All the viral ads courtesy of [Niantic Labs](http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/googles-niantic-labs-launches-field-trip-app-for-android-helps/) told us something was coming, and now its here -- an alternate reality game from Google called Ingress. The theme is one of worldwide mind control, and it'll be played out in real life, where you'll be a part of one of two teams which either embrace or fight "the power" -- The Enlightened or The Resistance, respectively. With the companion mobile app, you'll venture out into the world collecting energy called "XM," found at real locations. This can then be spent on missions to "portals," again associated with key public places. Everyone can participate, but more competition for resources is expected in areas with the most players, obviously. John Hanke of Niantic Labs said some of the inspiration for Ingress came from JJ Abrams, and hardcore [Lost](http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/lost-the-complete-collection-season-six-blu-ray-review-roundu/) fans may remember a similarly cryptic internet 'game' focused around the show. If you want to play, you best sign up at the source below to get access. Still confused about what the hell is going on? Well, that's how they want you to feel (read: check out the video and app screenshots below).
