek at an international version, right through to the out-of-the-box Android 2.3 installation -- you'll be sitting in line for a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich or [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/sony-to-start-xperia-upgrades-to-jelly-bean-by-mid-q1/#comments) like everyone else. For most, the advantage will rest in a dust- and water-resistant phone that can wield its 3G on AT&T or Straight Talk while being free to use at least basic GSM calling abroad. Be sure to shop around before committing to an Xperia advance, though. While Newegg's $250 price makes a reasonable case, the $300 official cost has our minds wandering to the much more powerful (if more fragile) [Nexus 4](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-4-review/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+weblogsinc%2Fengadgetmobile+(Engadget+Mobile)).

Jelly Bean update starts rolling out to Verizon's Droid RAZR M

We know [not all Motorola handsets](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/motorola-phones-no-jelly-bean-upgrade/) will be lucky enough to be on the receiving end of Mountain View's Jelly Bean OS, but the [Droid RAZR M](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/motorola-droid-razr-m-review-a-very-good-ics-handset-in-a-small/), on the other hand, is now being prepped to get a taste of Android 4.1. According to Verizon, the 4.3-inch, Kevlar-sporting device can now be added to the [growing list](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/jelly-bean-sprint-galaxy-s3/) of devices running [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/), with the carrier noting that the fresh update will officially start rolling out to customers today "in phases." Meanwhile, Big Red also says an option to download the upgrade manually is coming, though that alternative won't be available until later next week. Regardless, proud RAZR M owners can expect a slew of under-the-hood improvements, new features such as [Google Now](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/03/google-now-gets-an-epic-47-question-interrogation/) and compatibility with [ISIS Mobile Wallet](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/22/isis-nfc-payments-go-live-in-austin-and-salt-lake-city/) (where the NFC-based payment system's live, of course). Barnes & Noble Nook HD+ tenatively rooted for the paper UI-phobic (video)

There's no doubt that Barnes & Noble in love with the paper-like interface of the [Nook HD+](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/barnes-and-noble-announces-nook-hd-9-inch-tablet-we-go-hands-on/). Not all of its new owners are quite so taken with the retro chic, with the proof being _XDA-Developers_ member verygreen's early root for the Android tablet (and possibly its [ HD cousin](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/30/nook-hd-review/)). The preliminary code is enough to offer a glimpse of a more digital interface as well as teasers of a [CyanogenMod](http://www.engadget.com/tag/CyanogenMod/) port and booting from SD cards. Before racing to use the instructions at the source, be aware that the root's usefulness may vary wildly in the near future -- as of this writing, a familiar defense mechanism dating back to the [Nook Color](http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/nook-color-review/) has kicked in that rejects the root and restores itself to factory stock after eight failed boot attempts. That there's a root at all will nonetheless be a comfort in the long run to those who like the idea of a budget tablet without the enforced nostalgia for dead trees.

LG Optimus L9 review: an affordable entry-level Android handset for T-Mobile

[![DNP LG Optimus L9 review An entrylevel steal](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/optimusl9intro.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/09/lg-optimus-l9-review/)

Just when we thought LG was done with its Optimus L-series for the year, the Korean company surprised us with the [LG Optimus L9](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/09/lg-optimus-l9-for-t-mobile-hands-on/), which replaces the [Optimus L7](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/lg-optimus-l7-review/) at the low-end range. The L-series devices are positioned as LG's stylish yet affordable line of entry- to mid-level phones, so they definitely don't compare to the company's quad-core offerings like the [4X HD](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/19/lg-optimus-4x-hd-in-white/) or the [Optimus G](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/lg-optimus-g-review-a-quad-core-powerhouse-with-nexus-aspiratio/). Instead, the L9 runs Android 4.0 and boasts a 4.5-inch qHD display along with a dual-core 1 GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor and 5-megapixel camera. At $79.99 with a two-year contract on T-Mobile, it's designed to appeal to shoppers on a budget. But is it a good buy? Let's find out.

The Daily App: Waze Hurricane Edition For iOS, Android

According to developer Waze , more than 30 million people have turned to its like-named crowdsourcing navigation app for Android and iOS for help finding the best route from point A to point B. Its large user base was seen as an opportunity by the White House and FEMA to aid with the gas shortages left in the wake of hurricane Sandy.

