[Texas Instruments](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/01/new-ti-power-chips-save-energy-move-towards-universal-charging/) has made the startling announcement that it's going to wind down its wildly successful smartphone and tablet business in favor of [embedded systems](http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/24/freescale-xtrinsic-touchscreen/). VP Greg Delagi told investors that the switch would create a more "stable" and "long-term business" than the cutthroat battles it's faced in mobile. While, currently the world's third biggest semiconductor company, it's concerned about losing ground to players like [Qualcomm](http://www.engadget.com/tag/qualcomm/), [Samsung](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/07/samsung-20nm-14nm-chip-production/) and [Apple](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/25/apple-a6-investigation-shows-highly-customized-dual-core-design/) -- despite its latest [OMAP CPUs](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/08/ti-demos-windows-rt-on-omap-we-go-hands-on-video/) powering tablets like the [Nook HD](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/barnes-and-nobles-nook-hd-7-inch-android-tablet-hands-on-video/) and [Kindle Fire](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/06/kindle-fire-whats-changed/). We're scratching our heads as to why a major player would drop such a strong position like this, but perhaps they know something that we don't.
