Ask Engadget: best heavy-duty cloud-storage solution?

[![Image][1] ][2]

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's [Ask Engadget][3] inquiry is from is from is from Joe, who needs to backup half a terabyte of data to the cloud, as you do. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at **_ask [at] engadget [dawt] com_**.

> "I'm looking for an online backup solution for between 100GB, up to 500GB of data. New options are popping up everywhere recently, but what's the best cloud storage backup solution that'd allow for easy drag-and-drop backup, syncing across multiple computers both Mac and Windows, access from Android devices and at a reasonable price? Thanks!"

Well, he doesn't want much, does he? Just world-class storage, universal device access and all for a rock-bottom price. There's plenty of contenders in this particular competition, from [Dropbox][4] all the way through to, erm, [Box][5]. It's kinda clear that Joe's not just backing up his holiday photos, so even enterprise-level offerings are worth suggesting. Still, the floor's now open to you, so fire away.

More Malicious Apps Found On Google Play

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

suraj.sun writes "We've seen quite a few Android malware discoveries in the recent past, mostly on unofficial Android markets. There was a premium-rate SMS Trojan that not only sent costly SMS messages automatically, but also prevented users' carriers from notifying them of the new charges, a massive Android malware campaign that may be responsible for duping as many as 5 million users, and an malware controlled via SMS. Ars Technica is now reporting another Android malware discovery made by McAfee researcher Carlos Castillo, this time on Google's official app market, Google Play, even after Google announced back in early February that it has started scanning Android apps for malware. Two weeks ago, a separate set of researchers found malicious extensions in the Google Chrome Web Store that could gain complete control of users' Facebook profiles. Quoting the article: 'The repeated discoveries of malware hosted on Google servers underscore the darker side of a market that allows anyone to submit apps with few questions asked. Whatever critics may say about Apple's App Store, which is significantly more selective about the titles it hosts, complaints about malware aren't one of them.'"

HTC Golf allegedly appears in press shot sporting ICS and Sense 4

[![Image][1] ][2]

The HTC Golf, as it's known by codename, has been rumored to be in the works for quite some time now, but today marks our first virtual encounter with the device. Thanks to a leaked press image acquired by _PocketNow_, we can finally get an idea of what HTC's alleged entry-level slab may look like. Aside from being coated with a [fresh version of Sense][3], the 3.5-inch Golf is also said to be packing an underwhelming 480 x 320 display, a single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage (expandable via microSD). Additionally, word on the web has the Golf as being an eventual member of the outfit's [Wildfire][4] family, though we'd hold off on giving it a different dub just yet. Either way, perhaps this one will be good enough to wave goodbye to that [ChaCha][5] of yours.

HTC launches trio of Dragons in China, Ice Cream Sandwich on all

[![HTC launches trio of Dragons in China, Ice Cream Sandwich on all][1] ][2]

HTC's been far from quiet since [unveiling its One series][3] to the masses, and today the company's continuing the trend by launching three new devices in China. This trio makes up HTC's [Dragon lineup][4], which our partners at Engadget China first met at [MWC][5]. Leading the way is the 4-inch HTC VT T328t for China Mobile, featuring [Sense 4][6], an S-LCD, WVGA screen, a 1GHz CPU alongside 512MB of RAM, the famed Beats Audio and of course, it's running a flavor of [Android ICS][7]. As for the VC T328d (Telecom) and [V T328w][8] (Unicom), they're both rocking similar specs as the VT model, with the exception of dual-SIM card slots on each. All three Dragons are expected to be available by month's end, but save for the T328w costing 1999 yuan (about $120), pricing remains a mystery.

HTC One X gets unofficial power management fix, boosts battery life 10 to 20 percent

[![Image][1] ][2]

Somewhere along mike1986's development of Android Revolution HD, a custom ROM for the [HTC One X][3], he found that something amiss with the smartphone's stock system -- its Tegra 3 power management software didn't function properly. According to the developer, an app known as NvCPLSvc.apk was misplaced in the /system/bin folder, rather than its proper destination of /system/app. Along with the custom ROM, mike1986 has released the fix as a separate bundle, which is detailed in the source below. To apply the patch, users must push the new APK to their handset via ADB, and then alter the file's permissions. Unless you're seriously hindered by your phone's battery life, however, it seems safe to wait for an official update from HTC. On the upside, users report an battery life increase in the neighborhood of 10 to 20 percent once with the fix in place, and we can only hope that all users will soon benefit from similar gains.

