Nokia Seeks More Leverage In the Forever Mobile Patent War

Chief among the ITC complaint was patent 5,570,369, a power saver designed for the GSM system and based on TDMA technology. Although, on the surface, '369 appears to have been tossed in the recycle bin with other 2G relics, the 1996 patent helps serve as a warning shot to competitors recycling Nokia's technology. At the same time it reveals a possible ulterior motive to stop Google's momentum. HTC seems to be straight in the crosshairs of Nokia's legal assault, with three relevant - and curious -- phones singled out in the ITC complaint. HTC's Sensation 4G, Amaze 4G and Inspire 4G are all driven by Android. While similar phones based on the Windows Phone platform were missing from Nokia's accusations."

The integration to Xbox 360 isn't the deepest we've seen, but we're never going to say no to a bit of [inter-platform love][4]. The download's waiting below.

Nokia Seeks More Leverage In the Forever Mobile Patent War

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

ericjones12398 writes "Struggling cell phone manufacturer Nokia launched a recent attack in both German and U.S. courts, filing lawsuits against HTC, RIM, and ViewSonic, alleging a laundry list of infringements on 45 patents pertaining to mobile software and hardware. Nokia also filed a meaty complaint against HTC at the International Trade Commission in Washington requesting select mobile devices be banned from sale in the U.S. According to Louise Pentland, Nokia's chief legal officer, 'Nokia had to file these actions to end the unauthorized use of our proprietary innovations and technologies, which have not been widely licensed.' Chief among the ITC complaint was patent 5,570,369, a power saver designed for the GSM system and based on TDMA technology.

Android 4.0 Upgrade For Sony Xperia Smartphones Opens a Pandora Box

[![][1]][2]

First time accepted submitter ctrl-alt-canc writes "The udpdate to Android ICS offered for free by Sony to the Xperia smarphone users has caused plenty of troubles. Not only the decision by Sony of not updating Xperia Play phones to ICS caused rage among customers, but those who were lucky to get an upgrade for their smartphones discovered that WiFi connection did not work anymore. Up to now, the only suggestion proposed by Sony to fix the problem is to turn off the encryption, and reboot the smartphone and the access point."

New Motorola slider for Sprint surfaces with Android 4.0, many mysteries

[![New Motorola slider with Android 40 surfaces with Sprint clues, many mysteries][1] ][2]

Two can play at the [leaked Android slider phone][3] game: just hours after Samsung and T-Mobile had their time to play, a more than slightly enigmatic [Motorola][4] QWERTY slider has popped up at the _Android Central_ forums. What looks at first like a [Droid 4][5] with the edges rounded off instead looks to be a completely new creation that has the same buttonless front face plus Android 4.0 combo as the rumored [Droid RAZR HD][6]. Other than a Sprint Music app icon giving away the phone's ultimate destination, though, we know little else about what the design will entail. It's logical to imagine Sprint wanting LTE and at least a qHD (540 x 960) screen, however. The tipster didn't give a clue as to when Motorola's device would officially join the ranks -- not to mention any device names -- but we'd say that the lack of any QWERTY phone on the soon-to-launch Sprint LTE network might serve as a strong incentive for both the carrier and Motorola to get cracking.

MIUI reaches Google Play as MiHome Launcher, gives that Xiaomi look

[![MIUI reaches Google Play as MiHome Launcher, gives that Xiaomi look][1] ][2]

Xiaomi's [MIUI][3] interface for Android has been available to load up for some time, but unless you were willing to flash your firmware, you might as well have just imported [one of the company's phones][4] instead. Now, however, getting much of that heavily customized (if [slightly familiar][5]) layer is as quick as heading over to Google Play. Dedicated versions are available both for Android 2.3 and 4.0 that provide the same core navigation as well MIUI Locker to replace the current lock screen. It won't quite replicate the experience of [the real deal][6], but it will certainly be the most trouble-free.

That's not to say it's the end of sharing, however. The company's recent [sharing link support][4] is still very much in effect to let groups share files or whole folders between each other. Some will point out that it's still not a direct substitute, which is true; if you're not already packing your virtual bags for a trip to [Google Drive][5] for that reason, just remember that grandfathered Public folders will carry on for the foreseeable future.

Lenovo's IdeaTab S2110A transforming tablet hits the FCC, doesn't mind the mess

[![Lenovo IdeaTab 2110a transforming tablet hits the FCC][1] ][2]

>From the looks of it, the coffee-chugging folks in the [FCC's][3] underground bunker were so excited about investigating Lenovo's IdeaTab S2110A (formerly the [IdeaTab S2][4]) that they didn't have time to clean up. The [transforming Android tablet][5] (with optional keyboard dock) was splayed and tested to determine if its 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 radios were safe for human consumption -- with the thumbs up meaning that it shouldn't be long before the hardware arrives stateside.

