AT&T's One X discovered to have 'restricted' bootloader, HTC responds

[![][1] ][2]

Since last year, HTC itself has been [happy][3] to let you unlock the bootloaders on its Android devices, but that doesn't mean you'll always be able to. If you'll recall, the international version of the One X was [rooted][4] just a few weeks ago, but such access apparently isn't in the cards for the [AT&T-branded variant][5]. The inconsistency was discovered by the likes of the _XDA-Developers forums_ and _MoDaCo_, and after we pinged HTC for comment it responded with the following:

> HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future."

While HTC clearly isn't spilling the beans on what "restrictions" are blocking this variant of the Android superphone from entering the land of [custom ROMs][6], it's become a general suspicion that AT&T might be the source. Naturally, we can't know for sure at this point, but we've reached out to the carrier in hopes of potentially getting more details on the situation. We'll be sure to keep you posted if we hear anything, but in the meantime, hit up the more coverage links below for further info.

Facebook Messenger update makes it even harder to blow people off

[![Facebook Messenger update makes it even harder to blow people off][1] ][2]

Your friends just don't get it. While they're still bumming around in [Nikes][3], [dorms][4] and [doomed relationships][5], your life has recently become more serious. That's why you sometimes need to hide from their constant, mindless barrage of messages, and also why you probably won't install the newly updated [Facebook Messenger app][6] v1.7. In line with FB's "mobile first" strategy, it debuts key new functions on iOS and Android, including instant and compulsory "seen by" read receipts as well as optional "sent from" notifications. So, in addition to knowing how aloof you've become, they'll be able to track you down and [slap your face][7].

Why Verizon Doesn't Want You To Buy an iPhone

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

Hugh Pickens writes "Sascha Segan writes that although Verizon adamantly denies steering customers away from Apple's iPhones in favor of 4G LTE-enabled Android devices, he is convinced that Verizon has a strong reason to push buyers away from the iPhone. 'Here's the problem,' writes Segan. 'Verizon has spent millions of dollars rolling out its massive LTE network' but the carrier can't easily add capacity on its old 3G network. Since the iPhone isn't a 4G, phone sales of Verizon iPhones just crowd up their already busy 3G network while their 4G network has plenty of space. 'The iPhone is a great device. But it's making a crowded network more crowded. Until the LTE iPhone comes along, to rebalance its network, Verizon may quietly push Android phones.'"

HBO Go and Max Go get Android 4.0 phone support, skip tablets for now

[![HBO Go and Max Go][1] ][2]

Those with Android 4.0 phones like the [HTC One X][3] have been left out of watching [HBO Go][4] and [Max Go][5] on the road so far. New updates to the respective mobile apps take care of that: either premium channel will now stream directly to a phone running Google's latest OS (assuming you're [subscribed to pay-TV][6], that is). Speed-ups and bug fixes are in the upgrades, too. Oddly, Android 4.0 tablets have yet to make the leap, ruling out your [Transformer Pad TF300][7] for catching up on episodes of _True Blood_.

Third betas of Adobe Flash 11.3, AIR 3.3 give peeks at low-lag audio and deeper iOS support

[![Adobe Flash Platform][1] ][2]

[Adobe][3]'s famous desktop browser plugin may be looking forward to a [2013 overhaul][4], but that doesn't mean it isn't out to improve itself in the here and now. [Flash Player's][5] 11.3 beta, for instance, rolls in low latency audio support through NetStream, designed specifically to cut back audio lag in cloud gaming. The beta also introduces support for complete keyboard control when in full-screen mode, background Flash updating on Macs, and a Protected Mode for Firefox that keeps rogue Flash files from compromising Windows PCs using Vista or later.

The [AIR][6] 3.3 beta, on the other hand, smooths the runtime's iOS experience, allowing compiled apps to run in the background more like their natively-compiled siblings. It's also friendlier to developers, with new USB debugging and simulator support that now doesn't require a physical device. Android 4.0 users aren't entirely left out, getting stylus support for AIR apps on their platform. Adobe hasn't said when the finished versions of Flash 11.3 and AIR 3.3 will reach its servers, but if you're willing to live life on the bleeding edge, you can find the download links below.