[Thanks, Nitin]

Oracle and Google Spar Over Whether Programming Languages Can Be Copyrighted

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

pcritter writes "With the Oracle v. Google trial date set for next Monday, the Judge has asked Google and Oracle to take a position on whether a programming language is copyrightable. This presumably relates to whether Google violated copyright by using a variant of the Java language and its APIs in the Android framework. Oracle, who thinks it can be, has used J.R.R. Tolkein's Elvish language as an examples (PDF) of a language that can be copyrighted. Google disagrees (PDF)."

PSA: Sony details ICS rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones, Nordic regions to get first dibs

[![][1] ][2]

Good news for all you owners of 2011 edition [Xperia][3] smartphones -- Sony's _Xperia Product Blog_ has just confirmed that the devices will begin receiving a tasty upgrade to Android [Ice Cream Sandwich][4]. The update is set to first rollout in the Nordic countries of Norway (naturally), Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland -- specifically for the Xperia arc S, ray and neo V -- followed by an expansion into other markets within the next "four to six weeks." Don't fret if you don't own one of the aforementioned devices, though, as Sony has noted that near the end of May it should have ICS ready for the Xperia arc, Play, active, neo mini, mini pro, pro and Sony Ericson Live. If you're hungering for more specific information on when you'll be able to update your device, you'll have to keep it posted to the source links below in the meantime.

HTC One V review

[![HTC One V review][1] ][2]

It's the other One. While HTC's [One X][3] and [One S][4] jostle over which has the more potent processor, and customers [weigh][5] high-definition screens against high-science coatings, the One V has held back. Quite rightly, as this phone has no delusions of flagship grandeur. Negri Electronics has lent us an off-gray HTC One V to try out, although it will also be available in a black finish. With a nod to HTC's design past, a now relatively modest 3.7-inch screen and a ho-hum single-core 1GHz processor, the phone's looking to capture first-time smartphone buyers, along with anyone looking for a reasonably priced upgrade. For the money -- around $346 (£229) -- they'll get the latest version of Android topped by a slightly tweaked version of HTC's [Sense 4][6] skin. Is this the new benchmark for entry-level smart phones? Can a such a weedy processor handle Android 4.0? And what's with that chin? We'll answer all those questions and more after the break.

Cowon Plenue Z2: US pricing, availability and hands-on impressions

[![cowon plenue z2][1] ][2]

Just mention the company's name, and a pair of things come to mind: world-beating sound quality, and above-average prices. Such is life when you're [Cowon][3], which has informed us that its Plenue Z2 portable media player will be shipping to the US of A in May. Based on details shared to us from a Cowon spokesperson, "_early_ May" is the targeted release window, which makes sense given the unit's [FCC debut][4] back in December of 2011. We've learned that it'll ship in 16GB (white only) and 32GB (black only) sizes, with prices set for $279.99 and $319.99 in order of mention. As for specs? Glad you asked. Rather than relying on one of Cowon's proprietary operating systems, the Z2 will ship with Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), while measuring 62.8- x 116.5- x 11.8-millimeters, weighing 116 grams and boasting a 3.7-inch (800 x 480) capacitive touchpanel.

On the audio side, you'll get a typical 20Hz to 20,000Hz frequency range, 29mW + 29mW maximum outlet and a 95dB signal-to-noise ratio. There's also an HDMI output, a microSD expansion slot, built-in FM radio tuner, 802.11b/g/n WiFi module, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and an internal microphone. The outfit claims that this guy can last some 22 hours when playing back music alone, while video junkies will see 8.5 hours of their favorite _Family Guy_ clips before needing a rejuvenation session. Not surprisingly, the Z2 also supports a smorgasbord of file formats, including AVI, WMV, ASF, MP4, MKV, MPG, DAT, 3GP -- tired yet? -- DivX, XviD, H.264, WMA, OGG, PMC and FLAC. We managed to grab hold of a unit prior to its launch here in the States; head on past the break to hear our take.

