Cubify lets you skin, 3D print your own personal Android

Sick of letting everyone else skin your Android for you? 3D printing service [Cubify](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cubify/) is helping you fight back with Bugdroids, a customizable version of Google's [lovable green mascot](http://www.engadget.com/tag/android+mascot/). You can change its colors, add accessories like hats, horns glasses, mustaches and bling (that's "bling," not Bing, mind), and then the service will 3D print one out and ship it to you -- well, after you drop an admittedly pricey $30 to $40, figurine size depending.

Facebook Messenger 2.0 for iPhone brings new design to conversations, swipe left for friends list

[![Facebook Messenger 20 for iPhone brings new design to conversations, swipe left for friends list](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/01fbmessenger20-ios.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/29/facebook-messenger-2-0-iphone/)

Facebook debuted the [new look of its dedicated Messenger app](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/facebook-revamps-messenger-for-android-with-friendlier-chats/) on Android last week and and just as promised, now it's available on the iPhone as well. [Facebook Messenger](http://www.engadget.com/tag/FacebookMessenger/) 2.0 brings a new SMS-style bubble layout to conversations, a swipe left gesture to reveal one's friends list and the ability to push the friends you message most to the top of the list. As mentioned along with the Android update this is a part of a new release schedule cycle that should see updates arriving every 4 - 8 weeks. That means you can mark your calendar for the next refresh if this is your social network of choice, but for now just grab the latest version from iTunes.

Sony starts delivering Ice Cream Sandwich update to Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola

Well, it looks like [Sony's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sony/) in-house software developers have decided this is_ __the_ perfect week to deliver delicious treats to a large portion of the company's mobile lineup. Not long after outing updates for the [Tablet S](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/sony-xperia-tablet-s-gets-chunky-update-better-multi-tasking-an/) and [Xperia Ion](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/att-sony-xperia-ion-ice-cream-sandwich-update/) (in the US), the electronics giant is now bringing [Ice Cream Sandwich](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-review/) to handsets such as the [Xperia go](http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/xperia-go-xperia-advance-hands-on/), [Xperia U](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/06/sony-xperia-u-review-a-little-slice-of-android-that-punches-abo/) and [Xperia sola](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/31/sony-xperia-sola-a-pint-sized-android-handset-with-floating-tou/). The refresh itself brings a slew of novel traits to the trio of Xperia slabs, including a "new way to experience" music, photos and video, improvements to the lockscreen, the ability to resize widgets and the addition of a "multitasking" button. While the standout features remain the same across the board, the Xperia sola does get an added bonus in the form of a so-called, self-explanatory glove mode -- which is made possible by the device's "floating touch" technology. Sony does note that availability of the 4.0 upgrade will vary by market and, not surprisingly, carrier requirements. Let's just hope you get to enjoy the changes soon.

PSA: $25 Google Play credit for Nexus 7 ends this weekend

Those who have been keeping a close eye on Google's 7-inch, [Jelly Bean-loaded](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/) Nexus 7 would know that the company kindly [includes 25 bucks](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/27/google-nexus-7-25-dollar-credit/) worth of Play credit with any purchase of said tablet. Unfortunately, as the famed cliche would tell us, all good things must come to an end -- and, well, such is the case with this neat promotion, which will expire on Sunday, September 30th. Here's the good news, however: there's still a relatively good amount of time for folks interested to get it on the [Google Play](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/06/google-play-replaces-android-market/) deal, so now would be the perfect moment to snag what some are calling [the best $200 tablet](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) -- and who knows, this might even lead to a post-order [Gangnam Style celebration](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/caption-contest-eric-schmidt-does-gangnam-style-with-psy/) of your own.

