Android this week: Galaxy Note 2 pen tricks; Nexus 7 sales; New Acer tab

Even with new devices announced, the Galaxy Note 2 continues to impress. This week, I spent more time learning about the useful S-Pen. Meanwhile, Google's mobile revenues are app; could content for the Nexus 7 be helping? Acer's new small slate cuts a few corners.

LG's been stepping up its mobile game recently, with the [Optimus G](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/lg-optimus-g-review-a-quad-core-powerhouse-with-nexus-aspiratio/) being the firm's clearest display of podium-position ambitions yet. And just like its regional neighbors, it's getting in on the "[explaining-ideas-behind-concepts](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/24/samsung-reveals-the-design-story-highlights-for-the-gsiii/)" video action. In this clip we see senior research engineer, Sebastian Hochan Song, explain the inspiration and process behind the new phone's QSlide multitasking function. Again, like its fellow Korean nationals, nature and the real world play a heavy part in the idea process. Head past the break if you want to see LG's thoughts about pushing Android multitasking forward, and keep an eagle eye out for one of our very own editors' quick cameo appearance.

Trailrunner7 writes "There are thousands of apps in the Google Play mobile market that contain serious mistakes in the way that SSL/TLS is implemented, leaving them vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks that could compromise sensitive user data such as banking credentials, credit card numbers and other information. Researchers from a pair of German universities conducted a detailed analysis of thousands of Android apps and found that better than 15 percent of those apps had weak or bad SSL implementations. The researchers conducted a detailed study of 13,500 of the more popular free apps on Google Play, the official Android app store, looking at the SSL/TLS implementations in them and trying to determine how complete and effective those implementations are. What they found is that more than 1,000 of the apps have serious problems with their SSL implementations that make them vulnerable to MITM attacks, a common technique used by attackers to intercept wireless data traffic. In its research, the team was able to intercept sensitive user data from these apps, including credit card numbers, bank account information, PayPal credentials and social network credentials."

Motorola lists phones that won't get Jelly Bean, offers $100 credit to buy a phone that will

[![Motorola lists phones that won't get Jelly Bean, offers $100 credit to buy a phone that will](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/droid-3-hands-on.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/motorola-phones-no-jelly-bean-upgrade/)

Back in September, Motorola Mobility [announced](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/motorola-main-event-available-for-streaming/) that some of its handsets from 2011 and later wouldn't be making the jump to Jelly Bean. In an effort to smooth things over with exiled customers, the company [pledged](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/motorolas-rebate-site-goes-live/) that it would offer a $100 rebate to those who trade up to a select Motorola smartphone. Today, the Google-owned Android maker has released a list detailing which phones qualify for this promotion. If you're among the many who purchased a Droid 3, Droid X2 and Photon 4G, it looks like an official update to Android 4.1 is out of the question. It should be noted that this offer doesn't affect your wireless contract's terms and conditions (read: ETF may still apply). However, if you're just aching to pick up a Motorola phone that released in 2012, then why not score a $100 credit for your troubles? Move past the break to see which other devices <strike>made</strike> didn't make the cut.

Ahead of Google's [Android event on the 29th](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/17/google-android-nexus-event-october-29th/) there's additional confirmation of a [storage upgrade for the Nexus 7](http://www.engadget.com/tag/32gb,nexus7), as 32GB units have now been spotted on shelves at US retailers. Seemingly dead-set on matching the [LG E960](http://www.engadget.com/tag/lg,e960) "Mako" Nexus G for the title of worst-kept secret, we've received this photo of a tag for the new unit at a Sam's Club (with a placeholder price), while reports on _Android Central_ and _The Verge_ mention hardware spotted at Staples locations with one person actually succeeding in buying one. All of that follows a [listing on the Staples website](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/16/32gb-nexus-7-staples-advantage/) and one Japanese buyer apparently [receiving one early by accident](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/nexus-7-32gb-accidentally-delivered/). According to the tags and receipts the new units are scheduled to go on sale the same day as the Android event, and at the same $249 price of the current 16GB model.