Insert Coin: Deeper Smart sonar Fishfinder for Android and iOS

_In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line._

[![Insert Coin Deeper Smart sonar Fishfinder for Android and iOS][1]][2]

We can't say a smartphone-connected sonar fish detector ranks high on our must-have list, but man is it a cool idea. Friday Lab's taking the plunge with its Deeper Smart Fishfinder -- a spherical waterproof device that beams back individual fish depth and location info, along with temperature and floor depth to your [Android][3] 2.2+ or [iOS][4] 4.0+ smartphone or tablet within 150 feet via Bluetooth. You simply use a standard rod and line to lower Deeper from a bridge, boat or shore, and the device automatically powers on when it makes contact with water -- a six-hour battery should suffice for all but the most dedicated of fishermen, unless they have a USB power source nearby for charging.

Naturally, the sphere is water- and shock-resistant, and can operate in temperatures ranging from -10 to 40 degrees Celsius (14 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit). The Deeper app also provides air temperature and moon phase readouts, and social media functionality that lets you post fishing updates to Facebook or Twitter -- so all of your less fortunate friends can see how much fun you're having catching fish and stuff. The first 60 Deeper backers can snag one set for $129 (plus $20 shipping) on Indiegogo, while latecomers can hop on board for $20 more. You can also place your pre-order through the company's site, also for $149. There's just shy of four weeks left for Friday Lab to meet its $49,000 goal, so hit up our source link after the break to show your support. And if you're not quite ready to commit, there's a video awaiting you there as well.

Huawei M660 wields portrait keyboard, headed for Cricket Wireless?

[![Huawei M660 wields portrait keyboard, headed for Cricket Wireless][1] ][2]

After the familiar vertical keyboard structure of a [BlackBerry][3], but with all the Google friendliness and app breadth of an Android phone? Then Huawei may have the answer -- and it looks like it'll land on the US carrier, [Cricket][4]. According to leaked photos sent to _PhoneArena_, the Huawei M660 is modestly equipped with Android 2.3 and a portrait QWERTY keyboard nestled below a 3.2-inch display. Its existence is backed up by a page on the manufacturer's site, pointing to a (now non-existent) user guide that references expandable microSD storage, the possibility that it may arrive as the Ascend Q, _and_ name-drops Cricket in the process. For those with portrait keyboard needs, you can hit up the link below for a few more shots of the device.

Motorola Solutions buys Psion for $200 million

[![Psion Netbook Pro][1] ][2]

[Psion][3] has mostly slipped out of the public eye, but that's about to change -- [Motorola Solutions][4] just bought the company for $200 million in cash to bolster its work with industrial companies. The deal will mostly focus on improving Motorola Solutions' toughened-up handhelds and in-car terminals. Not always exciting out of devices like [the ET1][5], but it ends Psion's 32-year history as an independent company and a legacy that includes some of the very first [PDAs][6], like the Psion Organizer. We won't miss the [fight over the "netbook" name][7], mind you. Regardless of how you feel, you'll have until fall to wax nostalgic, as that's when the two sides expect the deal to close and the Psion name gets subsumed into that of [another mobile pioneer][8].

VTech's kid-friendly slab may not sport Google's [dessert-themed OS][3], but it does carry a lower sticker price than its [Android][4]-[based][5] [competitors][6]. The InnoTab 2 Learning App Tablet keeps its [predecessor's][7] $80 price tag while packing in 2GB of onboard storage (expandable up to 32GB with an SD card) and a rotating camera for taking stills, videos and playing AR games. The slate's vanilla configuration will hit shelves this fall, but a WiFi-equipped version can be had this holiday season for a $20 premium. The MobiGo 2 Touch Learning System is set to roll out this summer in a similar fashion, [retaining][8] a $60 asking price despite adding a motion sensor and microphone to its repertoire. After giving its iPlayer the nod to [stream programming content][3] over mobile networks in the UK, the Beeb has decided to do the same with its BBC Sport mobile site. Not only will you be able to stream live coverage, like the current crop of Euro 2012 _football_ matches, but also any existing video content that was previously desktop-bound. Hit up the source link to give it a try; you'll need Android 2.2 or higher or an iOS device that's packing version 5. Sorry, non-sporting Brits. Samsung T-Mobile slider shows Chiclets for Mr. Blurrycam, could be the SGH-T699

[![samsung-t-mobile-slider-shows-chiclets-for-mr-blurrycam ][1] ][2]

If you're a fan of old-school QWERTY, it seems T-Mobile will soon have a clicky Samsung [slider][3] friend for you. The leaked image from _TMoNews_ could also clear up a mystery and put a face to the name SGH-T699 we saw [last month][4] in a leaked [user agent profile][5]. From that we gleaned a 720P display, and new info points to a 5MP rear camera, Qualcomm S3 or S4 chip and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich to boot. We'll keep the skep-o-meter turned up high till we have confirmation for all that, but tactile keyboard phone lovers might want to start making plans.