Bungled Mobile Bet Will Be Ballmer's Swan Song

snydeq writes "'If Windows 8 and the Surface tablet flop, you'll see a shareholder revolt that will send Steve Ballmer packing by this time next year,' writes InfoWorld's Bill Snyder. 'First it was the netbook, then it was the Ultrabook. Microsoft, Intel, and the PC makers keep looking for a way to convince buyers they don't need an iPad or Android tablet. Neither initiative gained much traction, so Microsoft bet big on Windows 8 and the Surface. ... Maybe we're wrong, and buyers will decide that the new OS and the Microsoft's first serious venture into hardware are what they want. It would be a huge boost for the industry if it happens, but I'm not optimistic. ... There's been a string of bad quarters, and the stock has been frozen for nine years. At some point -- I think we're getting really close -- investors are going to demand a shakeup. When they do, it's going to be good-bye, Ballmer."

Couple of questions. Is it Friday yet? The Engadget Podcast tells us that it is. And, where's it at? Two podcasters and a microphone, _that_'s where it's at, which _was_ at AOL HQ in NYC, and is now in your ear via HTTP. Let's do this. If we don't, the hurricanes have won.

Like its [Sunshine State neighbors](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/23/apple-ipad-mini-event-roundup/), Google also had a gadget arsenal to unveil this fall. The folks in Mountain View trotted out the latest duo, the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10, without a huge press event a few days ago. In this week's issue of [our tablet mag](http://www.engadget.com/tag/distro), we put these [Android](http://www.engadget.com/tag/jelly+bean) advocates through their paces to see if they live up to the Nexus moniker. We also offer in-depth musings on the [WP8](http://www.engadget.com/tag/wp8)-packing Nokia 920 and visit Lockheed Martin to catch a glimpse of how that outfit is prepping for the future with the help of aging tech. Military-style rucksacks occupy Eyes-On, Visualized is all about cosmic self-portraits and M.C. Schmidt of Matmos handles the Q&A. GLBenchmark rats out possible Acer Iconia Tab A220 with Tegra 3, Jelly Bean

[![GLBenchmark rats out possible Acer Iconia Tab A220 with Tegra 3, Jelly Bean](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/acer-iconia-tab-220-11-09-12-01.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/09/glbenchmark-rats-out-possible-acer-iconia-tab-a220-with-tegra-3/)

Device testing site _[GLBenchmark](http://www.engadget.com/tag/GLBenchmark/)_ has a knack for sniffing out [real](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/31/samsung-galaxy-premier-official/) products [before](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/22/samsung-galaxy-premier-rumor-glbenchmark/) manufacturers are ready to parade them, so our ears perked up when we saw a certain Acer Iconia Tab A220 pop up on its list. According to system and test specs, the alleged slate of unknown dimensions would flaunt Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, along with a 1280 x 752 screen resolution and quad-core, 1.3GHz Tegra CPU. If such a device proved to have a 7-inch screen or so, that would make it a possible Nexus 7 wannabe, giving a zippier, higher-res option to the [A110](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/acer-iconia-tab-a110-comes-to-europe-this-fall-with-jelly-bean/). Of course, benchmarks are easy enough to fake, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for any clues of the more [concrete](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/nexus-4-leaked-on-video/) variety.

Google kicks Xperia S Android Open Source Project out of its nest, Sony takes it under its wing (video)

[![Google kicks Xperia S Android Open Source Project out of its nest, Sony takes it under its wing (video)](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/sony-xperia-s-aosp.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/09/sony-xperia-s-android-open-source-project/)

After just under three months of development, Google's wrapped up its [experimental work](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/18/android-open-source-project-targets-sony-xperia-s-wants-to-get/) on bringing the [Sony Xperia S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/08/sony-xperia-s-review/) into the [Android Open Source Project](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/02/updated-verizon-galaxy-nexus-jelly-bean-binaries-added-to-aosp/) fold. According to Sony, AOSP Technical Lead Jean-Baptiste Queru considers the effort a [success](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/sony-posts-binaries-to-back-googlers-aosp-project-for-xperia-s/), but the device is being taken off the project's roadmap so Mountain View can focus on its own hardware. Currently, an AOSP build boots on the Xperia S hardware with support for SD-Cards, Wi-Fi and its built-in sensors. Audio and the phone's modem are also operational, but they require proprietary binaries [Hirai and Co.](http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/01/sony-confirms-kazuo-hirai-as-new-president-and-ceo/) can't publish just yet. Work on polishing the handset's vanilla Android experience isn't over, however. Sony has moved the code to its [GitHub](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/22/github-windows-client/) account and is welcoming developers to pitch in and help with the open source effort. For more details and to see what code has already been laid down, tap the second source link or check out the video of the smartphone in action below.