[Thanks, Adam]

Droid Bionic finally gets an ICS update as everyone else moves on to Jelly Bean

[![Droid Bionic finally gets an ICS update as everyone else moves on to Jelly Bean](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/bionic-review2011-09-07-600-20.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/droid-bionic-finally-gets-ics/)

After nearly a year of suffering with Gingerbread, [Droid Bionic](http://www.engadget.com/tag/droidbionic) owners who haven't given up on their phone will finally be rewarded with that long-awaited [ICS](http://engadget.com/tag/ics) update; the rollout starts October 19th, according to Verizon. Those who get it will receive a new customizable launch bar, a direct access lock screen, enhanced notifications, Motorola's SmartActions app, Face Unlock, easier multitasking, and many other goodies most Android owners have enjoyed for awhile now. It looks like Motorola Mobility actually made good on some of [its promises to fix](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/22/motorola-feels-droid-bionic-owners-pain-promises-to-fix-things/) the handset that has suffered a number of different [problems](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/04/how-would-you-change-motorolas-droid-bionic/) since its launch (which itself took [almost nine months](http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/08/motorola-droid-bionic-finally-available-on-verizon-angelic-chor/) from the initial announce date). However, now that [Jelly Bean](http://engadget.com/tag/jellybean) has taken over as the firmware of choice with no word yet if that'll come to the Droid Bionic, we wonder if it's too little, too late.

**Update**: We've learned from the comments, [Motorola's owner support forum](https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c?utm_source) and [its own Facebook page](http://www.facebook.com/motorola) that the company is planning on rolling out Jelly Bean to the Droid Bionic "in the coming months" so don't lose hope just yet, Bionic faithful.

Not surprisingly, Evernote also says that the update includes a slew of other fixes and tweaks that promise to make the app "faster and more reliable," and it's promising that there's still "lots more to come." SternisheFan sends this quote from ZDNet: "Mozilla has opened its Firefox Marketplace, with Android device owners and developers getting the first access to the browser's app store. The access arrived on Thursday, in the release of the latest 'Aurora' build of Firefox for Android. Aurora is meant for developers and early adopters, as it is the test stream of Mozilla's browser. The storefront lets people find and install web applications delivered via the browser, and gives developers a place to publicize their apps. 'We're hoping that Aurora users, our awesome early adopters, will go experience the Firefox Marketplace on their Android phones and let us know what they think,' Mozilla Labs engineering manager Bill Walker said in a blog post. 'Our goal is to collect as much real-life feedback as possible about the Marketplace's design, usability, performance, reliability, and content.' ... Mozilla said it expects to follow with a Marketplace for the Firefox browser beta and Firefox OS launches next year."

T-Mobile holding new product launch October 29th

T-Mobile has just sent out invites to the press for a product launch event on the evening of October 29th. We weren't given any clues as to what this new item (or items) could be -- aside from the fact that it will include T-Mobile's full fall lineup -- but we certainly have a few suspicions considering the timing of such an event. [Microsoft](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/windows-phone-8-event-oct-29/) and [Google](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/17/google-android-nexus-event-october-29th/) are both holding press events earlier in the day, after all, which means we're either going to be treated to T-Mobile's Windows Phone 8 lineup or (this is less likely, but anything's possible) a T-Mobile Nexus. Feel free to put your wagers in the comments below, and we'll work to sort out the craziness that will most certainly ensue that day.

Firefox Aurora Brings Mozilla's Web-App Marketplace to Android

It's still a very early release, but the Firefox Marketplace is now available for testing on your Android phone. The web-based apps you'll find in the Firefox Marketplace aren't going to lure most people away from native Android apps, but it lays the groundwork for an app store to complement the coming Firefox OS for mobile devices.

Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro available on AT&T October 21st for $100

[![Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro available on AT&T October 21st for $100](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/tmo0001dsc04315inline.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/samsung-galaxy-rugby-pro/)

Fans of rugged Android phones, rejoice: you only have to wait until this Sunday to get the [Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/samsung-galaxy-rugby-pro-for-atandt-hands-on/) on AT&T. The carrier just announced that it'll be making its way into stores on October 21st and will run you a whole $100 on a two-year commitment. It isn't going to be the stellar top-end device many power users crave, as it features a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 5MP rear-facing camera with 720p video recording, 8GB onboard storage, ICS, LTE, Enhanced Push-to-Talk, 810g military-spec certification and EAS corporate email support. It's a definite upgrade from the Smart, no doubt, but we're still pining for the day that rugged phones can have the best components _and_ bounce off a concrete floor without incident.