Former RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie's very different rescue plan revealed

[![Image][1] ][2]

Sources close to former RIM co-CEO [Jim Balsillie][3] have revealed his plans to save the company before he was shown the door, a plan that _didn't _involve handsets. He'd entered into talks with [AT&T][4], [Verizon][5] and several European carriers to offer them use of the company's [BlackBerry-exclusive network][6] to provide limited data plans to featurephone users that included social networking and [BBM][7] -- with the aim of reducing the cellphone operators data burden and coaxing users to upgrade to smartphones. The company was working on [Mobile Fusion][8]; software that allowed enterprise and government users on iOS and Android devices to join RIM's system, which reportedly earns the company $1 billion per quarter. However, while talks progressed, company execs grew nervous and ousted him in favor of [Thorsten Heins][9] with a mandate to focus on [BB10][10] and [new devices][11] rather than turning RIM into a service company. However, given that it's still losing money on its handset business, Heins has reopened the door to Balsillie's plan. It's just a shame Balsillie himself is keeping quiet, as we'd love to hear his thoughts in an executive-level edition of [_How Would you Change_][12].

Time Warner and Verizon begin selling bundled packages just to annoy regulators

[![Time Warner and Verizon begin selling][1] ][2]

[Verizon's][3] special relationship with the cable houses deepened yesterday as it started to sell bundled mobile and land-line packages with [Time Warner Cable][4], like it does with [Comcast][5]. Residents in various parts of Ohio, Kansas City and Raleigh, North Carolina can sign up and receive a $200 prepaid debit card as a reward for their custom. However, the partnership is raising regulatory concerns about Big Red's business practices, with the [Justice Department][6] weighing up if they're anti-competitive. Worse still, the FCC has yet to [ratify][7] that [$3.6 billion spectrum][8] deal, meaning that both parties could still be off to the tailors to be fitted for a federal lawsuit.

Now, [Windows 8][4] tablet developers -- or anyone, for that matter -- can test their apps and play with the Microsoft's Metro interface from within the confines of Apple's ubiquitous tablet. The functionality is made possible by [Splashtop][5], which is known for its remote desktop apps that are currently available for Android and iOS. It seems that a good amount of effort went into this application, known as the Win8 Metro Testbed, which offers the same swipe capabilities that will be available on a native system. This includes the ability to swipe from the left to switch apps, swipe from the right to reveal the Charms menu, and pull down from the top to close an application. Splashtop's Win8 Metro Testbed is currently available for a promotional $24.99 in the iTunes App Store, whereafter it will sell for $49.99. You'll find the full PR and a quick video tour of the app's functionality after the break.

Zero-Permission Android Applications

There's been a lot of research in the Android security space. The most notable examples are Jon Oberheide's fake Twilight app, Georgia Weidman's SMS bot, and the numerous clever root exploits.

Boeing to launch super secure Android phone, hopes it takes off

[![Boeing to launch super secure Android phone, will it take off?][1]][2]You know what we've always wondered? Why doesn't [Boeing][3] just hurry up and release a phone? Joking aside, this is really happening. The news comes via _National Defense Magazine_ which reports that the airplane manufacturer is developing an Android handset which will have strong security credentials. Currently dubbed "the Boeing phone" we hope the firm puts more thought into its aircraft than its project code names. Before you start folding out your green, however, be warned that despite running Google's popular OS, and being a cellular device, the price-point is still likely to be more jumbo jet than paper plane, with a Boeing exec pointing out that competitor offerings typically float around the $15-20,000 mark. He goes on to point out that it won't cost as much as this, but will still likely be out of our reach back here in coach. No word on any sort of specification at the minute, but if you fancy yourself as a high-flyer (or more likely, you work in defense) keep an eye out for this landing later on this year. Now, what if Samsung made a plane..?

Canonical prepping to launch Ubuntu as smartphone OS?

[![Canonical prepping to launch Ubuntu as smartphone OS?][1] ][2]

Crawling the job posting boards over at [Canonical][3] turns up a pretty interesting position, one for a Business Development Manager (Ubuntu Phone OS). Now, we're not quite ready to jump to any conclusions here, but the wording of the listing is quite intriguing. The group is looking for a "business development lead to engage and develop strong relationships with industry partners in the run up to the launch of Ubuntu as a smartphone operating system," with the goal of "establish[ing] a commercial ecosystem around Ubuntu as a smartphone OS." Does this mean that [Ubuntu][4] is preparing to take on Android and iOS in the battle for [smartphone supremacy][5] (or, more likely, take on Windows Phone in a competition of also rans)? Honestly, we're not sure. The wording is quite vague, and it could simply be the company is [referring][6] to [Ubuntu for Android][7]. We've contacted Canonical for comment and we'll update if we get any clarification.