Adobe issues security update for Flash player, warns against IE exploit

[![adobe flash player update internet][1] ][2]

Internet Explorer [associated][3] with an [exploit][4]? _Color us shocked_. Facetiousness aside, it's seriously about time you switched over to Chrome or Firefox (as a mitigation tool; not a foolproof solution), and if you're a desktop user relying on Flash Player, well... it's about time you updated that, too. Adobe has just released a security update for Flash Player 11.2.202.233 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh and Linux, Adobe Flash Player 11.1.115.7 and earlier versions for Android 4.x, and Adobe Flash Player 11.1.111.8 and earlier versions for Android 3.x and 2.x. We're told that these updates "address an object confusion vulnerability (CVE-2012-0779) that could cause the application to crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system." Adobe specifically mentions an exploit that targets Flash Player on Internet Explorer for Windows, where a user is duped into clicking on a malicious file delivered in an email message. Hit up the source link for more information on getting your system out of The Danger Zone. Which, conveniently, can be looped as you update with a click after the break.

Xamarin's XobotOS opens prospect of Android port to C#, can of worms

[![Xamarin-XobotOS-ports-Android-to-C-Sharp][1] ][2]

Would it be ironic if Android developers did an end-run around [Microsoft patents][3] by using Microsoft's own C#? Or if Google kiboshed its Oracle [brouhaha][4] with the aid of none other than Redmond? We're asking because Xamarin, the wacky open source implementer of .NET, has ported Android to Microsoft's C# with its XobotOS project. Although just an experiment and unlikely to solve Google's [issues][4], the team showed that running the robot on C# instead of Java gave fewer coding limitations, better battery life and direct graphics access. Additionally, Xamarin reports "massive" speed gains on its HTC Flyer and Acer Iconia when running the side-project port -- no surprise given C#'s machine heritage. Sure, it's pure speculation that Mountain View and its developers would ever change their Java MO, but a little patent relief and faster Android devices in one kill shot? That's a sweet idea.

Distro Issue 39 takes a look back at 40 years of Atari and the console's cultural impact

[![Distro Issue 39 takes a look back at 40 years of Atari and the console's cultural impact][1] ][2]

If you're in the market for some weekend reading, we've got quite the issue of our [weekly tablet mag][3] in the hopper. James Trew takes a look back at 40 years of cultural impact at the hands of Atari in this installment's feature. It doesn't matter to Darren Murph that Apple isn't making an iPad / MacBook Air hybrid, he still wants one and he tells why. Keeping with the gaming theme, Ludwig Kietzmann asks if _Trials Evolution_ is the perfect game in this week's Reaction Time. The hands-on section pays a visit to [BlackBerry World][4] while spending some time with Spotify's iPad app and Microsoft's new SkyDrive software offerings. On the reviews side of things, we put the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, Acer Iconia Tab A510 and a duo of throwback mirrorless cameras through the wringer. Speaking of e-readers, [Switched On][5] offers some thoughts on the matter and [IRL][6] lets you in on three more of our go-to gadgets. If that's not enough, Stat shows how Android slates are feeling the Kindle Fire's heat, _The Next Web's_ Martin Bryant has a go at the Q&A and Box Brown has the Last Word on a hero's required pixel density. Ready to feed that retro gaming appetite? Visit your link of choice below to grab a copy of the weekly to get started.

HTC exec: we didn't have much time with ICS when making Sense 4, but our skin is still better

[![HTC exec: we hardly saw ICS before releasing Sense 4, but our skin is still an 'improvement'][1] ][2]

HTC's Drew Bamford is a [long-time defender][3] of the Sense UI, but in a fresh interview he's switched tactics and rushed headlong at the competition. He told _Laptop_ that Sense 4 beats native [Android 4][4] (as seen on the [GNex][5]) on a number of fronts, possessing a more inviting look, greater personalization of the lockscreen and wallpaper, plus faster camera performance. Of course, he _would_ say that, but having spent many balmy evenings with both the [One S][6] and the [One X][7] we're inclined to agree that the latest version of the skin is lighter-footed and, actually, [pretty nice][8]. What's perhaps more revealing is Bamford's statement that HTC's software guys had "not a lot of time" with ICS before they released Sense 4, and had to build key components in isolation from the new OS. This could explain why HTC was forced to see sense (ahem) and tone down its custom layer. More broadly, if manufacturers are struggling to keep their handset launch schedules in sync with Google's in-house development, it's no wonder that Android skins seem so [unsympathetic][9] to the green robot's natural complexion.