Samsung begins delivering Jelly Bean to UK-based Galaxy S III owners

[![Samsung Galaxy S III with Jelly Bean in South Korea](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/gsiiijb.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/samsung-begins-delivering-jelly-bean-to-uk-galaxy-s-iii/)

Samsung has already started on the [Jelly Bean upgrade](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/08/samsung-announces-android-4-1-availability-for-galaxy-s-iii/) path for the [Galaxy S III](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/), but that hasn't meant much so far unless you live in Samsung's homeland. The update's global relevance is expanding in grand fashion now that the company has confirmed the software is rolling out to Galaxy S III units across the UK. Variants on the smartphone for British carriers should get their taste of Android 4.1 over the course of a multi-week update process that brings everyone to the new version. Different [carrier testing methods](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/21/vodafone-walks-us-through-a-phones-android-4-0-upgrade/) prevent Samsung from being any more specific; it's reasonable to say, though, that most owners living in Old Blighty should be running Jelly Bean before the holiday season kicks into overdrive.

Microsoft launches four-year, $80 Office 365 University subscription for students

Microsoft's given Xbox love to PC-buying students [recently](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/18/microsoft-buy-pc-free-xbox-360-promotion/), and it's just announced that it'll carry on that tradition with [Office 365](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/17/microsoft-announces-office-2013-and-365-pricing-nudges-users-to/) University, by offering a special four-year, $80 subscription to higher-education students. For that sum, you'll get four years of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access if you're seeking a sheepskin scroll, which Redmond says works out to $1.67 per month. Also included are 60 Skype world minutes per month and 27GB of Premium [SkyDrive](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/28/microsoft-skydrive-for-android-app-now-available/) storage, along with free upgrades and the ability to install on two separate computers, to boot. That should take some of the sting out of those scholarly expenses if you need a copy, so check the source to see how to grab it.

Sony to start Xperia upgrades to Jelly Bean by mid-Q1, rules out all 2011 phones

[![Sony Xperia T review close-up](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/xperiatscreen.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/sony-to-start-xperia-upgrades-to-jelly-bean-by-mid-q1/)

We've got mixed news for those who were wondering just where [Sony's Jelly Bean updates](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/sony-backpedals-on-android-4-1-upgrade-statement-is-now-active/) were headed. The good? Sony has narrowed down its upgrade schedule for the [Xperia T](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/sony-xperia-t-review-a-new-4-5-inch-smartphone-flagship-that-is/), [Xperia TX](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/sony-xperia-tx-hands-on/) and [Xperia V](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/sony-xperia-v-hands-on/) to the middle of 2013's first quarter, or roughly February. Just about every other reasonably capable 2012 model is also getting an upgrade once Sony has narrowed down the timetable, ranging from the [Xperia S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/08/sony-xperia-s-review/) through to the [Xperia ion](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/24/sony-xperia-ion-review/) and [Xperia go](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/xperia-go-xperia-advance-hands-on/). Brace yourself for the dark side of the news, however: not a single 2011 Xperia phone will make the [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/) leap, no matter how quick or recent it might be. The company was "not able to guarantee" the experience the devices would have with the newer OS, we're told. While we know that some older phones would have been borderline at best, that cutoff won't be pleasant for anyone whose [Xperia Arc S](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/06/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-s-review/) is already out of the Android upgrade loop after less than a year.