Samsung Galaxy Note II variants for AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon possibly caught at the FCC

[![Samsung Galaxy Note II variants for AT&T, TMobile, Verizon possibly caught at the FCC](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-att-t-mobile-verizon.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-variants-for-att-t-mobile-verizon-at-fcc/)

It's no secret that Samsung plans to bring the [Galaxy Note II](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-hands-on/) to [many US carriers](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-us-launch/) by mid-fall. Even so, getting there requires the FCC's blessing -- which makes us glad to see the regulator approve what might be three carriers' variants of the giant Android phone. The SGH-i317 looks to be the model for AT&T and Canadian carriers, having been greenlit for their key 3G and 4G bands while lining up with a briefly available benchmark of the device sharing the Note II's HD screen and use of [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/). The SCH-i605? Based on its inclusions of both CDMA and GSM, a lone 700MHz LTE band and a past screen capture leak, it's a dual-mode Note II destined for Verizon. As for the SGH-T889, it's even more conspicuous beyond what we've [already seen](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/17/t-mobile-samsung-galaxy-note-ii-firmware/): the T889's HSPA includes the 1,700MHz AWS frequency that T-Mobile will still call home for a long while. LTE likewise exists on the 1,700MHz and roaming-friendly 700MHz bands in possible instances of [futureproofing](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/14/t-mobile-lte-advanced-trials/). While we rarely want to say a mobile device is confirmed until we see it first-hand, the convenient timing and natures of the three FCC approvals only help to fuel suspicions that Samsung's pen-focused event [on October 24th](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/samsung-asks-us-to-witness-the-next-big-thing-at-october-24-event/) is all about the Note II's American launch.

US Appeals court rules Motorola can't enforce injunction against Microsoft in Germany... again

[![US court rules Motorola can't enforce German injunction against Microsoft, keeps the Xbox 360s flowing](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/slim-unboxing44-hands.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/us-appeals-court-rules-motorola-cant-enforce-injunction-against/)

In another face of the ever turning world of patent battles, _Reuters_ reports Microsoft has snagged a victory over Motorola as the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in its favor today. Motorola had obtained an injunction in Germany against Microsoft products -- including the Xbox 360 and Windows 7 -- based on its h.264 patents back in May, but today the court upheld a [previous decision](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/11/microsoft-wins-injunction-in-washington-against-motorola-can-ke/) putting enforcement on hold because of Microsoft's existing lawsuit against Moto for breach of contract. Microsoft's push to [leverage its patents into licensing payouts](http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/28/microsoft-says-android-infringes-on-its-patents-licenses-htc/) from manufacturers of Android devices have seen the two at each other's throats since at least 2010, when the folks from Redmond lodged an ITC complaint over nine patents and followed up with another suit accusing Motorola of charging unfair license fees for its patents. Motorola fired back with its own pair of lawsuits -- all of this a year before we heard it would be acquired by Google -- and the [battle was on](http://www.engadget.com/tag/microsoft,motorola,patent). Whether or not this moves us any closer to any resolution remains to be seen, but at least Bavarian gaming consoles are safe, for now.

**Update**: The press release with all the details and an image of the Blu-ray box art are out, posted by _TheHDRoom_. While it's not all listed on Amazon yet where the prices will likely be lower, the standard Blu-ray edition has an MSRP of $35.99, while the Bat Cowl Limited Edition's tag is $39.99. Additionally, fans can nab the whole trilogy in the _The Dark Knight Trilogy Limited Edition Giftset_ which has a price of $52.99, although they might want to wait until 2013 when _The Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector's Edition_ will arrive. Got all that? Check after the break for the list of extras plus the box art.

**Update 2**: Check out the full press release after the break, including word about a The Dark Knight Rises app on iOS as well as Android for newer Samsung Galaxy devices. Already out on iOS as the Gotham City's most wanted app, it will add more photo modification and interactive features, and when the disc is released it will become a second screen app for use during the movie.

Wikipad CEO James Bower defends his gaming tablet's $500 pricing, why one device beats two

[![Why does the Wikipad cost $500 dollars CEO James Bower explains](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/wikipadhedimg620px.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/wikipad-ceo-james-bower-interview/)

No matter which way you cut it, the Android-based [Wikipad](http://www.engadget.com/tag/wikipad) gaming tablet -- dubbed as much despite not having any connection to Wikipedia -- is _unusually_ expensive. As a 10.1-inch Android tablet, it's comparably priced with the leaders of the market (of the Apple and Samsung variety). The obvious problem comparatively with the big dogs: _visibility_. What is Wikipad, anyway? And who made it?

