Taking bullish approach to the competitive world of smartphones, Sony's head of mobile told reporters earlier today that the company wants to claim third place. Yep, not first or second ([Apple](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/01/strategy-analytics-apple-tops-us-phone-market-for-q4-2012/) or [Samsung](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/25/idc-samsung-extends-lead-over-apple-q4-2012-smartphones/), depending on your metric of choice) but the _other_ guy -- enough to make it on the podium. IDC [recently ranked](http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/25/idc-samsung-extends-lead-over-apple-q4-2012-smartphones/) Sony in fourth place for the last quarter, claiming 4.5 percent of the mobile market, ahead of ZTE but behind Huawei and those aforementioned smartphone sovereigns. Kunimasa Suzuki added that the company's plan might involve [humbler models](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/27/sony-firefox-os-rom-xperia-e/) pitched at developing nations. Hopefully those cheaper Xperia devices will arrive soon, as Sony's [running](http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/08/sony-xperia-s-review/) [out](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/21/sony-xperia-t-review-a-new-4-5-inch-smartphone-flagship-that-is/) [of](http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/06/sony-xperia-u-review-a-little-slice-of-android-that-punches-abo/) [letters](http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/20/sony-xperia-z-review/). And heck, there's nothing wrong with third place.
