RIM is standing on a burning platform

About a year ago, Nokia's then-new CEO Stephen Elop stunned the industry with his "burning platform" memo that indicated just what a dire state Nokia was in, and that in effect it was like standing on a burning oil platform where to stay where you were meant certain doom, and the only chance was to take a leap into the unknown.

Smartphones Invade the Prepaid Market

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

jfruh writes "When tech geeks debate the state of the smartphone world, they usually focus on the iPhone and its high-end Android rivals from the major carriers. But Android is rapidly entering the lower-end world of contractless prepaid phones that you can buy at 7-11 or Wal-Mart. 63 percent of prepaid phones sold in 2011 were smartphones, and while they might not offer cutting-edge hardware or easy customization, they do provide a smartphone experience without an onerous contract."

Tegra 4 Likely To Include Kepler DNA

[![][1]][2]
[![][3]][4]

MrSeb writes "Late last week, Jen-Hsun Huang sent a letter to Nvidia employees congratulating them on successfully launching the highly acclaimed GeForce GTX 680. After discussing how Nvidia changed its entire approach to GPU design to create the new GK104, Jen-Hsun writes: 'Today is just the beginning of Kepler. Because of its super energy-efficient architecture, we will extend GPUs into datacenters, to super thin notebooks, to superphones.' (Nvidia calls Tegra-powered products 'super,' as in super phones, super tablets, etc, presumably because it believes you'll be more inclined to buy one if you associate it with a red-booted man in blue spandex.) This has touched off quite a bit of speculation concerning Nvidia's Tegra 4, codenamed Wayne, including assertions that Nvidia's next-gen SoC will use a Kepler-derived graphics core. That's probably true, but the implications are considerably wider than a simple boost to the chip's graphics performance." Nvidia's CEO is also predicting this summer will see the rise of $200 Android tablets.

Flurry's analytics: Apple's App Store revenue still leading, but Amazon Appstore close behind

[![Image][1] ][2]

Not like we haven't seen this dog-and-pony show [before][3], but Flurry's latest round of analytics -- which measured revenue of 11 million daily active users from mid-January through the end of February 2012 -- shows Amazon's Appstore pulling in a shocking amount of revenue given the [short life][4] that it has lived. Apple's strength in sales has been well [documented][5], but the latest report shows that for every $1 generated in the iTunes App Store, $0.89 is being spent in the Amazon Appstore. Looking more broadly, the numbers show that just $0.23 are generated in the Google Play halls for every $1 spent in the App Store, but that's hardly a new phenomenon; the ease of sideloading (amongst other factors) has raised complaints from Android developers for years now. Flurry's conclusion is that Google's core strength simply isn't in running a store -- something it's [about to do][6] once more with Android slates -- while both Apple and Amazon excel in doing just that. Curiously, [Windows Phone][7] and BlackBerry were left off of this report, but we're hoping to see those cats thrown in the next 'go round. After all, RIM sure seems [certain][8] that its developers are making out [just fine][9].

Smartphones Invade the Prepaid Market

[![][1]][2]

jfruh writes "When tech geeks debate the state of the smartphone world, they usually focus on the iPhone and its high-end Android rivals from the major carriers.