"This is our first product into the market," consummate salesman and Wikipad CEO James Bower told us in an interview earlier this week -- yes, the company's name is shared with its first product. "We've self-funded the whole concept to this point with a couple of us founders. No VC money or anything," he said (the company did, however, just close its first round of venture capital funding for marketing costs, post-development). Bower's company took the idea of an Android-based gaming tablet with a proprietary, physical (and removable) gamepad from concept to reality in the last year, [first revealing the tablet at CES 2012](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/10/wikipad-ties-up-glasses-free-3d-with-games-controls-all-in-a-ha/). "We've been able to accomplish a lot very efficiently and very effectively to this point," Bower said, in reference to the approximately 80 people who created the device.

That said, despite our [positive hands-on time](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/wikipad-hands-on/) with the Wikipad (even in its prototype state), $500 is a heck of a lot of money to plunk down on an unproven device from an unproven company. The argument gets harder when you remember [Sony's PlayStation Vita](http://www.engadget.com/tag/vita) -- an arguably much nicer device with a far larger library of gaming content that costs half the Wikipad's price at $249.99. Bower doesn't see the logic in this argument. "It's double the price, but it's also double the size," he pointed out. "If you buy a tablet that's seven inches, you can get a $199 tablet -- it's called a [Google Nexus](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) or a [Kindle Fire](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-review-7-inch/). If you're gonna get a full 10-inch tablet, a tablet to this quality, you're gonna spend $499 to $749 ... if we were talking about a 7-inch device or a 5-inch device, and we were at this price point, then it'd be a different story." Admittedly, the tablet -- as a standalone device -- isn't too shabby. But will it woo consumers away from the likes of Apple and Samsung? Bower hopes as much, but we're not so sure.

NPD: Android users chew an average 870MB of cellular data per month, youngest gobble the most

[![NPD Android users chew an average 870MB of cellular data per month, youngest gobble the most](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/npd-cellular-usage-sept-2012.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/npd-android-users-chew-average-870mb-of-cellular-data-per-month/)

Ever wonder how much data you burn through every month on average? If you're an Android user within the US, odds are that it's quite a lot. The [NPD](http://www.engadget.com/tag/NPD/) Group estimates that Americans of the Google persuasion typically consume about 870MB of data on cellular networks every month. While it's not an extreme amount next to the 2.5GB of WiFi usage, it's enough to give anyone second thoughts about coasting on a basic data plan -- and a reflection of how both 4G and media apps have changed our behavior. Not surprisingly, it's a younger crowd more comfortable with smartphones that's the most aggressive: the 18-24 set races through 1.05GB a month where the 55-plus audience uses a more modest (if still healthy) 750MB. We don't yet know how iOS stacks up in current conditions, but the NPD is promising a comparable look soon. Something tells us the [iPhone 5's](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/) LTE will lead to just as much voraciousness.

AT&T 4G LTE adds Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro to lineup

Of the four big US carriers, [AT&T's](http://www.engadget.com/tag/ATT/) always been a solid go-to for variety across its wireless product portfolio. And today, the operator's welcoming a gaggle of Android devices from Samsung to bolster its [4G LTE](http://www.engadget.com/tag/4gLte/) offerings. Headlining this galactic quartet is the [Galaxy Note II](http://www.engadget.com/tag/galaxy+note+ii/), the company's 5.5-inch phablet sequel which, though previously announced, has yet to receive a solid ship date. Also sharing that spotlight is an actual tablet, the [Galaxy Tab 2 10.1](http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/15/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-10-1-review/), and two new smartphones: the Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro. While that latter handset is a mere update to the rugged, water-, shock- and dust-proof [OG Rugby Smart](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/samsung-rugby-smart-review/), the Express is a fresh 4.5-inch ICS device that reps a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU and considerable 2,000mAh battery. All are said to be arriving within the "coming months" which, in non-PR garble, should translate to a pre-holiday release. Check out the official presser after the break.