Pulse 3.0 update for iOS and Android brings new design, better search and more

[![Pulse 30 update to iOS and Android brings new design and features](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/pulse.png) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/09/pulse-3-0-update/)

[Pulse](http://engadget.com/tag/pulse) might have launched that [browser-based app](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/09/pulse-reader-browser-app-IE10/) back in August, but most of its customers still use its mobile app. Lucky for them, both iOS and Android versions of the app have been updated to Pulse 3.0. The update promises a sleeker and more user-friendly interface, along with a new category sidebar, a search feature that lets you cull news from a wider variety of sources (from Tumblr, Youtube, Reddit, Facebook, Google, Flickr and Blekko just to name a few), infinite scrolling, and unlimited pages. The new iOS app is now universal and can be used across all iOS devices -- previous versions were divided into iPhone and iPad camps. On the Android side, users get a redesigned Pulse widget that displays top stories in a resizable view. Customizable notifications on both platforms will ensure you always stay on top of the news -- perhaps _now_ you can finally score a win at your favorite pub's quiz night.

MojoKid writes "Despite the fact that I've been using Windows 8 for the past three weeks, I somehow managed to overlook a rather stark feature in the OS: ads. No, we're not talking about ads cluttering up the desktop or login screen (thankfully), but rather ads that can be found inside of some Modern UI apps that Windows ships with. That includes Finance, Weather, Travel, News and so forth. On previous mobile platforms, such as iOS and Android, seeing ads inside of free apps hasn't been uncommon. It's a way for the developer to get paid while allowing the user to have the app for free. However, while people can expect ads in a free app, no one expects ads in a piece of software that they just paid good money for."

Humble Bundle introduces Sword & Sworcery to Android, packed with five other games

[![Humble Bundle introduces Sword & Sworcery to Android, packed with five other games](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/humbleandroidbundle4hedimg620px.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/08/humble-android-bundle-4/)

Are you tired of your antagonistic friend Kevin berating you for not having played Capybara and Jim Guthrie collaboration [_Sword & Sworcery_](http://www.joystiq.com/game/superbrothers-sword-and-sworcery-ep)? "You've never played _Sword & Sworcery_? Dude, you should probably play _Sword & Sworcery_," he says, in his mocking tone. Well enough of that -- today is your first chance to snag _Sword & Sworcery_ on your Android device for a potentially _very_ low price. That price, of course, is up to you, as _Sword & Sworcery_ is just one of six excellent games included in [the fourth Humble Android Bundle](http://www.humblebundle.com/), which launches today. Paying any amount nets you not just _Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery EP_, but also _Waking Mars_, _Eufloria_, _Crayon Physics Deluxe_, and _Splice_. Paying over the (variable) average amount will also get you a copy of (gorgeous) adventurer _Machinarium_. Beyond just Android, you'll also get copies on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux (pay $1 or more and you'll even get [Steam](http://www.engadget.com/tag/steam) keys for each game) -- it's a pretty great deal. Even better? That money goes to charity! Just think how good that'll feel to rub in that jerk Kevin's face.

Melotweet: Evian makes Twitter musical, encourages you to buy water (video)

We do love quirky [iPad apps](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/29/brian-eno-scope/) that help us make [music in unusual ways](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/30/starry-night-app/), and this is the first we've seen that turns Twitter into part of that process. Melotweet is a promotional app from Evian*, that turns your Tweets into a series of droplets that you can bounce off objects to make the sort of plinky-plonky music that compels you into buying French mineral water. It's available for free on iOS or Android devices, and you can see the app in action in the video we've got for you after the break.

* Other waters are available.

You're in luck, as the Android 4.1.1 update Samsung promised [back in September](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/24/samsung-rolling-jelly-bean-toward-most-of-its-smartphone-tablet/) has touched-down in Deutschland. GroupMe moves up to v4.0, embraces the iPad

[![GroupMe moves up to v40, embraces the iPad](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/groupme-ipad-more.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/08/groupme-moves-up-to-v4/)

[Group messaging](http://www.engadget.com/tag/group+messaging/) service [GroupMe](http://howareyou.mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/11/groupmes-group-messaging-app-demoed-at-google-i-o-complete-wit/) has just been bumped up to version 4.0, and now plays well with the iPad. The refresh may not be as profound as the [last big one](http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/groupme-3-0-goes-international-and-cross-platform-delivers-mass/), but brings with it a slew of design revamps, including Facebook app-inspired side drawers, bigger images and avatars, and centered chats. In addition, the app also allows sharing location using maps, inviting people to groups using URLs and rejoining previously abandoned groups. BlackBerry and Windows Phone users of the app can't board the freshly-painted bus just yet as the update is only available on iOS for now, while those on Android can get a taste via a beta that needs to be sideloaded atop the older version. There are [other services](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/viber-symbian-lumia-upgrade/) vying for your attention too of course, with [WP8's Rooms](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/29/windows-phone-8-rooms-give-every-group-its-private-space/) already open and RIM [promising big things](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/25/bbm-for-blackberry-10/) on BB10. However, if this sounds like what you covet, use the source links below to get in on the action.