[Thanks, Mo]

Pebble smartwatch raises $100,000 in two hours, retires on a beach

[![Pebble smartwatch raises $100,000 in two hours, retires on a beach][1] ][2]

It always pleases us when interesting Kickstarter projects [do well][3]. Especially ones that fly as well as this. Just two hours after launching, the Pebble watch from Allerta landed $100,000 in pledges. Two. Hours. When you consider the phone-friendly e-paper timepiece was being offered at $115 a pop, that's a lot of individual supporters, and therefore pre-orders to fulfill. Of course, we like to think we played a [small part][4] in this story, but the credit ultimately has to lie with the product developers themselves, who clearly captured people's imaginations. And then some. At time of writing, the tally's run to well over $1 million with 36 days still to go.

LogMeIn branches out from its remote desktop roots, intros Cubby cloud sharing service

[![Image][1] ][2]

Ready for yet another option in world of [cloud storage][3] services? [LogMeIn][4] today announced it's ready to get in on the remote storage action with its own offering, built atop its Gravity Data Service, dubbed Cubby. Currently in beta, Cubby allots you 5GB of storage in the cloud, while allowing you to turn your Mac, PC and any folders into "virtual cubbies." You'll be able to sync selected data between your choice of devices and even share access (read-only if needed) to specific cubbies for collaborative efforts -- and although the service is free, there's no limit on how much data you can move between your machines. Better yet, iDevices and Androids are also supported via LogMeIn's free Cubby apps. If you've been looking for another option aside from the likes of [Pogoplug][5] and [Dropbox][6], you can request an invite to the service by hitting up the source link below. If you'd like more details in the meantime, check out the press release after the break.

PSA: Sony SmartWatch now available in the US for $150

[![][1] ][2]

What's the most useful [smartwatch][3] of them all? If you guessed Sony's, you've got reason to smile: we just got word that it's finally available here in the US of A. As expected, the [SmartWatch][4] costs $150, while those colorful (read: not black) wrist bands are priced at $20 a pop. To recap, the watch pairs with Android phones over Bluetooth, using a free app available in Google Play (if you happen to own a Sony handset, you should find that application pre-installed). Like any smartwatch worth its salt, this one lets you read emails, texts and social updates on the device. Meanwhile, the list of mini apps is approaching 60, as of this writing, and already includes biggies like Facebook and Google Maps.

After getting hands-on not [once][4] but [twice][5], we can say the rubber strap is comfortable and the 1.3-inch OLED display responsive, though the apps are a mixed bag in terms of usefulness. Tap-to-like on Facebook? Genius. A remote for your phone's camera? Unabashed gimmickry, if you ask us. Using the watch to call someone in your contacts list? You'll need a Bluetooth headset for that feature to be truly handy. Other favorites of ours include the ability to find your lost phone (even if it's set to quiet mode), as well as stream photos and other media from your phone. You can even respond to incoming text messages with a preset reply (e.g., "I'm busy. What's up?"), though good luck using that canned response a second time when your friend gets back to you 10 seconds later. In any case, is all that worth the $150? That's a conversation you best have with your wallet -- in read-only format, naturally.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 remote viewfinder hands-on (video)

[![Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 remote viewfinder hands-on (video)][1] ][2]

At [last night's launch][3] of the US-bound [Galaxy Player][4] 4.2 -- also known elsewhere as the [Galaxy S WiFi 4.2][5] -- we had the opportunity to try out Samsung's remote viewfinder with the WiFi-equipped [WB150F digital camera][6] we [saw at CES][7]. The free app -- which runs on Android and iOS devices -- provides select Samsung shooters with a wireless viewfinder and remote. We noticed a minor amount of lag with the live video stream but the controls (shutter, zoom, flash, timer, image size) were quite responsive. Pictures can even be geotagged and saved to both the camera and the remote device. Unlike [its predecessor][8], the WB150F becomes a WiFi access point instead of relying on the app to create a hotspot -- something that's generally limited to phones that allow tethering. While Samsung was showcasing the app on the Galaxy Player 4.2, it works on most Galaxy devices and installs on other Android handsets too (like our [HTC One X][9]). Peek at our gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.