LG announces Optimus LTE2, coming to Korea mid-May with True HD IPS and 2GB RAM

[![LG announces Optimus LTE2, coming to Korea mid-May with True HD IPS and 2GB RAM][1] ][2]

Unlike today's other [phone announcement][3], we can't say we were expecting to see LG come out with something of its own -- and it's a bit of a doozy, at that. Samsung's [Korean rival ][4]decided not to let the Galaxy S III have the full spotlight for long, officially unleashing the Optimus LTE2. The mind-blowing portion of the spec sheet is its inclusion of 2GB RAM, a milestone we haven't yet seen in a smartphone. Additionally, the LTE2 will feature the company's "[True HD IPS][5]" display, WPC-backed wireless charging capabilities, Android 4.0 and a 2,150mAh battery that LG claims will increase the battery life by an astounding 40 percent. We haven't received word on which CPU will be used, though we're hopeful that a quad-core beast (or Krait, perhaps?) will complement the astounding amount of RAM. The LTE2 is due to land on at least three carriers in Korea sometime in mid-May, but we haven't heard any pricing or additional country availability at this time. We'll keep you posted as we learn more. In the meantime, check out LG's Flickr page down below for more images, and start thinking of ways to take advantage of the extra horsepower.

Samsung announces SmartStay and S Voice features for the Galaxy S III

[![][1] ][2]

In addition to announcing its newest flagship, the [Galaxy S III][3], along with some nifty [photo-sharing][4] features, Samsung has just revealed two more human-friendly features that aim to [further][5] differentiate the phone on the software side. These include SmartStay, which cleverly keeps the display from timing out by using the front-facing camera to detect when you're looking at the screen. Meanwhile, S Voice ushers in voice commands, and is the closest thing we've seen to a Siri competitor since Apple introduced that feature on the iPhone 4S. And we have to say, though Android users have long been reveling in voice-activated dialing and Google searches, the list of possible use cases here is quite impressive. In addition to initiating calls, you can wake the phone, request songs, send emails and text messages, use the calendar app, adjust the volume, capture photos, snooze the alarm and inquire about the weather. For now, Samsung says this feature will support eight languages, including, among others, Spanish, German, Korean and American / British English. Still, we wouldn't put it past Samsung to teach the GS III a few more languages once it gets that whole "launching in 145 countries" thing out of the way.

Samsung Galaxy S III gets an early exclusive on Flipboard, headed to other Android phones in 'coming months'

![Image][1]

It looks like you can now add one more popular iOS app to the Android ranks -- sort of. Samsung has managed to get an exclusive version of [Flipboard][2] for its just-announced [Galaxy S III][3] smartphone, and the folks at _SlashGear_ have already taken it for a quick spin. The short version: it's a lot like the iOS app, with the notable exception of some widgets that you can add to the phone's home screen. As for when it will head to other Android phones, Flipboard is only saying that it will be available for "select" phones in the "coming months." You can find _SlashGear's_ hands-on at the link below.

Perhaps most interesting pieces, however, are the AllCast wireless dongle (which appears to be direct competition to [HTC's Media Link HD][4] video-mirroring device), a Wireless Charging Kit and an S-pebble MP3 player that plays nice with the scan and match feature in the Music Hub app.

Samsung Galaxy S III is official: 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Exynos processor and gesture functions

![Image][1]

The Galaxy S III is Samsung's new flagship smartphone and it's finally broken cover at the company's stand-alone [Mobile Unpacked event][2] here in London. With a steady stream of [fakes][3], [outright leaks][4] and even event rescheduling, Samsung's claimed almost crazy levels of interest for its new smartphone. Weighing in at 133g (4.7 ounces) and whittled to 8.6mm at its thickest, the rounded-off design has more than a little bit in common with its [Galaxy Nexus][5] cousin. Of course, it's Samsung's new 1.4GHz [Exynos 4 Quad][6] processor doing the legwork, and there's 1GB of RAM to help it out. The display has been bumped up in size to a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED affair, sporting a 1280 x 720 pixel count. Happy snappers will have an 8-megapixel rear shooter to play with, and a 1.9-megapixel eye on the front will take care of those video calls. If you were wondering about radios, it's launching with HSPA+, but there's an LTE version in the cards. As for the interface, it's TouchWiz on top of Android 4.0 again, and there's new gesture functions to help you get around. So, there it is, the phone we've all been waiting for (until the next one) but that's not all, be sure to check our [hands-on coverage][7] and additional features for the in-depth breakdown.