The original Tablet S has already absorbed a few [interesting](http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/16/sony-tablet-s-update-lets-you-play-with-ps3-controllers-cable-a/) [updates](http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/26/sony-tablet-s-gets-a-wedge-of-ice-cream-sandwich/) and now it's getting one more: devices are waking up to an Android 4.0.3 update that brings significant additions like a Guest Mode for creating restricted user accounts, revamped media and social aggregation apps, and six assignable macro buttons on the IR Remote Control app. Sony has also bolstered its Small Apps function, allowing you to overlay a browser, IR remote and other utilities in a window on top of another app. What this update _isn't_ is [Jelly Bean](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/android-4-1-jelly-bean-review-a-look-at-whats-changed-in-googl/).

[![FAVI's $50 Streaming Stick adds apps, streaming services to any HDTV with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/screen-shot-2012-09-27-at-11.52.07-am.png) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/favi-streaming-stick-adds-android-to-any-hdtv/)

Why get a [Smart TV](http://www.engadget.com/tag/smart+tv/) when you can enhance your existing HDTV with a dongle? That's the precise inquiry FAVI is aiming to answer with its SmartStick, a device that lets you access streaming movies, music, apps, and games just by plugging it into your television's HDMI port. It runs Jelly Bean, the latest Android OS, and supports services like Netflix, Hulu, Epix, YouTube, and Pandora. Other features include a full internet browser, 4GB of memory, and the ability to wirelessly stream media from your computer via its MediaSHARE app. Since it runs Android, you can download apps from the Google Play store as well. While we're still fans of the [Roku Streaming Stick](http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/04/roku-unveils-streaming-stick-squeezes-box-into-mhl-dongle/), the SmartStick's $50 price tag is hard to beat. You can also get a mini wireless keyboard and touchpad mouse for $39.99 for easier navigation. The FAVI Streaming Stick will be available this November, though you can pre-order it now for an October 30th ship date. Check after the break for the SmartStick promo video and the press release.

ZTE Engage cleared to land at Cricket on October 2nd for $250

[![ZTE Engage cleared to land at Cricket on October 2nd for $250](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/zte-engage.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/zte-engage-lands-at-cricket-on-october-2nd-for-250/)

We recently caught first sight of the [ZTE Engage](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/hands-on-with-zte-engage-and-alcatel-authority-for-cricket/) at a press event in New York, but while [Cricket](http://www.engadget.com/tag/cricket) was more than happy to let us play with its latest smartphone, the carrier stopped short of providing us with its pricing or arrival date. All of that changed this afternoon, as we now know that the ZTE Engage will become available on October 2nd with a no-contract price of $250. As a quick refresher, the handset will feature a near-stock Android 4.0 environment and a Snapdragon S2 SoC with a CPU that's clocked at 1.4GHz. Other relevant specs include a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) TFT-LCD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera with a VGA front-facing counterpart and a 1,900mAh battery. For complete details, you'll find the full PR right after the break.

NFL Network's Thursday Night Football Xtra app comes to Android

[![NFL Network's Thursday Night Football Xtra app comes to Android](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/tnfxtraandroid.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/nfl-networks-thursday-night-football-xtra-app-comes-to-android/)

Just in time to arrive alongside some real referees, the [NFL Network](http://www.engadget.com/tag/nflnetwork) has expanded the companion app experience for its Thursday night game to include Android users. Now active as the Browns take on the Ravens in a game where a defender catching the ball in the end zone with both hands is likely to be ruled an interception and not a touchdown, Thursday Night Football Xtra promises fans additional interaction with polls, games, stats. There's also live video reports from Simon Wilcots on the sideline, as well as some conveniently placed ads as seen in the screenshot above. We checked it out early on and the content available was mirrored across devices and platforms, although it was oddly stuck in portrait mode on our Nexus 7. The feature debuted on iOS last week, and is now available on Android phones and tablets as a separate app from the standard NFL '12. Hit the source link below to download it (Verizon subscribers have their [own version](http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/09/nfl-mobile-comes-to-verizon-with-livestreaming-redzone-channel/)) as we wait to see if Brandon Weeden can learn to play quarterback before he turns 30.