Google to Verizon Android clients: carrier billing coming to Play store

[![DNP Google tweet to Verizon clients 'Pay for Google Play apps on your phone bill'](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/verizon-play-store-billing-10-19-12-01-1350628451.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/google-play-verizon-carrier-billing/)

If you're on Verizon and don't feel like racking up your plastic when you buy Play store apps or content, the carrier will soon give you the option of putting it on your [phone bill](http://www.engadget.com/tag/carrier+billing/), according to a recent Google tweet. Mountain View's had the option for a [while](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/02/google-play-adds-carrier-billing-for-music-movies-and-books/) now, with T-Mobile, [Sprint](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/sprint-android-users-get-carrier-billing-in-google-play/) and AT&T having already jumped on the app-billing bandwagon, which left Verizon as the final major to climb aboard. Other than saying that you'll be able to bill apps and music that way, details are scant -- but considering Big Red's [whopping](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Verizon,android) Android lineup, it's about time.

Its no [Droid RAZR Maxx HD](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/motorola-announces-droid-razr-maxx-hd/), but Kyocera's Dingo S just _might_ be the trick longevity lovers in the land of the rising sun are looking for. If that isn't quite enough power for you, you won't have to wait long for a recharge: [Kyocera](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kyocera/) says the Dingo S can go from 0 to 50 percent in only half an hour. No word yet on price and availability, but the 1.5GHz dual-core device will be available through [KDDI](http://www.engadget.com/tag/KDDI/) in white, pink and blue at launch. A recent [leaked T-Mobile roadmap](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/t-mobile-holiday-roadmap-leaked/) showed a Huawei Summit handset that we suspected was "possibly Android-flavored," and now that the device has arrived in the carrier's shop, we're still not certain. It's a basic phone, to be sure, with a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display, 3.2-megapixel rear camera, GPS, [Swype](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/12/t-mobile-holiday-roadmap-leaked/) keyboard, WiFi, Bluetooth and HSPA+ network support. What's not clear is the OS, which T-Mob cryptically lists as "proprietary," but appears to at least have Android underpinnings, judging by the phone's manual (and the fact that it's rocking Swype). Hopefully, that won't incur the [wrath](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/15/google-wants-better-compatibility-for-android/) of Mountain View, but if you need a basic $50 phone and don't care about Android-this or [Open Handset Alliance](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/15/google-wants-better-compatibility-for-android/)-that, check the source.

Mozilla opens Firefox Marketplace for Aurora builds of Android, gives mobile a taste of web apps

[![Mozilla opens Firefox Marketplace for Aurora builds of Android, gives mobile first taste of full web apps](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/mozilla-firefox-aurora.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/mozilla-opens-firefox-marketplace-for-aurora-builds-of-android/)Mozilla's love of web apps is [more than obvious](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/09/firefox-16-final-launches-with-reader-on-android-voiceover-on-mac/); we just haven't had a real chance to try the Firefox Marketplace that represents a large part of the company's app strategy. The doors are at last open for a peek, although Mozilla has chosen the unusual path of giving mobile users the first crack: [Android users](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/26/native-firefox-android-browser-adds-speed-flash-html5-and-a-fr/) willing to live on the bleeding edge of an Aurora build of Firefox can browse and run those web apps in Mozilla's store. Everyone else willing to venture into the Marketplace will have to wait until their own Firefox builds receive a matching update, including that rare group with access to [Firefox OS](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/03/firefox-os-marketplace-leaks-in-current-form/). We're not quite in a rush to try a first wave of apps in an alpha-grade browser. Should you be the sort who thinks that even beta releases are too sluggish, however, your gateway to the Marketplace awaits at the source links.

Google announces seller support in India, now allows developers to monetize their apps

[![Google announces seller support in India, lets developers monetize their apps](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/googindia10-18.png) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/google-seller-support-in-india/)

All Wall Street expectations aside, Google appears to be [doing relatively well](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/google-q3-2012-earnings-report/) for itself. And while Android may not be the company's largest source of income, _it is_ undoubtedly a [primed possession](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/google-ceo-1-3-million-android-activations-a-day/) to have around -- with that, it's only natural for the Mountain View-based outfit to extend a hand to the abundant amount of folks developing for its open-sourced platform. On this particular occasion, it's devs in India who are on the receiving end of a grand gesture, with Google announcing it's now allowing them to cash in on their applications by adding [in-app purchases](http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/android-in-app-purchases-hands-on-video/) / [subscriptions](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/google-brings-in-app-subscriptions-to-android/) to ones that are currently free, or simply by selling new, paid app creations on the Play store. [Google](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Google/) says the valuable move was driven by India now being the fourth-largest market for app downloads, and that this is a great way to "help developers capitalize on this tremendous growth."