Samsung Galaxy S III preview: hands-on with the next Android superphone (video)

[![Samsung Galaxy S III preview: hands-on with the next Android superphone][1] ][2]

You remember that Galaxy S II? A phone so good they launched it, well, a whole load of times. But after seeing [phablet cousins][3] and [LTE variants][4], the _true_ handset sequel is finally here. The Galaxy S III is moments away from being outed in front of journalists and Sammy's business partners in London, but in advance of the big reveal we were given a few hours to acquaint ourselves with the new star away from the crush of the show floor.

And what did we make of it? In short, Samsung's tried to bring its Galaxy S series in line with (and in some ways, further ahead of) what its [team-up with Google][5] accomplished. It's added some new [quad-core Exynos][6] processing juice, a 4.8-inch, HD Super AMOLED screen and a handful of Galaxy S III-only features in an earnest bid to maintain its place at the top of the Android pile. You'll find our detailed impressions and a hands-on video just after the break.

Samsung Galaxy S III software impressions (video)

[![Samsung Galaxy S III software impressions (video)][1] ][2]

So, you nodded agreeably when all those [hardware specs][3] were listed, but are a bit more intrigued by what Samsung's done to the Android 4.0 interface. In short, TouchWiz is still here, but there are some noticeable differences between it and the legacy version seen on the Galaxy S II that bring the GSIII closer to a stock Android experience. But, there are also some things that are a rehash of what we saw on last year's Gingerbread hardware. We've delved into this latest interpretation, and tried out Sammy's S Voice and S Beam features along the way. Our deeper impressions are after the break, where you'll also find a quick video rundown and can see the new software in action.

Android tablets slip and fall in Q1. Apple's iPad says ha-ha

The tablet market showed some weakness during the first quarter, but Apple's iPad remained strong, according to new research from IDC.

IDC: Apple makes big gains in tablet market, Android stumbles

![Image][1]

Research firm [IDC][2] predicted there would be a steep drop off in tablet shipments during Q1 of 2012. Following the surge of sales during the holiday season, a fall of 34 percent, while certainly staggering, is hardly surprising. But there's bad news: shipments failed to meet even those bleak predictions. Shipments fell by 38.4 percent, thanks in large part to Android slates stumbling dramatically. After a reasonably impressive holiday season, IDC expected Android would continue to make inroads in the market. Instead, the number of units moved dropped drastically, allowing Apple to not just maintain its position at the top of the heap, but assert an unquestionable dominance not seen since the early days of Honeycomb. After accounting for 54.7 percent of all tablet shipments in Q4 of 2011, the iPad opened up an impressive lead, claiming 68 percent of the market in Q1 of 2012. What's more, after catapulting to the [number two spot][3] by shipping 4.8 million units at the end of last year, Amazon fell to number three -- accounting for only 4 percent of tablets shipped, a precipitous fall from 16.8 percent last quarter. That's good news for Samsung, however, which reclaimed its place as first runner up slate wars. For more, check out the PR after the break.

Wikipad's Android tablet amps up with Gaikai game streaming, quad-core, 10-inch screen

[![Image][1] ][2]

Wikipad's [Android 4.0 gaming tablet][3] still hasn't received a definitive release date despite having just half a season left to meet its launch target, but that hasn't stopped its creator from boosting the feature set. When the tablet does arrive, it will now bake in Gaikai's [game streaming service][4] for you to start playing games as soon as the shrink wrap's off the box. In return for the long wait since CES, Wikipad is also giving its slate a heavy makeover: the 8.1-inch screen is ballooning to 10.1 inches, while a lighter body will carry an unnamed quad-core processor and an option for 3G. Otherwise, you're looking at much of the same formula that first emerged in January, which includes traditional gamepad-like controls on either side as well as front and back cameras, 1080p video support and 8GB of space to store your games when you don't want to bring a microSD card. We're looking forward to getting our paws on those dual analog sticks soon, but for now you can check the news release after the break.