Samsung Galaxy Camera swings past the FCC with AT&T-capable 3G

[![Samsung Galaxy Camera swings past the FCC with AT&Tcapable 3G](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/samsung-galaxy-camera-fcc.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/samsung-galaxy-camera-swings-past-the-fcc-with-att-capable-3g/)

Samsung made much ado of the [Galaxy Camera](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/samsung-ek-gc100-galaxy-camera-hands-on/) coming in both 3G and 4G versions, but it wasn't clear just which carriers would let us upload photos when away from WiFi. The FCC might have just given out a big clue with approval filings for two 3G editions. As it's been tested for US clearance, the Android point-and-shoot in its EK-GC100 and EK-KC100 guises has support for HSPA-based 3G on the 850MHz and 1,900MHz bands used by AT&T and larger Canadian carriers -- a possible hint of Big Blue's ongoing connected devices push, but not a very promising discovery for most T-Mobile users or any CDMA customers. Before anyone bemoans the absences of LTE or support for more American networks, however, we'd note that this is just one filing and might not represent the totality of Samsung's US plans, if we're indeed looking at one or more US-bound examples. We'll keep an eye out ahead of the Galaxy Camera's international launch in October to see if there's anything more in the FCC's cards.

Facebook Messenger for BlackBerry reaches App World, sates compulsive chatters

[![Facebook Messenger for BlackBerry reaches App World, sates compulsive chatters](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/facebook-messenger-blackberry.jpg) ](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/facebook-messenger-for-blackberry-reaches-app-world/)

If you own a BlackBerry, it might not have been immediately apparent that [Facebook Messenger](http://www.engadget.com/tag/FacebookMessenger/) has been an option since October; unlike with Android or iOS, you had to track down the download on Facebook's website. We don't know why it's been kept out of a more accessible channel, but that ends today with Facebook's chat-focused app arriving on [BlackBerry App World](http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackBerryAppWorld/) like most any other title. There don't appear to be any new tricks included with the expanded availability, although we'd say that the wider exposure is enough of a highlight for an audience that just needs to get by [until BlackBerry 10](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/25/rim-shows-off-native-facebook-app-for-blackberry-10/). Those who don't use BBM for all their instant messaging can find what they need at the source link.

While all the talk of late is about Cupertino's [newfangled Maps](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/apple-ios-6-maps-problems/) application, Nokia's currently [keeping busy](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/nokia-stacks-up-its-maps-next-to-apple-and-google/) by doing some behind-the-scenes legwork, including signing new deals with car and navigation system manufacturers. Most recently, the Finnish company announced it's partnering with [BMW](http://www.engadget.com/tag/bmw/) to power the "next-generation" navigation system in the upcoming 7-series, which will bring features like Enhanced 3D City Models and an Eco Pro Route that chooses the most fuel-efficient way to get you to your destination. In addition to the BMW alliance, though, [Nokia](http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nokia/) has also teamed up with [Garmin](http://www.engadget.com/tag/garmin/) to bring Transit and Pedestrian maps in the form of an Urban Guidance feature that will be available on iOS and Android devices. AMD Partners With BlueStacks To Bring Android Apps To PCs

eldavojohn writes "News outlets are reporting that AMD has partnered with BlueStacks to bring Android apps to AppZone Player, something that will apparently allow the more than 500,000 mobile apps to run on your PC. From their announcement: 'What's special about the player on AMD-based products? There are many challenges with running apps that were originally designed for phones or tablets on a PC that in most cases has a larger screen and higher resolution display. To solve this, BlueStacks has designed and optimized the player for AMD Radeon graphics and in particular, our OpenGL drivers found in our APUs and GPUs so you get a great 'big-screen' experience. Additionally, the apps are integrated into AppZone, our online showcase and one-stop-shop for apps accelerated by AMD technology.' Unfortunately this appears to only work on AMD-based PCs (although nowhere does it say that it won't work on Intel CPUs or non-Radeon GPUs). Also no word on how they overcame the difference between a mouse and touchscreen (think pinch to zoom)."