Recon Instruments offers Flight HUD goggles for wingsuit pilots and skydivers

[![Recon Instruments offering Flight HUD goggles for wingsuit pilots and skydivers](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/10-18-2012recon-gps-goggles.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/recon-instruments-offering-flight-hud-goggles/)

[Recon Instruments](http://www.engadget.com/tag/reconinstruments) has decided to take its wares off the [slopes](http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/08/mod-and-mod-live-android-ski-goggles-give-extreme-analytics-we/) and into the air, provided enough people bite. The Flight HUD is built around the same core as its [ski goggles](http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/01/recon-zeal-transcend-goggles-now-shipping-gps-and-head-mounted/), but has been tweaked to offer information more relevant to skydivers, base jumpers and wingsuit pilots. The tiny LCD just below the field of vision displays speed, altitude and glide ratio in real time. Rather than simply guess how fast they're going, adrenaline junkies will be able to see accurate data in the moment and make the appropriate adjustments. Obviously, this is a rather niche market, so Recon Instruments has set a goal: 250 pre-orders to trigger a production run. The early birds can pick up a Flight HUD for $299, while every order placed after the initial 250 will cost $349. To get a run down of the proposed product from renowned aerial daredevil Jeb Corliss check out he video after the break.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini confirmed using ST-Ericsson's NovaThor ModAp chip

[![Samsung Galaxy S III mini hands-on](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/wmgalaxysiii-mini01-1349973361.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-mini-confirmed-using-st-ericsson-novathor/)

Samsung was shy about saying just what processor lurked inside the [Galaxy S III mini](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-mini-hands-on/), which only really told us that there wasn't an [Exynos](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Exynos/) inside. The chip's creator isn't content to leave the origins a secret, however: that's an ST-Ericsson [NovaThor](http://www.engadget.com/tag/NovaThor/) ModAp sitting inside. The combo includes both the dual-core 1GHz processor and the cellular modem on the same chip die, helping Samsung fulfill the "mini" side of the equation while keeping the costs down. We're certainly no strangers to the NovaThor line after experiencing it in Sony's equally tiny [Xperia P](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/03/sony-xperia-p-review/) and [Xperia U](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/06/sony-xperia-u-review-a-little-slice-of-android-that-punches-abo/). Knowing what's inside might not allay concerns that Samsung is straining to milk the Galaxy S III brand name for all it's worth, but at least you'll know what to expect for performance if you don't go [full-size](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review/).

Next-gen Casio G'zOne makes it to the FCC, reveals LTE and NFC support

[![Image](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/casiogzonefcc.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/18/next-gen-casio-gzone-on-fcc/)

The last [Casio G'zOne](http://www.engadget.com/tag/casio+gzone) handheld to come our way was the [Commando](http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/05/14/casio-gzone-commando-review/), a military-grade device that marked the company's first foray into Android smartphones. Now it seems there's another one in the works, at least if a recent FCC filing is any indication. The Casio C811 looks to be a successor to the aforementioned Commando, with its G'zOne branding and features like WiFi and GSM world phone capabilities. Notably, the FCC document reveals the phone has [Verizon](http://engadget.com/tag/verizon)-flavored LTE plus NFC support, both of which lead us to believe it'll likely be a mid- to high-end handset. Not much else is divulged from perusing the filing, but we're sure that whatever the C811 turns out to be, it'll be just as tough and durable as the rest of Casio's G'zOne offerings.

An anonymous reader writes "'We're able to view just everything that they do,' Bill Diggins, U.S. chief for the Verizon Wireless marketing initiative, told an industry conference earlier this year. 'And that's really where data is going today. Data is the new oil.' From the article: 'The company this month began offering reports to marketers showing what Verizon subscribers are doing on their phones and other mobile devices, including what iOS and Android apps are in use in which locations. Verizon says it may link the data to third-party databases with information about customers' gender, age, and even details such as "sports enthusiast, frequent diner or pet owner."'"
